    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Some college knowledge, as another terrific Saturday approaches....

-- Utah State covered 11 of last 13 as a road underdog.

-- Virginia Tech is 20-8-1 in last 29 games as a road favorite.

-- Wake Forest won four of last six games against Florida State.

-- Stanford won six of its last seven games as a home underdog.

-- Arkansas has QB/coaching issues, but they've also covered 11 of last 12 SEC home games.

-- Road team is 8-2-1 vs spread in Notre Dame-Michigan State games.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.........

    13) Part of what makes this country so interesting is the many cultures that live here. At Texas A&M, they put 40,000 people in Kyle Field night before home games (at midnight) to practice yelling (rooting) for the Aggies. Seriously, one side of the stadium was packed.

USC-Syracuse drew less than 40,000 fans for an actual game at Swamp Stadium last Saturday, in an area where Syracuse supposedly has a strong alumni following.

    12) Guy named Nick Sandberg was long snapper for the Redskins, until he broke his arm last week. He broke it in the first half of the game in the Superdome, but still snapped the rest of the game. Tough guy.

    11) Chicago teachers turned down a 16% raise? In this economy? Apparently they’re objecting to a new rating system that would allow underperforming teachers to be fired.

How do you tell if it’s the teacher or the student who is underperforming?

    10) Back in fall of ’75, when I was a junior in high school, teachers went on strike. Some kids walked out of class and marched to the district offices to support the teachers (get out of going to school).

Passive slackers like myself just went to class every day, because we never had the same teacher two days in a row in any class, so you never had to do your homework. It was great fun until the regular teachers came back.

    10) 197 of 254 players (77.5%) who were drafted last April made NFL rosters this fall.

    9) Odd Fact of the Day: Oklahoma State’s starting QB this year is ten years younger than the guy who was their starting QB last year.

    8) If you bet Alabama-Arkansas game this summer, line was Crimson Tide -6.5; now that Hogs’ QB Tyler Wilson is banged up and after the Arkansas lost to UL-Monroe, the line is now 21.

    7) Jim Mora has done a terrific job instilling some toughness in his UCLA Bruins, who gained 653 yards against Nebraska Saturday, despite starting five freshmen on offense. Its one thing to pile up yards against Rice, like UCLA did in its opener; doing it against Nebraska is an eye-opener.

    6) Seven I-A teams have already lost games to I-AA teams; why are they scheduling these no-win games? I know it seems like a free win where fans pay full prices, almost like a glorified scrimmage, except some of these I-AA teams don’t know it’s a glorified scrimmage. They think it’s a real game, and that’s why they pull an upset now and then.

    5) The more baseball I watch, the more I’m convinced the DH is best used as a place to give your better hitters “days off” from playing the field, while keeping their bats in lineup, as opposed to having an Ortiz/Hafner-type everyday DH. Keeps your team fresher at this time of year.

    4) This has been the 3rd-wettest summer in Las Vegas history; it even rained when I was there in July, and I had never seen it rain in the desert before. They had flooding in Summerlin earlier this week.

    3) Wake Forest won four of its last six games with Florida State; am surprised no bigtime school has ever scooped up Wake coach Jim Grobe, who has made a career out of getting the most out of his talent, both at Wake and Ohio U.

    2) Over the last five years, Wisconsin has ranked 21st or better each year in rushing offense. This year after two games, they’re #103 and as a result, they blamed the new OL coach and he got canned. Things should really improve now that he’s out of the way.

    1) Geniuses who made the 2013 baseball schedule have the Padres opening in Citi Field April 1, with Mets visiting San Diego in August. Wouldn’t it be smarter to open the season in the warmer weather and let the Padres come to Queens in August? Just a thought.

Canadian Bacon: Week 12 CFL betting preview
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With only eight weeks remaining on the CFL schedule, the playoff picture is beginning to take shape. Here are a few tidbits on the Week 12 matchups:

      SATURDAY

      Edmonton at Hamilton (-3, 54)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-7) will try to halt a five-game losing skid when they host the Edmonton Eskimos (5-5) on Saturday. The Hamilton defense ranks dead last in the league in total yards allowed, passing yards allowed, rushing yards allowed and points allowed, a major reason why the over is 8-2 in Ticats games this season.

      Trends
      * Hamilton is 8-2 O/U this season
      * Tiger-Cats are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
      * Eskimos are 5-1 ATS in their last six Saturday games.

      Toronto at BC (-7, 46.5)

Two of the top teams in the league square off at B.C. Place this weekend, as the British Columbia Lions (7-3) entertain the Toronto Argonauts (6-4). The Lions are coming off a convincing victory over Montreal, marking the club’s fifth win in the last six games. B.C. has won four straight and 14 of its last 15 games over the Argos. Toronto beat up on Hamilton the past two weeks to post back-to-back victories.

      Trends
      * Argonauts are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.
      * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in B.C.
      * Lions are 7-2 ATS in their last nine home games.

      SUNDAY

      Saskatchewan at Montreal (-6, 53.5)

The Montreal Alouettes (6-4) look to get back to their winning ways when they host the Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-5) on Sunday. Als QB Anthony Calvillo had his lowest passing total of the season in last week’s loss to B.C., completing only 16 attempts for 152 yards and a score. The Roughriders have posted back-to-back victories but also have issues at QB. Backup quarterback Drew Willy helped Saskatchewan slip past lowly Winnipeg 25-24 last week in relief of Darian Durant. The first-string signal-caller suffered a hip flexor injury early in the contest and may be sidelined against the Alouettes.

      Trends
      * Roughriders are 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings in Montreal.
      * Under is 13-2-1 in the last 16 meetings in Montreal.
      * Alouettes are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 home games.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              STREAKING

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (9-10, 3.83)

Kendrick pitched seven innings of one-run ball to earn the victory Monday over the Marlins. The righty has allowed two runs or less in each of his last six starts and is 5-1 over that same stretch. He gets a chance to pad the stat sheet against the lowly Astros next.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (14-8, 3.71)

Shields tossed a two-hitter, shutting down a potent Texas offense during Tampa Bay's 6-0 win Sunday. The righty-hander has tossed eight consecutive quality starts, going 6-1 with a 1.90 ERA during that span. He’ll have to maintain his recent form if he looks to pick up a victory in his next outing against the Yankees.

              SLUMPING

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds (17-8, 2.71)

Cueto yielded four runs over four innings in the Reds' 5-1 defeat to Houston on Sunday. Cueto has surrendered eight runs over his past 11 frames and draws Miami on Saturday.

              Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers (2-5¸4.40)

The wins haven't come easily for Sanchez in Detroit, as he has posted four straight quality starts with just one victory to show for it. He has faced the Indians twice since switching leagues, allowing four runs (one earned) in 12 innings. His first win for the Tigers came against Cleveland on Aug. 3. He takes the bump against those same Indians next time out.

Geico 400 betting preview: Round 1 of The Chase

The anticipation is over. The 12 drivers for the 2012 version of NASCAR’s Chase for the Sprint Cup have been set. After a week of media events the top 12 and the rest of field are ready to get down to the business at hand.

For the first time in Chase history the first of the 10 races that make up NASCAR’s playoffs will held at the 1.5 mile Chicagoland Speedway with Sunday’s Geico 400.

                The Favorites:

Tony Stewart is the defending winner here and there’s no reason he won’t end up at the top of the field Sunday. Stewart leads all Chasers, and active drivers for that matter, with three wins here, two of those coming in the last five races at Chicago.

In addition he has two top fives and a top ten finish. The reigning Sprint Cup champion is seeded third in the Chase and coming off a fourth place finish last week at Richmond. Stewart is looking to move up in the standings and has a pretty good shot of doing just that and adding a fourth win to his season total and his Chicagoland resume Sunday.

“I feel like we’ve got a shot at it,” Stewart said. “But I don’t watch the stats very much. You just take it week to week. Technology in this sport changes so fast. What was good the last time you were there doesn’t mean it’s going to be good the second time around. You constantly have to work. You’ve got to keep pushing the envelope. It’s a place I like. This place is really getting racy as far as finally being able to move around and change lines and run anywhere from the bottom to the top. It’s a fun track because of that.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. enters the Chase as a legitimate contender, perhaps for the first time in his career. In a season filled with strong finishes and a win at Michigan, Earnhardt could race to a win Sunday. He won here in 2005 and was third here last year in a season where he wasn’t running nearly as strong as he is this time around.

“We've been consistent all year long, and I think our chances are as good as they have ever been for me,” Earnhardt said. “I had a pretty good shot at it back in '04, but I think this year is a better opportunity. We've got the team, and we’re poised to make a run at it. You've got to put the guys that have won the championship at the top of the list as the favorites but we are in the conversation, and we're going to work hard to still be in that conversation at Homestead ."

Clint Bowyer hasn’t won a title, but this year may be his best chance so far. Bowyer seems poised to surprise many in the Chase with his new ride at Michael Waltrip Racing and that surprise could include a win Sunday. Coming off a victory last week at Richmond, his second of the season, Bowyer is on a roll and could add a second victory at the track where he’s scored two top 10 and one top five finish in the last five races here.

The Rest: 1. Denny Hamlin has never won here. He has one top five and two top ten finishes with an average finish of 19.2

                2. Jimmie Johnson. This is only of two tracks in the Chase that Johnson has never won at, the other being Homestead. He has a record of five top five and eight top 10 finishes along with a DNF here. His average finish is 10.

                4. Brad Keselowski has only raced here three times, but has one top five and a top ten finish to show for his efforts. His average finish is among the lowest of the Chase field however at 18.3.

                5. Greg Biffle. The Biff has one top five and one top 10 finish in nine starts; his average finish is also among the lowest of the Chase field at 18.8.

                8. Matt Kenseth has never won here but has a pole along with two top five and four top 10 finishes in 11 starts with an average finish of 12.3.

                9. Kevin Harvick has two wins here, but those came a decade ago. Since then he has six top five and seven top 10 finishes with a an average finish of 10.4

                10. Martin Truex Jr. Bowyer’s teammate has one top five and a top 10 finish to show for his six starts here. His average finish is 18.2

                11. Kasey Kahne. Chicagoland has not been historically kind to Kahne. In eight starts he has one top five, two top 10s and two DNFs. His average finish is lowest among the Chase field at 21.

                12. Jeff Gordon. He has one win here along with one pole, six top five and seven top 10 finishes. Gordon has an average finish of 10.0.

                The Others:

Keep an eye on Carl Edwards. After just missing out on the Chase, Edwards wants redemption and while he has never won here, he was fourth in this race last year and second the year prior. Overall he has three top five and three top 10s with an average finish of 16.3. With no Chase points to protect, Edwards has one goal Sunday and for the rest of the season.

“We are going to Chicago to win the race,” Edwards said. “We have nothing to lose. We almost had nothing to lose at Richmond, but now we really have nothing to lose. We are going to go out and just enjoy these last 10 races for what they are. It’s a chance to go have fun, to try things we’ve been wanting to try all year that we want to try for next year and just try to get victories. I wish so bad this was the first race of our 2012 championship, but really it’s the first race of our 2013 championship run. We’re just getting a head start on these guys and that’s how we have to look at it.”

Another of the non-Chasers to watch is Ryan Newman. Newman has won here and finished eighth last season. He has two top fives and six top 10s with an average finish of 15.9.

                Bottom Line:

Kyle Busch won the 2008 race from the pole, the first time a driver won from the pole. It was also the only time a driver had won from a top-five starting position. Kevin Harvick won the 2002 race from the 32nd starting position, the deepest in the field that a race winner ever started at Chicago. Only one starting position has multiple wins: 14th. Mark Martin won from the 14th starting position in 2009, as did Ryan Newman in 2003.
