College football odds: Week 3 opening line report

Nothing skews the odds like good ole unbridled hate. There are plenty of rivalry games on the Week 3 board, which is a breath of fresh air after two weeks of FCS-versus-FBS stinkers.

The one game everyone is keeping a close eye on is the SEC showdown between Alabama and Arkansas. The Razorbacks had salt thrown in the wound during their upset loss to UL Monroe this past weekend.

Quarterback Tyler Wilson left the game with a head injury and is day-to-day heading into Week 3, keeping most books from posting a line on this game.

The Sports Club, a Las Vegas-based oddsmaking service, has sent out Alabama -14. Peter Korner, founder of The Sports Club, says they weighed Wilson’s status and aimed for a suggested spread somewhere in the middle.

“It’s an in-between number. It’s probably not right either or. We were discussing two or 2.5 points (for Wilson’s value), so we stuck it in the middle,” Korner told Covers. “By the way the announcers were talking, it sounded like he might be able to play. We don’t recommend putting the game up but we did want to send out a number so the guys behind the counter have an idea of the spread if someone asks about it.”

Korner says Wilson’s value to the odds would be higher if the spread were closer. But, with the Crimson Tide set as two-touchdown favorites, they didn’t want to go overboard in terms of adjustment.

Here’s a quick glance at the opening lines for some of Week 3’s other marquee matchups:

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Michigan State Spartans (-3.5)

These two rivals have traded blows, splitting their last four meetings SU and ATS. With the series swinging to East Lansing, The Sports Club sent out a suggested spread of MSU -2.5 while online books opened the Spartans as high as -4. To no surprise, early money is on the Irish and will likely continue to drive the line in the other direction due to the public appeal of Notre Dame.

USC Trojans at Stanford Cardinal (+10)

This classic Pac-12 grudge match opened with the home side as low as +7.5, which has been driven up to +10 by early-bird bettors. The Cardinal didn’t look sharp in a Week 1 scare to San Jose State but rebounded with a dominant 50-13 performance versus Duke last Saturday. Southern Cal is 2-0 but has underperformed in the eyes of oddsmakers, failing to cover in both games. The Trojans are just 1-4 ATS in their last five games with Stanford.

Florida Gators at Tennessee Volunteers (-2.5)

This spread was sent out with the Gators as suggested 2.5-point favorites after a comeback win over Texas A&M. However, sportsbooks had other thoughts and flipped the short line to Vols -2.5. Tennessee downed North Carolina State in the opener and battered Georgia State 51-13 in Week 2, but failed to cover the 46-points. Florida has won seven in a row over Tennessee and is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six trips to Rocky Top. ESPN’s College Game Day will be broadcasting from Knoxville for the first time since 2004 this Saturday.

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

There’s such a thing as too much emotion, especially in sports.

The New Orleans Saints suffered from TME in Week 1 of the NFL season, coming off a summer filled with the “Bounty Gate” scandal and feverish contract negotiations with their star QB, not to mention having those banned players reinstated just days before the season opener.

New Orleans had been through more drama than a season of The Jersey Shore and it hadn't even flipped the coin with the Washington Redskins.

There was no doubt that the Saints were fired up for that game but may have left all that energy in the tunnel. By the time they hit the field, they were an emotionally-drained team, falling 40-32 to the Redskins as 8-point home favorites.

Just like a child calming down from a temper tantrum, the Saints are all cried out and ready to move on with the season. Next stop: Carolina, where books opened New Orleans as high as a 4-point favorite, which immediately was bet down to -1.

We’re not saying the Saints’ hangover is over, but Carolina didn’t look all that impressive either in Week 1, stinking it up in a 16-10 loss to Tampa Bay as a 3-point road favorite. Sure, Cam Newton has a similar skill set as Washington’s dual-threat QB Robert Griffin III but New Orleans is very familiar with Newton’s antics and has won four in a row over the Panthers (2-2 ATS).

This is just one of the lines making football bettors go “hmmm…” heading into this weekend’s action:

Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills (-3.5, 44.5)

Week 1 couldn’t have gone any worse for the Bills, who not only got smacked 48-28 by the Jets but also lost starting RB Fred Jackson for a few weeks and WR David Nelson for the entire season. If New York’s offense can hang 48 points, you have to think the Chiefs' talented trio can do the same.

      NCAAF

Boston College Eagles at Northwestern Wildcats (-3.5, 53)

Apparently Boston College’s offense is winning over bettors more than Northwestern’s defense. The Eagles have posted 30-plus points in their first two games against Miami and FCS Maine. The Wildcats, however, are 2-0 against tough competition. They’ve defeated Syracuse and Vanderbilt covering the spread in both contests and now only give 3.5 at home. Are bettors reaching for a letdown spot after a win over an SEC team?

UConn Huskies at Maryland Terrapins (+2.5, 42.5)

Connecticut is far from a football super power and more than likely, the women’s basketball team has nicer digs than the men’s football squad. But the Huskies are getting little respect for their trip to Maryland in Week 3. The Terps are just 2.5-point home dogs despite escaping FCS William & Mary by one point in Week 1 and needing a fourth-quarter comeback versus Temple last weekend.

                Week 3

                Thursday's game
Underdogs are 7-0 vs spread in this series, with five SU upsets; Rutgers won five of last six in series, with only loss by point here two years ago. Short week for both clubs, but especially for cardiac South Florida team that pulled rabbit out of hat in Reno Saturday, throwing two TD passes of 50+ yards in last 4:00 to escape with 32-31 (-5.5) win, in game they trailed 21-13 at half. Bulls have senior QB starting 36th game, also have 15 starters back overall, 3 on OL, but they're just 4-8 vs spread as home favorite under Holtz. Since 2008, Scarlet Knights are 8-4 as road dogs. Tulane was 34-48/252 passing vs Rutgers in opener two weeks ago, in a dome; Scarlet Knights have new coach, but 15 starters back (3 on OL) and lot of Florida kids on their roster.

Rutgers at South Florida: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rutgers at South Florida (-7.5, 45)

South Florida will try to avoid a letdown after a thrilling 32-31 victory at Nevada when it hosts Rutgers in the Big East opener for both on Thursday. The Bulls are brimming with confidence after scoring two late touchdowns last Saturday, but must refocus quickly against a team that has traditionally given them problems. Rutgers has beaten South Florida in five of the last six seasons, including a 20-17 victory at Piscataway, N.J., in 2011. The Scarlet Knights' defense, which has allowed 12 points in two games against much lesser competition, will face a Bulls' offense that has registered more than 900 yards in two outings. South Florida quarterback B.J. Daniels has thrown for six scores and receiver Andre Davis has emerged as a deep threat. The Bulls must limit a solid Rutgers running game, led by Jawan Jamison.

                  TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN.

                  LINE: South Florida -7.5, O/U 45.

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the mid-80s and a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms. Winds will be light out of the east.

RUTGERS (2-0, 0-0 Big East): First-year coach Kyle Flood has gotten decent balance on offense, but the Knights will have to improve their passing game if Big East teams begin to load the box on Jamison. The junior has run for 222 yards, including 7.9 per carry. Jamison has three straight 100-yard games dating back to last season, the first to do that since Ray Rice (2007). Sophomore quarterback Gary Nova has completed only 55 percent of his passes and thrown two picks. The Knights have put plenty of pressure on the quarterback and must do the same against the Bulls, who have had 12 different players catch a pass.

SOUTH FLORIDA (2-0, 0-0 Big East): With top receiver Sterling Griffin going down with a season-ending knee injury against Nevada, Davis has stepped up. The sophomore set single-game school records with 12 receptions and 191 yards against the Wolf Pack. Daniels threw for 363 yards, the third most in his career, and more importantly no interceptions. Now the stakes are higher and the Bulls will need a more productive running game. Lindsey Lamar, who was expected to be redshirted, came through with 85 yards rushing Saturday with backup Marcus Shaw hobbled. The Bulls' fate ultimately may rest on their defense, which has eight sacks.

                  TRENDS:

*Scarlet Knights are 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.
*Underdog is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
*Bulls are 2-9 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
*Under is 6-1 in Rutgers’ last seven road games.

                  EXTRA POINTS:

                  1. Daniels needs 54 yards passing for 7,000 in his career, while rushing for 1,690 yards and 21 touchdowns.

                  2. Rutgers attempts to start 3-0 for the first time since 2007 and only the fifth time since 1980.

                  3. South Florida is 0-8 against the spread in its last eight Thursday games and 0-6 in the last six home contests.

College football Top 25 betting cheat sheet: Week 3

If you're looking to bet big but only have a short amount of time to handicap, let our Top-25 cheat sheet help you out. We grabbed some quick-hitting betting info on each of the Top 25 matchups with odds available in Week 3 of the season:

Wake Forest at (6) Florida State (-28.5, 54.5)

Florida State is a 28.5-point favorite in its ACC opener against Wake Forest. The Seminoles' defense has been stout so far, with just three points allowed on a lowly 92 yards per game.

                    Arkansas State at (24) Nebraska (-24.5, 67.5)

Nebraska's defense was exploited, allowing 653 yards and 36 points to UCLA last week. Cornhuskers’ coach Bo Pelini says running back Rex Burkhead's status against Arkansas State remains uncertain and he’s still considered day-to-day with a knee injury.

                    (13) Virginia Tech at Pittsburgh (10, 43)

The Hokies hit the road for the first time this season against the Panthers. Virginia Tech holds a 7-4 lead all-time in the series that dates back to 1993. Pitt looks to avoid its first 0-3 start since 2005.

                    (15) TCU at Kansas (21, 59.5)

The Horned Frogs will make their Big 12 Conference debut Saturday on the road in Kansas. TCU has won nine straight dating back to last season and is 17-2 in its last 19 road games. The Horned Frogs hold a 16-8-4 edge in the all-time series.

Tennessee Tech at (4) Oregon (TBD)

The Ducks will play their third straight home game to open the season on Saturday against one of the FCS’s most impressive teams thus far, Tennessee Tech. The Golden Eagles are 2-0 for the first time since 1989. Oregon is the only FBS school they face on their schedule.

                    Furman at (11) Clemson (TBD)

Star wideout Sammy Watkins will make his season debut for the Tigers after serving a two-game suspension as punishment for his legal troubles back in May. This game probably seems insignificant to most bettors but Furman is actually Clemson’s oldest rival. The Tigers holding a 41-10-4 all-time advantage over the Paladins.

                    North Carolina at (20) Louisville (-3, 52.5)

North Carolina suffered without lead rusher Giovani Bernard (knee) last week and it’s unclear if he will be available against Louisville. The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

                    Massachusetts at (18) Michigan (-46.5, 57.5)

UMass has been outscored 82-6 against Connecticut and Indiana in its first two games of its inaugural season at the highest level of college football. The over is 8-1 in the Wolverines’ last nine home games vs. a team with a losing road record.

                    (1) Alabama at (21) Arkansas (21, 53)

Brandon Allen has been taking first-team reps and could be the starting QB for Arkansas on after senior Tyler Wilson suffered a blow to the head in the first half of a stunning loss to Louisiana-Monroe last week. This line opened at -15 and quickly rose above 20 points. Alabama is 5-1 ATS in its last six road games.

                    (8) West Virginia at James Madison (TBD)

The Dukes have outscored their opponents by a combined 97-10 in the FCS, but will face a top FBS foe on Saturday. West Virginia has won 12 straight against FCS programs.

                    (17) Florida at Tennessee (-3, 47)

The Volunteers are seeking their first win in eight years over Florida on Saturday night. The Gators have won three straight over the Vols in Knoxville and the road team is 3-0-1 ATS in their last four meetings.

North Texas at (14) Kansas State

Kansas State QB Collin Klein was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after accounting for four touchdowns in a dominant victory over Miami last week. The Wildcats have won 10 straight contests in September.

                    UAB at (9) South Carolina (-33.5, 55)

South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is 45-0 in his college career against teams from outside the BCS. It’s hard to believe he won’t pick up the 200th win of his college coaching career against the Blazers on Saturday.

                    Florida Atlantic at (7) Georgia (-42, 53.5)

Georgia has put up more than 40 points in each of its first two games and is in the midst of a 12-game, regular-season win streak. The over is 4-0 in the Bulldogs’ last four games vs. Sun Belt opponents.

                    (3) USC at (16) Stanford (7.5, 56.5)

Trojans’ QB Matt Barkley leads the nation with 10 touchdown passes, tossing six last week to power past Syracuse. Stanford has won four of the last five games between the teams, but has never won four straight over Southern Cal in the 107-year rivalry.

                    Idaho at (2) LSU (-42, 55)

The Tigers can become the first team in NCAA history to win 40 straight non-conference regular season games Saturday. Idaho is averaging just eight points in its first two games, which ranks 119th out of 120 teams in the FBS.

                    (19) Notre Dame at (10) Michigan State (-6, 42.5)

Notre Dame holds a 46-28-1 series advantage, including 15 of the last 20 meetings at Spartan Stadium. Nine of the last 12 meetings between the teams have been decided by a touchdown or less.

                    Utah State at (22) Wisconsin (-14, 51)

Utah State is coming off a huge victory over bitter rival Utah and is undefeated after two games for the first time since 1997. Wisconsin has won 17 straight at Camp Randall Stadium and its last home loss to a non-conference opponent was in 2003. However, Wisconsin is coming off a disappointing defeat at Oregon State last week and this week the Badgers fired their offensive line coach.

                    (12) Texas at Mississippi (10.5, 47.5)

The Rebels have been outscored by an average of 20.1 points in losing all eight meetings against Top 25 foes over the previous two seasons. Texas is 32-1 against unranked non-conference opponents over the past nine years.

                    Houston at (23) UCLA (-17, 74)

Jim Mora has helped propel UCLA back into the rankings for the first time since early September 2008 after opening the season with victories over Rice and Nebraska. The home squad is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

South Carolina State at (25) Arizona (TBD)

Quarterback Matt Scott has the Arizona offense firing on all cylinders. The Wildcats are averaging 562.5 yards per game with Scott looking like an All-American in the process. The Arizona defense has to find a way to stop a SCSU rushing attack that is averaging 177.5 yards per game.

Washington State (-13.5) pummeled UNLV 59-7 in Pullman LY, visits Strip this week after Rebels lost 17-14 at home to I-AA NAU, a horrific loss that puts Coach Hauck on hot seat. Coogs in first year under Leach, a passing wizard- this is first time since '06 they've been favored on road. Over last 4+ years, Wazzu is 2-21 SU on foreign soil. Coogs QB Tuel got hurt late in LW's shaky 24-20 win over I-AA Eastern Washington, a team that beat Idaho week before. Soph Halliday would be making 2nd career start. UNLV is 7-2-1 as home dog under Hauck, losing opener in OT to Minnesota this season. Mountain West underdogs are 10-1 vs spread so far this season; Pac-12 favorites are 3-10, 1-3 on road.

Washington State at UNLV: What bettors need to know
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Washington State at UNLV (8.5, 55.5)

UNLV, which has lost seven straight games dating to last season, will try to bounce back from a stunning 17-14 home loss to Northern Arizona when it hosts Washington State of the Pac-12 on Friday. Northern Arizona was picked to finish ninth in the Big Sky Conference and was coming off a 63-6 pounding by Arizona State. The Rebels are 4-23 in two-plus seasons under Bobby Hauck, who is understandably feeling the heat. Not exactly the best timing for a national TV game for the Rebels, especially considering that the Cougars steamrolled them 59-7 last year in Pullman.

                        TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Washington State -8.5, O/U 55.5. The line opened Washington State -11 at most sportsbooks.

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the mid-90s and sunny skies at Sam Boyd Stadium. Winds will be light out of the east.

ABOUT WASHINGTON STATE: (1-1): The Cougars are opening things up offensively under first-year coach Mike Leach with mixed results. Washington State managed only a pair of field goals in a season-opening 30-6 loss at BYU but hung on for a hard-fought 24-20 victory over Eastern Washington last week. The Cougars, behind senior quarterback Jeff Tuel's two touchdown passes, led 24-14 at halftime. Kicker Andrew Furney had a 60-yard field goal last week, the second-longest in Washington State history behind Jason Hanson's 62-yarder at UNLV in 1991. Washington State safety Deone Bucannon was suspended by the Pac-12 for the first half of the UNLV game for a late hit on Eastern Washington wide receiver Greg Herd.

ABOUT UNLV (0-2): The hot seat got a whole lot hotter for Hauck after the Rebels blew a 14-0 halftime lead and lost on a last-second field goal last week. That marked the second loss to a FCS school in 11 games for UNLV. However, the Rebels have a history of performing well in Friday games (6-1-1). Junior running back Tim Cornett has been a bright spot for UNLV, rushing for 278 yards and three touchdowns. That ranks him second in the Mountain West and eighth in the FBS in rushing.

                        TRENDS

*Over is 4-1 in Cougars’ last five non-conference games.
*Cougars are 6-2 ATS in their last eight games following a S.U. win.
*Rebels are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
*Over is 9-3 in Rebels’ last 12 non-conference games.

                        EXTRA POINTS

                        1. Cornett has reached the century mark in four of his last five games, the first Rebel to accomplish that feat since Dominique Dorsey in 2004.

                        2. Washington State WR Marquess Wilson enters the week as the Pac-12 Conference's active leader in receiving yards (2,502).

                        3. Washington State is 5-0 against UNLV. The Cougars, led by QB Drew Bledsoe and Hanson, defeated the Rebels 40-13 in Washington State's only previous Las Vegas appearance in 1991.

                          Week 3

                          Saturday's games

                          Top games

Penn State lost another WR (transfer) this week; they're 0-2 after brutal 17-16 loss at Virginia, when they missed three FGs, had a PAT blocked. Lions have now covered just three of last 16 non-league games. Navy got pounded 50-10 in Ireland by Notre Dame two weeks ago; over last 10+ years, they're 24-10 vs spread as road underdogs. Very tough to prepare for the option in just one week, which negates lot of Penn State's edges in athletic ability. Big Dozen road favorites are 2-5 vs spread this year.

Northwestern opens season @ Syracuse/Vandy/BC; what other school in BCS league plays that aggressive a schedule? Since 2003, BC is 18-7 vs spread as road underdogs; they've got 17 starters back, are 10-7 vs spread in non-ACC games last 4+ years. Northwestern (+4.5) won LY 24-17 in Boston, outrushing Eagles 227-104 but giving up 351 passing yards. Over last 10+ years, Wildcats are awful 6-18 vs spread as home favorites. Big Dozen home favorites are 5-10 vs spread, 3-5 at home; ACC road dogs are 1-3. Wildcats gave up 470 passing yards at Syracuse in opener, cut that down to 217 vs Vanderbilt last week.

Maryland coach Edsall was UConn's coach from '99-'10, so he recruited most of Huskies' older players, making this an emotional game. Not the best week in Storrs, with legendary hoop coach Calhoun retiring. Terps are 3-6 vs spread as home underdogs last 3+ years; they had a good win at Temple last week, after surviving 7-6 snoozer vs I-AA foe in opener. Maryland has 9 starters back on defense, only 6 on offense, 3 on OL. Huskies are 10-5 as road favorites last 10+ years, but they lost 10-7 at home to NC State last week, despite allowing only 12 FDs- they turned ball over four times (-3).

Underdogs are 9-4 vs spread in last 13 USC-Stanford games; Trojans lost four of last five in series, streak that started when Cardinal upset USC as a 41-point underdog, 24-23. Dogs covered three of last four in series at Stanford, with USC (+10.5) losing 37-35 in last visit here. Stanford beat Duke last week, but Blue Devils had 370 passing yards, bad news with senior QB Barkley (38 starts) in town, Trojans went east and won 42-29 over Syracuse at Swamp Stadium last week. USC has 9 starters back on offense, 4 on OL, but they're not deep. Stanford has 6 starters back on offense, 3 on OL, but a new QB with Luck in NFL.

Favorites are 8-3 vs spread in last 11 East Carolina-Southern Miss tilts, with Pirates winning two of last three visits here, with wins by total of four points. UM lost 12 of 22 starters, had week off to work on things after giving up 632 yards in ugly 49-20 loss (+19) in opener at Nebraska. Eagles have new coach, new QB, but they do have four senior starters on OL. USM is 13-9 as home favorites the last four seasons. Pirates are 4-9 in last 13 games as road dog. ECU got waxed at South Carolina last week after giving up 419 yards to I-AA Appalachian State in its opener, so they're also struggling, with new QB.

Ole Miss off to good start under new coach Freeze, who was 2-0 as dog at Arkansas State LY; Rebels had 332 rushing yards last week vs UTEP that held Oklahoma to 205 the week before, but over last four years, Ole Miss is just 2-7 as home dogs- they're stepping way up in class here, vs Texas squad that is 9-5 as road favorites since '08. Texas has next week off then starts Big X play; they've got 9 starters back on offense, 6 on defense, with 4 starters back on OL. Hard to believe Texas is just 15-12 since start of '10; they play Oklahoma State-West Va-Oklahoma in three games after next week's bye- they're looking to get sharp here.

Missouri got run off home field 41-20 by Georgia last week, when UGa was down four defensive starters; Mizzou is just 7-10 as home favorite last four years, as Faurot Field has never been considered huge edge for hosts. Tigers (+9) lost 37-30 at Arizona State LY, outgaining Sun Devils 501-492 but new coach Graham has ASU more disciplined- they waxed Illinois 45-14 last week (in fairness, Illini QB didn't play). Sun Devils are young squad, with 14 new starters and frosh/soph sharing QB duties. Pac-12 road teams are 1-5 vs spread out of conference on road this year. Mizzou QB Franklin is doubtful with an injury, as of late Friday nite.

Underdog covered 12 of last 15 BYU-Utah rivalry games that used to be MWC games, but are now just for bragging rights; Utes (+3) won 54-10 in LY's game, outrushing Cougars 242-11- it was Utah's third win in last four series games, but Utes' QB Wynn quit ball this week after suffering another shoulder injury in last week's shocking loss at Utah State. BYU has senior QB (19 starts) and three starters back on OL; this is biggest game on their schedule, since they're independent. Utah has Pac-12 ked to look forward to. BYU lost four of last five visits here, with only win 33-31 (-10.5) six years ago.

North Carolina (-13.5) won ugly 14-7 game vs Louisville LY, as neither team gained 300 total yards; Tar Heels (-10) gave up 362 passing yards in 28-27 upset loss at Wake Forest last week. UNC is 6-3-1 as road dog last four years; Fedora was 8-4 as road dog in his four years at Southern Miss. Carolina has 7 starters back on offense, 4 on OL and a good QB learning new system. Cardinals are 8-13 as home favorites since Petrino skipped town, but they're favored to win Big East this year behind soph QB Bridgewater-- they had 219 yards rushing, 247 passing in easy win over rival Kentucky in their opener.

Arkansas not only lost as 30-point favorite last week, star QB Wilson had head injury, is ?? to go here, which is why line has jumped from 6.5 to over 20. Hogs lost five in row to Bama, but three of last six in series were decided by 4 or less points. Tide (-7) escaped with 24-20 win last time they visited, but waxed Razorbacks 38-14 LY, outgaining Arkansas 397-226. Bama already crushed Michigan on neutral field this year; since '08, they are 13-5 vs spread as road favorites. Coaching mismatch with dysfunctional Arkansas staff (Petrino' brother is calling plays) while the Tide has things running at peak efficiency under master coach Saban.

Tennessee is favored over Florida for first time since '04, last time they won; they've lost to Gators last seven years, giving up 30+ points four of last five years. Florida was gutty in LW's 20-17 win at Texas A&M, rallying from behind to win, but now they're facing SEC's best passing attack with Vols' QB Bray having gone 27-41/333 in 35-21 neutral field win over NC State in their opener. Tennessee has 19 of 22 starters back, with whole OL back; despite their struggles (13-14 SU) under Dooley, they're 6-2 vs spread as home favorites. Last week was first time in 4+ years Florida covered (1-4) as road underdog.

Home side won last four Notre Dame-Michigan State games, with Irish losing on fake FG for TD in OT last time they were here. Kelly is 2-1 as road dog with Irish, 12-6-1 dating back to his Central Michigan tenure. ND may have QB issues after Golson got benched late in Purdue game when he coughed ball up on own 15-yard line with 17-10 lead, and Rees led team to winning score. Irish had only 52 rushing yards vs Purdue but could've had little jet lag after Ireland trip. State pounded Chippewas in rare trip to Mt Pleasant last week 41-0; they're 7-5 as home faves in last two seasons. Big Dozen home favorites are 3-5 out of conference.

UL-Monroe shocked Arkansas as 30-point dogs last week, passing ball for 412 yards, so no soft touch for Auburn squad that is 0-2 this year and 8-7 since Cam Newton left town. Tigers are 9-8 as home faves under Chizik; Miss State outgained them 388-216 last week, as only Auburn TD came on opening kick of second half. With LSU visiting next week, Auburn needs win here to avoid what would likely be an 0-4 start. ULM
is 22-15 as road dog since '05 and looking for first-ever winning season in I-A ball; they've got Baylor coming to Monroe next Friday, so level of excitement is way up. Auburn will be a tense team here.

Alabama at Arkansas: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            Alabama at Arkansas (20, 53.5)

It was supposed to be the first “Game of the Year,” but Saturday’s Alabama-Arkansas clash in Fayetteville lost luster last week when the Razorbacks were shockingly upset at home by Louisiana-Monroe. Arkansas, a 30-point favorite, blew a 28-7 lead and lost 34-31 in overtime. The No. 21 Razorbacks also might have lost star quarterback Tyler Wilson, who left the game with a head injury. He had not been cleared to practice or play as of mid-week, but was listed as questionable. The top-ranked Crimson Tide held up their end leading up to this supposed showdown, whipping Michigan and Western Kentucky. Alabama has won four straight in the series, and has an all-time edge of 12-8.

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the low-70s with a 35 percent chance of thunderstorms at Reynolds Razorback Stadium. Winds will be light out of the south.

ABOUT ALABAMA (2-0, 0-0 SEC): Quarterback AJ McCarron has thrown 135 passes without an interception. This season, he is 25-of-40 for 418 yards with six touchdowns. Last year, he had a streak of 152 passes without a pick. He operates behind an offensive line featuring three All-Americans. The defense, led by tackle Jesse Williams, safety Robert Lester and shutdown corner Dee Milliner, forced four turnovers in last week’s 35-0 victory over Western Kentucky. Alabama has 43 lettermen from last year's national championship team.

ABOUT ARKANSAS (1-1, 0-0 SEC): Wilson isn’t Arkansas’ lone health concern. Fullbacks Kiero Small and Kody Walker, and cornerback Tevin Mitchel will miss Saturday’s game with injuries. Players insisted this week they remain 100 percent behind coach John L. Smith, but this is a program in shock after expecting to contend for the national title. If Wilson can’t play, Brandon Allen would get the start, with Brandon Mitchell available, too. Star running back Knile Davis is off to a slow start, averaging 3.9 yards per carry.

                            3. Arkansas’ Wilson, a one-time Heisman candidate, hit 11 of 20 throws for 196 yards with two touchdowns and an interception before he was knocked out of last week’s game.

USC at Stanford: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              USC at Stanford (8, 57)

It would be nearly impossible for the drama of the past two meetings to be equalled when No. 3 Southern California travels to Palo Alto, Calif., to face No. 16 Stanford, but the matchup is nonetheless one of the most-anticipated games of the week and a key contest in shaping the Pac-12 title race. The Cardinal have won three straight meetings - including the past two on the final play of the game - and four of the last five. Stanford has never won four straight in the series, which dates to 1905. USC leads the series 58-28-3. Stanford is 5-2 at home against ranked opponents since 2009, including a 1-2 mark against top-10 teams.

                              TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Fox.

                              LINE: USC -8, O/U 57.

WEATHER: Forecasts are calling for temperatures in the high-70s and clear skies at Stanford Stadium. Winds will be light out of the west.

ABOUT USC (2-0, 0-0 Pac-12): The Trojans boast one of the most talented offenses in the country, led by senior quarterback Matt Barkley, who leads the nation with 10 touchdown passes through two games. Barkley has two dangerous targets in receivers Robert Woods and Marqise Lee, and the passing game is complemented by two strong runners in Curtis McNeal and Penn State transfer Silas Redd, who had his first 100-yard rushing game as a Trojan last week. The defense appeared susceptible to the pass in last week's 42-29 victory over Syracuse, allowing 322 of the Orange's 455 total yards through the air.

ABOUT STANFORD (2-0, 0-0): The Cardinal had to reload after losing a number of stars off last year's team to the NFL, but have picked up where they left off despite playing 10 true freshmen and having 24 players make their collegiate debut through two games. Among the new starters is senior quarterback Josh Nunes, who set career highs with 16 completions, 275 passing yards and three touchdowns in last week's 50-13 victory against Duke. The Cardinal will have to do a better job against Barkley and the USC passing game after allowing 358 yards through the air last week, but the run defense is stout, giving up only 27 yards on the ground to the Blue Devils. The running game, led by senior Stepfan Taylor (185 yards), could help keep Barkley off the field.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Trojans are 4-0 ATS in their last four conference games.
                              * Road team is 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
                              * Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings at Stanford Stadium.
                              * Trojans are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. The Trojans have scored at least 30 points in 10 consecutive games.

                              2. Barkley ranks third on USC's career list for passing yards (9,613) and total offense (9,555), trailing Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart on both lists. He is second to Leinart (99) with 90 touchdown passes.

                              3. Stanford is seeking its third straight 3-0 start, something it hasn't done since 1970-72. Cardinal coach David Shaw is trying to join Chuck Taylor (1951-52) as the only coaches in school history to start 3-0 in their first two seasons.
