    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- James Shields blanked Texas on two hits; BJ Upton hit three homers as the Rays stayed within a game of the second Wild Card spot by beating the Rangers, 6-0.

-- ESPN is actually televising a Bronx-Boston game Wednesday night, as they show Tampa-Baltimore on ESPN2 at same time. Amazing. Its like they have an addiction to show Boston-NY games, no matter what.

-- Pirates got swept at home by the Cubs, are now 2.5 games out of Wild Card spot; they need a 10-13 finish for their first winning year since '92.

Only drama in NL looks to be Cards-Dodgers-Pirates scrapping for the last Wild Card spot. Nats-Braves-Reds and Giants are looking good.

-- San Diego's Chase Headley leads MLB with 19 HRs, 60 RBI since the All-Star break. All that while playing in a pitchers' park.

-- After 140 games, Baltimore has allowed 29 more runs than they scored, but right now, they're holding down a playoff spot. Amazing.

-- Dodgers are 6-9 since the Boston trade. Red Sox are 3-12.

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up Opening Day in the NFL.....

    13) Bronco fans have to be happy as hell, watching Peyton Manning lead Denver to a 31-19 win over Pittsburgh; Steeler defense never stopped the Broncos after the first quarter (36 plays, 291 yards on last four drives that weren't kneel-downs at the end of each half).

    12) Robert Griffin III's first six passes were all behind the line; his 7th pass went for an 88-yard TD, as Washington took advantage of a Saints' squad that doesn't have its head coach, and is learning a new defense. Redskins posted a 40-32 upset in the Superdome; three 1st round picks for RGIII didn't look bad on this day.

Redskins averaged 11.5 yards per pass attempt. best in NFL; Jets' 9.9 was next-highest figure. Could've won big bucks betting that exacta.

    11) Teams that scored a TD on defense or special teams were 4-5 this week, surprisingly bad; Miami's punt return TD was their only touchdown all day. It doesn't help that the Dolphins' best WR might be their rookie starting QB Taneyhill, who played WR for two years at Texas A&M.

    10) Michael Vick had a brutal day, with one TD and four INTs on his first 14 drives of the day, but he led the Eagles 91 yards for a TD when it mattered most, and the Iggles escaped the Dawg Pound with a 17-16 win.

    9) Atlanta led the Chiefs 20-17 in Arrowhead when the Chiefs missed a game-tying 40-yard FG with 9:07 left in third quarter; they went into the tank after that, and got drilled 40-24 in their home opener.

    8) Kevin Kolb came off the bench to save Arizona after John Skelton hurt his ankle; he led the Redbirds to the winning score in a strange 20-16 game when the refs gave Seattle an extra timeout in the last minute, when Seahawks had the ball inside the 10-yard line at the end of the game.

All 16 Seattle points came on drives that started in Arizona territory.

    7) Green Bay ran ball 14 times for 45 yards, not winning numbers; they lost 30-22 at home to San Francisco, which ran ball 32 time for 186 yards. You're not beating good teams without some balance on offense.

    6) Jets hung 48 points on Buffalo, scoring a defensive TD and one on a punt return, proving for the 10,000th time that exhibition games mean next to nothing- they converted 10 of 14 on third down in crushing Buffalo.

    5) We're charting plays of 20+ yards this season, think its an important statistic. In 14 games this weekend, there have been 117 explosive (20+ yard) plays, an average of 4.2 per team.

Chicago led league with nine explosive plays Sunday; Carolina/Indy both had seven. Rams/Seahawks had the least (one each) and both of them lost, too. Anyway, we'll track it this season to see if it is significant.

    4) Breaking down explosive plays by downs, we find that 47 of them came on first down, 46 on second, 20 on hird and four on 4th down. Think there are teams out there who aren't aggressive enough on first down.

    3) Home favorites are 4-5 so far this week, home dogs 3-2 (2-0 in divisional games). Over is 8-6 heading into the Monday doubleheader.

    2) Teams with a positive turnover ratio are 8-2 this week; only Rams (+3) and Browns (+1) lost, and both those teams were winning in the last 90 seconds. Young teams need to learn how to finish off close games.

    1) Five rookie QBs started this week; they went 1-4, 2-3 against spread, with Redskins only team to win. RGIII didn't play like a rookie.

          Monday, September 10

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

          STREAKING

Wandy Rodriguez, Pittsburgh Pirates (10-13, 3.71)

Rodriguez struck out seven over seven scoreless innings Tuesday to pick up the win over the Astros. The lefty has won back-to-back decisions and three of his last four starts, compiling a 1.25 ERA over his last 21 2/3 innings. He has a tough road start in Cincinnati next.

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (8-10, 3.96)

Kendrick allowed two runs over six innings Tuesday to the Reds. The righty is 4-1 with a 1.53 ERA in his last five starts and has a favorable matchup against the Marlins next time out.

          SLUMPING

Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers (9-11, 4.58)

Porcello yielded three runs over 5 2/3 innings Tuesday as Detroit fell to Cleveland. The right-hander has lost five consecutive starts with a 1.57 WHIP over 28 2/3 innings. He takes the hill against the White Sox on Monday.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (12-7, 3.29)

Vogelsong allowed six earned runs over 3 1/3 innings in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The 35-year-old hurler has allowed 10 runs in his last 9 1/3 innings pitched and now has to deal in hitter-friendly Coors Field against the Rockies.

Rounding the bases: The best bets in the bigs
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in major league baseball.

            Hot team: Los Angeles Angels

            Last week: 6-0
            Season record: 77-63
Upcoming schedule: vs. Athletics, at Royals

Skinny: The Angels swept the board last week, going a perfect 6-0 with sweeps over Oakland and Detroit. Los Angeles begins a crucial four-game set against the A’s beginning Monday.

            Cold team: Boston Red Sox
            Last week: 1-5
            Season record: 63-78
Upcoming schedule: vs. Yankees, at Blue Jays

Skinny: The misery continues in Beantown. That’s good news for bettors who are wagering against the Red Sox. Boston was swept in a three-game set with the Blue Jays and only pulled out one victory in a three-game series with the Mariners last week.

            Over team: Milwaukee Brewers
            Last week: 7-0
            Season O/U record: 79-57-4
Upcoming schedule: vs. Braves, vs. Mets

Skinny: The Brewers have played over the total in eight consecutive games, including all seven contests last week against the Marlins and Cardinals. The Milwaukee offense ranks in the top five in the league in runs per game, home runs and stolen bases.

            Under team: Atlanta Braves
            Last week: 6-1
            Season O/U record: 61-75-5
Upcoming schedule: at Brewers, vs. Nationals

Skinny: Atlanta pitchers posted back-to-back-to-back shutouts last week for the first time since Sept. 4-7, 2002. The staff only allowed six runs in seven games, a major reason why the Braves continue to be a strong Under choice for bettors.

The two hottest teams in the American League open a high-stakes, four-game series when the Los Angeles Angels host the Oakland Athletics. The Angels have won six straight and 11 of 12 games and just swept three games from the Athletics in Oakland last week. The Athletics have captured 12 of 15 games with the losses to the Angels being their only defeats since August 23. Both teams still trail Texas in the American League West race.

Oakland just swept a three-game set in Seattle and has won nine consecutive road games. The Athletics are 3 1/2 games behind the Rangers in the West and possess a 2 1/2-game cushion in the AL wild-card race. The Angels outscored Oakland 21-5 in last week’s contest and sit six games behind Texas. Los Angeles is a season-best 14 games over .500 and is one game behind the Baltimore Orioles for the AL’s second wild-card spot. The Angels are 8-7 against Oakland entering the final four meetings of the regular season between the teams.

College football odds: Week 3 opening line report

Nothing skews the odds like good ole unbridled hate. There are plenty of rivalry games on the Week 3 board, which is a breath of fresh air after two weeks of FCS-versus-FBS stinkers.

The one game everyone is keeping a close eye on is the SEC showdown between Alabama and Arkansas. The Razorbacks had salt thrown in the wound during their upset loss to UL Monroe this past weekend.

Quarterback Tyler Wilson left the game with a head injury and is day-to-day heading into Week 3, keeping most books from posting a line on this game.

The Sports Club, a Las Vegas-based oddsmaking service, has sent out Alabama -14. Peter Korner, founder of The Sports Club, says they weighed Wilson’s status and aimed for a suggested spread somewhere in the middle.

“It’s an in-between number. It’s probably not right either or. We were discussing two or 2.5 points (for Wilson’s value), so we stuck it in the middle,” Korner told Covers. “By the way the announcers were talking, it sounded like he might be able to play. We don’t recommend putting the game up but we did want to send out a number so the guys behind the counter have an idea of the spread if someone asks about it.”

Korner says Wilson’s value to the odds would be higher if the spread were closer. But, with the Crimson Tide set as two-touchdown favorites, they didn’t want to go overboard in terms of adjustment.

Here’s a quick glance at the opening lines for some of Week 3’s other marquee matchups:

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Michigan State Spartans (-3.5)

These two rivals have traded blows, splitting their last four meetings SU and ATS. With the series swinging to East Lansing, The Sports Club sent out a suggested spread of MSU -2.5 while online books opened the Spartans as high as -4. To no surprise, early money is on the Irish and will likely continue to drive the line in the other direction due to the public appeal of Notre Dame.

USC Trojans at Stanford Cardinal (+10)

This classic Pac-12 grudge match opened with the home side as low as +7.5, which has been driven up to +10 by early-bird bettors. The Cardinal didn’t look sharp in a Week 1 scare to San Jose State but rebounded with a dominant 50-13 performance versus Duke last Saturday. Southern Cal is 2-0 but has underperformed in the eyes of oddsmakers, failing to cover in both games. The Trojans are just 1-4 ATS in their last five games with Stanford.

Florida Gators at Tennessee Volunteers (-2.5)

This spread was sent out with the Gators as suggested 2.5-point favorites after a comeback win over Texas A&M. However, sportsbooks had other thoughts and flipped the short line to Vols -2.5. Tennessee downed North Carolina State in the opener and battered Georgia State 51-13 in Week 2, but failed to cover the 46-points. Florida has won seven in a row over Tennessee and is 4-1-1 ATS in its last six trips to Rocky Top. ESPN’s College Game Day will be broadcasting from Knoxville for the first time since 2004 this Saturday.

Tuesday's betting tips: Mets trying to wake up bats

                            Weather watch

Thunderstorms are in the forecast for Coors Field, where the Rockies host the Giants Tuesday. Winds will reach speeds of up to 11 mph, blowing NNW towards the first base line, and there is a 40 percent chance of rain later in the evening.

                            Betting news and notes

-- Milwaukee OF Corey Hart is day-to-day while suffering through plantar fascia. The Brewers are +106 underdogs hosting the Braves Tuesday.

-- The Buffalo Bills, already reeling from the loss of RB Fred Jackson for the next few weeks, will also be without WR David Nelson. He’s lost for the season after suffering a torn ligament in his right knee. Buffalo is a 3.5-point home favorite against Kansas City in Week 2.

-- Wisconsin is desperate to improve its running game after an upset loss to Oregon State in Week 2. The Badgers fired offensive line coach Mike Markuson this week after Heisman hopeful Montee Ball averaged under four yards per carry through the first two games of the season. Wisconsin is -14 hosting Utah State Saturday.

-- The Phillies have won 19 of their last 27 games at Citizens Bank Park. Philadelphia is a -205 home fave with Roy Halladay on the mound Tuesday.

-- New York manager Terry Collins pushed back the time of his team’s batting practice Monday in an effort to try and jump-start his team’s anemic offense. The Mets have just six total runs in their last four games, playing under the total in three of those outings.

-- The Yankees have won eight of 12 meetings with the Red Sox this season. New York is a -130 road favorite in Fenway Park Tuesday.

-- The Braves are 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position in their past two games. Atlanta outhit Milwaukee on Monday 10-4. All 10 Atlanta hits were singles. The Braves have played under the total in eight of their last 10 contests.

-- Los Angeles OF Mike Trout went 1-for-3 in the opener to raise his average to .197 in 19 career games against Oakland. The Halos are -151 favorites versus the A’s.

                              Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Wisconsin fired its offensive line coach, after two games? Wow.

-- Sickens me to report that before Sunday, Detroit Lions had lost their last 51 games with a minus-3 or worse turnover ratio. Last win? 1972.

-- Nevada sportsbooks made $7.2M from booking baseball in July, the best baseball month they've had in the last eight years.

-- Cards' 1B Lance Berkman had knee surgery, is out for the season.

-- Five NFL teams scored 40+ points this week, most ever for a Week 1.

-- Our thoughts and prayers are with Jerry (King) Lawler, who collapsed during the WWE telecast and was taken to a Montreal hospital, after he had CPR performed on him backstage at the Bell Centre.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

                              13) Couple things that could push the NFL/referees’ standoff towards a conclusion: Firstly, the officials take in an average of $5,500 a week.

It’s a safe assumption that most of the refs are married, and the wives are going to start bitching about both the decrease in income, and having hubby home all weekend.

                              12) Secondly, other than the Jaguar-Viking game, which went OT, average length of Sunday’s games was 3:14, which is longer than what the TV gurus would like. TV gurus carry a lot of weight with NFL folks.

                              11) Speaking of which, Jerry Jones still hasn’t given up on the idea of an 18-game regular season; eventually, that’s going to be one way to get a much bigger TV contract, and making money is Jerry’s thing. I’d like it, but not sure the Players’ Union would go for it.

                              10) Jones’ Cowboys are practicing with piped-in crowd noise this week, to get ready for game Sunday in noisy Seattle.

                              9) There were 25 defensive pass interferences in Week 1, as much as in Week 1 of 2010/2011 combined; only 2 of 13 replay challenges resulted in the call being changed.

                              8) Underdogs dominated AFC West play LY, with dogs covering 11 of the 12 divisional games. Home favorites were an unsightly 0-10 against the spread in divisional games.

                              7) So much for training camp: Maurice Jones-Drew was in on 49 of 81 Jacksonville plays Sunday. Adrian Peterson played on 32 of Minnesota’s 59 snaps. Neither guy ran the ball in exhibition games this summer.

                              6) The “Fox 40” pea-less whistle, which almost all referees use now, makes a noise of 115 decibels; the old whistle, the one with the pea in it? That made a sound of 80 decibels.

                              5) Gary Bettman makes $8M a year as NHL Commissioner? Think he could name every NHL team and what division they’re in?

                              4) Phoenix Suns are hiring a new gorilla mascot for next season; the ideal candidate has a college degree and two years of previous mascot experience. Have to be a lot of people fitting that description hanging around the desert, looking for work.

                              3) Oakland A’s have nine home games left, three big series with Orioles-Texas-Seattle; they couldn’t sell any tickets Monday, because it’s the day of a Raider home game. Terrific.

                              2) How is Nike CEO Phil Knight in the Basketball Hall of Fame and Jerry Tarkanian isn’t? How does this make any sense? What would make sense are separate Halls of Fame for the NBA and college hoop.

                              1) Hawk Harrelson, arguably one of baseball's worst announcers (White Sox TV) is one of 41 finalists for the Ford Frick award, which is induction into Baseball’s Hall of Fame.

If he were to win, it’s a sure sign the Mayans were right and the apocalypse will be happening soon. Very soon.
