    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Six most popular picks and six least popular picks in Hilton handicapping contest, which has 700+ contestants, all of whom who pick five NFL games a week against the spread. They put up $1,500 each, so these are serious handicappers........

    6) Miami Dolphins, 93
    5) Houston Texans, 96
    4) Carolina Panthers, 126
    3) Pittsburgh Steelers, 134
    2) New Jersey Giants, 159
    1) Kansas City Chiefs, 176

    T27) Jacksonville Jaguars, 34
    T27) Arizona Cardinals, 34
    29) Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 28
    30) Chicago Bears, 22
    31) New Orleans Saints, 21
    32) Cleveland Browns, 17

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday.......

    13) Every year I'm reminded how awesome football weekends are; Saturday was no exception. Louisiana-Monroe stunned Arkansas as a 30-point dog, winning 34-31 in OT after trailing 28-7 early in third quarter.

Cool sight after the game was a state trooper who "protects" Coach Todd Berry stopping the coach on the field and hugging him after ULM scored the winning TD. Pure joy, very fun to see.

Horrendous night for Arkansas, which lost star QB Tyler Wilson with a broken collarbone; Razorbacks play Alabama next week. Not good.

    12) If you had $100 on UL-Monroe on the money line at 5Dimes.com, that ticket is now worth a cool $5,750. Not a bad day's work.

    11) Michigan 31, Air Force 25; total yards: 422-417, Michigan. Air Force didn't make any coaches/players available to the media after the game, thats how hard they took this loss. Denard Robinson enjoyed the AF defense a little more than he enjoyed playing against Alabama.

    10) Clemson/Washington State both made 60+-yard FGs Saturday; Rice hit a 45-yarder at the gun to win at Kansas. Why doesn't every D-I team have a good kicker? Oregon State's kicker missed a 40-yarder, short/wide right. How is this possible? Short? Go recruit a freakin' kicker!!!

    9) Penn State missed four FGs and had a PAT blocked in a brutal 17-16 loss at Virginia, but their kicker jumped ship and transferred to Texas when the NCAA sanctions came down, so can't blame the coaches there.

Cavaliers were -4 in turnovers, had 10 penalties for 70 yards (PSU had 24 yards on three penalties), were outrushed 121-32 and they still won. Odd.

    8) Kansas State outgained Miami 498-262, completing nine of 11 passes for 210 yards in an easy 52-13 win. Tough times for the 'canes' defense.

    7) Skip Holtz won another road game, this one in miraculous fashion, as South Florida hit on two TD passes of 50+ yards in last 3:00, rallying back from a 21-6 first quarter deficit to stun Nevada 32-31 in Reno. Not often a team wins a game on a 56-yard TD pass with 0:36 left, but USF did.

    6) When Texas (-39) hammered New Mexico 45-0, it was first time in ten tries this season that a Mountain West road underdog failed to cover; thats right, MWC road dogs are 9-1 against the spread in non-league games.

If you care about such things, Pac-12 favorites are 3-10 against spread.

    5) However, since '93, Big Dozen teams are now a ludicrous 5-28-1 SU in regular season games, when visiting a Pac-12 foe; Wisconsin, Nebraska and Illinois all had unproductive trips west this weekend. .

    4) I don't think any I-A teams should play I-AA teams, and if God forbid they lose to one, it should count as minus-1 win towards their going to a bowl game. Colorado-Colorado St.-UNLV all had such disasters this week.

    3) Houston's offensive coordinator quit (got fired) last week; it didn't help the Cougars, who lost 56-49 at home to Louisiana Tech. For record, Houston was 53-77 for 580 yards passing- they gained 693 yards, but also 15 penalties for 138 yards. Big East can't be happy with this.

    2) SMU beat SFAustin 52-0, in one of weirdest boxscores I've ever seen; Mustangs ran a blocked FG back for a TD, and also had three defensive TDs, three of their 10 takeaways. I've never seen a team turn ball over 10 times in one game. Hard to evaluate SMU from this mismatch.

    1) Mississippi State got a monkey off its back, outgaining Auburn 388-216 in a surprisingly easy 28-10 win. Auburn's only TD came on opening kick of the second half. Huge win for Dan Mullen's program.

1a) This week, home favorites were 10-15 vs spread in non-league games, home underdogs were 6-4-1. Home favorites were 4-2 in conference play.

      SASKATCHEWAN (4 - 5) at WINNIPEG (2 - 7) - 9/9/2012, 1:00 PM

WINNIPEG is 15-6 ATS (+8.4 Units) as an underdog of 3.5 to 9.5 points over the last 3 seasons.
WINNIPEG is 93-67 ATS (+19.3 Units) revenging a loss versus opponent since 1996.

      Armadillo's Write-Up

      Week 11

Home (18-18). Favorites (14-22), Over (18-18). West 11-7 vs East.

Same four matchups this weekend as last, just different home fields.........

Saslatchewan (4-5) @ Winnipeg (2-7)-- Coaching chamge didn't exactly help in last week's 52-0 loss in Regina; Riders outrushed them 175-46, outgained them 441-142 and had three takeaways (+3), but win snapped 5-game Saskatchewan skid, so not like Riders are having smooth sailing either. Bombers are 3-7 vs spread this season but respectable 2-2 at home, with losses by 10-3 points. Winnipeg was outscored 69-10 in first half of their last four games. Four of last six Roughrider games, three of last four Winnipeg games went over the total.

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3.5, 49.5)

The Roughriders (4-5) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 52-0 spanking of the Blue Bombers last week. The Riders will certainly have momentum on their side for this week's rematch after posting the largest shutout in team history. Kory Sheets ran for a season-best 106 yards, becoming the first Saskatchewan rusher to hit the 100-yard mark in a game since 2010.

Joey Elliott and Alex Brink combined for 96 yards passing and an interception in the lopsided loss. Winnipeg QBs rank last in the league in passing accuracy at 57 percent and second-to-last in total passing yards (2,321). The Bombers' offense is averaging a league-low 19.6 points per game, a huge reason why they're the bottom dwellers in the CFL standings.

      TRENDS AND NOTES

*Roughriders are 6-0 ATS in their last six games following a S.U. win.
*Saskatchewan is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall.
*Blue Bombers are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.
*Saskatchewan has won three straight over Winnipeg and eight of the last nine.

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

Zach Britton, Baltimore Orioles (5-1, 4.15)

Britton threw seven shutout innings to earn the win over Toronto on Tuesday. The lefty has racked up four consecutive quality starts and is 4-0 with a miniscule 0.94 ERA during that stretch. He takes the hill at Camden Yards in a key matchup versus the Yankees on Sunday.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (13-8, 3.88)

Shields surrendered three runs and five hits in a victory over the Yankees on Monday. The righty has now allowed three runs or less in each of his last seven starts and takes the mound at the Trop against the high-powered Rangers next.

                SLUMPING

Carlos Villanueva, Toronto Blue Jays (7-5, 3.42)

Villanueva allowed a season-high six runs across 6 2/3 innings as Toronto fell 12-0 to Baltimore on Tuesday. The right-hander has served up nine of his 13 home runs allowed this season over his past nine appearances, going 3-5 with a 4.09 ERA. He toes the rubber at Fenway Park against the Red Sox on Sunday afternoon.

Tommy Hanson, Atlanta Braves (12-8, 4.40)

Hanson gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings as Atlanta was beaten by Colorado on Tuesday. “Big Red” is 0-3 with a 5.23 ERA in four starts since returning from the DL due to a back strain. He hurls at Citi Field against the Mets next

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Dodgers at Giants
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A pair of southpaws and former Cy Young award winners meet Sunday Night as the Giants host the Dodgers in a key NL West battle.

                  ZITO'S STREAKING

Barry Zito won the Cy Young award in 2002 with the Oakland Athletics, but has a mediocre 10-8 record with a 4.51 ERA this season. The Giants have won his past six starts, but he’s only factored in the decision twice during that stretch. The lefty has allowed four runs or more in three of his last five outings and has gone 5 1/3 innings or less in four of his last five starts.

Zito has already faced the Dodgers three times this season, allowing seven runs and 18 hits in 18 1/3 innings. He pitched well in his first two starts against the Dodgers, allowing just three runs in 13 innings, but struggled on July 28th, surrendering four runs and seven hits in just 5 1/3 innings.

                  ACE'S WILD

Clayton Kershaw has been one of the most consistent pitchers in the league the past few seasons and is the defending Cy Young Award winner in the National League. The left-hander is having another strong season with a 12-8 record and an excellent 2.79 ERA with 201 strikeouts.

Kershaw will be facing the Giants for the fifth time this season, pitching solid in each of those outings. He has allowed two runs or less in all four starts versus San Francisco and has squandered only six runs in 31 innings versus the Giants. The Dodgers have gone just 1-3 straight-up in those four games despite his impressive numbers. Kershaw has received little run support, as Los Angeles has scored one run or less in each loss.

                  INJURY REPORT

The Dodgers have been bitten by the injury bug. Pitchers Kenley Jansen and Chad Billingsley are currently on the DL. Jensen is dealing with a heart ailment and Billingsley is suffering from right elbow pain. Dee Gordon is also on the DL with a thumb problem.

The Giants are missing pitchers Brian Wilson (Tommy John) and Clay Hensley (groin). We also must mention the suspended Melky Cabrera, who will be out for the rest of the regular season and the first five games of the postseason, if San Francisco qualifies.

                  TRENDS

*Dodgers are 19-7 in Kershaw's last 26 Sunday starts.
*Dodgers are 7-3 in their last 10 during game three of a series.
