    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- At one point. Dallas/Giants were both 18-1 to win the Super Bowl; after Wednesday’s festivities, Cowboys are now 16-1, G-Men 22-1.

-- LVH Superbook’s handicapping contest topped the 667 entrant mark at $1,500 a pop this week, making the purse over $1M and first place over $400,000.

-- This week Colorado Rockies became first team in 25 years (’87 Royals) to lose consecutive games without allowing an earned run in either game. -- Over the last five years, Miami Dolphins are 25-12 vs spread on road, 12-27 at home.

-- San Jose State students can not only get into football games for free, but if they show their college ID they can bring a friend in for free too, not that the Spartans are hurting for fans or anything.

-- ESPN turned 33 years old Friday; I remember being in college and reading an article about an all-sports TV station and saying “That’s a really good idea!!!” Turns out it was.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.........

    13) Back when the ABA folded in 1976, and the NBA absorbed four of its teams (Nets-Pacers-Spurs-Nuggets), the owners of the Spirits of St Louis were paid 14% of an NBA team’s annual TV deal (every year, forever) to go away.

Now this was three years before the Magic/Bird rivalry propelled the NBA to new heights, which jacked up TV payouts. 36 years later, those owners are still cashing checks, which are now estimated at a total of $255M.

Why doesn't anyone ever pay me to go away?

    12) Radio announcer for those Spirits was a young Syracuse grad named Bob Costas. He wasn't quite as pompous then as he is now.

    11) Big X Conference teams (Texas-Baylor-West Virginia, etc) signed off on a 13-year, $2.6B media deal this week. Now we know why TCU kept jumping leagues, to land in a spot like this.

    10) All 14 of ESPN’s “experts” picked the Giants to beat Dallas? Cowboys were a 3.5-point dog; no one had onions to pick them? Surprising.

    9) TV analysts are predicting that $2.8B will be spent on political TV commercials during this election season, up from $2.1B in 2008.

Luckily for me, I don’t live in a battleground state, so I’ll be spared a lot of the hideousness, not that I watch commercials anyway.

    8) I’m having trouble trying to figure out what the Colorado Rockies are trying to do with a 75-pitch limit for its starting pitchers. You have to pitch five innings to qualify for a win; who is going to want to pitch in high altitude Coors Field if they’re not going to be allowed to get many wins?

Who wants to pitch there anyway? Their strategy is baffling, then again, so was firing Clint Hurdle, who led them to their only World Series appearance.

    7) Average non-premium ticket to a Jets’ game costs $117.94, the highest figure in the NFL. Why wouldn’t Jet/Giant tickets cost the same?

    6) Celtics’ guard Rajan Rondo is working as an intern at GQ magazine during Fashion Week. Just thought you’d like to know.

    5) Pitt Panthers have had four football coaches in the last three years; did any of them recruit? Panthers looked pathetic Thursday night, and that’s with a veteran QB.

    4) Yahoo!’s Pat Forde, one of my favorite writers, reports that last time Penn State/Pitt both lost their season opener was in 1972.

    3) This has been a thrilling baseball season for me, with the A’s unexpected contention, but now things have turned a little dark.

Our best pitcher has a fractured skull and is still in intensive care, our #2 pitcher was suspended for drugs, leaving us to go down the stretch with a pitching rotation of four rookies and a guy coming off of Tommy John surgery. Seems like a 3-week death march, with 17 of the next 20 games on the road, but just getting to his point has been an accomplishment, so you never know.

First and foremost, my prayers are with Brandon McCarthy, so that he makes a full and quick recovery from his head injury.

    2) Line on Bills-Jets game dropped from 6 to 3; someone told me because the Jets had an 0-4 preseason. Well, Oscar, so did the Bills. Hello???? What am I missing here?

    1) I’m sure NFL will have a moment of silence for Art Modell before its games this weekend; they should probably not have one in Cleveland, where Modell is still hated for taking the Browns to Baltimore. His passing would probably be cheered by Lake Erie. xxxxx

    Saturday's 2nd of 13: NFL props for 2012............

    13) Over/under on Peyton Manning’s TD passes: 30.

    12) Over/under on Philip Rivers’ passing yardage: 4,250.

    11) Over/under for receiving TD’s by Larry Fitzgerald, 9.

    10) Over/under on Andrew Luck’s passing TD’s: 23.5.

    9) Over/under on receptions by Wes Welker: 105.5.

    8) Over/under on TD passes by this Brady guy on the Patriots: 34.5.

    7) Over/under on games started by Russell Wilson, 10.5.

    6) Over/under on TD passes by Drew Brees, 37.5.

    5) Over/under on receptions by Andre Johnson, 80.5.

    4) Over/under on games Michael Vick starts: 14.

    3) Over/under on TD passes by Cam Newton: 23.5.

    2) Over/under on games Tim Tebow starts at QB: 1.5.

    1) Will Rex Ryan be coach of the Jets in Week 1 of 2013 season?
    Yes: +$150, No: -$200.

NASCAR betting: Ready for a wild ride at Richmond

With so much on the line, Saturday night’s Federated Auto Parts 400 Richmond International Raceway could be the wildest race of the season to date. This marks the final event in NASCAR’s regular season and finalizes the field for the 10-race 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup.

While the top of the field is locked in, there are still three spots up for grabs and 10 drivers who can mathematically contest for them.

Chief among those on the outside looking in is Kyle Busch. Currently Kasey Kahne holds the provisional wildcard spot with Busch looking to knock him off that bubble. Given the history of Joe Gibbs Racing here at Richmond, Busch has a great chance of doing just that Saturday night.

Kyle won here in the spring and was sixth in this race last season. Overall, he has four wins here - three of those coming in the last five Richmond races.

“We were in this situation in 2009 and we had to go to Richmond and finish five spots ahead of Brian Vickers and we finished fifth, which was great,” Busch told the media. “But Brian Vickers finished eighth, so we missed the Chase that night. Not necessarily one that you bank on going there and getting a win or anything like that. You feel like you can run well, but you can’t guarantee it, either.

"Again, you just do what you’ve got – do what you need to do to run as well as you can. There are definitely never any guarantees you’re going to show up to the racetrack and win. You’ve just got to work hard, communicate with your crew chief the best you can and not get too frustrated when things aren’t exactly correct. But, yet, be determined enough that you can get them fixed and get out there and make the most of your opportunities.”

Of the remaining hopefuls, Jeff Gordon could be the toughest. He was third in this race last season but finished outside the top 20 in two of the last four including a 23rd place finish here in the spring. However with the experience that Gordon carries in here and his raw determination to race his way into the Chase, Gordon could be one to watch Saturday night.

"We're going with guns loaded ready to do battle," said Gordon. "This race is always intense and I expect it to be a pretty crazy night.

"It's a little bit different because it's a short track (compared to last week's race on the 1.54-mile Atlanta track). I think everybody expects there to be a little more pushing and shoving on the short track. I've been saying all along that I think it's going to come down to the last lap at Richmond - and we're going to fight all the way down to that last lap.

"Our focus won't be on what 'this team' is doing or what 'this driver' is doing. We're just going to focus on our own program like we always do. We'll focus on tuning the car, communicating and working the setup the best we possibly can to try to have the fastest race car.

"I'm not going into the race thinking that we've got to finish 12 positions ahead of Kyle. I'm thinking we have to win."

Even Busch has his eye on Gordon factoring him in when Busch was asked about his confidence of making the Chase.

“I feel OK. I’m not saying I’m for sure going to be in at all,” he said. “Anything can happen. Jeff (Gordon) is no slouch at Richmond, either. He will be fine. I feel like he’s the guy we’re racing – the 24 car. We’ll just have to see how it all plays out. Jeff could give us a run for our money.”

Although a Ford hasn’t won here since 2005, one driver needing a win to make the Chase is Carl Edwards. He’s had a miserable string of bad luck, but still has a shot of making the Chase. Out of the three cars in the Roush-Fenway Racing stable, Edwards has the best Richmond record. With his teammates already secured in the Chase, Edwards desperately wants to join the party. He was second in this race last season and in the spring he led 206 laps before a late race penalty took him from contention and left him in 10th. He has never won here, but that could change Saturday night.

“We’re going to Richmond to win,” Edwards said. “We need some luck and we need it to be good luck. We’ve passed more cars in the last month than we’ve passed all year. I wouldn’t go to Richmond with any other team, in any other car. I feel like the No.99 Ford is the favorite there because of how we ran in the spring and we’re settling for nothing less than victory lane.”

Tony Stewart is looking to make a strong statement. While he is assured of at least a Wild Card spot, he needs to be seeded in the top 10 in the Chase to get the bonus points for his three wins this season. Stewart hasn’t won here since 2002 but finished third in the spring and in the top ten the two races prior. He could easily steal the spotlight Saturday night.

“It is my favorite track,” Stewart said. “It’s not one of them; it’s the favorite track of mine on the circuit. It seems like we have to race ourselves and race the racetrack versus racing each other a lot of times. You do have to race each other, obviously, but there are a lot of times during the race when you have the flexibility to move around on the racetrack and try to find a spot your car likes better than somewhere else. A lot of times on a short track you don’t have the flexibility. You’re more narrowed down with what groove you’re going to be in.”

Bottom Line: 63 of 112 races have been won from the top five starting positions, including 22 from the pole. The last driver to win from the pole was Kyle Busch on May 1, 2010. The furthest back in the field a race winner has started was 31st, by Clint Bowyer in the 2008 spring race

        CFL
        Armadillo's Write-Up

        Week 11

Home (18-18). Favorites (14-22), Over (18-18). West 11-7 vs East.

Same four matchups this weekend as last, just different home fields.........

Hamilton (3-6) @ Toronto (5-4)-- Argonauts (+3.5) won 33-30 at Hamilton last week, avenging 36-27 loss from earlier in year; it was fifth game in a row Hamilton allowed 20+ points in second half, outscored 95-41 in last four, all losses. TiCats are 1-3 on road, 2-1 as road dogs, losing by 3-7-12 points. Underdogs covered three of four Toronto home games, with Argos losing last two; they're 5-1 when scoring 20+ points, 0-3 when they score less. Five of last six Toronto games stayed under total; seven of nine Hamilton games went over.

Montreal (6-3) @ BCLions (6-3)-- Alouettes snapped BC's four-game win streak with 30-25 win last week, despite gaining only 383 yards, their lowest output in last six games. Montreal won its last four games- they're 6-0 when they scored 30+ points, 0-3 when they don't. Lions won three of four home games, allowing average of 21 ppg in its home games. Alouettes won last two away games, at Winnipeg and Edmonton, after losing their first two. Six of last eight Montreal games went over total; six of Lions' last seven games went under.

Saslatchewan (4-5) @ Winnipeg (2-7)-- Coaching chamge didn't exactly help in last week's 52-0 loss in Regina; Riders outrushed them 175-46, outgained them 441-142 and had three takeaways (+3), but win snapped 5-game Saskatchewan skid, so not like Riders are having smooth sailing either. Bombers are 3-7 vs spread this season but respectable 2-2 at home, with losses by 10-3 points. Winnipeg was outscored 69-10 in first half of their last four games. Four of last six Roughrider games, three of last four Winnipeg games went over the total.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

        SATURDAY

        Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Toronto Argonauts (-2.5, 52.5)

Hamilton (3-6) held a 22-11 lead over Toronto heading into the fourth quarter Monday, but the wheels fell off and the Argonauts pulled out a 33-30 victory to hand the Ticats a fourth straight loss. Chris Williams set a CFL record with his sixth kick-return TD of the season in a losing cause.

Quarterback Ricky Ray threw for 375 yards and Chad Owens racked up 402 all-purpose yards in the Argonauts’ comeback effort. Owens finished with 11 catches for 176 yards and was a beast on special teams for the Argos, who improved to 5-4 on the campaign.

        TRENDS AND NOTES

*Toronto is 5-12 ATS in their last 17 home games.
*Under is 20-6 in the last 26 meetings in Toronto.
*Tiger-Cats are 4-0 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
*Hamilton pivot Henry Burris has thrown 22 INTs and only 20 TDs in his last 17 games versus Toronto.

        Montreal Alouettes at B.C. Lions (-4.5, 51.5)

The Montreal Alouettes (6-3) pulled out a 30-25 victory over the Lions to sit alone atop the East standings. Quarterback Anthony Calvillo set a new CFL record with his eighth straight 300-yard passing performance to snap the Lions’ four-game winning streak.

The Leos (6-3) are still top dogs in the West despite last week’s loss and get a shot at redemption on home turf. Travis Lulay threw for 275 yards and a couple of TDs that found the paws of Arland Bruce, who hauled in a season-high six passes for 76 yards in the loss.

        TRENDS AND NOTES

*Under is 8-2 in the last 10 meetings in BC.
*Alouettes are 1-6 ATS in their last seven meetings in BC.
*Under is 6-0 in Lions last six games following a S.U. loss.
*Alouettes are 0-4 ATS in their last four Saturday games.
*The Als have taken two of the last three meetings with British Columbia and four of the last six overall.

        SUNDAY

Saskatchewan Roughriders at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (3.5, 49.5)

The Roughriders (4-5) snapped a five-game losing streak with a 52-0 spanking of the Blue Bombers last week. The Riders will certainly have momentum on their side for this week's rematch after posting the largest shutout in team history. Kory Sheets ran for a season-best 106 yards, becoming the first Saskatchewan rusher to hit the 100-yard mark in a game since 2010.

Joey Elliott and Alex Brink combined for 96 yards passing and an interception in the lopsided loss. Winnipeg QBs rank last in the league in passing accuracy at 57 percent and second-to-last in total passing yards (2,321). The Bombers' offense is averaging a league-low 19.6 points per game, a huge reason why they're the bottom dwellers in the CFL standings.

        TRENDS AND NOTES

*Roughriders are 6-0 ATS in their last six games following a S.U. win.
*Saskatchewan is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall.
*Blue Bombers are 4-1 ATS in their last five home games.
*Saskatchewan has won three straight over Winnipeg and eight of the last nine.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves (7-1, 1.56 ERA)

The Braves' starter has won five in a row and is 6-0 in his last seven starts going back to July 31. Medlen hasn’t allowed an earned run in his last 33 innings of work including two complete games. He has 34 strikeouts in that span.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (14-6, 3.04 ERA)

Hamels hasn’t tasted defeat since August 2, going 3-0 in his last five starts. He’s had to settled for back-to-back no-decisions in his last two outings but has allowed only nine total earned runs in that five-game span. The southpaw is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA lifetime versus the Rockies.

                  Slumping

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-10, 3.63 ERA)

Capuano is flirting with a .500 record heading into the weekend. The Dodgers' lefty has lost six of his last 10 starts and has just two wins to show for in that span. He’s gone 0-2 in his last three, boasting a bulky 8.44 ERA in those outings.

Zach McAllister, Cleveland Indians (5-6, 4.26 ERA)

Indians pitchers have been mainstays in the “Slumping” section since the All-Star break and McAllister is no exception. The Tribe’s right-hander is winless in his last four trips to the bump including back-to-back losses heading into the weekend. Add to that a dismal record versus the Twins – Saturday’s opponent. He’s 0-1 with an ERA north of 10.00 versus Minnesota this season
