College football odds: Week 2 opening line report

A win over Ohio this past Saturday would have been step No. 1 in Penn State’s long road to recovery from near death following the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

The Nittany Lions, who had dropped to 5.5-point favorites from -7 versus the Bobcats, were expected to play with purpose and emotion in their season opener at Beaver Stadium. The program had immeasurable pressure upon itself and, instead of lifting the State College community, crumbled in a 24-14 loss.

That upset at home and the ever-present cloud of the scandal has made Penn State early fade bait for Week 2’s road trip to Virginia.

The Sports Club, a Las Vegas-based oddsmaking service, released PSU +7 for Saturday’s game in Charlottesville. Online books opened the Nittany Lions at +8.5, padding the spread for the expected flood of early money on the Cavaliers. And the public, as predicted, has run the line all the way to PSU +10 as of Monday morning, stopping on a dime at the key number.

Here’s a look at the opening lines and early reaction for some of Week 2’s biggest games:

Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies (-2.5)

The Aggies make their SEC debut against one of the gatekeeper programs of the conference. The Sports Club opened Texas A&M as a 2-point favorite versus Florida in College Station, which will serve as the site for ESPN’s College Game Day broadcast Saturday. Books have tagged a half-point hook on that spread as of Monday morning.

The Gators are coming off an unimpressive Week-1 effort versus Bowling Green, winning 27-14 and failing to cover as 28-point favorites. Florida head coach Will Muschamp is still undecided on his starting quarterback for Week 2 – a decision that could bump the line before kickoff.

Wisconsin Badgers at Oregon State Beavers (+7.5)

Another poor performance from a Big Ten team has forced bookmakers to trim the spread when the Beavers host the Badgers in Week 2. Wisconsin was nearly knocked off by FCS Northern Iowa last weekend, escaping with a 26-21 win and falling very short of the 32.5-point spread.

The Sports Club sent out a suggested line of Badgers -11 in the always-tricky Reser Stadium but sportsbooks posted an opening line of OSU +7.5, where it has remained steady. Oregon State, which had its Week 1 opener versus Nicholls State postponed due to Hurricane Isaac, has had two full weeks to prepare for Wisconsin, which blasted the Beavers 35-0 in Madison last year.

Georgia Bulldogs at Missouri Tigers (+3.5)

Missouri is another program making its SEC debut in Week 2. The Tigers stretched their legs with a 62-10 win over Southeastern Louisiana in Week 1 but now get their first test in the form of the Bulldogs. Georgia wasn’t sharp versus Buffalo in Week 1, coming away with a 45-23 victory as a failed 38-point favorite.

The Sports Club sent out UGA -6 as their suggested spread but books weren’t too impressed with the Bulldogs’ opening effort and cut the line to -3.5. Georgia head coach Mark Richt has tagged this matchup as a “monster game” and has been preparing for the Tigers all offseason. The line is currently staying put at Mizzou +3.5 as of Monday morning

Football lines that make you go hmmm...

If the Week 2 college football schedule wasn’t already littered enough with puzzling pointspreads, football fans get their first taste of NFL action and a few more head scratchers.

Each week, we take a quick glance at the football odds making bettors go “hmmmm…”, whether it be the opening lines, early action or mid-week adjustments:

        NCAAF

UCF Knights at Ohio State Buckeyes (-17.5, 50.5)

This Week 2 matchup pits two programs under NCAA lock and key. Both UCF and OSU are suffering through bowl bans for underhanded dealings but, despite the lack of a postseason prize, it would appear that keeping up appearances is more important to the Buckeyes and new head coach Urban Meyer.

This spread opened as low as -17 OSU online and is sitting as high as -18 at the LVH in Las Vegas. The Knights are a quality C-USA squad, but last week’s one-sided win over Akron was more the Zips’ fault than anything – three fumbles, two inside their own 10-yard line.

Duke Blue Devils at Stanford Cardinal (-14, 58.5)

This battle of brains may be the Super Bowl of the debate team calendar but the ACC-vs. Pac-12 football contest is the “Late Night Degenerate Special” in Week 2, with a 10:30 p.m. ET kickoff. The Cardinal escaped with a “W” and little else versus San Jose State last Friday, but is still an elite program and will tighten the bolts following the Week 1 scare.

The Blue Devils were impressive – for Duke standards – in a blowout win over FIU. However, they did allow Golden Panthers RB Kedrick Rhodes to rumble for 130 yards and a score and now face Stanford RB Stepfan Taylor. Duke was second last in rushing defense in the ACC last year, giving up 180.67 yards per game on the ground.

        NFL

San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers (-5.5, 45)

The Niners were the sexy offseason pick to win the Super Bowl this summer, marching all the way to the top of the futures board at some Las Vegas books. So why would San Francisco be a 5.5-point pup in Green Bay for Week 1?

Sure, the Packers are still the Packers and Lambeau is Lambeau. But, in a battle of Super Bowl faves, wouldn’t you expect a tighter spread than touchdown books were giving the 49ers when this game opened back in the spring? This line has come down from that opening but still seems a little hefty, which is why some markets are dealing Green Bay -5 at plus money.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos (-1, 44.5)

Depending on where you wager, this spread has been up and down more than Prince Harry’s pants during a Vegas bender. At certain Nevada books, the line moved all the way to Steelers -1 before going back to Denver -2.5. Some online books have it tagged as a pick’em.

Pittsburgh is missing some key cogs on defense and despite this being a “revenge” game following last year’s postseason shocker, the Broncos are very much a different team with Peyton Manning calling the shots at the line. Denver has moved up the futures board in a hurry this offseason but it appears that respect isn’t translating to Week 1’s odds.

                Week 2

                Thursday's game
Underdogs covered four of last five Pitt-Cincinnati games, with visitor winning four of the five; Pitt won two of last three visits here, but they lost 31-17 last week to I-AA Youngstown State, giving up 204 rushing yards, not a good start to the Paul Chryst era. Pitt covered 14 of its last 17 games coming off a loss. Since 2007, Pitt is 10-1-2 vs spread as a road underdog. Cincinnati is 7-10 as a home favorite last three years; this is its season opener. Bearcats lost 3 starters on OL, have a mobile QB who has played some WR. Pitt has a senior QB who has made 27 starts for three different head coaches. Panthers have 9 starters back on offense, 5 on defense; Cincy has only 4 back on offense, but 7 on defense.

                Friday's game
Utah State lost its last 12 games to Utah, with road team covered five in a row in series; Utes won their last six visits to Logan, winning last three by combined score of 154-16. Utah has a junior QB with 20 career starts and three starters back on OL (9 back on offense, 7 on defense)- they've got rivalry game with BYU on deck next week. Utes are 12-10 as away favorites since 2006. Aggies have 6 starters back on both sides of ball; they're 2-3 as home dogs under Anderson. Both teams had ridiculously easy tuneup wins over I-AA clubs last week.

Pittsburgh at Cincinnati: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Panthers at Cincinnati Bearcats (-4, 48.5)

Pittsburgh won’t have much time to recover from a season-opening 31-17 loss to Youngstown State and that may be a good thing. The Panthers dive right into the Big East schedule at Cincinnati on Thursday.

Pittsburgh will no doubt come in angry and will face a new-look Cincinnati team playing its first game. The Bearcats are replacing their quarterback, top running back and two first-team, all-Big East players on defense.

However, Cincinnati is a contender. Munchie Legaux takes over at quarterback with some experience and has talented receivers. The Bearcats also have seven starters back on defense.

Pittsburgh, which is 8-3 overall and 3-1 at Cincinnati, has to be heartened by the return of running back Ray Graham from knee surgery. Still, the Panthers' inexperienced defense must improve quickly for first-year coach Paul Chryst.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN. LINE: Cincinnati -4

WEATHER: There is a chance of thunderstorms for the start of Thursday's game. The forecast in Cincinnati is calling for a 20 percent chance of rain with winds blowing west at 5 mph, giving way to partially cloudy skies and temperatures in the low 70s.

PITTSBURGH (0-1, 0-0 Big East): The Panthers did not play well on either side of the ball against Youngstown. Their defense, with eight new starters, had its streak of 25 games with at least one sack snapped and Youngstown converted 11 of 16 third-down opportunities. Chryst suspended six players for disciplinary reasons before the opener, including starting defensive tackle Tyrone Ezell, but few stepped up. Graham, who led the league in rushing before getting injured in the eighth game last year, returned to average more than five yards per carry. Quarterback Tino Sunseri will make his 28th straight start after throwing for 239 yards Saturday.

CINCINNATI (2011: 10-3, 5-2 Big East): The Bearcats have plenty of practice time this month, with only two games until a Sept. 29 clash with Virginia Tech. That should help them focus on the only Big East game until Oct. 26. Legaux was impressive in three starts last season, going 2-1, and has veteran receivers Kenbrell Thompkins and Anthony McClung among his options. The pair combined for more than 90 receptions and 1,200 yards in 2011. Senior George Winn and promising sophomore Jameel Poteat will replace running back Isaiah Pead. All-Big East safety Drew Frey leads the defense for coach Butch Jones.

                  TRENDS
                  * Panthers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven meetings.
                  * Under is 5-1 in Panthers’ last six road games.
                  * Bearcats are 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
                  * Home team is 4-1 ATS in their last five meetings.

                  EXTRA POINTS

                  1. Cincinnati has won at least 10 games in four of the last five years and at least tied for the league title three of last four.

                  2. Pittsburgh has won its last four Big East openers, and five of its last six.

                  3. Cincinnati’s Pat O’Donnell led the Big East in punting last season.

Utah at Utah State: What bettors need to know
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Utes at Utah State Aggies (+7.5, 52.5)

It has been nearly four years since Utah paid a visit to non-conference rival Utah State. That streak will end Friday when the team’s square off at Romney Stadium, but it may also be the final chapter of the lopsided rivalry - at least in Logan.

The unfortunate thing about the nation's ninth-longest rivalry slowly dissolving is that the Aggies, who have lost 12 straight in the series by an average of 24.1 points, are as well-equipped to compete with the Utes as they have been in quite some time. They made their first bowl appearance since 1997 last season and opened 2011 with a 34-3 win over Southern Utah.

Utah, meanwhile, is formidable as usually and is coming off its first shutout in five years – a 41-0 blanking of Northern Colorado. This is the first meeting in Logan since the Utes blasted the Aggies 58-10 in 2008. Utah also cruised to a 35-17 home victory in the most recent meeting in 2009.

                    TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

LINE: Oddsmakers opened Utah as a 7-point road favorite which climbed to -8 before buyback on the home side brought the spread to -7.5. The total opened at 53 and climbed as high as 54 before dropping to 52.5 points.

WEATHER: The forecast for Logan calls for clear skies and temperatures will drop from the 80s to the mid-60s later in the night. Winds will blow north at 6 mph.

ABOUT UTAH (1-0): The Utes flashed a dominating defense and a ball-control offense in their opener, albeit against an overmatched Northern Colorado team. Utah’s defense, anchored by sure-fire first-round pick in defensive tackle Star Lotulelei, held the Bears to 114 total yards. Meanwhile, senior running back John White (24 carries, 119 yards, touchdown) paced an offense that set an Rice-Eccles stadium record with a 21-play, 91-yard drive, which took 10:42 off the clock. Elsewhere, fourth-year junior quarterback Jordan Wynn (he was granted a medical hardship) appears healthy after undergoing two shoulder injuries in a 10-month period. He finished 19-of-27 for 200 yards with two TDs and an interception. Both touchdown passes went to emerging sophomore tight end Jake Murphy, the son of baseball Hall of Famer Dale Murphy.

ABOUT UTAH STATE (1-0): The Aggies, a popular pick to win the Western Athletic Conference in their final season in the league (they’re headed to the Mountain West Conference in 2013), racked up 581 yards of offense against Southern Utah. Sophomore Joe Hill ran for 116 yards and three scores and fellow sophomore Chuckie Keeton passed for 304 yard and two touchdowns. Keeton regained the starting job this spring after an injury forced him to miss the final five games of last season. Keeton showed his potential when he nearly led the Aggies to a season-opening upset of Auburn in 2011.

                    TRENDS:

                    * Over is 3-0-1 in their last four meetings.
                    * Utes are 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings in Utah State.
                    * Road team is 5-0-1 ATS in their last six meetings.
                    * Aggies are 1-7 ATS in their last eight games following a S.U. win.

                    EXTRA POINTS:

                    1. Utah first-year offensive coordinator Brian Johnson was the Utes' quarterback in the most recent meeting in Logan. He was 22-of-31 for 204 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

                    2. Utah has won 20 of the last 22 meetings and leads the overall series 77-28-4.

                    3. The Utes bought their way out of the 2014 matchup in Logan for $500,000, and the only other two remaining contests are slated for Salt Lake City (2013, 2015).

The Wildcats are 4-0 at home and 10-3 overall under coach Bill Snyder against unranked BCS conference teams. However, the Wildcats are 9-21 ATS in their last 30 non-conference games.

East Carolina Pirates at South Carolina Gamecocks (-21.5)

The Gamecocks have won five straight games overall and 12 straight regular-season games against non-conference opponents, dating to 2008. The Pirates have lost seven of their last eight non-conference road games. The road team is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.

Ball State Cardinals at Clemson Tigers (-26.5, 65.5)

The Tigers are without star wide receiver Sammy Watkins for one more week following his two-game suspension. The over is 7-3 in Tigers' last 10 home games.

Purdue Boilermakers at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-14, 52)

The Irish have played Purdue 83 times since 1896, which is more all-time meetings for Notre Dame than any other Big Ten opponent. Notre Dame leads the series 55-26-2. The underdog is 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings.

Air Force Falcons at Michigan Wolverines (-21.5, 62)

Air Force has lost 19 consecutive games against ranked opponents. The Falcons are 0-5 ATS in their last five games in September.

USC Trojans at Syracuse Orange (+26, 59)

Barkley threw for five TDs - at the time a school record - with zero interceptions and 324 yards in a 38-17 win over Syracuse last season. The over is 5-1 in Trojans' last six neutral site games and is 6-0 in the Orange's last six non-conference games.

Michigan State Spartans at Central Michigan Chippewas (+20.5, 48)

This will be Michigan State's 50th game against a current member of the Mid-American Conference. The Spartans are 40-7-2, with three of those losses coming to CMU. The Chippewas are 5-1 ATS in their last six vs. Big Ten.

Western Kentucky Hilltoppers at Alabama Crimson Tide (-40, 54)

The Hilltoppers, in their fourth season of FBS membership, have won eight of nine overall dating back to last year, but haven't defeated a current member of the FBS outside the Sun Belt Conference. The Crimson Tide are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 non-conference games.

Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies (-1.5, 51)

The all-time series is tied 1-1, Florida winning at home in 1962 and the Aggies claiming a Sun Bowl victory in 1977. Florida is 1-7-2 all-time in games played in Texas. The Gators are 0-6 ATS in their last six conference games.

Wisconsin Badgers at Oregon State Beavers (+6.5, 52.5)

The Badgers have won their last 11 regular-season road non-conference games dating back to a 31-28 loss to Oregon in 2001 but is 0-5 ATS in its last five road games overall.

Fresno State Bulldogs at Oregon Ducks (-35, 75)

The Bulldogs have lost their last three games against ranked programs by a combined 150-36. The Over is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these teams.

Arkansas Razorbacks at UL Monroe Warhawks (+30.5, 60)

Arkansas leads the all-time series 9-0, but needed a late fourth-down conversion, a touchdown and a missed Warhawks' field goal to escape with a 28-27 win in 2008. The Razorbacks are 1-4 ATS in their last five meetings.

Washington Huskies at LSU Tigers (-23.5, 53)

LSU has won both meetings with Washington, including 31-23 at Seattle in the 2009 season opener. The Huskies are 0-4 ATS in their last four road games.

Nebraska Cornhuskers at UCLA Bruins (+5.5, 60)

Nebraska could have a big hole to fill on offense Saturday afternoon if senior running back Rex Burkhead is unable to play. Burkhead, who rushed for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns, suffered a sprained left knee Saturday in a 49-20 victory against Southern Mississippi and his availability was listed as questionable earlier this week.

Georgia Bulldogs at Missouri Tigers (+2, 54)

The Bulldogs could have trouble containing Tigers dual-threat QB James Franklin after Georgia allowed Buffalo’s signal-caller to run for 89 yards on 14 carries. The Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.

New Mexico Lobos at Texas Longhorns (-38, 52.5)

Florida at Texas A&M: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies (+1, 49.5)

After its season opener was postponed by Hurricane Isaac, Texas A&M finally gets underway Saturday at what is sure to be an electric Kyle Field. The Aggies make their long-awaited move to the Southeastern Conference by hosting No. 23 Florida.

Texas A&M has a new coach in Kevin Sumlin, a redshirt freshman quarterback in Johnny Manziel and one of the most daunting schedules possible. But excitement is at an all-time high.

The Gators weren’t overly impressive in their season-opening 27-14 victory over Bowling Green, but they did get clarity at quarterback when Jeff Driskel won the starting job over Jacoby Brissett.

                            TV: 3:30 p.m. ET, CBS.

LINE: Texas A&M opened as high as -2.5 for its SEC debut but money on the Gators has flipped the spread, currently sitting with the Aggies as +1 home underdogs.

WEATHER: The forecast for Kyle Field is calling for winds reaching speeds of up to 18 mph, blowing NNE. Temperatures will be in a mid 80s with a 20 percent chance of rain.

ABOUT FLORIDA (1-0, 0-0 SEC): Coach Will Muschamp picked Driskel largely because of his mobility and knack for extending plays. He went 10-of-16 for 114 yards against the Falcons, including a 50-yard scoring strike to Frankie Hammond Jr. that stretched Florida’s lead to 10 in the fourth quarter. Running back Mike Gillislee ran for 148 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries, giving Florida the power-running identity it had lacked. The Gators have one of the best linebacking corps in the SEC and cornerback Marcus Roberson is a ballhawk who made a key interception against Bowling Green.

ABOUT TEXAS A&M (0-0, 0-0 SEC): Manziel will be the first Aggies freshman to start a season opener. As he tries to run Sumlin’s up-tempo offense, he’ll have the luxury of leaning on a running game led by Christine Michael. The senior was on pace for a 1,200-yard season last year until tearing up his knee, but is fully healthy now. Freshman running back Trey Williams wowed observers throughout fall camp. All-American left tackle Luke Joeckel anchors a strong offensive line that should clear holes and give Manziel time to find wide receiver Ryan Swope (180 career catches). Defensive end Damontre Moore (17.5 tackles for loss last year) leads a unit replacing five starters.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Gators are 0-6 ATS in their last six conference games.
                            * Aggies are 3-9 ATS in their last 12 games overall.
                            * Under is 4-0 in Gators' last four road games.
                            * Over is 15-6-1 in Aggies' last 22 games in September.

                            EXTRA POINTS:

                            1. The all-time series is tied 1-1, Florida winning at home in 1962 and the Aggies claiming a Sun Bowl victory in 1977. Florida is 1-7-2 all-time in games played in Texas.

                            2. Sumlin’s offense at Houston last season ranked No. 1 nationally in passing yards, total yards and scoring (49.3).

                            3. Florida was picked to finish third in the SEC East, while A&M was selected fifth in the SEC West.

Georgia at Missouri: What bettors need to know
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Georgia Bulldogs at Missouri Tigers (+2, 54)

Missouri’s much-anticipated Southeastern Conference debut didn’t need any extra juice. But with seventh-ranked Georgia coming to a sold-out Faurot Field on Saturday, Tigers defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson took a swipe at the Bulldogs, calling their style of play “old-man football.”

Georgia didn’t take the bait and get involved in a trash-talking war, and Richardson was promptly banned from talking to the media. But it’s another subplot to this intriguing matchup pitting Mizzou’s high-octane spread attack against Georgia’s traditional pro-style offense. The Bulldogs could have trouble containing Tigers dual-threat QB James Franklin after Georgia allowed Buffalo’s signal-caller to run for 89 yards on 14 carries.

Missouri will be hard-pressed to stop Georgia freshman Todd Gurley, who amassed 227 yards and three touchdowns on 10 touches (100 yards on eight carries, 127 yards on two kickoff returns).

                              TV: 7:45 p.m. ET, ESPN2.

LINE: Missouri opened as high as +3.5 but have been bet down to +2. The total has dropped from 55 to 54 points.

WEATHER: The forecast for Memorial Stadium is calling for a chance of thunderstorms with a 47 percent chance of rain. Temperatures will be in the mid 70s with winds blowing WSW at 6 mph.

ABOUT NO. 7 GEORGIA (1-0, 0-0 SEC): The Bulldogs were picked to repeat as SEC East champions. Quarterback Aaron Murray is a darkhorse Heisman candidate who threw for 258 yards and three scores without an interception in Georgia’s 45-23 victory over Buffalo. The Bulldogs played without three suspended starters - safety Bacarri Rambo, linebacker Alec Ogletree and cornerback Sanders Commings. Commings and outside linebacker Chase Vasser remain suspended for Saturday, with coach Mark Richt yet to clarify the status of Rambo and Ogletree. Wide receiver Marlon Brown (hamstring), cornerback Malcolm Mitchell (ankle) and running back Richard Samuel (hip) all were limited in practice, but expected to play.

ABOUT MISSOURI (1-0, 0-0 SEC): The Tigers’ 62-10 victory over Southeast Louisiana might have been too easy as Missouri led 28-0 after running 12 plays. The Tigers scored on an interception return, a fumble return and two punt returns by Marcus Murphy, the SEC’s Special Teams Player of the Week. Franklin has an array of dangerous targets, including senior wideout T.J. Moe and freshman Dorial-Green Beckham, the nation’s No. 1 recruit. Each caught three balls in the opener. Missouri was picked to finish fourth in the SEC East, behind Georgia, South Carolina and Florida.

                              TRENDS:

                              * Bulldogs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.
                              * Tigers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games in September.
                              * Over is 4-1 in Bulldogs' last five games in September.
                              * Over is 4-1 in Tigers' last five games in September.

                              EXTRA POINTS

                              1. Georgia won the only previous meeting 14-0 in the 1960 Orange Bowl.

                              2. Mizzou RB Kendial Lawrence has run for 492 yards over his last five games.

                              3. Tigers LB Will Ebner (neck) and G Jack Meiners (knee) are listed as questionable.
