    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Jurickson Profar is second-youngest player ever (Whitey Lockman, '45) to homer in his first major league at-bat.

-- Detroit swept the White Sox, teams are now tied atop AL Central.

-- Huge moment in Atlanta, with Chipper Jones hitting a 3-run walkoff as Braves scored five runs in bottom of 9th to stun the Phillies 8-7.

-- Arizona State hired former NBA head coach Eric Musselman as an aide to Herb Sendek. Hopefully it was Sendek's decision and Musselman isn't a head coach-in-waiting if ASU has a rough year.

-- Texas State (+36.5) won 30-13 at Houston, one of biggest pointspread upsets ever; Bobcats are coached by Dennis Franchione, who used to be coach at both Alabama/Texas A&M. He is better as an underdog.

-- Nine series left in the baseball season, 4.5 weeks, roughly 28-30 games. It gets really, really interesting now.......

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Random Lists of 3.............

    13) 3 favorite fast food meals:
    a) Little Anthony’s pizza
    b) Double with ketchup at Wendy’s
    c) Chicken fried rice with orange chicken, at any Chinese take-out place.

    12) 3 guys you never want to see at your house:
Jim Cantore, who follows weather disasters for the Weather Channel and the two guys on American Pickers, who look thru junkyards and people’s attics for old stuff they can sell for a profit. If they’re picking thru your stuff, you live in a hellhole., or you're close to dying.

    11) If I’m down three points with 2:00 left and we’ve got the ball on my 20-yard line, I’d want one of these 3 QB’s leading my team: John Elway-Roger Staubach-Kurt Warner.

    In today’s game, Brady-Brees-Roethlisberger.

    10) 3 best reality shows on TV: American Pickers-Pawn Stars-Tanked.

    9) My 3 favorite hotels in Las Vegas:
    a) Elara-- Old Westgate Towers, behind Planet Hollywood.
    b) South Point-- Good sportsbook, 24-hour bowling alley, Steak 'n Shake.
    c) LVH-- Nice pool, superior sportsbook, good deli in the back.

    8) 3 best basketball players of all-time: Kareem Adbul-Jabbar/Michael Jordan/Magic Johnson (Lebron James will probably replace Magic on this list someday soon).

    7) 3 favorite scenes in a sports movie:
    a) Bob Cousy/Nick Nolte talking in a dimly-lit gym in Blue Chips, while Cousy makes every foul shot he takes. On the first take, too.
    b) Al Pacino’s “Life is a game of inches” speech in Any Given Sunday.
    c) John Henry/Billy Beane talking in a Fenway Park luxury box near end of Moneyball.

    6) 3 favorite non-sports movies:
    a) The Verdict- Paul Newman as a down-on-his-luck lawyer.
    b) Dave- Kevin Kline is a stand-in for the President.
    c) Autumn in New York-- Richard Gere in kind of a sad movie.

    5) 3 favorite places (non-junk food) to eat in Albany:
    Delmonico’s-Graney's-Olive Garden.

    4) 3 favorite places to eat in Las Vegas:
    a) Battista’s (on Flamingo, behind Bill’s Gambling Hall).
    b) Maggiano’s (in Fashion Show ****)
    c) In ‘n Out Burger (best milkshake I’ve ever had).

    3) My 3 favorite hitters to watch at the plate:
    Giancarlo Stanton-Yoenis Cespedes-Adam Dunn.

    2) Two out, bottom of 9th, I’m down a run with bases loaded. 3 guys who I would want at the plate: Albert Pujols-Miguel Cabrera-Adrian Gonzalez.

    1) 3 of the dumbest things in America:
    a) The designated hitter
    b) Electing our President by using the Electoral College instead of popular vote
    c) Boise State and San Diego State being members of the Big East and Big West at the same time, in different sports.

      Week 10

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: This weekend's CFL preview
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three regional rivalries are set for Sunday and Monday in the CFL. Here’s a few tidbits on the three matchups:

      Monday

      Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-3.5, 53.5)

Toronto is coming off a disappointing 27-17 home loss to Edmonton. The Argonauts (4-4) continue to struggle with Ricky Ray under center and are having a tough time putting points up on the board (2-6-0 O/U) this season.

Hamilton dropped a close 31-29 decision to Montreal last week and has lost three straight. The Tiger-Cats (3-5) have the top offense in the CFL, scoring an average of 29.5 points per game (6-2-0 O/U).

      TRENDS AND NOTES

*Argonauts are 1-5 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
*Under is 5-0 in Argonauts last five games overall.
*Tiger-Cats are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a S.U. loss.
*Argos boast the top-ranked pass defense in the league, holding opponents to an average of 233.8 YPG.

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-3.5, 48.5)

Edmonton prevailed 26-17 over Toronto last week. The ground game continues to be the focus for the Eskimos (5-3) with new running back Cory Boyd now in the fold. Edmonton has the league’s worst passing attack at 239.5 YPG.

Calgary is also coming off a win last week, downing the Roughriders, 17-10. The Stampeders (4-4) also love to run the ball with their feature back Jon Cornish. The Calgary passing attack is sputtering with Kevin Glenn at the helm, so expect an old-fashioned ground war.

      TRENDS AND NOTES

*Under is 4-0 in Calgary’s last four games overall.
*Eskimos are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a S.U. win.
*Under is 3-0-1 in Eskimos’ last five road games.

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              STREAKING

Kris Medlen, Atlanta Braves (6-1, 1.71)

Medlen dominated the Padres, tossing eight innings of shutout ball while striking out nine in Tuesday's win. The right-hander has won four straight and hasn’t surrendered a run in his last 28 1/3 innings pitched. His next start is at home against the Rockies.

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds (17-6, 2.48)

Cueto picked up his MLB-leading 17th win against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, giving up just two runs in solid innings. The righty is 8-1 over his last 10 starts with a 2.69 ERA over that span. He toes the rubber at home against the Phillies next.

              SLUMPING

Jason Vargas, Seattle Mariners (13-9, 3.90)

Vargas gave up six runs (five earned) on eight hits in Wednesday's 10-0 loss to Minnesota. The lefty has given up six runs and hasn’t lasted five innings in each of his past two starts. He takes the bump at home against Boston on Monday.

Joe Saunders, Baltimore Orioles (0-1, 10.13)

Saunders was ripped for seven runs in 5 1/3 innings during his Orioles debut Wednesday. The veteran left-hander has been lit up for 21 runs in his last 15 innings pitched and will try to turn things around in Toronto next time out.

Rounding the bases: The best bets in the bigs
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in major league baseball.

                Hot team: Oakland Athletics
                Last week: 7-0
                Season record: 76-57
Upcoming schedule: vs. Angels, at Mariners

Skinny: There’s no team hotter than the Athletics right now. Oakland picked up its ninth straight victory with a 6-2 win over the Red Sox on Sunday and is closing in on Texas for the AL West lead. This is the club's longest winning streak since 10 in a row from June 8-18, 2006, the last year the A's reached the playoffs.

                Cold team: Boston Red Sox
                Last week: 1-6
                Season record: 62-73
Upcoming schedule: at Mariners, vs. Blue Jays

Skinny: The Red Sox have lost six straight to leave them a season-worst 11 games below .500 and on pace to drop 87 games, their highest total since 1992.

                Over team: Washington Nationals
                Last week: 5-1-0
                Season O/U record: 63-62-8
Upcoming schedule: vs. Cubs, vs. Marlins

Skinny: The Nationals put on an offensive display throughout their series with the Cardinals last week, smashing 31 runs in the four-game set, much to the delight of Over bettors.

                Under team: Arizona Diamondbacks
                Last week: 5-1-1
                Season O/U record: 61-66-8
Upcoming schedule: at Giants, at Padres

Skinny: The Diamondbacks had four consecutive low-scoring affairs with the Dodgers that propelled them to a good Under record last week. Arizona pitchers limited L.A. batters to 10 runs during the four-game series.

Monday's betting tips: Rain expected in Blacksburg

                    Weather to watch

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Virginia Tech Hokies: Forecasts are calling for an 80 percent chance of thunderstorms throughout the evening hours at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field.

                    Who’s hot?

Oakland Athletics. There’s no team hotter than the Athletics right now. Oakland picked up its ninth straight victory with a 6-2 win over the Red Sox on Sunday and is closing in on Texas for the AL West lead. This is the club's longest winning streak since 10 in a row from June 8-18, 2006, the last year the A's reached the playoffs.

                    Who’s not?

Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox have lost six straight to leave them a season-worst 11 games below .500 and on pace to drop 87 games, their highest total since 1992.

                    Key stat

Maurice Jones-Drew accounted for 47.7 percent of his team's offense in 2011, the highest percentage of any player in the last 10 years.

                    Game of the day

Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech (-7.5, 48.5)

                    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Rafael Nadal has a partially torn patella tendon in his left knee and will be sidelined for at least the next two months, including Spain's upcoming Davis Cup semifinal against the United States. Doctors originally told the Spaniard he had tendinitis and needed to rest only 15 days.

                    Notable quotable

“It’s worn on me. I was born a winner and going through something like this I never wish upon anyone… It’s tough to hear boos from your own fans. It’s tough to see your teammates — they’re going out there to battle every day — it’s been tough, it’s been stressful, but at the same time you’ve just got to come ready to work.” – Blue Jays starter Ricky Romero after taking his 12th consecutive loss Sunday.

                    Betting news and notes

-The Cubs have the second-worst road record in the majors at 17-48 and have lost four straight and 13 of their past 14 away from Wrigley Field.

-Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto may be activated from the disabled list Monday if he deems himself ready. Votto has been sidelined since July 16 with a knee injury that required surgery.

-Angels Left fielder Mark Trumbo struck out three times Sunday and is hitting .198 with three home runs since Aug. 1.

-The Padres activated right-hander Andrew Cashner from the disabled list Saturday, and are considering making him part of a six-man starting rotation down the stretch.

-The Jacksonville Jaguars will start running back Rashad Jennings in Week 1 against the Vikings even though Maurice Jones-Drew reported to the club Sunday, according to a report on NFL.com.

College football odds: Week 2 opening line report

A win over Ohio this past Saturday would have been step No. 1 in Penn State’s long road to recovery from near death following the Jerry Sandusky scandal.

The Nittany Lions, who had dropped to 5.5-point favorites from -7 versus the Bobcats, were expected to play with purpose and emotion in their season opener at Beaver Stadium. The program had immeasurable pressure upon itself and, instead of lifting the State College community, crumbled in a 24-14 loss.

That upset at home and the ever-present cloud of the scandal has made Penn State early fade bait for Week 2’s road trip to Virginia.

The Sports Club, a Las Vegas-based oddsmaking service, released PSU +7 for Saturday’s game in Charlottesville. Online books opened the Nittany Lions at +8.5, padding the spread for the expected flood of early money on the Cavaliers. And the public, as predicted, has run the line all the way to PSU +10 as of Monday morning, stopping on a dime at the key number.

Here’s a look at the opening lines and early reaction for some of Week 2’s biggest games:

Florida Gators at Texas A&M Aggies (-2.5)

The Aggies make their SEC debut against one of the gatekeeper programs of the conference. The Sports Club opened Texas A&M as a 2-point favorite versus Florida in College Station, which will serve as the site for ESPN’s College Game Day broadcast Saturday. Books have tagged a half-point hook on that spread as of Monday morning.

The Gators are coming off an unimpressive Week-1 effort versus Bowling Green, winning 27-14 and failing to cover as 28-point favorites. Florida head coach Will Muschamp is still undecided on his starting quarterback for Week 2 – a decision that could bump the line before kickoff.

Wisconsin Badgers at Oregon State Beavers (+7.5)

Another poor performance from a Big Ten team has forced bookmakers to trim the spread when the Beavers host the Badgers in Week 2. Wisconsin was nearly knocked off by FCS Northern Iowa last weekend, escaping with a 26-21 win and falling very short of the 32.5-point spread.

The Sports Club sent out a suggested line of Badgers -11 in the always-tricky Reser Stadium but sportsbooks posted an opening line of OSU +7.5, where it has remained steady. Oregon State, which had its Week 1 opener versus Nicholls State postponed due to Hurricane Isaac, has had two full weeks to prepare for Wisconsin, which blasted the Beavers 35-0 in Madison last year.

Georgia Bulldogs at Missouri Tigers (+3.5)

Missouri is another program making its SEC debut in Week 2. The Tigers stretched their legs with a 62-10 win over Southeastern Louisiana in Week 1 but now get their first test in the form of the Bulldogs. Georgia wasn’t sharp versus Buffalo in Week 1, coming away with a 45-23 victory as a failed 38-point favorite.

The Sports Club sent out UGA -6 as their suggested spread but books weren’t too impressed with the Bulldogs’ opening effort and cut the line to -3.5. Georgia head coach Mark Richt has tagged this matchup as a “monster game” and has been preparing for the Tigers all offseason. The line is currently staying put at Mizzou +3.5 as of Monday morning.
