    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- Max Scherzer won his fifth start in row, as Detroit pulled within a game of the White Sox in the AL Central.

-- Cardinals had scored total of one run in losing their last four games, but they pulled out a 10-9 win at Washington Saturday.

-- With Houston trading Ben Francisco to Tampa Bay, it bears noting that Alex Rodriguez makes $10M a year more than the whole Astro team.

-- Oakland A's won their last eight games, winning last five by a combined score of 54-7. Too bad they've lost Brandon Inge for the year.

-- A's have used 17 different rookies this season, 11 of whom are pitchers.

-- Rays won 5-4 in Toronto, second game in row game ended with tying run getting thrown out at home. Big win for the Rays.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday........

    13) Alabama was dominant in waxing Michigan 41-14 at JerryWorld, not the best game for a national TV audience. Just being a mobile QB ain't going to be enough to beat a quality SEC defense. Too much team speed. Denard Robinson is a fine player, but he's a sub-standard passer, and it showed.

    12) Syracuse outgained Northwestern 596-337, but Wildcats ran a punt back for a TD and had a defensive TD in a wild 42-41 win. Northwestern scored winning TD with 0:44 left, on a drive helped greatly by a personal foul on a late hit by the Orange. Very bad loss for Syracuse.

    11) Oklahoma was tied 7-7 at halftime with UTEP, before pulling away for a 24-7 win. Miners tried a fake punt in their own territory when it was 10-7, and that blew up in their face.

    10) West Virginia coach Dana Holgorson has been HC/OC for 80 college games; his teams scored 40+ points in 41 of those 80 games.

    9) Bad starts to season for Pitt/Middle Tennessee/Memphis, which all lost to I-AA teams Saturday. Cruddy way to start your season.

    8) Savannah State got $385,000 to go to Stillwater and get pummeled 84-0 by Oklahoma State; game drew 55,784, so if the average ticket was $20, OSU took in $1,115,680. Next time, schedule a better opponent, or hold the score down. Winning a game 84-0 makes you look like a bully.

    7) Texas-San Antonio won 33-31 at South Alabama, in matchup of couple teams playing their first game in I-AA. Roadrunners got a 51-yard FG with 0:16 left for the dramatic winning points.

    6) Arizona's kicker wasn't as fortunate, missing on 23/25-yard attempts, but his Wildcat teammates beat Toledo 24-17 in OT, making Rich Rodriguez' debut in Tucson a happy, albeit a tense one.

    5) Clemson gave up 70 points in their bowl game LY, so they went out and spent a small fortune on Brent Venables to run their defense. Tigers beat Auburn 26-19, making that money dollars well-spent, at least last night.

    4) Ohio U's Tyler Tettleton was 31-41/324 passing, led three TD drives in second half as the Bobcats rallied from down 14-3 at the half to win 24-14 at Penn State, spoling the coaching debut of Bill O'Brien.

    3) If you took Oregon -36 last night, my condolences; Ducks led 50-10 at halftime, then called off dogs as Arkanas State "rallied" to lose but cover the spread 57-34.

    2) College football has a new rule where if a kid's helmet comes off, he has to sit out the next play; this hurt Northwestern, which had to change its QB on a 3rd-and-5 play with 5:45 left when they led 35-33.

    1) Highlight of the day though, was actor Terry Kiser, age 73, throwing out the first pitch in Oakland last night, as part of the A's Weekend at Bernie's promotion. Kiser played Bernie Lomax in the classic 1989 film, which has become popular in Oakland because of the A's recent success.

      NASCAR betting: AdvoCare 500 preview

Sunday night’s AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway will be an act of desperation for some. Five-hundred miles that could make or break an entire NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

Chief among the desperate is Jeff Gordon. Atlanta marks Gordon’s best chance to add another win to his season total and secure a wildcard spot in this year’s Chase.

Gordon leads all active drivers with five wins at Atlanta. He’s also the defending winner of this race having taken the victory in an event that was rescheduled to Tuesday due to rain last season. Gordon rolls into the weekend 14th in standings with only one victory. He desperately needs to end up in Victory Lane Sunday night to have a chance to make the Chase. Given that the rescheduled event was in daylight last year, Gordon anticipates a different race Sunday.

"I expect the track to be a lot faster at night,” Gordon told reporters. “But I think we will still be able to race high, low and everywhere in between. I think one of the reasons so many drivers and teams love this place is the track has a lot of grip, a lot of banking and it is a very fast race track - especially when looking at the qualifying speeds. It's very fast during the race but it has a lot of fall off, so tire wear is significant and the balance of the car changes throughout a run."

Tony Stewart is barely hanging on to a Chase spot only 11 points ahead of 11th. He was second here last year and won in 2010. Stewart will be looking for redemption after being knocked out early last week at Bristol. With his hold on 10th spot in the standings tenuous at best, Stewart will be another driver desperate for a win and could do so Sunday. To Stewart Atlanta is all about balance.

“When the track cools down at Atlanta, it gains a lot of grip,” Stewart said. “It’s a very temperature-sensitive racetrack. So, the biggest thing is just keeping your balance and keeping up with it as the track cools off. Normally, I can’t say that it changes a bunch balance-wise, it just changes a lot grip-wise. So, just having the car adjustable enough from the start of the race to the end of the race is important.”

The driver just behind Stewart in 11th spot in points could lock up a spot in the Chase by taking over the 10th spot or at least a Wild Card spot with win Sunday night. Kasey Kahne has two victories on the season; a third win could knock Stewart out of 10th and put Kahne into the top seeding for this year’s Chase. He won the pole last year and heads to Atlanta for the first time in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevy.

“Atlanta is my favorite track on the circuit,” Kahne said. “It’s wide and fast, so we can race a lot of different lines. We have a good history here, and I expect a good weekend with a Hendrick Motorsports car under me.”

Jimmie Johnson has three wins here, including a season sweep in 2007. He was second in this race last season and with the strong performances he’s been putting down lately, could easily steal the show Sunday night.

Keep an eye on: Carl Edwards has three wins here and has scored two top five finishes in the last two Atlanta races. Perhaps no one is more desperate for a win than Edwards who’s only chance to make the Chase is to score a win.

"We are headed to Atlanta this weekend knowing what we need to do as a team,” crew chief Chad Norris said. “We are focused and determined, and we refuse to give up on making the Chase. We have two races left and Atlanta has always been a great track for Carl. A win there would put us right in the thick of the battle for the two wild card spots. In the next two weeks we’ve got 725 laps to give it all we have.”

Bottom Line: 14 races have been won from the pole. The last to do so was Kasey Kahne in 2006. The last two races have been won from the fifth position. 60 of the 104 races at Atlanta have been won from the first five starting positions.

Winnipeg (2-6) @ Saskatchewan (3-5)—Bombers fired their coach this week, after 20-17 home loss to BCLions gave them 2-2 mark on 4-game homestand that followed 0-4 road swing to start season. Underdogs covered three of their four home games. Three of four Rider home games stayed under the total.

        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: This weekend's CFL preview
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three regional rivalries are set for Sunday and Monday in the CFL. Here’s a few tidbits on the three matchups:

        Sunday

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-6.5, 49)

Winnipeg’s 20-17 loss to the Lions last week cost head coach Paul LaPolice his job. Now the Bombers (2-6) have to find a way to win in Regina. Winnipeg has dropped its last seven games at Mosaic Stadium.

Saskatchewan is also struggling. The Riders (3-5) are coming off a 17-10 loss to the Stampeders and have dropped five straight games after opening the season with three consecutive victories.

        TRENDS AND NOTES

*Blue Bombers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games overall.
*Roughriders are 0-4 ATS in their last four games overall.
*Under is 7-1 in Roughriders last eight home games.
*Bombers have the worst pass defense (323.2 YPG) in the league.
*Riders boast the second-best running attack (106.8 YPG) in the league.

        Monday

        Toronto Argonauts at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (-3.5, 53.5)

Toronto is coming off a disappointing 27-17 home loss to Edmonton. The Argonauts (4-4) continue to struggle with Ricky Ray under center and are having a tough time putting points up on the board (2-6-0 O/U) this season.

Hamilton dropped a close 31-29 decision to Montreal last week and has lost three straight. The Tiger-Cats (3-5) have the top offense in the CFL, scoring an average of 29.5 points per game (6-2-0 O/U).

        TRENDS AND NOTES

*Argonauts are 1-5 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
*Under is 5-0 in Argonauts last five games overall.
*Tiger-Cats are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a S.U. loss.
*Argos boast the top-ranked pass defense in the league, holding opponents to an average of 233.8 YPG.

Edmonton Eskimos at Calgary Stampeders (-3.5, 48.5)

Edmonton prevailed 26-17 over Toronto last week. The ground game continues to be the focus for the Eskimos (5-3) with new running back Cory Boyd now in the fold. Edmonton has the league’s worst passing attack at 239.5 YPG.

Calgary is also coming off a win last week, downing the Roughriders, 17-10. The Stampeders (4-4) also love to run the ball with their feature back Jon Cornish. The Calgary passing attack is sputtering with Kevin Glenn at the helm, so expect an old-fashioned ground war.

        TRENDS AND NOTES

*Under is 4-0 in Calgary’s last four games overall.
*Eskimos are 1-4 ATS in their last five games following a S.U. win.
*Under is 3-0-1 in Eskimos’ last five road games.

Romero only surrendered two runs on five hits over seven innings, but took the loss in a 2-1 decision against the Yankees on Tuesday night. The lefty has taken the loss in 11 of his last 12 starts and hasn’t picked up a win since June 22. He gets the Rays at Rogers Centre in his next start.

Chris Capuano, Los Angeles Dodgers (11-10, 3.58)

Capuano gave up six earned runs on 10 hits over six innings to the Rockies in his last start. The left-hander continues to struggle, giving up six runs for the second-straight outing. He takes the hill at home against the Diamondbacks on Sunday.

Sunday Night Baseball: White Sox at Tigers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two of the best pitchers in the AL Central are set to do battle on Sunday Night Baseball as the Tigers host the White Sox.

                    WINS FOR SALE

Moving Chris Sale to the rotation has paid major dividends for the White Sox and bettors this season. The lefty is 15-5 with a 2.81 ERA while striking out 155 batters this campaign. However, Sale is 0-2 against Detroit this season. His last start against the Tigers came back on July 21, when he gave up five runs and seven hits in seven innings. Sale has given up four runs or more in four straight road starts and in five of his last seven starts overall. One of Sale's strengths is his ability to get big strikeouts when he needs to; he has five strikeouts or more in seven straight games.

                    ACE STRUGGLES

Justin Verlander is the undisputed Tigers’ ace. He has gone four straight starts with no-decisions despite throwing at least 110 pitches in each contest. The right-hander was rocked by the Royals his last time out, surrendering eight runs and 12 hits in just over five innings. Verlander's only start against Chicago this season was back on July 20, when he gave up two runs and four hits in eight innings. Ironically, that was the last time he picked up a win.

                    INJURY REPORT

The White Sox and Tigers are two of the healthier teams in baseball. Chicago is without Gavin Floyd and John Danks, who are both on the disabled list. Francisco Liriano and Orlando Hudson are also dealing with ailments, but they are both playing through them with Hudson recently coming off the DL. The Tigers continue to deal with the loss of Victor Martinez, who hurt his ACL in the off-season. Other than Martinez, Detroit has a clean bill of health.

                    TRENDS

*White Sox are 12-5 in Sale’s last 17 starts
*Under is 5-1-1 in Chicago’s last seven Sunday games
*Tigers are 28-6 in Verlander’s last 34 Sunday starts
*Tigers are 43-14 in their last 57 Sunday games

                    HITTERS TO WATCH

Miguel Cabrera is 1-for-10 vs. Sale
Prince Fielder is 1-for-7 vs. Sale
Adam Dunn is 3-for-20 vs. Verlander

Capping the calendar: September's best and worst pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Like our waistlines after a tasty Labor Day barbeque, MLB rosters have expanded to accommodate the final month of the season. And as college football and the NFL crash onto the scene, MLB pitchers take the final spotlight in hopes of leading their teams on to the playoff trail.

Which ones can we count on and which ones figure to crash-test dummies? Check it out.

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a two-to-one or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of September. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in September team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each September over the last three years.

                      Good September pitchers

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds • 11-5

The Cincinnati starter had great promise as youngster, but injuries and inconsistencies have often sidetracked him. As per usual, Bailey is like a Moen faucet, running hot or cold and after a brutal August he will try and pitch like September’s past.

Joe Blaton, Los Angeles Dodgers • 10-3

Blanton won his first game in a Dodgers’ uniform in late August, after four miserable outings. Blanton’s “stuff” is not going to fool many batters (179 hits in 161.2 innings), instead he has to work the corners low and induce ground balls with runners on base to stay out of trouble. Despite being largely a No.4 or 5 starter, he’s been clutch when it counted late in the season.

Trevor Cahill, Arizona Diamondbacks • 10-5

The right-hander’s specialty is having batters hit ground balls. In hitter-friendly Chase Field in Arizona, this has not worked out so well for the 24-year-old. Cahill’s home ERA is a lofty 5.33. Where this Diamondbacks pitcher should be a better bet this month is on the road, where his earned run average drops to 2.79.

Matt Cain, San Francisco Giants • 10-3

This San Francisco ace is a proven big-game pitcher and his record this month supports the accolades. With a tight race with the Dodgers presumed in September, Cain is chewing up right-hand hitters who are batting a dismal .188 against him.

Freddy Garcia, New York Yankees • 9-4

The former Seattle Mariners sensation gets by more in guile then skill at 35 years old. Nevertheless, for five or six innings, Garcia will empty his bucket and deliver quality starts when his team needs him the most at crunch time. With a runner on first base, only three times in 17 innings against Garcia has the opponent scored, for a nifty 1.59 ERA in this exact situation.

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals • 12-4

Washington would not be as far out front in the NL East without the excellent pitching of Gonzalez. The left-hander has not been as dominant the last month as we has earlier in the season, yet continues to get the job done. His unusual delivery continues to baffle batters on both sides of the dish, with righty’s sporting a .213 batting average and lefty’s slightly higher at .218.

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies • 12-4

Is Doc Halladay beginning headed towards a decline? We really will not know until next season, but there are signs the 35-year-old Denver native is slowing. After averaging .88 strikeouts per inning over a four-year period from 2008 to 2011, Halladay’s punch-out’s rate is down 10 percent this season. Was it the injury, age or something else? Watch him closely this month.

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies • 10-4

Like the Phillies, it has been a lost season for Lee. He’s been up and down like a Duncan yo-yo and his only three wins have come in his last 10 starts. Lee’s problems are easy to pinpoint. When the lefty has two runners on base, his ERA is almost 15.00. Because Lee’s command has been off, opponents are batting a robust .362 against him when ahead in the count. History says he will throw better in the final month of the season, stay tuned.

Roy Oswalt, Texas Rangers • 10-5

Oswalt is another hurler in his mid-30’s, still trying to hang on with diminishing skills. Oswalt has been forced back into the Texas rotation because of injuries and is unlikely to give more than 5-plus innings because of a balky back. Like several of the veteran pitchers listed above, he knows how to win when needed and can't be discounted just yet.

Rick Porcello, Detroit Tigers • 11-4

If Detroit is going to catch the White Sox or the other American League wild card clubs, having Porcello as a .500 pitcher will not cut it. The slender 6-foot-5 chucker needs a more harmonious two-seam fastball that induces ground balls, not line drives. Time for him to lift his game.

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays • 13-5

One can fully expect this top-shelf left-hander to throw extremely well like he has all season. Even being roughed up a bit in Texas in his previous outing, Price’s ERA is a razor sharp 1.95 in his last 10 starts. At the Trop this season, the Rays ace has 1.66 ERA.

                      C.C. Sabathia, New York Yankees • 11-5

Mr. Consistency among all pitchers in baseball. Sabathia’s record in 71 games over .500 since 2007 (108-37) and his WHIP has hardly varied at all in this time period, ranging from 1.14 to 1.23. Though the Yankees big man strikeouts are down from previous years, his ground ball-to-fly ball ratios are at a career high of 1.44-to-1. Anticipate the big lefty to be on his game like always.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers • 13-5

The Tigers ace will not win another Cy Young, yet he will be a key component if Detroit returns to the postseason. The past suggests Verlander will do his part and though opposing batters have enjoyed more success against him then in 2011; their average is still not much above the Mendoza Line at .212.

Randy Wolf, Milwaukee Brewers • 10-4

Rumors continue to circulate this port-sider will end up in Baltimore for the playoff chase. The Orioles are attempting to look optimistically at Wolf’s past, compared to his 3-10 mark this season. For Wolf to succeed in Baltimore or Milwaukee, he need greater sink on his tosses to right-handed batters, who are slugging a hefty .325 against him.

                      Bad September pitchers

Mat Latos, Cincinnati Reds • 4-8

The trade for Latos has worked marvelously for Cincinnati, who was the first team to 80 wins this season. The big 6-foot-6 right-hander will now be called upon to help the Reds finish with the best record in baseball in the final days of the season. Just in his fourth major league season, Latos has faltered late, however, he’s never played with as talented a group.

Anibal Sanchez, Detroit Tigers • 5-11

After being pounded in his initial starts in MoTown, Sanchez has looked far more comfortable in a Detroit uniform his last couple of starts at the end of August. For the 28-year-old Venezuelan to be at his best, he has to keep the low 90s fastball down in the zone, where it has more movement and tighten up his delivery for the hard slider. Sanchez will fall in love with his secondary pitches, which is what gets him into trouble.

Chad Billingsley, Los Angeles Dodgers • 5-10

Dodgers CEO Stan Kasten said he "fears" that disabled starting pitcher Chad Billingsley could be lost for the season with an elbow injury, according to a Los Angeles Times report. Kasten's comment came less than a week after the club gave reporters a vague description of "elbow inflammation" as the reason for Billingsley's placement on the disabled list on August 25 after he underwent an MRI.

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox • 3-9

The White Sox placed Floyd on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain on August 27. He was previously on the DL from July 8-23, with right elbow tendinitis and his return is to be determined.
