    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- What if Russell Wilson is a better QB than Robert Griffin? Won’t the Redskins look stupid trading three #1 picks to the Rams to draft Griffin, when they could’ve had Wilson in the 3rd round?

-- Cool baseball record I never heard of until this weekend: Most HRs by a teenager? 24, by Tony Conigliaro. Mel Ott is next with 19.

-- Interesting article on ESPN.com about Yoenis Cespedes and the adjustments he’s had to make coming to this country from Cuba (via the Dominican Republic). A’s have fewer Hispanic players than most teams, so translator/former A’s pitcher Ariel Prieto has been a huge help.

-- Pirates’ Pedro Alvarez had 23 RBI in 15 games with St Louis this year; in his other 103 games, he has 47 RBI.

-- Watching the UCLA-Rice game, it seemed odd that they once played a Super Bowl in Rice Stadium. Weren't many people there last night.

-- South Carolina QB Connor Shaw is one tough dude; despite hurting his shoulder, he came back in the game and the Gamecocks escaped Nashville with a 17-13 win over an improved Vanderbilt team.

    ***********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend........

    13) College football takes center stage this weekend; top matchup is probably Michigan-Alabama at Jerry World in Dallas Saturday night.

    12) NC State has a senior QB (Glennon); Tennessee has a quality QB (Bray) and a monkey on its back, as coach Dickey is under pressure for his Vols to have a better season this year, or else. Interesting neutral field opener Friday night.

    11) Kellen Moore went 50-3 as Boise State’s QB, now he’s struggling to adjust to the NFL game with the Lions. Boise is opening at Michigan State, with both sides breaking in new signal callers. Broncos have a recent history of winning as underdogs.

    10) Clemson-Auburn has been a good series last couple years. Auburn struggled LY after Cam Newton graduated and Russell Wilson chose Wisconsin over The Plains, so curious to see if they’ve come up with a decent QB. Clemson brought in a new DC; we’ll see if its helped.

    9) I’m not a morning person, so not sure how much of 9am Notre Dame-Navy game I’m going to see. Navy had had the edge in this series last few years. Game is being played in Ireland, which is why the early kickoff.

    8) Penn State starts a new era Saturday, hosting Ohio U; game opened at Penn State -15 back in the spring-- they were -6 last time I looked.

    7) Florida International was a home favorite over Duke LY, but blew a 4th quarter lead and lost 31-26; their 7-6/8-5 seasons the last two years are first winning seasons in FIU history. Panthers are visiting Duke this week.

    6) FOX has Gus Johnson calling its Game of the Week, so the mute button could be in order; this week’s game is Hawai’i-USC, as Norm Chow makes his debut as a head coach. For some reason, FOX hired Erin Andrews to work its pregame show; I would’ve gone for ESPN’s Jenn Brown instead. Think she’s smarter and has more personality to carry a show like that.

    5) Miami-Boston College is an interesting league game for the first weekend. BC won at Miami LY as a 13-point underdog.

    4) Troy-UAB split a pair of one-point decisions the last two years; Trojans had their worst season under long-time coach Blackeney LY (3-9); they’ve lost three of last four visits to UAB, with two of three losses by a single point.

    3) Underdogs covered five of last six Georgia Tech-Virginia Tech games; why would any receiver go to GT? All you’re going to do there is block for four years.

    2) San Diego Padres are 17-10 this month, with Chase Headley driving in 30 runs; if they have a good September, you think they have momentum heading into 2013?

    1) Actor Terry Kiser from Weekend at Bernie’s is throwing out the first ball at the Red Sox-A’s game Saturday. The A’s have adopted “The Bernie” as kind of a celebratory dance and its actually gotten to this point. Kind of cool they’re having fun during a pennant race. Somehow Kiser made three movies as Bernie, playing a dead guy for 2.5 of them.

Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (13-10, 3.63 ERA)

Wainwright collected his sixth straight victory on Sunday after working 5 2/3 solid innings in a 8-2 triumph over Cincinnati. Wainwright, who celebrated his 31st birthday on Thursday, has yielded just one homer in his last eight starts. He is 3-2 in his career versus the Nationals, but has yet to face them this season.

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (8-7, 3.88 ERA)

Halladay will need a strong September to avoid his lowest win total since posting 12 victories in 2005, but he has looked more like his old self in the past few weeks. The veteran right-hander is 4-1 in August with a 2.75 ERA in five outings - after winning just four of his first 14 starts. Halladay has struggled in two 2012 starts against Atlanta, going 0-1 and surrendering 11 earned runs in 11 1/3 innings.

                Slumping

Ubaldo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians (9-13, 5.58 ERA)

Much like his team, Jimenez is finding victories hard to come by, logging a 1-6 record and 7.96 ERA in his last nine starts. He was a loser to the New York Yankees in his last outing, giving up three runs in five innings. Jimenez has pitched seven innings only four times this season, the last time coming on July 2. He had his best outing of the year against Texas in May, allowing two hits in seven scoreless innings.

Aaron Cook, Boston Red Sox (3-7, 4.76 ERA)

Cook, who has dropped six of his last seven decisions, will look to avenge a July 4 loss to Athletics when he takes the mound on Friday. The 33-year-old sinkerballer yielded three runs and nine hits in six innings in the 3-2 setback. In his last outing, Cook recorded a quality start versus Kansas City, but did not collect a decision in Boston's 10-9 loss

                      CFL

                      Week 10

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CFL preview: B.C. Lions at Montreal Alouettes
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      B.C. Lions at Montreal Alouettes (+2, 52.5)

The rest of the CFL needs to stand and take notice. The Alouettes are gaining traction after a slippery start to the CFL season, winning three straight including a 31-29 victory over Hamilton last week.

Montreal kicker Sean Whyte booted a go-ahead field goal with nine seconds remaining to give the Als some momentum heading into this huge East-vs.-West showdown.

The Lions come into Friday with a ton of steam as well, having won four in a row after knocking off Winnipeg, 20-17, with a last-second field of their own. Paul McCallum split the uprights with just one tick remaining on the clock to edge the Bombers last Friday.

Week 10’s premier contest pits the Als’ potent pass attack of QB Anthony Calvillo and blossoming WR S.J. Green against B.C.’s stingy defense, which is allowing just 227.1 passing yards per game – tops in the CFL.

The last time these two giants collided, the Lions embarrassed the Alouettes 43-1 and limited Calvillo to just 9-for-17 passing and 63 yards, sacking the veteran pivot four times on November 5, 2011. British Columbia is going with a similar game plan Friday, knowing the best way to beat Montreal is to get to the Als' star passer early and often.

The Lions have dominated this matchup in recent years – at least from a betting standpoint. British Columbia is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 trips to Montreal and boasts a 21-6 ATS mark in their last 27 head-to-head meetings.

                            NASCAR betting: AdvoCare 500 preview

Sunday night’s AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway will be an act of desperation for some. Five-hundred miles that could make or break an entire NASCAR Sprint Cup season.

Chief among the desperate is Jeff Gordon. Atlanta marks Gordon’s best chance to add another win to his season total and secure a wildcard spot in this year’s Chase.

Gordon leads all active drivers with five wins at Atlanta. He’s also the defending winner of this race having taken the victory in an event that was rescheduled to Tuesday due to rain last season. Gordon rolls into the weekend 14th in standings with only one victory. He desperately needs to end up in Victory Lane Sunday night to have a chance to make the Chase. Given that the rescheduled event was in daylight last year, Gordon anticipates a different race Sunday.

"I expect the track to be a lot faster at night,” Gordon told reporters. “But I think we will still be able to race high, low and everywhere in between. I think one of the reasons so many drivers and teams love this place is the track has a lot of grip, a lot of banking and it is a very fast race track - especially when looking at the qualifying speeds. It's very fast during the race but it has a lot of fall off, so tire wear is significant and the balance of the car changes throughout a run."

Tony Stewart is barely hanging on to a Chase spot only 11 points ahead of 11th. He was second here last year and won in 2010. Stewart will be looking for redemption after being knocked out early last week at Bristol. With his hold on 10th spot in the standings tenuous at best, Stewart will be another driver desperate for a win and could do so Sunday. To Stewart Atlanta is all about balance.

“When the track cools down at Atlanta, it gains a lot of grip,” Stewart said. “It’s a very temperature-sensitive racetrack. So, the biggest thing is just keeping your balance and keeping up with it as the track cools off. Normally, I can’t say that it changes a bunch balance-wise, it just changes a lot grip-wise. So, just having the car adjustable enough from the start of the race to the end of the race is important.”

The driver just behind Stewart in 11th spot in points could lock up a spot in the Chase by taking over the 10th spot or at least a Wild Card spot with win Sunday night. Kasey Kahne has two victories on the season; a third win could knock Stewart out of 10th and put Kahne into the top seeding for this year’s Chase. He won the pole last year and heads to Atlanta for the first time in a Hendrick Motorsports Chevy.

“Atlanta is my favorite track on the circuit,” Kahne said. “It’s wide and fast, so we can race a lot of different lines. We have a good history here, and I expect a good weekend with a Hendrick Motorsports car under me.”

Jimmie Johnson has three wins here, including a season sweep in 2007. He was second in this race last season and with the strong performances he’s been putting down lately, could easily steal the show Sunday night.

Keep an eye on: Carl Edwards has three wins here and has scored two top five finishes in the last two Atlanta races. Perhaps no one is more desperate for a win than Edwards who’s only chance to make the Chase is to score a win.

"We are headed to Atlanta this weekend knowing what we need to do as a team,” crew chief Chad Norris said. “We are focused and determined, and we refuse to give up on making the Chase. We have two races left and Atlanta has always been a great track for Carl. A win there would put us right in the thick of the battle for the two wild card spots. In the next two weeks we’ve got 725 laps to give it all we have.”

Bottom Line: 14 races have been won from the pole. The last to do so was Kasey Kahne in 2006. The last two races have been won from the fifth position. 60 of the 104 races at Atlanta have been won from the first five starting positions.
