    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Josh Beckett allowed three runs in 5.2 IP at Coors Field in his Dodger debut. LA got blanked 10-0, as the bullpen got lit up late.

-- Mark Teixeira strained a calf muscle, should be out a while. Bronx lost in 10 to Toronto, but luckily for them, the Rays also lost.

-- Atlanta Braves are now 2-15 on Mondays, 17-3 on Fridays.

-- Sliding Pirates cut opening day starting pitcher Erik Bedard.

-- In his last three starts, Felix Hernandez has allowed 14 baserunners and one run in 25.2 IP. Contenders will want to miss him in September.

-- Jim Furyk has won $2,702,205 this year, 18th on money list, most of any golfer who hasn't won a tournament in 2012.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

    13) Adrian Gonzalez on the Dodgers is a PR disaster for the Padres, who traded the Mexican (San Diego is very close to Mexico) star as far away from southern California as possible, only to find him batting cleanup for their arch-rival less than two years later. Wonder if that is why Casey Kelly was rushed to the major leagues for his debut Monday night.

Kelly was part of the package San Diego got for Gonzalez LY- he is winless in eight minor league starts this year, after being hurt most of the season. The other main part of the package, 1B Anthony Rizzo, has already been traded to the Cubs (for talented but oft-injured pitcher Andrew Cashner).

Kelly pitched well Monday (six IP) and won his MLB debut 3-0.

    12) Atlanta’s Martin Prado played all four games in the San Francisco series this weekend, but started at a different position every game: LF Thursday, SS Friday, 3B Saturday, 2B Sunday. Valuable guy.

    11) 10 of the 32 starting QBs in the NFL are in their first or second season as pros. Used to be not that long ago a QB sat and waited his turn 2-3 years before getting his chance to start. Not anymore.

    10) Former Packer assistant Joe Philbin is the new head coach of Miami, but after watching HBO’s Hard Knocks at Dolphins’ training camp, you realize OC (former Packer coach) Mike Sherman has an awful lot of influence for an assistant coach.

The franchise QB, rookie Ryan Taneyhill, played for Sherman at Texas A&M and Taneyhill’s position coach, Zac Taylor, is Sherman’s son-in-law. This week’s episode should be interesting, when they trade CB Vontae Davis to the Colts for draft picks.

    9) I’m behind on my movie watching, but I saw Game Changer (about the 2008 Presidential election) this weekend. Kind of alarming that a dimwit like Sarah Palin got as close as she did to the Oval Office. What were they thinking, choosing her to run for VP?

    8) So Dez Bryant has a midnight curfew and three security people? Doesn’t sound good. Someone better get him Madden13 and get him hooked on video games, so he has something to do late at night.

    7) Cliff Lee’s win Sunday was his first win in 13 home starts this year.

    6) Elias Sports Bureau contributed this gem: Boston’s Pedro Ciriaco is batting .460 (29-63) in Red Sox wins, .263 (20-76) in Boston losses.

    5) Elias also points out that over their last five Augusts, the Pirates are a dismal 41-99 (.293). it would help if the Pirate owner wouldn’t hijack the team to a charity event when they got off the airplane from their West Coast trip, instead of giving them a much-needed day off.

    4) NFL teams have to cut down from 75 players on Monday to 53 on Friday, then they’ll sign five guys to their practice squad. That means 704 guys get cut, 160 get signed to practice squads, leaving 544 people out of work. Tough week for the unemployment figure.

    3) So the Seahawks paid Matt Flynn $13M and he’s not starting? Yikes.

    2) Speaking of the Seahawks and Russell Wilson, wonder what the folks at NC State think of all this. Wilson played three years for Wolfpack, but was then cut by coach Tom O’Brien because Wilson played minor league baseball instead of spring football.

Wilson then transferred to Wisconsin, where he played very well LY and is now starting as a rookie in the NFL.

Makes you wonder how Wilson would’ve fared had he stayed at NC State, and it must put at least a little extra pressure on senior QB Mike Glennon, who backed Wilson up for two years. Glennon’s productivity this year is the payoff for letting him play LY, after they cut Wilson loose.

    1) Jets didn’t score a TD in preseason with Sanchez/Tebow playing, which really isn’t that important, since it appears they’ve been holding back some on their whole offensive package.

Wouldn’t hurt if they scored a TD early in the opener with Buffalo, just to shut the boobirds up. A slow start September 9 and things could get ugly before halftime.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals (15-5, 2.85 ERA)

The Nationals are letting their young ace play out the rest of the regular season – for now. Some of that faith has to come from the fact that Miami hasn’t scored on Strasburg in 18 innings of action this season. The righty brings a four-game winning streak into Tuesday, giving up only four earned runs on 12 hits while striking out 29 batters in that span.

James Shields, Tampa Bay Rays (12-7, 4.01 ERA)

Shields is one of the hottest pitchers this month, posting a 3-0 mark and 2.83 ERA in four August appearances. The Rays right-hander has five straight quality starts heading into Tuesday’s tilt with Texas, which he owns a 6-2 career record against along with a 3.32 lifetime ERA.

                Slumping

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-11, 5.63 ERA)

Romero allowed five runs on seven hits while walking eight in a 5-3 loss to Detroit last Tuesday. The lefty is in a free fall, dropping 10 of his last 11 starts after beginning the campaign 8-1. His last win came in Miami on June 22.

Vance Worley, Philadelphia Phillies (6-9, 4.06 ERA)

The Phillies might be the hottest team in baseball right now, but Worley’s struggles continue. The young righty has dropped three of his last four outings, failing to go at least six innings in all but one of those starts. He hasn't been great versus the Mets for his short career, with a 3-3 record and 4.76 ERA against the NL East rival.

Cardinals at Pirates: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates (+108, 8)

The St. Louis Cardinals are flying high and the host Pittsburgh Pirates are spiraling downward entering Tuesday’s second contest of a three-game set. The Cardinals won the opener for their sixth win in seven games to strengthen their position in the National League wild-card race. Meanwhile, the Pirates have dropped six of seven games and are three games behind St. Louis in the wild-card competition. Matt Holliday hit the go-ahead homer in Monday’s game.

The Cardinals hope to get third baseman David Freese (wrist) back after a three-game absence. Holliday leads the National League with 90 RBIs and is 14-for-31 (.452) during an eight-game hitting streak. First baseman Allen Craig is 11-for-23 (.478) with nine RBIs over the last five games. Pittsburgh star Andrew McCutchen had two hits for only his third multi-hit outing in his last 19 games. McCutchen is batting only .245 in August after a torrid July in which he batted .446. His .345 average is second best in the NL, one point behind suspended Melky Cabrera of the San Francisco Giants.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, FS Midwest (St. Louis), Root Sports (Pittsburgh)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Cardinals RH Jake Westbrook (13-9, 3.67 ERA) vs. Pirates LH James McDonald (11-6, 3.73)

Westbrook has won six of his last seven starts, with the defeat coming against the Pirates when he allowed two runs (one earned) and six hits in 7 2/3 innings on Aug. 17. He beat the Houston Astros in his last outing despite allowing five runs and seven hits in five innings. Westbrook is 1-3 with a 3.71 ERA in four starts against Pittsburgh this season, and has a 1-6 mark and 4.63 ERA in 12 career appearances (eight starts).

McDonald has a 7.29 ERA in eight starts since the All-Star break. He appeared to rediscover his form when he threw six innings of two-hit shutout ball against the Cardinals two starts ago, but then lost to the San Diego Padres in his last outing by giving up four runs and five hits in five innings. McDonald is 3-1 with a 2.76 ERA in nine career appearances (five starts) against the Cardinals.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Pittsburgh.
                  * Under is 4-0 in Westbrooks last four road starts vs. Pirates.

                  * Road team is 6-1 in Johnsons last seven games behind home plate vs. Pittsburgh.

                  WALK-OFFS:

                  1. Pirates 3B Pedro Alvarez is 7-for-11 with a homer against Westbrook this season. He has 16 RBIs against St. Louis this season.

                  2. Craig is 4-for-10 with a homer and two doubles against McDonald and has a .393 career mark in 28 games against Pittsburgh.

                  3. Pittsburgh 2B Neil Walker (back) was scratched before the opener and his availability for Tuesday is unknown.

                    Tuesday's betting tips: N.J. hires high-powered lawyers

                    WEATHER TO WATCH

At the U.S. Open in New York:

A bit dodgy this morning. Expected to clear around noon. High 80's, windy and humid.

                    WHO'S HOT?

The under and the opposition in Houston Astros games. The under is 4-1-2 in the last seven Stros contests and they've won just one of their past 10 games. Houston has scored just 20 runs in its past 10 games.

                    WHO'S NOT?

The home team in umpire Ed Wilckox's games. The road side is 14-8 in games he's been behind home plate this season.

                    KEY STAT

2 mph. That's the number Josh Beckett's velocity has dropped by at a minimum on all his pitches since 2009, according to this ESPN story. Beckett is winless in his last seven starts after losing last night (10-0 to Colorado) to begin his career with the Dodgers.

                    GAME OF THE DAY

St. Louis Cardinals at Pittsburgh Pirates (+107, 8)

                    INJURY THAT SHOULDN"T BE OVERLOOKED

Venus Williams is suffering from a back injury heading into her Round 1 match against fellow American Bethanie Matteck-Sands. It's also hard to tell day-to-day how she'll be affected by the autoimmune disease from which she suffers, Sjorden’s Syndrome, which can leave her tired and sluggish. Matteck-Sands is a +800 underdog today with Venus set at -1400.

                    BETTING NEWS AND NOTES:

-- New Jersey has brought in some high powered lawyers to defend against a lawsuit seeking to prevent sports betting in the state.

-- The Orioles have won a franchise-record 13 straight one-run games. Baltimore is a +134 home underdog versus the White Sox.

-- In his last start, Blue Jays ace Ricky Romero became the first pitcher in more than four years to walk eight batters and not record a strikeout. Toronto is a +208 underdog versus the Yankees.

-- Giants pitcher Matt Cain is 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA in four career games - three starts - at Minute Maid Park. San Francisco is a -210 favorite in Houston

Best and worst NFL preseason Week 4 bets

Week 3 of the preseason gave football bettors a glimpse at what life will be like in Week 1 of the NFL season. As for Week 4, well, let’s just say the final game on the preseason slate will test your mettle as well as patience.

Teams rarely play their starters and are ironing out the final wrinkles in the roster in Week 4. Keep a close eye on position battles, as guys fight to stay in the NFL. Here’s a quick look at which teams historically do well and which ones struggle against the spread in the final exhibition tilt, going back to 1995.

Stats from Week 4 of the NFL preseason over the past 16 years.

                        Best Week 4 preseason bets

Denver Broncos (11-5 SU, 11-5 ATS)

Peyton Manning looks good to go, so Broncos backers shouldn’t bank on a Week 4 appearance from No. 18. Denver’s stellar Week 4 preseason record against the spread has a lot to do with former head coach Mike Shanahan, who is one of the few coaches who actually give two craps about the exhibition win/loss count.

Minnesota Vikings (7-8 SU, 11-5 ATS)

The Vikings have a few positions still up for grabs heading into the last tune-up tilt, especially on defense. Minnesota has been plagued by injuries this preseason, so while it needs to sure up some spots, it will be careful with the starters in Week 4.

Pittsburgh Steelers (10-6 SU, 11-5 ATS)

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin likes to head into the regular season on a high note. Since taking over the big job in Steel Town, Tomlin boasts a 5-0 SU mark and a 4-1 ATS record in Week 4 of the preseason. Pittsburgh lost rookie OL David DeCastro to a nasty knee injury last week and will be looking to plug that hole Thursday. Don’t expect oft-injured QB Ben Roethlisberger to be part of that experiment.

                        Worst Week 4 preseason bets

Philadelphia Eagles (4-12 SU, 4-12 ATS)

Andy Reid has historically not given a rat’s ass about the preseason since becoming head coach of the Eagles in 1999. Reid owns a 3-10 SU and ATS record in Week 4 of the exhibition schedule, with the majority of those games coming against the Jets. Subsequently, New York is a profitable 11-5 ATS in Week 4 of the preseason since 1995.

New Orleans Saints (6-10 SU, 6-10 ATS)

The Saints flexed their muscles with a Week 3 win over the Texans and head into Week 4 of the preseason with a 3-1 ATS mark during the warm-up slate. New Orleans was forced to travel to Tennessee early with Tropical Storm Isaac threatening the Gulf Coast. With possible evacuations for Louisiana, don’t expect the Saints to be thinking about football much Thursday night.

Green Bay Packers (6-10 SU, 4-10-2 ATS)

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy has a 1-5 SU and 1-4-1 ATS count in the final preseason outing since becoming the big cheese in Green Bay. The Packers didn’t show much through the first two weeks of the exhibition calendar and looked good against the Bengals last week. That’s more than enough for McCarthy, who won’t be showing much Thursday.
