College football lines that make you go hmmm...

A new football season means a whole new crop of “Football Lines That Make You Go Hmmm…”.

Week 1 of the college football slate begins this Thursday and there are more than a few odds out there making bettors scratch their heads. Here’s a look at three games which lines are making us go “Hmmm” this week:

Navy Midshipmen vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish (-16.5, 57)

This line has baffled many football bettors ever since Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees was suspended. Most markets opened the Irish around -17 and have since dropped the spread to 16.5. However, with the recent news that Notre Dame starting RB Cierre Wood was suspended for the first two games, you would expect another line move for the Irish.

              That hasn’t been the case.

While the total has reflected those missing players, going from 58.5 to 57, the spread is staying put at 16.5 – a testament to the public appeal of Notre Dame.

Minnesota Golden Gophers at UNLV Runnin’ Rebels (+8.5, 50)

The Runnin’ Rebels were putrid last season, going a nauseating 3-8-1 ATS. While Bobby Hauck has some experience returning on offense, UNLV managed the fourth fewest yards in the nation in 2011 and isn’t expected to do much more in 2012.

Minnesota isn’t the cream of the crop in the Big Ten but has plenty of returning talent and a game-breaker in QB MarQueis Gray, who can manufacture touchdowns all by himself.

This spread has bounced around this summer, going as low as 7 and as high as 9.5. A big stinky middle could be in the cards for books taking action against the Vegas kids.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Northern Illinois Huskies (+10, 50)

Chandler Harnish was one of the best kept secrets in college football and carried NIU to 11 wins and a bowl victory before making the move to the pros. The Huskies, who averaged 476.1 yards (11th in the country) last season, return just three starters from that offense.

Iowa lost starting RB Marcus Coker to transfer but returns QB James Vandenberg, who was third in passing yards per game in the Big Ten and posted a 25-to-7 TD-to-INT count. New offensive coordinator Greg Davis has a few new wrinkles and the chops to soften the loss of the 1,375 yards and 12 TDs departed WR Marvin McNutt put up in 2011.

Early-bird action has walked this spread from 6.5 all the way to 10. Could game-day money push it past that the key number?

                Armadillo's Write-Up

                Week 1

                Thursday's games

South Carolina won 10 of its last 12 games with SEC rival Vanderbilt, winning last three by average score of 19-7. Gamecocks won five of last six visits here (4-2 vs spread). This is smallest series pointspread since 2006, a Commodores have improved their program. Vandy was 3-0 as a home dog LY, after going 8-18 from '04-'10; their QB is Jordan Rodgers, brother of Packer QB Aaron- he started seven games LY. Carolina's QB is Connor Shaw, who was nine career starts. Gamecocks are 7-4-1 as a road favorite since '06.

Terry Bowden is the new coach at Akron, which is 5-31 last three years. Central Florida-Akron haven't met since 2004; Zips have eight starters back on offense, five on defense- they're 4-8 as home dogs over last three years. Akron's starting QB LY completed only 48% of his passes LY, which is awful, so not sure if he is still the starter. UCF has 8 starters back on both sides of ball; since '03, they're 7-13 as a road favorite and will have a new QB. One candidate is Tyler Gabbert, brother of Blaine.

Underdogs covered seven of last nine Eastern Michigan-Ball State games, with Ball State winning five of last six. Last three series games have been decided by three or less points. Eastern had 570 rushing yards last two meetings, but split the pair. Ball has 8 tarters back on offense; their QB has 22 career starts, so they're strong there, especially with four starters back on OL. EMU is 8-5 as a road dog last two years; they've got nine starters back on offense and a QB with 27 career starts. Ball State is 1-7 as a home favorite since Brady Hoke left town.

Texas A&M-Louisiana Tech game has been postponed because of the tropical storm. Game will be made up on October 13.

UMass is playing its first game in I-A; they lost 42-37 at Michigan two years ago, 45-17 at Boston College LY; UMass QB Pagel is son of Colts' alum Mike Pagel; he had nine TDs, nine INT LY. Minutemen have had negative turnover ratio four years in row, while going 23-22. UConn has 8 starters back on defense, 6 on offense; over last decade, they're 30-20 as a favorite, 20-15 at home. Huskies have three starters back on the OL; they're +20 in turnovers the last two seasons.

First game at UCLA for former NFL coach Mora, with 7 starters back on offense, 9 on defense. Bruins have Nebraska coming to Rose Bowl next week, better not be looking ahead here-- this is first time since '09 they're favored to win a road game (2-0 as road fave under Neuheisel). Rice is 10-26 last three years, but 13-7-1 vs spread as home underdog since 2006. Owls lost six starters on both sides of ball, but their junior QB has started ten games. They lost four starters on offensive line.

Mike Leach is new coach at Washington State, so we know Coogs will be throwing the ball; State has 7 starters back on both sides of ball, with three starters back on OL-- they were 7-4 as road dog last two seasons under Wulff, but they were 9-40 SU in his four years. Independent BYU is 19-13 as a home favorite since '06; they play archrival Utah in couple weeks, not sure they'll show everything here. BYU also has 7 starters back on both sides of ball, with a senior QB who has 17 career starts.

UNLV is starting a redshirt freshman QB, as they try to turn around a program that is 4-21 SU under Hauck, but 6-2-1 vs spread as home dog. Home side has covered 20 of their last 24 games. Rebels have 7 starters back on offense, 5 on defense, with their whole OL back. Minnesota is 7-13 as a favorite since '07, losing 11 of last 15 road games SU. Gophers have six starters back on both sides of ball, with athletic senior QB who has also played some WR- they've got three sophs, two juniors starting on OL. It'll take some onions to lay 8 points on road with Gophers.

UT-San Antonio-South Alabama game has been moved to Saturday due to the tropical storm. This is both teams' first game in I-A.

What bettors need to know: Thursday's NCAAF action

The NCAA football season kicks off Thursday with 17 games on the schedule for bettors to choose from. We give you the essential tidbits on five of them to make your wagers.

Minnesota Golden Gophers at UNLV Runnin' Rebels (+8.5, 50)

Jerry Kill's first season as the head coach in Minnesota resulted in a 3-9 record. Kill, a kidney cancer survivor, suffered two seizures last year, including one on the field against New Mexico State on Sept. 10. Minnesota ranked 110th in total offense in 2011 and will rely heavily on senior quarterback MarQueis Gray to improve the offense this season.

UNLV’s passing offense ranked 118th out of 120 FBS programs with an average of just 109.6 YPG. If quarterback Caleb Herring doesn’t show he’s improved since last season, 6-foot-5 freshman Nick Sherry could get a shot at running the offense.

Washington State Cougars at Brigham Young Cougars (-13.5, 62)

Mike Leach became well known for his "Air Raid" offense while at Texas Tech and will bring similar schemes to Washington State this season. The Cougars ranked ninth in the nation in passing (322.3 YPG) last season and should only improve on that mark under the tutelage of Leach.

BYU is coming off of a 10-3 season and has a returning starter at quarterback. Senior Riley Nelson, who went 6-1 in games he started last season, is already considered a candidate for the 2012 Davey O'Brien Award.

UCLA Bruins at Rice Owls (+15.5, 56)

Jim Mora Jr's first game as a college head coach is on the road against Rice. The Bruins are 60-28-5 all-time in season openers, but are still searching for a No. 1 quarterback to lead the offense this season. Senior Richard Brehaut is the most likely candidate for the starting gig, but Kevin Prince and redshirt freshman Brett Hundley have been impressive in camp.

The Owls missed the bowl season for the third consecutive season and finished fourth in the C-USA's West Division last year. Head coach David Bailiff spent a significant amount of time reviewing Arizona State tape with his players to break down the schemes that Noel Mazzone, UCLA’s new offensive coordinator, used during his tenure with the Sun Devils.

South Carolina Gamecocks (9) at Vanderbilt Commodores (+7, 46)

South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw missed most of practice Thursday because of back spasms, just a week before the ninth-ranked Gamecocks open the season at Vanderbilt. Shaw is a junior beginning his first full season as starting quarterback. He took over last fall for Stephen Garcia, who was dismissed from the program.

Running back Warren Norman will see his first game action since Oct. 30, 2010, because of injuries. Remember, Norman broke Herschel Walker’s SEC single-season freshman all-purpose yardage record in 2009 and should be a force this season for Vandy.

Central Florida Knights at Akron Zips (+23.5, 46.5)

The Knights hold a 21-12 record in openers and have won their last six. The Knights went 5-7 in 2011 with a 3-5 mark in Conference USA. Central Florida had six selections to the C-USA All-Freshman Team, marking the most by a league school since 2008.

The Zips have six quarterbacks on their roster, five of which are either freshmen or redshirt freshmen. The only pivot with collegiate experience is senior Dalton Williams, who was the backup quarterback at Stephen F. Austin from 2008-11. The Zips are 3-0 all-time when hosting the Knights.

NCAAF biggest betting mismatches: Week 1

If your handicapping method leans heavily on spotting mismatches, Week 1 of the college football season is your Christmas morning.

Heavyweight title-contending programs like to stretch their legs against much weaker foes, even locking horns with some FCS squads in an effort to boost confidence and iron out the details before the “real” games begin.

However, some teams are tested right out of the gate. And those are the contests we’ll focus on in our first NCAAF mismatches article of the year.

UMass Minutemen at UConn Huskies (-24.5)

UMass' FBS jitters vs. UConn's aggressive defense

The Minutemen meet an old foe in their first FBS game. Massachusetts goes up against an aggressive and experienced defense, with the Huskies returning eight starters including all three linebackers. Connecticut ranked at the bottom of the Big East in pass defense last year but gambled a lot, forcing 31 turnovers (13 fumbles, 18 interceptions). Expect the Huskies to take advantage of a nervous Minutemen squad.

Boise State Broncos at Michigan State Spartans (-7, 45.5)

Michigan State RB Le'Veon Bell vs. Boise State run defense

Bell finished eighth in the Big Ten in rushing as a sophomore and will get even more carries as a junior with the major turnover in talent in the Spartans’ passing game. Boise State head coach Chris Petersen knows he’s in for a long night against the 6-foot-2, 244-pound running back, losing all for starting linemen as well as the top three linebackers from 2011.

"We've taped two of our running backs together and they carry the ball at the same time to get a little feel of what it'd be like to really tackle a guy (that size), because we don't have anybody around here who looks like that," Peterson told mlive.com. "He is a load. And that'll be different for our guys."

Nevada Wolf Pack at California Golden Bears (-10.5, 55.5)

Nevada’s pistol offense vs. California defense

The last time these two met, Nevada’s option-heavy package rolled over the Golden Bears for a 52-31 win back in 2010. Of course, former QB Colin Kaepernick did most of the damage. The Wolf Pack have another dangerous dual-threat in sophomore QB Cody Fajardo, who rushed for 11 touchdowns last season. Cal’s defense suffered some serious losses, most notably Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year LB Mychal Kendricks.

College football is back - finally. If you're looking to bet big but only have a short amount of time to handicap, let our Top 25 cheat sheet help you out. We grabbed some quick hitting info on each of the Top-25 matchups with odds available in Week 1 of the season:

South Carolina Gamecocks at Vanderbilt Commodores (+6.5, 45)

The Gamecocks have won nine of 11 games against Vanderbilt in Nashville. The road team is 6-2-1 ATS in their last nine meetings.

Boise State Broncos at Michigan State Spartans (-6.5, 46.5)

Boise State and Michigan State have never met – the Broncos lost to Wisconsin in 1997 in their lone game against a Big Ten school and the Spartans are 7-2 against current members of the Mountain West. The Spartans have won 11 consecutive home openers since falling to Colorado State in 1998.

San Jose State Spartans at Stanford Cardinal (-26, 51.5)

Stanford has won the last four meetings since suffering a humbling 35-34 loss to the Spartans in 2006. The Cardinal lead the series 50-14-1. Spartans are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings and 0-7 ATS in their last seven games in Stanford.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish vs. Navy Midshipmen (+15.5, 56.5)

After losing to Navy 35-17 in 2010 – a second straight loss to the Midshipmen – Notre Dame rebounded with an impressive 56-14 victory last season, it’s biggest blowout in 2011. Midshipmen are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games as underdogs.

Buffalo Bulls at Georgia Bulldogs (-37.5, 53.5)

The Bulls are 0-3 against current SEC schools. Buffalo won its last game against a Top 25 team, upending No. 12 Ball State in the 2008 MAC championship game 42-24. The Bulls are 1-7 ATS in their last eight non-conference games.

Marshall Thundering Herd at West Virginia Mountaineers (-24.5, 65.5)

West Virginia has won all 11 meetings against Marshall, however, the Thundering Herd are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings. The Herd has not defeated a ranked opponent since a win over No. 6 Kansas in 2003, a span of 13 consecutive losses.

Bowling Green Falcons at Florida Gators (-28.5, 48)

The Falcons are 3-6 against ranked teams since 2003, with the last victory coming at No. 25 Pittsburgh in 2008. The Falcons are 12-5-1 ATS in their last 18 games as road underdogs.

Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles at Nebraska Cornhuskers (-20, 53)

Since losing the first game of the 1985 season to Florida State, Nebraska has won each of its next 26 season openers by double figures.

Clemson Tigers at Auburn Tigers (+3.5, 55.5)

Clemson has won 21 of its last 27 season openers and seven of its last 10. The Tigers' three opening losses in the past decade have come against top-25 teams. Auburn has won its last six openers and is 92-25-2 all-time in opening games.

North Texas Mean Green at Louisiana State Tigers (-42.5, 52)

During its 37-game non-conference win streak in the regular season, LSU has outscored opponents 1,479-391, including a 1,163-236 margin at home. Over is 4-1 in Tigers' last five non-conference games.

Hawaii Warriors at USC Trojans (-40, 62.5)

USC is 7-0 against Hawaii and notched a 49-36 victory in 2010 in the most-recent meeting. The Trojans are 28-12 ATS in their last 40 non-conference games.

Wyoming Cowboys at Texas Longhorns (-30, 51)

Texas is 99-17-3 (.845) in openers, including a 77-7-2 (.907) mark at home. Brown has won 13 of his 14 openers at Texas. Cowboys are 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games as road underdogs.

Michigan Wolverines at Alabama Crimson Tide (-14, 45.5)

Michigan is 24-9-1 against current SEC teams, but the Wolverines haven't faced an SEC opponent in the regular season since 2006. Over is 7-1 in Wolverines' last eight versus SEC foes.

Arkansas State Red Wolves at Oregon Ducks (-35, 68.5)

The Ducks averaged 46.1 points, third in the nation last season. Over is 21-4-1 in Ducks' last 26 games as home favorites.

Oklahoma Sooners at UTEP Miners (+31, 61.5)

Oklahoma has won the two previous meetings - 55-14 in 2000 and 68-0 in 2002 - both in Norman. The Sooners are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games.

                          Friday, August 31

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Boise State at Michigan State: What bettors need to know
                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boise State Broncos at Michigan State Spartans (-7, 46.5)

Thirteenth-ranked Michigan State and No. 22 Boise State both feature new starting quarterbacks as they attempt to continue their winning ways in Friday's high-powered season-opening contest.

The Spartans are coming off back-to-back 11-win campaigns but no longer have three-year starter Kirk Cousins, the most prolific passer (9,131 yards, 66 touchdowns) in school history. Andrew Maxwell is Michigan State’s new starter.

Boise State’s Joe Southwick has even bigger shoes to fill in replacing Kellen Moore, who threw 142 career touchdowns and finished his career as the winningest quarterback (50-3) in NCAA history.

The Broncos are playing a high-profile opener for the fourth straight season, having defeated Oregon (2009), Virginia Tech (2010) and Georgia (2011) the past three years.

                          TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN.

LINE: Michigan State -7. Oddsmakers opened MSU as a touchdown favorite and that spread has fallen to 6.5. The total opened at 47 and has dropped half a point.

ABOUT BOISE STATE (2011: 12-1, 6-1 Mountain West): Southwick is a nimble junior who has attempted 54 career passes. The Broncos also have to replace all-everything running back Doug Martin and will call on sixth-year senior D.J. Harper, who has suffered two season-ending knee injuries during his career. Sophomore Matt Miller (62 catches last season) is the top receiver. The Broncos are in transition on defense after losing several key players. Senior cornerbacks Jamar Taylor and Jerrell Gavins and senior weak-side linebacker J.C. Percy are the top defenders.

ABOUT MICHIGAN STATE (2011: 11-3, 7-1 Big Ten): Maxwell is a strong-armed junior who has attempted only 51 career passes. Junior running back Le’Veon Bell rushed for 948 yards and 13 touchdowns last season. Junior receiver Bennie Fowler is healthy after missing most of last season with a foot injury. The Spartans are stacked on defense after having the nation’s sixth-best unit a year ago. Junior outside linebacker Denicos Allen had 11 sacks last season and junior middle linebacker Max Bullough had a team-best 89 tackles. Junior William Gholston (five sacks) is rated as one of the nation’s top defensive ends, and a strong secondary is led senior cornerback Johnny Adams (eight career interceptions) and hard-hitting junior strong safety Isaiah Lewis (four interceptions in 2011).

                          TRENDS:

                          * Broncos are 21-7 ATS in their last 28 road games.

San Jose State at Stanford: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Jose State Spartans at Stanford Cardinal (-25.5, 50.5)

The Andrew Luck era is over and No. 18 Stanford moves on with new quarterback Josh Nunes as it opens the season by hosting nearby neighbor San Jose State on Friday.

The Cardinal were national title contenders the past two seasons with Luck lighting up scoreboards – Stanford scored a school-record 561 points last season – and Nunes is hoping to keep the victories coming in coach David Shaw’s second season at the helm.

San Jose State is optimistically hoping to reach a bowl game for the first time since 2006 in its final season in the watered-down Western Athletic Conference. But ranked teams have long posted a problem for the Spartans, who have lost 19 consecutive games to ranked opponents since upsetting LaDainian Tomlinson and No. 9 TCU in 2000. Stanford won last season’s meeting 57-3.

                            TV: 10 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network.

LINE: Stanford -25.5. Oddsmakers have posted the Cardinal as 25-25.5-point favorites with the total dropping from 53.5 to 50.5.

ABOUT SAN JOSE STATE (2011: 5-7, 3-4 WAC): Junior college transfer David Fales is the starting quarterback and he has potent weapons in junior receiver Noel Grigsby and senior tight end Ryan Otten (52 catches). Grigsby set a school-record with 89 receptions, but had only two touchdowns. Senior De'Leon Eskridge, a transfer from Minnesota, is the main running back. Senior defensive end Travis Johnson (9.5 sacks last season) and junior linebacker Keith Smith (220 tackles the past two seasons) lead a suspect defense.

ABOUT STANFORD (2011: 11-2, 8-1 Pac-12): Nunes edged sophomore Brett Nottingham for the starting job in a battle that lasted until last week. Senior running back Stepfan Taylor is looking for his third consecutive 1,000-yard campaign after rushing for 1,330 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Junior tight end Levine Toilolo (six touchdown catches in 2011) is a solid target and sophomore receiver Ty Montgomery appears ready to step up. Stanford is loaded on defense with senior outside linebacker Chase Thomas (17.5 tackles for losses) leading the way. Senior inside linebacker Shayne Skov is back after suffering a season-ending knee injury last season. Senior defensive end Ben Gardner (4.5 sacks) is the top lineman.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Favorite is 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
                            * Home team is 8-0 ATS in their last eight meetings.
                            * Spartans are 0-4 ATS in their last four meetings.
                            * Spartans are 0-7 ATS in their last seven meetings in Stanford.

                            EXTRA POINTS:

                            1. Stanford has won the last four meetings since suffering a humbling 35-34 loss to the Spartans in 2006. The Cardinal lead the series 50-14-1.

                            2. The Cardinal have won 23 of their last 26 home games.

                            3. San Jose State tied for the national lead by recovering 20 fumbles last season and its 33 turnovers forced tied for fourth nationally.
