    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Nick Watney won by three strokes at Bethpage Black, as he campaigns to make the Ryder Cup squad.

-- Met pitcher Dillon Gee had a clear angiogram Friday, should be good to go next February for spring training.

-- There is a truck at Saratoga racetrack that sells nothing but macaroni and cheese. Its the Mac Truck; how do they make any money?

-- Orioles traded for lefty starter Joe Saunders, trying to bolster starting pitching for the stretch run. Saunders is a Virginia Tech alum.

-- Greedy bastard update: $3.92 a gallon at corner of Fuller/Central; $3.94 at Wolf/Sand Creek in beautiful downtown Colonie. Thieves.

-- If the baseball playoffs started Monday morning, it would be:
AL: Bronx-Chicago-Texas. WC: A's or Baltimore @ Rays
NL: Washington-Cincinnati-Giants. WC: Cardinals @ Braves

    **********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a late summer weekend.......

    13) I am told that people are getting to WalMart an hour early Monday nite to be on line when the Madden13 game goes on sale at midnight. I know nothing about video games, but judging from the amount of commercials for the Madden game on Sunday Night Football, its pretty darn popular.

    12) If Major League Baseball was really serious about quickening pace of games, they wouldn't allow coaches/managers to visit the pitcher's mound.

    Ever.

That would shave several minutes off the average game. You want to change pitchers? Just sub the guy in the way they do in basketball.

    11) Another reason why you should never wager on preseason football; Rams scored a TD with 2:10 left Saturday, cutting the Dallas lead to 20-18, but they kicked the PAT, rather than go for the tying two points. Cowboys then threw a pass on their first play from scrimmage after the onside kick. If you bet on these games, thats the wackiness you have to put up with.

    10) Speaking of my Rams, offensive line coach Paul Boudreau has to be bit restless these days; Rams' OL got manhandled in first quarter in Dallas Saturday night, and in turn, QB Sam Bradford looked fidgety. Bradford is making a king's ransom; he has to be protected better, and he has to stand in there better when he isn't being protected well. This bears watching.

    9) Peyton Manning's Sunday: 10-12 for 122 yards and two TD's. Fantasy football owners all over America just re-did all their lists. Doubt Manning will play in the last preseason game; next time we'll see him, besides 500 of his commercials, is September 9 against the Steelers.

    8) Seattle is starting rookie QB Russell Wilson, so for the third straight year, Arizona Cardinals are opening the season against a rookie QB.

    7) American title game at Little League World Series drew over 24,000 fans Saturday afternoon- Bronx-Cleveland major league game drew 26,166 fans in downtown Cleveland Sunday afternoon.

    6) I don't want to say the Little League World Series takes a long time to play, but school has already started for some of those kids. Parents and siblings give up their whole summers for this stuff. Pretty big sacrifice.

    5) Petaluma's Little League team had a left-handed catcher; if anyone has a good reason why there are no left-handed catchers, other than shortage of lefty catcher mitts, please let me know. I can't think of anything.

    4) Andre Ethier had 10 hits in a row over the weekend, reminding us that the record for most consecutive hits is 12, last done by Walt Dropo, back in 1952. This would be a better known record if a New York player held it.

    3) All of which raises the question: Better record-- Getting 12 hits in a row, getting 1+ hits in 56 consecutive games, or knocking in 190 runs in a season? Its a fair question.

    2) Vin Scully is coming back next year for his 64th season in the Dodger broadcast booth; what an institution he is. Scully once announced in a CBS three-man NFL crew with George Allen and Jim Brown. Lot of egos there.

    1) NFL really needs the regular officials back. I'm just sayin'.....

CFL preview: Edmonton Eskimos at Toronto Argonauts
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edmonton Eskimos at Toronto Argonauts (-3.5, 53)

This is the second meeting between these two teams, who traded quarterbacks in the offseason. So far, Edmonton got the worst of the deal with Steven Jyles, who is the lowest passing QB of any passer with seven starts under his belt. He's nursing a toe injury this week and his favorite target, Fred Stamps, is hurting also.

The Argos defense will be put to the test against running back Cory Boyd, who was unceremoniously dumped by the Argos about 10 days ago despite having a strong season so far. The defense ranks second in yards against in the CFL, but Boyd said this week he knows how to run on them. Argos QB Ricky Ray has to take a little comfort in the fact the Als ripped apart a banged up Eskies defense last week.

              STREAKING

Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners (12-5, 2.54)

Hernandez followed his perfect game with a 7 2/3 inning gem against the Indians on Tuesday, allowing seven hits and one run for his 12th win of the campaign. Hernandez has an 8-0 record with a 1.53 ERA over his last 13 starts and gets the Twins next in Minnesota on Monday.

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (10-7, 3.87)

Arroyo delivered eight innings of two-run ball in Wednesday's win over the Phillies. The right-hander has picked up wins in three consecutive starts, allowing no more than three runs in each of his outings. He has a tough start on the road in Arizona next.

              SLUMPING

              A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (15-4, 3.63)

Burnett allowed 17 baserunners in just 6 1/3 innings of work but managed to give up just four runs against the Padres on Tuesday. After an impressive start to the campaign, the righty has faltered recently giving up 14 earned runs over his last three outings. His next start comes against the Cardinals, a team he has an 11.37 ERA against this season.

Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (7-11, 4.84)

Alvarez allowed eight runs on 12 hits over just 4 1/3 innings of an 11-2 loss to Texas in his last outing. The 12 hits and eight runs allowed were both career highs as the righty took a fourth consecutive loss. He tries to get back on track against the Yankees next time out.

Rounding the bases: The best bets in the bigs
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in major league baseball.

                Hot team: San Diego Padres
                Last week: 6-0
                Season record: 59-70
Upcoming schedule: vs. Braves, at Rockies

Skinny: The Padres completed a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks on Sunday to pick up their season-high seventh straight victory. The Friars also stole all three games from the Pirates earlier in the week.

                Cold team: Toronto Blue Jays
                Last week: 0-5
                Season record: 56-70
Upcoming schedule: at Yankees, vs. Rays

Skinny: The Jays have dropped seven straight contests and find themselves 14 games below .500 for the first time since Sept. 25, 2009. Slugger Jose Bautista, who had just returned from the disabled list on Friday, had to be pulled from Saturday’s game with soreness in his left wrist and went back on the DL.

                Over team: Cincinnati Reds
                Last week: 5-1-1
                Season O/U record: 55-65-9
Upcoming schedule: at Diamondbacks, at Astros

Skinny: Cincinnati played over the total in every contest of a three-game set against division-rival St. Louis last week. Normally a good under team, the Reds’ offense has come alive of late.

                Under team: Cleveland Indians
                Last week: 5-1
                Season O/U record: 60-62-5
Upcoming schedule: vs. Athletics, vs. Rangers

Skinny: The Indians have played under the total in five consecutive games, thanks to a sputtering offense. The Tribe scored just 11 runs over its six games last week against the Mariners and Yankees.

Rays at Rangers: What bettors need to know
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers (+111, 8.5)

Tampa Bay’s David Price continues his pursuit of the American League Cy Young Award when he pitches Monday’s opener of a three-game set against the host Texas Rangers. Price has won eight consecutive decisions, is tied for the major-league lead in victories, and leads the majors with a 2.28 ERA. Texas had a four-game winning streak snapped by the Minnesota Twins on Sunday and leads the American League West by 5 1/2 games over the Oakland Athletics.

The Rays have been splendid against AL West teams this season with a 21-11 record, the best mark in the league. However, Tampa Bay lost the final two games of a series against Oakland before having a rare Sunday off day. The Rays won 14 of 17 games prior to the defeats against Oakland. Josh Hamilton homered and had four RBIs during Texas’ loss to Minnesota on Sunday. Hamilton leads the majors with 111 RBIs. His career high is 130 back in 2008.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, ESPN, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), Fox Sports Southwest (Texas), ESPN3.com

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays LH David Price (16-4, 2.28 ERA) vs. Rangers LH Derek Holland (8-6, 4.92)

Price had never beaten Texas until he defeated them on April 29, allowing two runs in 6 1/3 innings. He is 1-3 with a 5.52 ERA in seven career regular-season starts against the Rangers. Price has been sensational in August with a 0.60 ERA in four starts. He has allowed just 15 hits while holding opposing hitters to a .149 average this month.

Holland beat the Baltimore Orioles in his last start when he allowed three runs and five hits in seven innings. It was his first victory since downing the Boston Red Sox on July 25. Holland lost to Tampa Bay on April 29 when he gave up five runs and nine hits in seven innings. He is 3-2 with a 6.49 ERA in six career starts against the Rays.

                  TRENDS:

                  * Over is 6-1 in Hollands last seven starts vs. Rays.
                  * Under is 5-1 in Prices last six starts vs. Rangers.
                  * Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.

                  WALK-OFFS

                  1. The Rays are 9-4 when Ben Zobrist starts at shortstop and Zobrist is batting .362 in those contests.

                  2. Rangers OF Nelson Cruz is 5-for-10 with a homer against Price.

                  3. Tampa Bay OF B.J. Upton (7-for-15, homer) and 3B Evan Longoria (6-for-16, homer, four doubles) have fared well against Holland.
