    Armadillo: Quotes of the Day

All these are from White Sox' TV announcer Ken Harrelson on Saturday, talking about plate umpire Lance Barrett.

-- "I'll tell you this is absolutely ridiculous. This is absolutely ridiculous."

-- "Lance Barrett has been absolutely brutal. Brutal."

-- "Lance Barrett has just stunk the joint up is all he's done. That's all he's done."

    -- "He's terrible."

-- "This is one of those games where the film is going back to the American League office to show how bad he is."

-- "Everything that (Mariners pitcher) Blake Beavan has thrown up there that (catcher Miguel) Olivo has caught has been a strike. If he caught it, it was a strike. He's got two different strike zones. He's got a two-foot for Beavan, and he's got a 10-inch for the White Sox. What does that tell you?"

-- "This might be as bad as a two innings as I've ever seen from a guy behind the plate or 2 1/3 (innings.) So he's bad, so he throws out our catcher and our manager because he's brutal."

My obervation on Lance Barrett is this: hitter's umpire, doesn't give pitchers the corners. Finesse pitchers have a problem with him.

Facts on Lance Barrett: Over is 10-6-1 in his games this season. Dogs are 9-4 in his last thirteen games behind the plate.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Stuff I learned reading magazines.........

    13) Friday, October 5 is going to be an excellent day; two single-elimination Wild Card baseball games. Winner moves on, loser goes home. Good stuff.

    12) So when the kids from Penn State became free agents, USC coach Lane Kiffin calls up a booster, uses the guy's private plane to fly to New York. Kiffin and a few of his coaches met with Silas Redd for 3.5 hours at his high school coach's house and nine days later, the kid became a Trojan.

When I mention about college teams having resources, thats what I'm talking about. Access to private planes is a huge resource for college teams.

    11) Wisconsin Badgers will be starting another transfer QB from the ACC this year, this time Maryland transfer Danny O'Brien, who was ACC Rookie of the Year in 2010.

    10) Miami Marlins have won two World Series titles, but have never won a division title; they've got a new $634M stadium ($200M less than Citi Field) but a terrible team playing inside of it. Since 1997, they've never finished higher than 22nd in attendance; this season they're #18.

    9) Penn State's football stadium is Beaver Stadium (shouldn't that be the name of Oregon State's stadium?); capacity was 46,284 when Joe Paterno was named head coach in 1966. Capacity now is 106,572.

    8) Amar'e Stoudemire is paying Hakeem Olajuwon a reported $100,000 to work out with him for two weeks so Olajuwon can teach him post moves. Isn't that what the Knicks' coaches are supposed to do?

    7) If you look at the ten pitchers who pitched the most innings last year, you'll see they averaged 238.2 IP per man.

Take it back to 1991, that figure was 249.1. Back to 1971, two years before the DH, and it was 307.4. The best pitchers pitch less innings now.

    6) Friday night in Milwaukee, the Brewers are unveling a 7-foot statue of the great Bob Uecker outside Miller Park. Uecker parlayed his mediocre playing career into a Hall of Fame broadcasting/acting career and is beloved in Wisconsin, so Friday night should be pretty cool.

    5) LSU mascot Mike the Tiger, an actual bengal tiger, can eat as much as 30 pounds of food a day. He also lives in a 13,000-square foot space on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge. Mike has it pretty good.

    4) How do you explain to someone who knows nothing about college sports that San Diego State and Boise State are both going to belong to both the Big East and Big West, starting next season? It makes no freakin' sense.

    3) ESPN showed four high school football games and two Little League games yesterday; I kept waiting for them to show up in their truck and televise kids skateboarding down our street, but I guess the X Games are in June. Its become a tradition for them to televise high school games a week before the colleges take over the airwaves.

    2) 26 of the 30 major league teams have gotten a new stadium since 1991. Fenway/Wrigley are obviously the oldest stadiums, we'll wait until Monday to clue you in on what other two stadiums are the oldest in MLB.

    1) I didn't learn this in a magazine, but Adrian Gonzalez homered in his first AB as a Dodger. Guess he was glad to get out of Boston.

What bettors need to know: Sunday's NFL action

There are two games this Sunday in NFL preseason action as teams prepare to cut their rosters to 75 players Monday. We give you the essential tidbits to make your wagers.

Carolina Panthers at New York Jets (-2.5, 41)

The first team offense is clicking early for the Panthers and they scored a field-goal and two touchdowns in their first-quarter drives against Miami last game. Receiver Steve Smith missed a practice this week with a sore ankle so the first team could be missing him Sunday.

The Jets have said they’re not going to unleash the Wildcat in the preseason so Tim Tebow fans are just going to have to wait. In the meantime, Rex Ryan says he’d like to see Mark Sanchez air it out a little more. He might have wide receiver Santanio Holmes back Sunday night to help him do that.

San Francisco 49ers at Denver Broncos (-1, 40)

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith was sacked twice and hit had on several other occasions during his three series of action in last week's 20-9 loss to the Houston Texans. Smith was sacked a career-high 44 times last campaign, more than any other NFL quarterback. Developing schemes to protect the quarterback will be the club's focus on Sunday.

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning told the Denver Post the starters haven't been informed how long they'll play on Sunday against the 49ers. However, the pivot suggested the group might not be in the game as long because they played more than expected against the Seahawks in Week 2 of the preseason. Manning has completed 20 of 30 pass attempts for 221 yards this preseason and has been picked off three times.

The Broncos hold an 18-15 advantage in their all-time preseason series with San Francisco and have prevailed in nine of the last 11 warm-up contests between the clubs.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    STREAKING

Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals (12-10, 3.65)

Wainwright tossed a complete game shutout against the Astros, while giving up just five hits and striking out 12 in his last outing. The right-hander has won four consecutive starts, allowing only four earned runs over his past 31 innings pitched. He has a tough road start against division-rival Cincinnati next time out.

Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers (13-6, 4.27)

Scherzer allowed one run on five hits over seven innings of a 5-3 win over Toronto on Tuesday night. The righty has picked up wins in three consecutive starts, only surrendering three earned runs during that stretch. He’ll face the Angels at home in his next outing.

                    SLUMPING

Joe Saunders, Arizona Diamondbacks (6-10, 4.22)

After giving up nine runs on 12 hits over 3 2/3 innings against the Marlins on Monday, Saunders was placed on waivers by the D-Backs on Tuesday. The lefty has taken the loss in four of his last five starts and is on the verge of losing his spot in the starting rotation to Tyler Skaggs. He tries to turn things around at home against the Padres on Sunday.

Ricky Romero, Toronto Blue Jays (8-11, 5.63)

Romero allowed five runs on seven hits, while walking eight in a 5-3 loss to Detroit on Tuesday. The lefty is in a free fall, dropping 10 of his last 11 starts after beginning the campaign 8-1. His last win came on June 22 in Miami. He draws the Orioles in his next start.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Giants at Braves
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A rare non-divisional match-up on Sunday Night Baseball as the Giants host the Braves.

                      ACE NO MORE

Tim Lincecum has fallen on hard times this season. The righty is 7-13 with a 5.30 ERA and 151 strikeouts in 146 innings of work. The former Giants’ ace has not seen Atlanta since Aug. 18, 2011, when he lost 1-0 to the Braves on the road. Lincecum surrendered one run and five hits in seven innings, while striking out seven in that contest. "The Freak" is slowly turning the ship around after a slow start this campaign. Lincecum has allowed two runs or less five times over his last eight starts.

                      HUDSON'S HEROES

Tim Hudson is like a fine wine that gets better with age. Hudson is 12-4 with a 3.69 ERA in 134 innings of work, but is no longer is the strikeout pitcher he used to be as he only has 82 this season. He last faced the Giants back on Jul. 19, picking up the win at home. Hudson allowed two runs and eight hits in just over seven innings of work in that start. The right-hander has been rock solid as of late giving up two runs or less in five of his last ten starts. However, he has given up three runs or more in three consecutive road starts in Miami, Philadelphia, and Washington.

                      INJURY REPORT

The health of these two teams has been relatively good for the most part. The Giants are obviously dealing with the 50-game suspension of Melky Cabrera, who solidified the middle of their lineup. Joining him on the sidelines are pitchers Guillermo Mota and Brian Wilson, as well as hitters Aubrey Huff and Freddy Sanchez. The Braves’ problems come in the rotation, as they are without Jair Jurrjens and Brandon Beachy. Tommy Hanson isn't 100 percent as he continues to deal with a lower back strain.

                      TRENDS

Braves are 6-1 in Hudson’s last seven road starts

Braves are 6-2 Over in Hudson's last eight road starts vs. winning teams

Giants are 6-20 in Lincecum’s last 26 starts with four days of rest

Giants are 8-3-2 Under their last 13 Sunday games

                      HITTERS TO WATCH

Michael Bourn is 5-for-21 vs. Lincecum (.238)

Brian McCann is 9-for-27 vs. Lincecum (.333)

Angel Pagan is 11-for-31 vs. Hudson (.355)

Pablo Sandoval is 2-for-14 vs. Hudson (.143)

Sunday's betting tips: Cards' hitters own Bailey

                        Weather to watch

Baseball bettors can expect multiple rain delays on the east coast Sunday. Showers are expected in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago and Baltimore. There’s also a 30 percent of a thunderstorm in Texas.

                        Who’s hot?

The San Diego Padres. The Padres try for their season-high seventh straight victory as they attempt to complete a sweep of their three-game road series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Since ending a five-game skid against San Francisco at home on Aug. 19, San Diego swept its three-game set with Pittsburgh and captured the first two contests of this series, outscoring the Diamondbacks 14-3. The Padres have won six consecutive games at Chase Field after losing 24 of their previous 30 in the desert.

                        Who’s not?

The Toronto Blue Jays. Jose Bautista, who had just returned from the disabled list on Friday, had to be pulled from Saturday’s game with soreness in his left wrist and went back on the DL. The Jays have dropped seven straight contests and find themselves 14 games below .500 for the first time since Sept. 25, 2009.

                        Key stat

4- The number of times Tiger Woods three-putted in Round 3 at The Barclays - the most he’s ever had in a single round on the PGA Tour.

                        Game of the day

St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds (+131, 8.5)

                        Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski left Saturday night's 31-20 Week 3 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions with a groin injury. Janikowski came up limping while giving chase after a kickoff. Janikowski is one of the better kickers in the league, nailing 79 percent of his field goal attempts over 12 seasons.

                        Notable quotable

"It was just scary to look down and see your hand swelling up by the second. That kind of freaked me out. The skin kind of just grew by the second. I didn't know what was going on."-Lions quarterback Matt Stafford after taking a helmet-to-hand hit in Saturday’s preseason game with the Raiders. Stafford took the hit on his non-throwing hand and is expected to be fine for Week 1 of the regular season.

                        Betting news and notes

-The Cardinals' active roster is a collective 40-for-122 (.328) against Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey, with Matt Holliday (9-for-22) and Yadier Molina (6-for-13) leading the way.

-The Red Sox suspended right-handed pitcher Alfredo Aceves for three games for conduct detrimental to the team Saturday. Aceves was upset about not being used in a save situation on Friday. Andrew Bailey is now the undisputed closer in Boston.

-Twins starting pitchers have allowed 18 earned runs and 24 hits in just 9 2/3 innings in their current series with the Rangers.
