    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Looks like the Red Sox are dumping salary, $261M worth, dealing four players (Crawford-Beckett-Gonzalez-Punto) to Dodgers for five guys, and not the hamburger chain. Five less-than-stellar players.

-- Complicating things might be Chad Billingsley's injury Friday night, so LA needs Beckett even more now.

-- Crawford's acquisition cements a CC-Kemp-Ethier outfield in LA, so Shane Victorino will become a free agent. Would Boston want him?

-- Best wishes to Rick Majerus, who has heart problems and has taken a leave of absence from coaching Saint Louis U this season. Former Army and Evansville coach Jim Crews is the interim coach. .

-- I've got no opinion on Lance Armstrong and cycling, seriously I don't, but I know he's done a hell of a lot of good fighting cancer.

-- On June 1st, the A's lost 2-0 in KC, their 9th loss in row and third time in five games they had been shut out. Since then, they're 46-27.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Our major league baseball rankings.....

    30) Astros—Probably the worst major league team since Detroit Tigers went 53-109 back in ’96. Moving to AL next year. Good luck.

    29) Cubs—Boston’s old GM paid John Lackey/Carl Crawford a combined $32M a year, then beat feet with his two World Series rings for a lucrative new gig in ChiTown. He’s cleaning house at Wrigley, will take couple more years to tell how he’s doing.

Meanwhile, people in Boston are cleaning up the mess he left behind.

    28) Indians—Can’t think of anything nice to say about the Tribe, but guy that played Mark Shapiro in Moneyball plays Malcolm McDowell’s nephew in TNT's Franklin & Bash, so there’s that.

??) Mets-- No idea where Mets rank, but the owners rank #30 out of 30, and #29 isn’t close. 0-4 this week vs Colorado/Houston. Astros were 2-16 in Jordan Lyles' starts before he beat the Mets Friday.

??) Red Sox— Is it too late to bring Terry Francona back? They're blowing up the whole team. Wouldn't be shocked if they bought Shane Victorino this winter; he's obviously not staying with the Dodgers.

    8) Braves—Have bolstered pitching nicely by adding Maholm/Medlen to rotation, but they're having a bad week this week.

    7) White Sox-- Adam Dunn is one of those guys that its just fun to watch him hit, unless he’s in a slump and on your fantasy team.

    6) Dodgers-- Making tons of changes, but Billingsley's left Friday's game with an arm injury, which negates the potential acquisition of Beckett.

    5) Giants-- Bochy's club roughed up the Dodgers this week, but does the trade Friday night shifts the balance of power in the NL West?

    4) Rangers—Before you take their recent success for granted, look at their history before this administration took over and realize what a great job they’re doing.

    3) Bronx— Brian Cashman, stop taking calls from the 206 area code. Montero/Pineda trade is all Seattle right now; M’s are 18-10 since dumping Ichiro, Bronx is 16-13 since adding him.

    2) Reds—Aroldis Chapman has replaced Rivera as the game’s dominant closer. Haven’t missed a beat with star 1B Votto on shelf.

    1) Nationals—Siena alum John Lannan will likely join rotation when Nats shut Strasburg down. Couple years ago, Lannan was their Opening Day starter. Still going to be little eerie when Strasburg sits out.

What bettors need to know: Week 3 preseason (Sat, Sun)

There are seven games this weekend in NFL preseason action as teams prepare to cut their rosters to 75 players Monday. We give you the essential tidbits on 6 of them to make your wagers.

      SATURDAY

Indianapolis Colts at Washington Redskins (-3, 43)

The No. 1 and 2 picks in the draft, Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III, meet in a matchup that has about as much hype as you can stand for a preseason game.

Colts owner Jim Irsay was Tweeting about a potential big trade Thursday night, so you might want to be cautious with betting Indy in case of any major personnel changes. That said, Indy has 62 points through two preseason games (most in the league) and has covered both spreads.

Washington’s starters are expected to play about three quarters. Fans are calling for the Skins to let RG3 air it out more but Washington still has to sort out its backfield before Week 1.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Buffalo Bills (+2, 40.5)

The Steelers fired special teams coach Al Everest this week in a strange move in spite of great special teams play from the Steelers the past couple years. Mike Wallace ended his holdout and is expected back Saturday night, which gives the Steelers their top receiver back.

The Bills’ defense got picked apart last week by Minnesota in a 36-14 loss. Not a good sign for the worst red zone defense in the NFL last season. They’ve only generated 20 points through two games also as they try to determine who their backup QB is – Vince Young or Tyler Thigpen - and figure out their top five receivers.

Detroit Lions at Oakland Raiders (+3, 44)

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz says he treats exhibition games as dress rehearsals and has ‘no set plans’ for how long the starters will play Saturday. He said the staff will ‘take it as it comes’ and they’d like to play well and win the game as the top two priorities.

The first-team offense doesn’t have a touchdown yet for the Raiders and QB Carson Palmer has struggled in the first two preseason games, both losses. Palmer told the San Fran Chronicle the preseason is more about trying out new plays and coach Gregg Knapp agrees. "I will sacrifice some of the ups and downs that go with that,” he said. The starters are expected to play at least the first half Saturday.

Also, click here to see why gambling is paying off for over bettors in Rams preseason games so far.

      SUNDAY

Carolina Panthers at New York Jets (-2.5, 41)

The first team offense is clicking early for the Panthers and they scored a field-goal and two touchdowns in their first-quarter drives against Miami last game. Receiver Steve Smith missed a practice this week with a sore ankle so the first team could be missing him Sunday.

The Jets have said they’re not going to unleash the Wildcat in the preseason so Tim Tebow fans are just going to have to wait. In the meantime, Rex Ryan says he’d like to see Mark Sanchez air it out a little more. He might have wide receiver Santanio Holmes back Sunday night to help him do that.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
CFL preview: Week 9 weekend breakdowns
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Calgary Stampeders at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-3.5, 53)

It's a roller coaster season for the Roughriders, who won their first three games to start the year and have now lost their last four. Sasky failed to cover the last three of those. QB Darian Durant needs to limit his interceptions - all seven of 'em have come during the losing streak.

Calgary has won the last four meetings in this series and covered four of those spreads. The Stamps' last three games have played under the total though as they struggle to generate offense. Penalties have hurt them at different times and QB Kevin Glenn is averaging just over 200 yards passing per game - a low number for the Canadian game.

Edmonton Eskimos at Toronto Argonauts (-3.5, 53)

This is the second meeting between these two teams, who traded quarterbacks in the offseason. So far, Edmonton got the worst of the deal with Steven Jyles, who is the lowest passing QB of any passer with seven starts under his belt. He's nursing a toe injury this week and his favorite target, Fred Stamps, is hurting also.

The Argos defense will be put to the test against running back Cory Boyd, who was unceremoniously dumped by the Argos about 10 days ago despite having a strong season so far. The defense ranks second in yards against in the CFL, but Boyd said this week he knows how to run on them. Argos QB Ricky Ray has to take a little comfort in the fact the Als ripped apart a banged up Eskies defense last week.

Bumgarner racked up 10 strikeouts over eight shutout innings of a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers last time out and has put together a string of eight consecutive quality starts. The 23-year-old looks to extend that streak to nine when the Giants host the Braves.

                          SLUMPING

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (8-10, 4.90)

Haren has taken back-to-back losses, surrendering 10 earned runs in his last seven innings pitched. Manager Mike Scioscia recently said he will consider using a four-man rotation if Haren can’t step up in his next outing in Detroit.

Josh Johnson, Miami Marlins (7-10, 3.73)

Johnson has taken the loss in three consecutive starts despite only allowing seven earned runs during that span. The Marlins have only provided the right-hander with three runs of support over his last three outings heading into a tough road battle in Los Angeles against the Dodgers.
