    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- 410 pitches and 4:34 later, Angels outlasted Boston 14-13 in a pitching debacle of epic proportions. Pujols (calf) didn't even play.

-- A's are 67-57, but were shut out in 15 of the 57 losses.

-- Umpire Vic Carapazza, who was villified on TV by Jim Palmer Sunday for being awful, is the son-in-low of former umpire Richie Garcia.

-- Mike Sherman is offensive coordinator for the Dolphins; his assistant QB coach is former Nebraska QB Zac Taylor, Sherman's son-in-law.

-- Arizona Cardinals have some serious problems on the offensive line.

-- Buddy of mine took his son driving for the first time, took him to a spot with lot of turns and not much traffic. A cemetary; brilliant idea!!!

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here......

    13) If you say you don’t like baseball’s Wild Card, think of this: in 1993, the Giants won 103 games but didn’t make the playoffs.

What could be more unfair? Wild Card makes September a really interesting month. It’s the best thing former used car salesman Alan R. Selig has done as Commissioner.

    12) Since 1995, Miami Dolphins are 3-7 in playoff games, with none of the losses by less than 14 points- in 1999, they lost a playoff game 62-7 to Jacksonville.

    11) He may do a great job with the Buccaneers, but it is still surprising to me that Greg Schiano is an NFL head coach. Did you ever once watch Rutgers play over the last decade and think, “This is a guy who will be highly sought after by the pros.”? Me either.

    10) There was a rumor going around this week that the Sacramento Kings are looking into a move to Virginia. This is a franchise that has gone from Rochester-Cincinnati-Kansas City-Omaha-Sacramento. Whats one more out of the way place?

    9) Ever hear of Anthony Calvillo? He’s one of the best QB’s in the Canadian Football League history, throwing for over 73,000 yards for one of the league’s better teams. He's won three Grey Cup titles, and is still going strong despite turning 40 on Thursday. Calvillo played college ball at Utah State and has been Montreal's QB since 1998.

    8) Former Minnesota Gopher football coach Tim Brewster was supposed to work at CBS College Sports this season, but when Mississippi State’s WR coach got in trouble with the NCAA, he got sent packing and Brewster was hired.

    7) Washington Nationals are pretty much stuck adhering to the Strasburg Shutdown Plan, since now, with doctors having advised a shutdown, if they were to ignore the advice and Strasburg got hurt, scumweasel agent Scott Boras has hinted there could be a lawsuit in the works.

    6) Who in Boston is taking credit for the Aaron Cook signing, or will they use the “Aceves had to take the closer’s role when Bailey got hurt” excuse? There will be lot of happy/relieved people when this Red Sox season is over. Boston scored 13 runs Thursday night and still lost.

    5) Cincinnati and the Giants have both used only six starting pitchers this season. San Diego has used 14.

    4) Over last three seasons, Orioles are 74-49 in one-run games, 128-197 in all others.

    3) This is hard to do; David Price didn’t allow a run in his last two home starts, but Tampa Bay lost both games, both 1-0 in 10 innings.

    2) Rays are 14-3 since Evan Longoria came back (a little early maybe) from his hamstring issues. He has mostly DH’d since then, but he is an indispensable part of the lineup, just like Oakland’s Yoenis Cespedes (A’s are 12-20 without him in lineup).

    1) Wednesday afternoon’s attendance in St Pete: 11,892. Thursday night’s attendance: 11,613. When the Rays wind up playing in Nashville or San Antonio or Portland or Charlotte or New Jersey, Rays’ fans will have no one to blame but themselves and the economy.

Best and worst NFL preseason Week 3 bets

NFL bettors have had two weeks to evaluate the depth of teams. Now it’s time to get a good look at the starters, who should see a significant amount of playing time in Week 3.

Heading into the third slate of tune-up tilts we take a look at the best and worst bets in Week 3 of the preseason, digging all the way back to 1995. This is the one week that resembles the regular season the most because the starters generally play into at least the third quarter.

Records from Week 3 of the preseason over the past 16 years.

      BEST WEEK 3 PRESEASON BETS

New York Jets (13-3 SU, 11-4-1 ATS)

The Jets have been outstanding in Week 3 of the preseason since 1995, but haven’t been able to get the offense going this year. New York has scored just nine points in its first two preseason contests and is 0-2 SU (straight up) and ATS (against the spread). Oddsmakers still have the Jets as 2.5-point home favorites over the Panthers on Sunday.

Seattle Seahawks (11-5 SU, 12-3-1 ATS)

The Seahawks are coming off a 30-10 victory over the Broncos last week and are 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS this preseason. Seattle has put up 57 points in its first two preseason games and enters Friday’s contest in Kansas City as 1-point faves.

Jacksonville Jaguars (11-5 SU, 12-4 ATS)

The Jaguars have pulled out two slim victories over the Giants and Saints this preseason. Jacksonville is 1-1 ATS and is a 7-point dog in Baltimore on Thursday.

      WORST WEEK 3 PRESEASON BETS

New York Giants (2-14 SU, 3-12-1 ATS)

The Giants have been the worst SU team in Week 3 of the preseason since 1995, with their last victory coming way back in 2006 over the Jets. New York is 1-1 SU and 2-0 ATS this preseason campaign. The Giants are 3-point favorites over the visiting Bears on Friday.

Kansas City Chiefs (3-13 SU, 3-12-1 ATS)

The Chiefs are seeking their first victory in Week 3 of the preseason since 2006 when they welcome the Seahawks. Kansas City is 1-1 SU and ATS this preseason after falling to the Rams, 31-17, in Week 2.

Chicago Bears (4-12 SU, 4-12 ATS)

The Bears responded with a 33-31 victory over the Redskins in Week 2 after getting pummeled by the Broncos, 31-3, in their preseason opener. Chicago is 1-1 ATS and enters as 3-point underdogs against the G-Men.

What bettors need to know: Week 3 preseason (Friday)

Friday night holds six preseason games in the NFL. We give you the quick betting rundown on all of them.

        Eagles vs. Browns (-4.5, 37.5)

Rookie Nick Foles will get his first NFL start for the Eagles with Michael Vick sidelined with a rib injury. Foles has four TDs to just one interception so far. Philly is 2-0 and 1-0-1 ATS in the preseason, but Andy Reid wasn't happy with the defense last game, as you may have seen on YouTube.

The Browns are 2-0 straight up and ATS this preseason, despite a rookie QB (Brandon Weeden) in the starting role. They've had some injuries on defense but linebacker D'Qwell Jackson, the Browns' top defensive player, says he's healthy and was making waves at practice this week.

        Falcons at Dolphins (+3, 41.5)

A couple of fights broke out at Monday's practice this week in Atlanta. Perhaps because the team is 0-2 SU and ATS so far and poor defensive play has allowed the over to cash twice. The O-line has some question marks and the coaching staff could be holding back with its first stringers to ensure everyone stays healthy.

The Dolphins have lost and failed to cover in their first two preseason games. Coaches admit they've neglected the running game as they try to install the new West Coast offense with rookie QB Ryan Tannehill in the preseason and they intend to run a more balanced attack Friday. Problems abound on this team though, especially with talent. The Chad Johnson situation hasn't helped.

New England at Tampa Bay (+6.5, 44)

Bill Belichick held out a dozen players for Monday's game against Philly earlier this week, mostly veterans including Tom Brady. He wanted them healthy for this week's joint practices and game with Tampa Bay. Sounds like the Pats are more concerned with evaluation than winning right now and they are 0-2 ATS.

Two unders for the Bucs so far in preseason play with just 27 points through two games. The Bucs have position battles happening all over the field and new coach Greg Schiano is settling in. Schiano said he wants his team to be more physical against the Pats so thinking we might see the first team defense in a bit longer Friday.

        Chargers at Minnesota (-3, 43)

The Chargers say they're getting more confident on offense each day. They showed that in last week's convincing 36-14 win over the Bills. Adrian Peterson will reportedly dress and participate in warmups so he could surprise us and see some playing time.

Injuries have hit the Chargers with the worst coming to receiver Vincent Brown, who broke his ankle this week. A bunch of players on the Chargers O-line are also banged up including veteran center Nick Hardwick. The first team got about 20 snaps last week and Norv Turner says they'll see more Friday.

        Bears at Giants (-3, 41.5)

The Bears defense has been pathetic so far, allowing 31 points in each of its two preseason outings. Chicago has three starters injured on defense right now though and it doesn't seem too upset by the losses.

The Giants are focused on improving their running game as a carry-over from last season. They proved that in their game against the Jets last week when they ran 32 times for just 58 yards. With a lot of running and short gains, the clock keeps running. No surprise they easily played under the total against the Jets.

Seattle at Kansas City (+3, 42)

The Seahawks will start rookie QB Russell Wilson for this game to see what he can do against Kansas City's first-team offense. Wilson has tossed three touchdowns and leads the Seahawks in rushing but he's done it all against the opposition's backups so far.

The suspension to LB Tamba Hali for the first game of the season rocked the Chiefs this week. They were already coming in this week on a low note after an ugly loss to the Rams. They have a battle going for the backup QB spot so it remains to be seen how much playing time Matt Cassel will see.

                Week 9

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Canadian Bacon: B.C. Lions at Winnipeg Blue Bombers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

British Columbia at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (+5.5, 49)

                THE MATCHUP:
The Lions beat the Blue Bombers 33-16 in the first game of the season and easily covered the 8-point spread. B.C. now comes in on a three-game winning streak while Winnipeg has been just plain streaky lately.

THE LINE: The way B.C. has been playing, don't be surprised if this line moves up from 5.5 points as game time approaches. The total has dropped a point to 49, which means bettors have noticed the way the Lions' defense is performing.

B.C.: The Lions offense is fun to watch but it's the defense that has stolen the show lately. The D has now gone over 180 minutes without allowing a touchdown - the main reason B.C. has won and covered in its last three games. The Lions have also played under the total in their past five games. The team leads the league with +8 turnover margin and intercepted Saskatchewan three times last week. Meanwhile, the offense is averaging over 400 yards a game.

WINNIPEG: It's a little disturbing just how bad the Bombers defense has gotten compared to last year's 'Swaggerville' performance. Their numbers are pretty close to Hamilton's - the worst defensive team in the league - with 437 yards against per game. They have the most giveaways of any team with 20 this season, a terrible number heading in against a team like B.C. There may be some hope on offense suddenly, though. QB Joey Elliott earned CFL player of the week honors in his first CFL start last week.

                BETTING NOTES:
Under is 10-1 in Lions last 11 road games.
Under is 12-3 in the last 15 meetings.
Blue Bombers are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games as a home underdog of 3.5-10.0.
Blue Bombers are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. win.
Blue Bombers are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 games following a S.U. win.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                            STREAKING

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay Rays (10-7, 3.57)

Moore turned in another solid outing Sunday against the Angels, allowing two earned runs over 6 1/3 innings pitched. The rookie is 4-0 over his last five starts and hasn’t surrendered more than two runs in a game since July 7. He tries to keep the momentum going against the A’s on Friday.

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (6-9, 4.20)

Kendrick allowed three hits over eight scoreless innings against the Brewers on Sunday to pick up his sixth win of the season. The righty has posted back-to-back wins and hasn’t allowed a run in his last 15 innings pitched. He draws the Nationals next.

                            SLUMPING

Ben Sheets, Atlanta Braves (4-3, 3.07)

Sheets allowed six runs on four hits over six innings Saturday against the Dodgers to fall to 4-3 on the year after a red-hot start. The veteran righty has suffered back-to-back losses after blazing out of the gates with a 4-1 record. He takes the hill in San Francisco in his next start.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (10-7, 2.85)

Vogelsong lasted just three innings in Sunday's 7-1 loss to the Padres. The right-hander also got rocked for eight runs in 2 2/3 innings in his previous start against Washington. Vogelsong has just one quality start in his last three turns after running off 16 consecutive quality outings from May 3 to July 29. He gets the Braves at the friendly confines of AT&T Park on Friday.

                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Friday betting tips: Winds help hitters at Wrigley today

                              WEATHER TO WATCH

According to weather underground, the wind should be blowing straight out to left field at Wrigley in Chicago today. Oddsmakers have the Cubs favored at -155 but as per normal, they will hold off on posting a total for this game. Keep an eye out to get it early. It’s likely to go up after its release.

                              WHO'S HOT?

The B.C. Lions. They have won and covered their last three games and their defense hasn’t given up a touchdown in over 180 minutes. They’re 5.5-point favorites at Winnipeg tonight.

                              WHO'S NOT?

Red Sox pitching staff. Boston has given up 30 runs in its past four games, all of which it lost straight up and on the runline. The Sox are 13-21 in his absence with their designated hitters going 31 of 130 (.238) with seven RBIs and no home runs.

                              KEY STAT

11-23. That was the Blue Jays’ record without slugger Jose Bautista in the lineup due to a wrist injury. He returns tonight for Toronto.

                              GAME OF THE DAY

Philadelphia Eagles at Cleveland Browns (-4, 37)

                              INJURY THAT SHOULDN'T BE OVERLOOKED

It sounds like the Red Sox’ David Ortiz will be activated off the DL today after being out since July 17 with an Achilles heel injury.

                              NOTABLE QUOTABLE

Indianapolis Colts owner Tweeted this last night:
SERIOUS TRADE WINDS Swirling! We're talking given up high driaft pick for serious Vet/Starter!.. these deals often crumble n don't reach completion

                              BETTING NEWS AND NOTES

According to the Detroit News: "Most Valuable Player candidate Miguel Cabrera left the Tigers game in the top of the second inning with a sore right ankle. The Tigers said his status is considered day to day."

Sportsbooks didn’t have a line out for the Angels-Tigers game as of Friday morning. We have the early overnight line though and it’s set with the Angels as slight -115 road dogs, courtesy of The Sports Club. The total was recommended at 9 with Greinke and Porcello on the mound.

Rookie quarterback Nick Foles will get the start tonight for the Philadelphia Eagles in Cleveland. Trent Edwards will likely come on in the second quarter, though. Michael Vick won't play again in the preseason due to a rib injury but should be ready for Week 1.
