    Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

-- Last pitcher to hit a walk-off home run? San Diego's Craig Lefferts, way back in 1986.

-- Brewers/Phillies have 10 walkoff losses this year, most in the majors.

-- Over its last 16 games, Oriole bullpen has a spiffy 1.56 ERA.

-- Zack Greinke allowed 4+ runs in his last four starts, first time in his big league career he's allowed 4+ runs four starts in a row.

-- Colorado Rockies are truly a regional franchise; 14 radio stations in the state of Wyoming are part of the Rockies' radio network.

-- Raiders have had four head coaches in last five years; Steelers have had three head coaches.....since 1969.

    ************

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a summer weekend.....

    13) Indianapolis Colt fans have to be pleased with what they've seen from Andrew Luck so far this summer; Jet fans, on the other hand? Not so much.

Gang Green looked dismal in getting spanked by Giants in the Swamp Bowl Saturday night. Would expect the Jets to put forth a strong effort in their game this week, against Carolina Sunday night.

    12) That said, if you wager on exhibition football, you open yourself up to horrendous things happening. Case in point, the Oakland-Arizona game this week, which was a good spot to play the Cardinals.

Problem is, the guys on the field at the end of the game are guys who will be working at Jiffy Lube or UPS or behind your local bar next week. Arizona fumbled for an Oakland TD, then another fumble set up the last Raider FG, which covered the 6-point spread. Oakland's backup QBs are really bad, but the ball takes odd bounces in the 4th quarter in August.

    11) Seattle pays Tarvaris Jackson $4M a year, but won't use him during preseason games, because they'd like to trade him and they don't want him getting hurt. Not sure who needs a QB right now, other than the Cardinals, but doubt Jackson would be traded within the division.

    10) Only time I ever saw Eldrick Woods golf in person was at the BC Open in Endicott, outside Binghamton, about two hours from here; feel bad that they lost their spot on PGA tour-- they've got a Senior Tour event now. Weird thing that it was a golf course without a driving range. Had lot of fun going there for several years, though. Good place.

    9) The actor who plays Ron Washington in Moneyball is on TNT's drama Political Animals, playing Sigourney Weaver's Chief-of-Staff.

    8) Arizona Cardinals have a rookie from Presbyterian named Justin Bethel who has already blocked two kicks and a punt in his first three exhibition games. He also jumped offsides on another FG attempt, but he appears to have great instincts and quickness, stuff you can't teach.

    7) West Virginia hired former star player Da'Sean Butler as a grad assistant for this season. Butler was a great college player, but blew out his ACL in the 2010 Final Four and has had three operations since. He'll use this year to rehab the knee and hopefully get a shot at an NBA job for 2013-14.

    6) Washington Huskies hired Western Washington coach Brad Jackson as an assistant coach. Jackson's Vikings won the Division II national title last year. Coaching carousel never seems to stop, at the assistant level.

    5) Is it possible that only one of the 25 players on the Astros' active roster (Juan Francisco) makes more than $750,000 a year? Talk about cutting financial corners. Hope they lowered ticket prices to watch what amounts to a minor league team play. Somehow, I doubt it.

    4) Chargers' WR Vincent Brown made a terrific catch for the first San Diego TD against the Cowboys Saturday, but he also broke his left ankle on the play and will miss half the season. Too bad, he'a very good player.

    3) What do the Redskins do if Kirk Cousins keeps playing really well and top draft pick Robert Griffin III keeps struggling? Skins paid a huge price to draft RGIII, so you know he's starting the season as #1 QB, but its a performance-based business, and people are very, very fickle.

I mean, the fact that Washington drafted two QB's tells you something, no?

    2) NFL is cheaping out on some key issues; I read this weekend that this whole refereeing fiasco may be over $3.2M, or $100,000 per team. Good God almighty, thats Christmas party money for an NFL team. Just give in, give the refs what they want, and protect your game and your players.

I've heard enough BS in the last year about player safety, but then they go and freeze out the people most responsible for protecting the players.

    1) And one other thing, while I'm ranting here. Every NFL team should dress three QB's for every game, even if #3 is only activated in case of an emergency. Houston lost its QB early in a game LY, then wouldn't try to pass the ball at all, afraid that the #2 guy would get hurt and they'd be screwed without a QB. It cripples the quality of the game, that's worth a few extra bucks, in my opinion.

What bettors need to know: Eagles at Patriots

Philadelphia Eagles at New England Patriots (-1, 40.5)

There’s only one game on the NFL schedule to satisfy bettors on Monday night, but it’s an interesting preseason matchup.

The Eagles prevailed 24-23 over the Steelers in their preseason opener and travel to Foxborough for a date with the Patriots, who also won their first preseason game over the Saints.

Nnamdi Asomugha violently collided with fellow defensive back Nate Allen earlier this week, but the 29-year-old corner cleared concussion tests and head coach Andy Reid fully intends to play him Monday. Reid has publicly stated his starters will play into the third quarter against the Patriots.

The signing of Olympic sprinter Jeff Demps has dominated the headlines in New England this week. The former Florida running back is fresh off a silver-medal performance at the London Games and will no doubt be a threat when returning kicks for the Patriots this season. However, he won’t have an impact Monday as he’s not eligible to play until the team’s third preseason game Aug. 24.

New England’s projected first-string running back Stevan Ridley appeared to suffer a right knee injury during Thursday’s practice and is questionable against the Eagles. Expect Shane Vereen, Danny Woodhead and Brandon Bolden to get the majority of the carries if Ridley can't play.

Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

Freddy Garcia, New York Yankees (7-5, 4.68 ERA)

Garcia pitched the Yankees past Texas on Wednesday, striking out six and allowing just two runs over 6 2/3 innings. Garcia's been rolling ever since returning to the Yankee rotation, allowing three or fewer runs in eight of nine starts. He toes the rubber in Chicago against the White Sox on Monday

Miguel Gonzalez, Baltimore Orioles (5-2, 3.38 ERA)

Gonzalez pitched six strong innings Wednesday, holding the Red Sox to two runs on six hits to earn his fifth win. The righty has turned in four consecutive quality starts and has been a pleasant surprise for the Orioles down the stretch. He has a tough road start in Texas next time out.

                SLUMPING

Edinson Volquez, San Diego Padres (7-9, 4.31 ERA)

Volquez surrendered six runs and only lasted 3 2/3 innings during Wednesday's 6-1 loss to the Braves. The right-hander has thrown just 13 2/3innings over his last four starts, allowing at least four runs in each of those outings. He tries to turn things around at home against the Pirates.

Ubaldo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians (9-12, 5.62 ERA)

Jimenez was lit up for eight earned runs in Tuesday's loss to the Angels. The former 19-game winner has taken the loss in three of his last four starts and allowed 17 earned runs over his last three outings. He takes the hill in Seattle on Monday.

Rounding the bases: The best bets in the bigs
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in major league baseball.

                  Hot team: Seattle Mariners
                  Last week: 5-1
                  Season record: 58-64
Upcoming schedule: vs. Indians, at White Sox

Skinny: Felix Hernandez’s perfect game against the Rays on Wednesday helped lead the Mariners to a 5-1 record last week. Seattle took two of three from Tampa and then completed a three-game sweep of the Twins. The Mariners welcome the ice-cold Indians next.

                  Cold team: Cleveland Indians
                  Last week: 1-5
                  Season record: 54-67
Upcoming schedule: at Mariners, vs. Yankees

Skinny: The Indians dropped two of three to the Angels and suffered a three-game sweep at the hands of the A’s last week. Cleveland has just four wins in its last 22 contests heading into a three-game series with Seattle on Monday.

                  Over team: Chicago Cubs
                  Last week: 7-0
                  Season O/U record: 56-60-4
Upcoming schedule: at Brewers, vs. Rockies

Skinny: The Cubs went over the total in all seven games last week. Chicago batters drove in at least seven runs in each of the team’s three victories, but a four-game set against the high-powered Cincinnati Reds really helped lift the Cubs over the total for bettors.

                  Under team: Atlanta Braves
                  Last week: 7-0
                  Season O/U record: 53-63-5
Upcoming schedule: at Nationals, at Giants

Skinny: Bettors who love the under have been riding the Braves all season long. Atlanta pitchers were lights out again last week, hurling two shutouts and holding Padres hitters to just five runs total in the four-game set.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
What bettors need to know: Giants at Dodgers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Dodgers (-154, 6)

The battle for first place in the National League West continues when the Giants visit Los Angeles for a three-game set. The Dodgers stand atop the division by one half-game after completing a 7-3 road trip, while San Francisco has won five of its last eight games. Los Angeles, which leads the season series 5-4, swept the Giants in three games in San Francisco last month. Dodgers shortstop Luis Cruz is swinging a hot bat after going 6-for-11 with two homers over the weekend in Atlanta. He left Sunday’s game in the seventh with a leg cramp, but he’s expected to be available for Monday’s opener.

A successful series in Los Angeles would help the Giants to put the Melky Cabrera suspension behind them. Gregor Blanco is expected to get most of the starts in left field with Cabrera out, but Justin Christian started the last two games. Christian has failed to produce, however, with one hit in his last 28 at-bats. The Dodgers’ lineup doesn’t have many holes after the additions of Shane Victorino and Hanley Ramirez, but first base remains a problem. Juan Rivera is batting .239 with one hit in his past 13 at-bats, and James Loney is hitting .255 with four home runs. The Dodgers are hoping Loney's two homers last week are a sign of things to come.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, ESPN2, CSNBA (San Francisco), PRIME (Los Angeles), ESPN3.com

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants LH Madison Bumgarner (13-7, 2.97 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Clayton Kershaw (11-6, 2.90)

Bumgarner threw his first complete game of the season Tuesday against the Nationals, allowing one run on five hits. It was the seventh consecutive quality outing for the lefty, who is 3-2 with a 2.25 ERA during that stretch. He’s 5-6 with a 4.06 ERA in his 13 road starts this season, and he’s 4-2 with a 3.62 ERA in seven career starts against Los Angeles.

Kershaw is 4-0 with a 1.78 ERA in his last four turns, including Wednesday against the Pirates when he gave up three runs with no walks over eight innings. The lefty is 1-2 with a 1.57 ERA in three starts against the Giants this season and is 7-3 with a 1.32 ERA in 15 career games (14 starts) against San Francisco.

                    TRENDS

*Dodgers are 5-0 in their last five games vs. a left-handed starter.
*Giants are 0-4 in Bumgarner’s last four starts as an underdog.
*Over is 6-0 in Giants’ last six games vs. a left-handed starter.
*Under is 6-0 in Kershaw’s last six starts vs. Giants.

                    WALK-OFFS

                    1. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly will return Monday after serving a two-game suspension for excessive arguing Thursday in Pittsburgh.

                    2. Giants C Buster Posey has hit safely in 28 of his last 33 games, batting .424 (50-for-118) with nine home runs, 34 RBIs and 21 walks.

                    3. The Dodgers optioned INF-OF Elian Herrera to Triple-A Albuquerque and activated LHP Scott Elbert from the 15-day disabled list.
