    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Tommy John had Tommy John surgery at age 31; he missed the 1975 season, then came back at age 33 and threw 207-220-213-276-265 innings over the next five seasons. He threw 170+ innings at age 45.

-- Umpire Paul Emmel had the plate in the Bronx Friday; over is 22-1 in his games behind the plate this season.

-- Indianapolis Colts have 90 players in camp; 55 of them weren't on the team last season.

-- Former Ravens' coach Brian Billick is very good as a TV analyst.

-- Tennessee Titans are trying to make Jake Locker their starting QB, but his lack of accuracy is an issue. 4-11 for 21 yards ain't getting it done.

-- The analyst for the Raider-Cardinal exhibition game sounds a lot like the former governor of Minnesota, Jesse Ventura.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

    13) My parents were married 48 years; to the best of my knowledge, they never head-butted each other. Chad85Johnson and his lovely bride got divorced after 41 blissful days of wedlock, which ended after a head butt that followed an argument over a receipt for a box of condoms. The world can be a strange place these days.

    12) The Iowa State Fair has 57 different foods listed as being served “on a stick”. Deep-fried butter appears to be this year’s favorite. Yikes.

    11) Kansas City Chiefs’ backup QB is Brady Quinn, who was a big star at Notre Dame; he backs up Matt Cassel, who never started a game at USC, but is clearly a better pro than Quinn. Think Lane Kiffin uses that one when he’s out recruiting quarterbacks?

    10) Tim Tebow had six rushing TD’s last year. So did Mark Sanchez.

    9) St Louis Rams are 37-91 since they stupidly released Kurt Warner; Arizona Cardinals are 13-19 since Warner retired. Both franchises were awful when Warner became their starting QB. Only three years until #13 gets inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

    8) Missouri hoop coach Frank Haith got tossed out of a game in Holland; Kansas State coach Bruce Weber got bounced from a game in Brazil, as American college teams are having hard time with physical play on some of their foreign trips. Older opponents, refs who let the boys play, especially the home boys, and chaos ensues.

    7) Tarvaris Jackson was Seattle’s starting QB last year, but they spent $13M to bring Packer backup Matt Flynn to town, and drafted Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson, so you figure Jackson is on thin ice to begin with.

Flynn/Wilson split time in the preseason opener, and are expected to do the same this week. Jackson’s days in the Pacific Northwest are numbered, and its not a big number.

    6) Red Sox have a $175M payroll and a sub-.500 record; everyone on the team seems to hate each other. How do they bring Bobby Valentine back as manager in 2013? Based on what?

    5) Brett Favre's first game as an offensive coordinator for a high school team in Mississippi ended with Favre's team winning 64-6- they had 41 at halftime. Wonder if he enjoys coaching.

    4) Why is it that professional athletes (ARod-Kobe-Bynum) are going to Germany for medical care? Doctors don’t do those procedures here? Why not? Do teams have a say in whether they go or not?

    3) Yahoo! Sports reported Thursday that Rosenhaus Sports VP Danny Martoe is seeking $1 million in "commissions and compensatory damages," according to a filing with the NFL Players Association.

Martoe accuses the Rosenhaus brothers of fraudulently inducing him to work for the firm. Martoe said in the filing that he was consistently given both written and verbal assurances by the Rosenhaus brothers that they would fully compensate him for his efforts.

    2) When NFL teams/media discuss red zone efficiency, their definitive stat should be points per possession, not TD percentage.

    1) I’m thinking that if you get married, then you have to stay married for at least 90 days, unless your new spouse turns out to be a transsexual or a murderer; that doesn’t seem unreasonable. I’m just sayin’…..

NASCAR betting: Pure Michigan 400 preview

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has had a frustrating few weeks. After climbing to the top of the point standings, Earnhardt finished outside the lead lap at Watkins Glen and Pocono; this after finishing on the lead lap in the season’s first 20 races.

Last week at the Glen Earnhardt was on his way to a top 10 finish, something that would have been quite an accomplishment considering his record on road courses, but a late race mistake cost him; he came home off the lead lap and out of the points lead after only two weeks.

Earnhardt and the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series head back for the second stop of the season at Michigan International Speedway for Sunday’s Pure Michigan 400. For Earnhardt it’s an excellent chance to overcome the past weeks frustrations.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. celebrated his first win in 143 races at Michigan in June.
In June Earnhardt broke a four year, 143 race winless streak charging to victory here. Earnhardt wants to repeat that victory lane trip and plans to be aggressive Sunday.

“The track has always been fun for me. Even had I not won any races there, it’s just a really fun track,” said Earnhardt. “That’s the kind of race track you hope and pray to build. I think over time the surface will age and we’ll get back to widening up the surface quite a bit.”

With a Chase berth all but locked up, Earnhardt now wants to add race wins to gather the all important bonus points.

“On the way to getting that done, you want to win more races and we were really conservative all year long,” he said. “We feel like that in the position we are in now, we can gamble a lot more.”

Like Earnhardt, Denny Hamlin had a less than memorable finish at the Glen last week. Unlike Earnhardt, Hamlin is far from locked into the Chase. He’s tenth in the standings barely clinging to a spot in the Chase. But Hamlin has won two of the last five races here. In last year’s race, Hamlin suffered mechanical woes that left him laps down and he was caught up in a crash in the June race and will be looking for redemption this week. If Hamlin and his Joe Gibbs team can keep it together, Hamlin should shine Sunday.

Hamlin’s teammate at JGR, Kyle Busch was dominant for most of the race last week at the Glen. He wasn’t able to seal the deal however and lost in the closing laps. He’s the defending winner of this race, but he too had a terrible finish here in June. Busch however is looking to overcome that past adversity and could do so Sunday.

Tony Stewart is also coming off a rotten finish at the Glen. He was second here in June and could easily break a winless streak at Michigan dating back to 2000 Sunday.

Keep an eye on: Matt Kenseth and his Roush-Fenway teammate Greg Biffle finished third and fourth here in June. Once a force here, Fords have not won at Michigan since 2008. Any one of Jack Roush’s cars, including Carl Edwards, could take the checkered flag.

Party Crasher: Michigan is one of five active tracks that Jimmie Johnson has yet to win at (the others are Watkins Glen, Chicagoland, Homestead and Kentucky). Johnson was second in this race last year and fifth in June. With the momentum he and his Hendrick Motorsports team has been on of late, it would be no surprise if Johnson checks MIS off his winless record Sunday.

“We had a really strong car there (at the June race) and I’m excited to go back,” Johnson said. “Late in the race I was running down the leaders and I blistered a right rear tire. But, I understand that a great tire test took place at the track recently and they didn’t see any issues. So I feel like things are fixed and I’m looking forward to going back because I know we’re going to be strong. The way we’ve been running on the ovals and also with our performance at Michigan in the spring, even though we blistered a tire, I really feel like I can win there and make that list one shorter for the tracks we haven’t won on. I really feel this is our best chance ever.”

Bottom Line: 66 of 86 races have been won from a top-10 starting position, including 46 from the first four spots.

The deepest in the field a race winner has started was 32nd, by Mark Martin in the June race of 2009.

What Bettors Need to Know: Saturday's NFL preseason action

New York Giants at New York Jets (-1, 36.5)

The Giants haven’t even taken the field versus their Big Apple rivals and already they’re sick of hearing about the Jets – namely QB Tim Tebow. That doesn’t mean the G-Men aren't taking the Jets second-stringer seriously. In fact, the Giants practiced against the Wildcat offense this week, using third-string QB Ryan Perrilloux as a Tebow clone.

The other New York team is planning to play their starters the entire first half Saturday. Jets head coach Rex Ryan leaked his rotation while also addressing the lack of bodies at receiver for Week 2 of the preseason. Wideouts Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley will not play and Jordan White is doubtful with knee issues.

Kansas City Chiefs at St. Louis Rams (+1, 36.5)

New Rams coach Jeff Fisher is keeping it simple in the preseason and told the media his gameplan for Week 2 is the same as Week 1. Fisher says his starters will go a little deeper into the game than they did in a 38-3 beating by the Indianapolis Colts in the preseason opener.

Another new head coach, Romeo Crennel, was pleased with his team’s performance in the exhibition opener, especially the effort from running backs Peyton Hillis and Jamaal Charles, who is returning from a knee injury. Expect backups Brady Quinn and Ricky Stanzi to get the bulk of the action as the Chiefs are trying to hammer down a true No. 2 QB.

Washington Redskins at Chicago Bears (-1, 37)

Football fans in D.C. had to like what they saw from rookie QB Robert Griffen III during his limited action in Week 1 of the preseason. Much of that success can fall on head coach Mike Shanahan, who is rumored to have tinkered with the offense to mimic Griffen’s playbook at Baylor. Another rookie, RB Alfred Morris, could also get the start Saturday with so many injuries in the Redskins’ backfield.

The Bears looked terrible in their preseason debut, getting licked 31-3 by the Denver Broncos. Starting QB Jay Cutler sat out that Week 1 preseason tilt and is expected to get the nod in Week 2. Cutler was preoccupied after his girlfriend Kristin Cavallari recently gave birth to the couple’s first child and was told he was sitting during warm-ups last Thursday.

San Francisco 49ers at Houston Texans (-3, 36.5)

The Niners are expected to open up the playbook on offense Saturday. San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh has been impressed with the quick connection between QB Alex Smith and his new targets. The 49ers are expected to debut WR Mario Manningham and RB Frank Gore after the two sat out last week’s tune-up versus the Minnesota Vikings.

The Texans unleashed hell against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 of the preseason, collecting eight sacks for 64 yards lost. Houston will turn its attention to offense versus the Niners in Week 2, with star WR Andre Johnson expected to suit up after sitting out the exhibition opener.

Seattle Seahawks at Denver Broncos (-1, 37.5)

The Seahawks have whittled their QB choices down to two, with rumors spreading that veteran pivot Tarvaris Jackson is on the trade block. That means that Russell Wilson and Matt Flynn are duking it out for the top job under center. Those two will have a brand new toy to play with Saturday when veteran WR Terrell Owens makes his Seattle debut.

The Broncos looked really good in their first run-through of the preseason. Denver demolished the Bears and got a good look at QB Peyton Manning, who is expected to play the entire first half Saturday. Bettors should expect the rest of the starters to put in those minutes as well with the Broncos hoping to get Manning comfortable with his new team.

Dallas Cowboys at San Diego Chargers (-3, 37)

The Cowboys' offseason woes continued this week when Pro Bowl tight end Jason Witten suffered a spleen injury and could be lost for the first part of the regular season. Dallas has been bitten hard by the injury bug this offseason. That hasn’t scared head coach Jason Garrett from playing Tony Romo more in Week 2. The QB is expected to play more than his 11 snaps from Week 1’s 3-0 win over the Oakland Raiders.

San Diego suffered a scare in Week 1 of the exhibition schedule after running back Ryan Matthews left the game with a broken collarbone. The Bolts will lean on RB Ronnie Brown to fill that hole while Matthews recovers. He rushed for just eight yards on three carries in the win over the Green Bay Packers last Thursday.

Canadian Bacon: Toronto Argonauts at Calgary Stampeders
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toronto Argonauts at Calgary Stampeders (-4.5, 55)

So much for a relaxing bye week for the Argos. Toronto released the CFL’s top rusher Cory Boyd, with rumors of on and off-field issues reaching the breaking point.

The Argonauts offense, which is averaging just 23 points per game, hit a new low in Week 6, losing 18-9 to the B.C. Lions while mustering only 215 yards passing and 37 yards on the ground. Quarterback Ricky Ray threw three interceptions and the departed Boyd ran for just 23 yards.

Head coach Scott Milanovich believes the problem is rooted in the offensive line, which underwent a shake-up heading into Saturday’s game. Left tackle Wayne Smith is moving to guard and 6-foot-7 beast Tony Washington is stepping into protect Ray’s blindside.

“Absolutely (the offensive line) can take some blame, but there is blame to be spread around, including me,” Milanovich told the media. “Everybody has to be accountable.”

The Stampeders, who rank third among CFL defenses, will put that new o-line mixture to the test this weekend. Calgary is coming off a solid 31-20 win over Hamilton in Week 7 but has struggled with Toronto in the past.

The Stamps have lost four straight (0-4 ATS) to Toronto after posting six wins in a row over the Argos going back to 2007. One of those losses came in a 39-36 Toronto victory off a last-second field goal back in early July.

"We need to be better prepared. That's been my theme all week long," Calgary head coach John Hufnagel told reporters. "Even though we did some unbelievably hard things well in the game… there were several other plays where we were knuckleheads."

            Trends:

            * Argonauts are 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
            * Under is 5-0 in the last five meetings in Calgary.
            * Argonauts are 1-5 ATS in their last six meetings in Calgary.

                      Saturday, August 18

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (13-6, 2.91 ERA)

Two wins is hardly a streak but Hamels has been invisible over his last two starts, pitching back-to-back complete game shutouts. He’s allowed only 12 hits and struck out 11 batters in that span. He’s just the third Phillies pitcher to toss back-to-back shutouts in the past 20 years.

Alex Cobb, Tampa Bay Rays (7-8, 4.08 ERA)

Cobb is helping the Rays make a run at the postseason with his recent performances. The right-hander has won three straight starts, posting a 1.29 ERA in that stretch. In his most recent outing, Cobb gave up one run on four hits over seven innings, his fourth straight quality start.

                      Slumping

Carlos Villanueva, Toronto Blue Jays (6-2, 3.12 ERA)

Villanueva is 0-2 in his last three starts but isn’t pitching poorly. He has a 3.79 ERA in that span and is coming off a solid effort in which he allowed just one run on five hits over seven innings, taking a no-decision against the White Sox.

Jordan Lyles, Houston Astros (2-9, 5.47 ERA)

Lyles hasn’t earned a “W” since late June and is 0-5 in his last eight starts. The Astros young righty has been better in his previous two starts, giving up just four runs on 11 hits over 14 innings. He’s struck out 11 batters in those two starts as well.
