    Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Steelers' LB LaMarr Woodley donated $60,000 to cover participation fees for every student-athlete in Saginaw public schools. We hear so many bad things about athletes. Great to hear stuff like this!!!!

-- Eastern Michigan basketball coach Rob Murphy wanted to quit to be a scout with the Orlando Magic, but the $210K buyout was too much, so he stays at EMU. That sounds like a terrific working arrangement.

-- Mets' Matt Harvey had a 5-pitch inning against the Reds, think it was the 7th, facing five hitters. Don't see that a lot.

-- Chipper Jones had two homers on Chipper Jones Bobblehead Night.

-- Dan Straily got his first big league when it mattered most, on last game of an Oakland road trip during a pennant race. He beat the Royals, 3-0.

-- San Diego Padres sold for $800M this week, so if you ever want to own a big league ballclub, better start saving your pennies.

    **********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here.........

    13) If you ever meet a guy named Nigel Richards, don’t play Scrabble with him for money; guy just won his third straight (and 4th overall) National Scrabble Championship. I had no idea there was such a thing.

    12) Also had no idea Nike Chairman Phil Knight is in his 70’s; he turns 80 on February 24, 2018. To thank him for his support of college basketball, 16 Nike-affiliated college hoop teams have committed to play in a 16-team tournament in November, 2017 in Portland, OR.

Heavy hitters, too; Kentucky-Michigan State-Duke are just three of the teams. This is how far in advance bigtime teams schedule their preseason tournaments, so its not that unusual to be booked this early, especially considering the heavyweight nature of this one-time event.

    11) Indiana Hoosiers had 14 scholarship basketball players, but you can only have 13; one of their incoming freshmen suddenly didn’t meet the academic standards, so he’s off to either prep school or another college. All of which means Indiana is loaded this year. Feel bad for the kid, but if he’s good enough to play at IU, he’ll land somewhere good.

    10) From 2009-11, Jake Peavy made 16-17-18 starts, or 51 out of a possible 105 (48.6%), not very durable. All of a sudden, in this, his walk year, Peavy has made 23 starts and averaged just over seven innings per start. In his last seven outings, the formerly brittle Peavy has thrown 115-120-122-121-114-104-124 pitches. Sounds like a salary drive to me.

    9) Cowboy TE Jason Witten has a lacerated spleen, and could miss the start of the season. I’m no doctor, but I think a lacerated spleen is more serious than it sounds. NFL players don’t wear enough pads around their hips/ribs.

    8) St Louis Cardinals are 11-20 in 1-run games, 5-13 in 2-run games, 47-21 in games decided by 3+ runs. Sounds like a team that has underachieved, but is ready to make a serious run down the stretch, just like LY.

    7) Miami Marlins have scored zero or one run in 10 of Josh Johnson’s 23 starts.

Staff at Showtime is scrambling to come up with interesting pieces on the Marlins’ reality show, since the team itself is so depressing to watch.

    6) Felix Hernandez got 26 misses on 58 Tampa Bay swings in his perfect game Wednesday, tied for 3rd most in big leagues this season. Francisco Liriano (30) had the most on July 13 against the A’s, the first game after the All-Star break.

CC Sabathia got the Rays to miss on 27 swings June 7; Chris Sale induced 26 Tampa Bay misses May 28 and Max Scherzer got 26 misses from the Pirates May 20. Its an underrated stat, swings/misses. The less the ball’s in play, the fewer mistakes that can happen in the field.

    5) Dodgers are 12-2 in the eastern time zone this year; lot of things have broken LA’s way this season, from the new ownership group to Melky Cabrera’s suspension. Would expect Dodger Stadium to be awful crowded the rest of the season.

    4) Major league batters are hitting .255 this year, same as LY, when they had their lowest batting average since 1989. Its getting to the point where lot of teams have neither lot of power or lot of speed; takes three hits to score a run. No-hitters ain’t what they used to be.

    3) How does a major league team (Red Sox) hire a manager but not allow him to pick his own coaches? Would think this is, for the most part, a recipe for disaster.

These guys spend so much time together; they need to get along. I can see one coach who is established staying to work for different managers, but not the majority of a staff, like in Boston, especially with Francona/Valentine being such polar opposites as people. Just seems odd.

    2) Cablevision finally signed on to show NFL Network, good news for KL Wheat down there on Long Island. Time Warner is still an NFLN holdout, which would be aggravating me greatly if I didn’t have DirecTV. NFL Network is a good channel that any football fan would enjoy watching.

    1) Further proof NFL preseason is mostly bogus: Browns 35, Packers 10.

What bettors need to know: Friday's NFL preseason action

Tennessee Titans at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (-3, 37.5)

The Titans are cranking up the intensity on defense, with defensive coordinator Jerry Gray calling for a more physical and explosive attack. Tennessee lost 27-17 to the Seattle Seahawks in Week 1 of the preseason, giving up 135 yards on the ground. Veteran Matt Hasselbeck, who started versus Seattle, will come off the bench in relief of Jake Locker.

The Bucs opened the preseason with a 20-7 win over the Miami Dolphins. Running backs Doug Martin and LeGarrette Blount each scored in that game and have a nice battle to be the featured back going. Tampa Bay will try to get free-agent addition WR Vincent Jackson some action Friday after he went without a catch in the win over the Dolphins.

Miami Dolphins at Carolina Panthers (-3.5, 37)

Ryan Tannehill and Matt Moore will duke it out at QB with veteran David Garrard on the shelf. Head coach Joe Philbin still hasn’t announced a starter as of Thursday afternoon. Tannehill picked apart the Bucs second and third stringers for 167 yards and one touchdown while Moore finished 7 for 12 for 79 yards and an interception.

Panthers head coach Ron Rivera plans to play his starters the entire first half Friday night, including quarterback Cam Newton. Newton wasn’t all that sharp in a Week 1 preseason loss to the Houston Texans, going 2 for 6 for 17 yards and adding 16 yards on the ground.

Detroit Lions at Baltimore Ravens (-3, 38)

Lions coach Jim Schwartz wasn’t pleased with his team’s effort in a 19-17 loss to the Cleveland Browns in the preseason opener. Fingers are pointing at the offense as well as the defense, more specifically the lack of depth at safety. Erik Coleman and John Wendling got the nod versus the Browns after Louis Delmas and Amari Spievey were ruled out with ailments. Detroit was torched for 309 passing yards from the Browns’ sub-par QBs.

John Harbaugh could play some of his starters the entire first half Friday, hoping to get a good look at his offensive line. Baltimore’s o-line was terrible in the early going of Thursday’s preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons, leaving QB Joe Flacco to take some licks.

Buffalo Bills at Minnesota Vikings (-2.5, 37)

The Bills will be doing some ground work in Week 2 of the preseason. Buffalo’s first-team offense exclusively passed the ball during their plays in last week’s 7-6 loss to the Washington Redskins. Chan Gailey says running backs Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller will get more touches, which could kept the clock running and the scoring low.

Head coach Leslie Frazier told the media his veterans will get plenty of action during Week 2 of the preseason. The Vikings are expected to play their starters into the second quarter Friday, with veterans DT Kevin Williams, CB Antoine Winfield and DE Jared Allen back on defense and WR Percy Harvin returning on offense after sitting in the preseason opener.

Jacksonville Jaguars at New Orleans Saints (-6.5, 39.5)

With this being the Saints' third game of the preseason, thanks to the Hall of Fame Game, oddsmakers have set a big spread for Friday’s exhibition. Drew Brees only threw four passes versus the Patriots in Week 1 but should get more reps Friday. Tight end Jimmy Graham returned to practice and is expected to play in Week 2.

While the Jaguars wait on one star to show up to camp, they’ll debut another against New Orleans Friday. First-round pick WR Justin Blackmon will play in his first game and is schedule to put in about a half of action before taking a seat. Jacksonville took a 32-31 win over the New York Giants in the preseason opener, with Blaine Gabbert throwing for 62 yards and a touchdown.

Oakland Raiders at Arizona Cardinals (-4.5, 37)

The Raiders were goose-egged in their preseason opener, losing 3-0 to the Dallas Cowboys Monday. Now, they have a short turnaround to fix whatever was broken on offense, namely a rushing attack that total just 89 yards and averaging just over three yards per carry.

The Cardinals are playing in their third preseason contests of the summer and will let the starters play extensive minutes, according to head coach Jim Whisenhunt. Arizona is still on the fence about who its starting QB will be in Week 1, so Kevin Kolb and John Skelton will get plenty of snaps Friday.

Canadian Bacon: Montreal Alouettes at Edmonton Eskimos
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Montreal Alouettes at Edmonton Eskimos (-2, 52)

Edmonton is riding high after a hard-fought win over the rival Saskatchewan Roughriders last week, improving to 4-2 SU and ATS while grabbing a share of first place in the West.

The Eskimos could debut CFL leading rusher Cory Boyd Friday night. Boyd, who rumbled for 447 yards and two touchdowns before being dropped by the Toronto Argonauts, is listed as a game-time decision and would give Edmonton extra pop in the backfield. The Eskimos come into Week 8 ranked seventh in rushing with 87.3 yards per game.

“We feel that the coaches have spent a lot of quality time with Cory to get him up to speed,” Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed told the media. “We’ve asked him to do things in practice and he’s done those things well and situational-wise, we dress an extra American (in Boyd), we have to be able to justify having another American off the roster.

“It’ll probably be closer to a game-time decision.”

Boyd, who rushed for 2,500 yards the past two seasons, would be handy against the Alouettes defense, which ranks second at stuffing the run. Montreal gives up just 88.5 yards on the ground per game and held Winnipeg to 82 yards in a much-needed 36-26 win in Week 6.

The Als have had the bye week to prepare for Edmonton, which has dropped four straight meetings (0-4 ATS) to Montreal and is just 3-7 SU and ATS in its last 10 with the Alouettes going back to 2007. These teams have also met three times in Grey Cup competition over the past 10 years – 2002, 2003, 2005 – and have a great deal of respect for each other.

"They're very efficient," Reed told reporters. "This offense has been a well-oiled machine for the last 10 years."

Als quarterback Anthony Calvillo, who leads the CFL in passing with 2,001 yards heading into Friday, catches a break against the Eskimos. Edmonton’s premier pass rusher, DE Ted Laurent, will sit out with an ankle injury. Laurent has recorded at least one sack in the past five games and is tied for second in the league in QB kills.

              Trends:

              - Alouettes are 4-0 ATS in their last four meetings.
              - Over is 7-3 in the last 10 meetings in Edmonton.
              - Alouettes are 3-7 ATS in their last 10 meetings in Edmonton.

Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox (14-3, 2.60 ERA)

Sale picked up his 14th win of the season against the A’s last week and now sits second in the American League in victories on the year. The ChiSox’s ace has won three straight, posting a 3.86 ERA and collecting 24 strikeouts in that span.

Yovani Gallardo, Milwaukee Brewers (11-8, 3.78 ERA)

Gallardo is a breath of consistent air for such an inconsistent team. The Brewers righty has won three in a row, towing a 2.08 ERA in that span and working at least seven innings in each of those starts. Gallardo has put in 19 quality starts in 24 outings this season.

                        Slumping

Johan Santana, New York Mets (6-8, 4.58 ERA)

My, how the mighty have fallen. Santana hasn’t won a game since July 6, losing four straight starts in the process. The Mets veteran southpaw has been downright abused during that slide, allowing 27 runs in his last 14 innings of work.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (4-8, 4.52 ERA)

Wood is also winless since July 6, posting a 5-0 record in the six starts since. The Cubbies hurler actually pitched well in his last outing, allowing just one earned run over seven innings in a no-decision against his former club, the Reds. Wood gets another shot at Cincy Friday.

Game of the day: Rays at Angels
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tampa Bay Rays at Los Angeles Angels (-165, 7)

The Tampa Bay Rays attempt to continue their dominance of the Los Angeles Angels when the clubs meet in the second game of their four-game series at Angel Stadium on Friday. Tampa Bay has won six of the first seven meetings this season, allowing a total of eight runs - six earned. David Price, who became the first 16-game winner in the major leagues with a stellar performance in the series opener, has kept the Angels off the scoreboard over 16 innings this season.

The Rays' 7-0 win on Thursday helped lessen the pain from the previous day, when Seattle's Felix Hernandez tossed the third perfect game in four years against them. Tampa Bay, which currently occupies a wild-card spot in the American League, is seeking its fourth consecutive shutout victory at Angel Stadium. Los Angeles posted a 3-1 home win on July 26 before falling 3-0 and 2-0 over the next two days. The Angels, who have won eight of 10, trail the Rays by 2 1/2 games in the wild-card race.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, Sun Sports (Tampa Bay), FSN West (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH James Shields (10-7, 4.02 ERA) vs. Angels RH Jered Weaver (15-2, 2.22)

Shields allowed three runs - two earned - over seven innings at Minnesota on Sunday but came away with a no-decision. The 30-year-old had won his previous two starts, yielding a total of one run over 17 frames. Shields is 5-3 with a 3.01 ERA in 11 career outings against the Angels.

Weaver, who is looking to pull even with Price for the major-league wins lead, is coming off his first loss since May 13 as he gave up three runs over seven innings against Seattle on Sunday. The Cy Young Award candidate has yielded two earned runs or fewer 11 times over his last 13 starts. Weaver is 8-1 at home this year and 4-1 in seven career outings against the Rays.
