    Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Astros are 39-79; Lucas Harrell is 10-8, 3.81. NL Rookie of the Year?

-- A’s put gritty Brandon Inge on the DL (shoulder); they don’t have a competent replacement for him- this is bad news.

-- From 2003-07, Chad85Johnson averaged 92.4 catches a year, good for 1,374 yards a season, 85.9 yards a game. Highly productive, but that was five years ago. Now he's 34, unemployed and maybe unemployable as an NFL receiver. Too much drama for a marginal player.

-- Ron Palillo, who played Arnold Horshack on Welcome Back Kotter, died this week at age 63. Funny man.

-- Since 1950, three big league managers have won more games than Nats' skipper Davey Johnson, without winning a World Series:
    Al Lopez-Dusty Baker-Gene Mauch.

-- Wednesday is National Relaxation Day!!! This needs to be an official holiday. Kick back and enjoy.

    *************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: With camp underway, some NFL thoughts

    13) Over last three years, Carolina Panthers (3, all on special teams) have scored the least amount of touchdowns on defense/special teams; they’ve allowed 18. By way of contrast, Bears/Vikings lead NFL with 18 such TD’s over last three years.

    12) Hard to believe, but Jacksonville Jaguars haven’t scored a special teams TD in last three seasons; Giants-Rams haven’t scored one in last two years. Giants also have only one defensive TD the last two seasons- they have won a Super Bowl during that time, though.

    11) Houston Texans allowed 9.3 ppg less LY than in 2010; hope they gave DC Wade Phillips a raise. Part of reason is that their two games with Indy got lot simpler with Peyton Manning out of action, but Mario Williams also missed 11 games for the Texans.

    10) Arizona Cardinals ran 32 plays inside opponents’ 5-yard LY; none of them were completed passes (0-3). Detroit Lions completed eight passes inside the 5, just to Calvin Johnson.

    8) Should be noted that former Fordham Ram John Skelton was 6-2 as starting QB of the Cardinals LY. San Diego State rookie QB Lindley is getting solid reviews with the Redbirds this summer. Kevin Kolb? No solid reviews yet this month.

I hesitate to do this, but the Cardinals had some kind of a team meeting this week, after their first preseason game. They're playing Oakland at home on Friday, with Raiders on a very short week. If Arizona can't drill the Raiders in this game, you wonder about them. Sounds like they'll give an effort.

    7) Over the last two seasons, Chicago RB Matt Forte has carried ball 15 times on plays that started 5 or less yards from the goal line; he scored only one touchdown.

    6) Lot of reasons why teams improve dramatically, but the Lions scored seven defensive TD’s LY, after scoring a total of one the previous two seasons. That and a healthy Matthew Stafford spelled a huge improvement.

    5) My dad is 86; he HATES IT when teams throw the ball near the goal line. He’s old school, wants team to run the ball in.

I hesitate to tell him that the 15-1 Packers threw the ball on 24 of 29 plays inside the opponents’ 5-yard line, and scored 19 TD’s on those 29 plays. I hesitate, but I will tell him.

    4) Fantasy Football note: Atlanta WR Roddy White had 179 passes thrown his way LY, more than anyone in the NFL; new OC Dirk Koetter (former Arizona State HC) is supposed to have a more wide-open approach, so we’ll see what that means for the Falcons.

    3) Tampa Bay QB Josh Freeman threw only six INTs in 2010; he threw 22 LY, and now he has a new coach. Those facts are not unrelated.

    2) I’m still skeptical of the 49ers; they had a +28 turnover ratio LY, and didn’t allow a TD on defense/special teams- they had two special teams TD’s in Week 1. Breaks of the game aren’t always going to go their way. In the seven seasons before LY, the Niners were -54 in turnovers.

    1) Patriots are an elite team for many reasons, one of which is superior special teams. Over last two years, NE scored 13 TD’s on defense/ST’s, while allowing only two, both of which were given up by the offense. They don’t beat themselves. Plus they spy on teams.

Best NFL preseason Week 2 over/under bets

It takes a while for NFL offenses and defenses to gain traction. That’s why they have four weeks of preseason football.

Starters made a brief appearance in Week 1 and will get more run in the second set on the exhibition schedule. Here’s a look at the top over and the top under bets in Week 2 of the preseason, going back over the past 16 years.

Records from Week 2 of the preseason since 1995.

Best Week 2 preseason over bets

      Green Bay Packers (12-4 SU, 12-4 over/under)

Offense is the name of the game for the Packers in Week 2 of the preseason. Not only are the Cheeseheads the best over play since 1995, but they’re also the best ATS bet with an identical 12-4 ATS mark in that span. Green Bay is 4-0 over/under in Week 2 since Aaron Rodgers was named the No. 1 QB, however, much of that record has to do with the Packers’ porous defense. The total for Thursday’s game with Cleveland is set at 39 points.

      Oakland Raiders (5-10 SU, 10-5 over/under)

Anyone who was lulled to sleep by the Raiders’ 3-0 loss to the Cowboys in Week 1 Monday is LMFAOing right now. Oakland, however, headed into that game with a 6-10 over/under count in Week 1 of the preseason since 1995, so there might be some weight in this trend. You can be sure the offense got the gears following the exhibition opener and will be out to impress versus Arizona Friday.

      Houston Texans (5-5 SU, 8-2 over/under)

The Texans have only been around since 2002 but are an instant money maker for over bettors in Week 2 of the preseason. Houston is hitting the over at 80 percent in that span, including six straight Week 2 overs heading into Saturday’s showdown with San Francisco (+3, 36.5). The Texans ramped up their defense versus Carolina in Week 1, collecting eight sacks, but still played over the 35.5-point total.

Best Week 2 preseason under bets

      Miami Dolphins (10-6 SU, 5-11 over/under)

The Dolphins ATS and the under has been a profitable parlay in Week 2 of the preseason recently. Miami is 10-5-1 ATS in Week 2 of the exhibition slate since 1995 and has played below the number in nearly 69 percent of those games. The Fins are down a QB after David Garrard injured his knee, leaving playcalling duties to Matt Moore and rookie Ryan Tannehill for Friday’s game against Carolina, which has a 37-point total. Miami is also the most consistent under bet throughout the preseason with a 23-40-1 over/under count in exhibition play since 1995.

      Kansas City Chiefs (5-11 SU, 6-10 over/under)

The Chiefs haven’t had much success against the spread in Week 2 of the preseason, with a dreadful 2-14 ATS count since 1995. Kansas City was making money for fans of the under during that stretch but aren’t a guaranteed low score after topping the Week 2 total the past two preseasons and playing over the number in their Week 1 win against Arizona.

      Atlanta Falcons (8-8 SU, 6-9-1 over/under)

The Falcons are among nine teams that have played under the total in nine of their past 16 Week 2 preseason contests. Atlanta does have that one push which is enough to get the nod as one of the best under plays. It has gone 2-3 SU and 1-4 over/under since 2007 and has had a hard time getting on the scoreboard during that span. The Falcons host Cincinnati with a total of 37.5 points Thursday.

Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (6-6, 3.80 ERA)

Halladay turned in an impressive outing Friday night, allowing just one run while striking out eight over eight innings of a 3-1 win over the Cardinals. The Doctor has picked up back-to-back wins for the first time since April and looks poised to finish strong. He toes the rubber in Miami next.

Miguel Gonzalez, Baltimore Orioles (4-2, 3.42 ERA)

Gonzalez has come a long way since going winless in the minors last year. The righty has been a pleasant surprise for the Orioles since making his first start on July 6, posting a 4-2 record. Gonzalez surrendered just one run and struck out five over eight quality innings to pick up the win over Kansas City in his last outing. The converted reliever has allowed just one earned run over his last 15 innings pitched.

                SLUMPING

Mark Buehrle, Miami Marlins (9-11, 3.80 ERA)

Buehrle allowed four runs on seven hits over six innings of a 5-2 loss to the Dodgers on Friday. The southpaw has gone winless in his last five outings after previously winning four consecutive starts. He takes the mound at home against the Phillies next time out.

Edinson Volquez, San Diego Padres (7-8, 4.03 ERA)

Volquez was touched up for six runs over 3 1/3 innings against Pittsburgh last time out. The righty has a 13.50 ERA over his last three starts, giving up 15 runs in 10 innings after going 3-0 with a 1.55 ERA in his previous six appearances. He makes a tough road start in Atlanta on Wednesday.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Four bad teams that could make good MLB bets
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a look at the hottest and coldest teams as well as the best over and under bets in Major League Baseball.

                  Hot team: Tampa Bay Rays

                  Last week: 6-0
                  Season record: 62-52
Upcoming schedule: at Mariners, at Angels

Skinny: The Rays completed a three-game sweep of the Toronto Blue Jays at home and then travelled to Minnesota and took all three games of a weekend series with the Twins. Tampa Bay continues its 10-game road trip Monday in Seattle.

                  Cold team: Chicago Cubs

                  Last week: 1-6
                  Season record: 44-69
Upcoming schedule: vs. Astros, at Reds

Skinny: The Cubs were swept by the lowly Padres and dropped three of four to the Reds last week. Chicago has just one win in its last 12 games overall.

                  Over team: Arizona Diamondbacks

                  Last week: 6-1-0
                  Season O/U record: 55-55-5
Upcoming schedule: at Cardinals, at Astros

Skinny: The Diamondbacks have gone over the total in six straight games. The D-Backs scored six or more runs in each of their three wins last week and suffered a few defeats in high scoring fashion. The Arizona offense ranks third in runs scored in the NL.

                  Under team: Kansas City Royals

                  Last week: 5-2-0
                  Season O/U record: 51-60-3
Upcoming schedule: vs. Athletics, vs. White Sox

Skinny: The Royals had three low scoring affairs against the White Sox last week that tipped the scales in favor of the under. Kansas City continues to struggle offensively this season, ranking 11th in runs scored in the AL.

Rangers at Yankees: What bettors need to know
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at New York Yankees (-119, 10)

Beating the Yankees in New York continues to be an arduous task for the Texas Rangers. The Rangers attempt to avoid their eighth straight loss at Yankee Stadium when the teams meet in Wednesday’s third contest of a four-game set. Nick Swisher has two homers and seven RBIs as New York posted victories in the first two games. The Yankees have a 1.5-game lead over Texas for the top record in the American League.

New York has won seven of eight games and its .595 winning percentage in third best in the majors behind the Washington Nationals and Cincinnati Reds. Look who's back: Best and worst bets in the WNBA
                              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                              The WNBA is back.

Where did it go you might ask? Most people had no idea the WNBA was on an Olympic break during the 2012 summer games, with its biggest stars battling in London. The season picks up Thursday after more than a month hiatus, with three games on the schedule.

Whether you’ve been waiting patiently for the “Dub” to start back up or are just considering betting on women’s hoops for the first time all summer, here’s a look at the best and worst bets from the first half of the WNBA season.

                              Best ATS

San Antonio Silver Stars (13-5 SU, 15-3 ATS)

What is it with San Antonio basketball teams making serious coin for bettors this year? The Silver Stars have picked up where the Spurs left off and have cashed in for backers in five straight before the break. Star point guard Becky Hammon helped Russia to a fourth-place finish at London 2012 while Sophia Young continues to dominate inside.

                              Worst ATS

Phoenix Mercury (4-15 SU, 6-13 ATS)

The Mercury have long been one of the stronger sides in the WNBA, but a rash of injuries slowed their start in 2012. Phoenix, however, is probably the one team that benefited from the break the most. Not only did the layoff allow Candice Dupree to rest her ailing knee but it also gave Olympian Diana Taurasi a chance to get in shape after missing the first half of the season. Taurasi was all fired up at the Olympics and could be the spark Phoenix needs.

                              Best over

                              Minnesota Lynx (15-4, 13-6 over/under)

Offense is the name of the game in the WNBA. The two top teams, Minnesota and San Antonio, are also the best over bets in the league. The Lynx have a surplus of fire power, averaging a WNBA-best 86.7 points per game behind Seimone Augustus, Maya Moore, Rebekkah Brunson and Lindsay Whalen. Minnesota eclipsed the total in seven of its last eight games before the break.

                              Best under

                              Seattle Storm (9-10, 6-13 over/under)

Seattle’s stars may be getting up there in age but the defense is still one of the stiffest in the league. The Storm give up only 72.1 points a night – tops in the WNBA – and score just over 70 points for. Veteran center Lauren Jackson led Australia to a bronze at the summer games and is expected to join the team after sitting out the first chunk of the schedule.
