    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Terrelle Pryor needs to play Arena Football to develop his passing skills; he's not going to get enough work at the NFL level to get better. Right now, his passing makes Tim Tebow look like Dan Marino.

-- Why is there a coaches' poll in college football? Coaches watch film of their opponents; they don't have time to watch anyone else.

-- Cole Hamels has now thrown 20 consecutive scoreless innings after he blanked the pathetic Marlins 4-0 in Miami.

-- Paul Runge, who has already umped the plate for two no-hitters this season, had a no walk/11-strikeout game in Atlanta, won 4-1 by Padres. It was Runge's fifth straight under behind the plate.

-- Toronto beat the White Sox 3-2 in 11, improving their record in 1-run games to 7-16. Adam Dunn hit two solo homers for the Pale Hose.

-- Washington Nationals continue to roll; they were beating Giants 11-0 in 4th inning Monday night, wound up winning 14-2.

    ************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

    13) In nine starts since his 134-pitch no-hitter June 1st, Johan Santana is 3-6, 7.98; in the last six innings he started on the mound, Met opponents have scored 21 runs. In four starts against the Braves this season, Santana has allowed 20 runs in 12.2 IP. But at least he has the no-hitter.

Mets were solid contenders before Santana’s season turned sour.

    12) Its August 14, and Cliff Lee has two wins. Phillies are 7-13 in his starts; 7-3 when they score 4+ runs, 0-10 when they don’t.

    11) One of the perils of interleague play are teams making one visit to each city, so rainouts are tougher to reschedule.

Royal-Oriole game Saturday night started after 10pm, over three hours late, because teams didn’t want a day/night DH the next day. O’s were honoring Eddie Murray and had a big crowd, one that was a lot smaller once the game actually started.

    10) NFL really needs to sign up its officials; they’re risking chaos by letting replacement officials work in real games. If replacement officials are awful in Week 1, and why wouldn’t they be, what bargaining power would the NFL have then?

    9) Green Bay’s backup QB’s are Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) and BJ Coleman (Tennessee, transferred to UT-Chattanooga), two very inexperienced players; will Mike McCarthy be more protective of Aaron Rodgers early this season, with steady backup Matt Flynn now playing in Seattle? It’s a fair question.

    8) Remember the name Thaddeus Lewis; he’s a backup QB way down on Cleveland’s depth chart, but he was impressive in previous summer stints with the Rams, and he played a lot of productive football at Duke, where his coach was QB guru David Cutcliffe, who coached both Manning brothers. If Lewis gets a shot to start someday, I’m betting he’ll do a damn good job.

    7) Mitt Romney is 65, his VP candidate Paul Ryan 42; their 23-year age difference is 7th-biggest in Presidential election history.

Record goes to James Buchanan in 1856; he was 30 years older than his VP, John Breckinridge.

    6) Villanova hired an assistant basketball coach recently, then had to fire him because he lied on his resume. Whats up with that? Why lie about having played D-I basketball 20+ years ago? How many more guys like him are out there, hoping nobody checks their references/history?

    5) I’m guessing Jets’ opponents will wind up leaving their defense on the field when Gang Green punts, to guard against Tim Tebow running fakes out of punt formation. Interested to see if they go for two points after TD’s and let Tebow run the option near the goal line.

    4) Lee Westwood canned his coach and interim caddy (his regular caddy is injured/out for year) after the PGA. Nothing like accepting responsibility for your own failures.

    3) Rays are 21-8 this season with Evan Longoria in lineup, 42-44 without him; he sat out Tampa's win in Seattle Monday night.

    2) Longoria missed 85 games with an injured hamstring; Giants’ DB Antrel Rolle told the NY Post this weekend he played in Super Bowl LY with a torn right rotator cuff, and a partially torn left one.

Guy on the Patriots played in the Super Bowl with a torn ACL. Interesting contrast between the two sports.

    1) Need a new house? Want to live in south Florida? Alex Rodriguez has put his 9-bedroom, 11-bath house (mansion??) up for sale. It can be all yours……for a mere $38M. He bought it two years ago for $24M.

Description of the house sounds more like a mini-**** than a house.

    What a country.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            STREAKING

Mat Latos, Cincinnati Reds (10-3, 3.81 ERA)

Latos had another solid start against the Brewers on Wednesday afternoon, but was dealt a no decision after the bullpen blew a 2-1 lead. The righty went seven strong innings, allowing one earned run while striking out eight. He’s now 3-0 with a 1.65 ERA in his last four outings. His next start is at home versus the Mets.

Doug Fister, Detroit Tigers (6-7, 3.48 ERA)

Fister had another quality start Thursday, holding the Yankees to two runs through 6 1/3 innings. The right-hander has been incredible since the All-Star break, going 4-1 with a 1.79 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 41:6 K:BB ratio in six starts. He takes the mound on the road against the Twins next time out.

            SLUMPING

Zack Greinke, Los Angeles Angels (0-1, 5.68 ERA)

Greinke has struggled in his three starts since joining the Angels, surrendering 12 earned runs over 19 innings. The former Brewer has most recently suffered defeats on the road in Oakland and Chicago. The righty goes for his first win since June 27 against the Indians in his next start.

Josh Beckett, Boston Red Sox (5-9, 4.97 ERA)

Beckett was pounded by Texas for eight runs in his last start Wednesday, but Red Sox management has decided to keep him in the rotation to start against Baltimore. The right-hander was pulled in his previous start against Detroit because of back spasms.
