    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Reason #4,598 why you shouldn't bet on exhibition football; Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis asked the Jets not to run any Wildcat offense in the game last night. What good is Tebow if he doesn't run the Wildcat?

--Jordan Palmer was 9-13 for 110 yards, rallying Jacksonville from behind to beat the Giants 32-31, after Big Blue had led 24-7. Palmer played ball at UTEP; he's Carson Palmer's younger brother.

-- Boise State QB Kellen Moore was dismal in his pro debut, 4-14 for 40 yards. Detroit led 14-3 at the half, wound up losing 19-17.

-- Giants were shut out in a Lincecum start for the sixth time this season, losing 3-0 at home to the immortal Tyler Chatwood Friday night.

-- Kevin Kolb was 1-5 for 21 yards in Cardinals' 27-17 loss to the Chiefs; Arizona spent lot of money on him- they're not getting much in return.

-- Umpires Bill Miller/Dale Scott were both KO'd from games this week after being hit by foul balls; when CB Bucknor/Dan Iassogna are a crew's best umpires, well, lets just say chaos isn't very far away.

    *********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but...........

    13) You could almost hear former Saints’ QB Bobby Hebert throwing his remote at the TV; what in the name of Les Miles was going on out there?

Packers-Chargers Thursday night, and LSU alum Jarrett Lee is under center for the Chargers, because #2 QB Charlie Whitehurst is hurt. Lee didn’t even get in the LSU-Alabama national title game LY, presumably because he was so bad the Tigers had zero chance with him against Bama’s great defense.

Hebert, now a radio talk show host, is also the father of LSU center T-Bob (now with the Rams); he blistered LSU coach Miles after the game for not giving Lee a chance to relieve starting QB Jordan Jefferson. Now wee know why; Lee isn't as bad as he looked in LSU's games.

    12) Now Lee had done nothing in games in his career to suggest he was a pro player, but on Thursday, after being coached in camp by QB wizard Norv Turner, Lee was 15-22 for 235 yards, one TD and one lousy INT, but dammit, he looked pretty good for a rookie, better than he ever looked in college. Go figure.

    11) Laker coach Mike Brown should go buy a lottery ticket; first he gets to coach Lebron James, and despite not winning a title in Cleveland, he gets hired by the Lakers, where he gets to coach Kobe Bryant/Pau Gasol, and now this season, Steve Nash/Dwight Howard, though if you ask Stan Van Gundy, coaching Howard isn’t all its cracked up to be. Brown should win at least one title, in LA, though.

    10) Was weird seeing ads on the Internet for a Lakers’ jersey #10, which is Steve Nash’s new number. Now we know why he went for #10 and not #12 (Lakers’ #13 is retired for Wilt Chamberlain).

Department of irony: Howard will wear #12 for the Lakers, a number once worn by a Lakers' backup guard named.......Pat Riley.

    9) I don’t pay much attention to exhibition football scores; if I remember right, the Rams were 4-0 last summer. Look how that turned out.

    8) Turns out that Urban Meyer’s wife is a psych nurse, which is a good match for a bigtime coach. ESPN.com’s article on Meyer is worth reading, even if it is pretty disturbing at times.

    7) Mainstream media makes a lot out of baseball hitting streaks, but no one ever talks about a consecutive games streak of getting on base, which is just the hitting streak with walks added in. To me, thats a more significant mark than a simple hitting streak.

Turns out that Ted Williams has three of the four longest streaks in baseball history (Joe Dimaggio has the 4th). Williams’ career walk stats are amazing.

    6) The 1960/70’s Cubs never won a damn thing, but they have four guys in the Hall of Fame (Banks-Jenkins-BWilliams-Santo), plus skipper Leo Durocher. 1971-75 Oakland A’s won five straight division titles and three World Series in a row, but only have Hunter-Fingers-Jackson in, along with manager Dick Williams—well, Billy Williams was in Oakland as a DH for a while, but nothing he did there got him into Cooperstown.

I’m thinking SS Bert Campaneris would be a HOF candidate, had he done what he did in New York or LA.

    5) Interesting segment on Showtime’s reality show about the Marlins; when Miami decided to take struggling pitcher Carlos Zambrano out of the rotation, it was GM Larry Beinfest who mandated the change, not manager Ozzie Guillen. Guillen didn’t object, but it wasn’t his move.

    4) Umpire charts can be helpful in betting baseball totals, but remember this; if a pitcher has nothing that day and is getting pounded, there’s very little an ump can do to bail him out. It’s the guys who have electric stuff who need help on marginal pitches- that’s where a pitcher-friendly umpire can be huge.

    3) Jay Cutler should enjoy playing QB more this season; he gets to audible at the line now. In LY’s offense, the Mike Martz offense, QBs aren’t allowed to change the play at the line. Will be very interesting if Martz works a Bear game on FOX this season.

    2) USA basketball opened at -26 over Argentina, got bet down to -23; the sportsbooks fared well, as the Americans won by 26.

    1) It would be the greatest thing in sports history if the Lakers didn’t win the championship next year, then fired Mike Brown and replaced him with Stan Van Gundy. I’m just sayin’…...it sickens me to see a guy like Dwight Howard stab a coach in the back, especially a successful coach, then blatantly lie about it in the media.

Players are running the NBA, not a recent or a positive development.

NASCAR betting: Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen preview

The NASCAR Sprint Cup adds a little twist this week as the series heads to the road course at Watkins Glen for Sunday’s Finger Lakes 355 at The Glen.

Few drivers can deal with the twists and turns of the Glen, and has the stats to back it up, better than this week’s favorite Tony Stewart. Stewart has the most wins among active drivers here with five and has the highest driver rating at the Glen.

“It’s a race that we always look forward to,” Stewart told the media. “We’ve had a lot of success there and it’s just fun. It’s like taking Sonoma and just multiplying the speed times three. It’s just a lot faster track. It still has the same elevation changes, but you’re just running a lot quicker. Both Sonoma and Watkins Glen are two places on the schedule that we really enjoy coming to.”

Stewart finished second at the only other road course stop this season, Sonoma, and is the clear favorite to add a sixth win to his Glen resume Sunday.

“When you’ve won five races, it gives you that confidence that you know how to win, and know what you have to do to get to victory lane,” he said. “I know what feel I need when we get here. It’s just a matter of going out and practicing and putting yourself in that position.”

Jeff Gordon broke a winless streak by being in the right place at the right time last week at Pocono. He has four wins here, and while the last one at the Glen was in 2001, Gordon has nine career road course wins leading all drivers past and present. With his win last week, Gordon has renewed energy and will look to continue his rebound towards a berth in the Chase. Gordon could go all the way Sunday and find his way back to victory lane at the Glen for the first time in over a decade.

"(The Pocono win) only puts more pressure on us over these next several weeks, but we're ready for the challenge," said Gordon, who has moved from 22nd in the point standings to 13th on the heels of seven consecutive finishes of 12th or better. "With all we've been through this year and this team staying together while not pointing fingers, we knew if we could get to Victory Lane it would make us stronger.

"We've put together a string of good runs and finishes, but we have to keep fighting for wins,” he added. “I don't know if one win will be good enough to secure a wildcard spot."

Kyle Busch started from the pole here last year. He would go on to finish third and heads back to the Glen looking to seal the deal. After winning no fewer than three races a season since 2008, Busch has been uncharacteristically absent from victory lane, his only win this season was at Richmond in May. With the kind of speed he showed here last season, Busch could add a much needed win at the Glen and increase his hopes of making the Chase. Busch knows how to get around the Glen and enjoys racing here.

“To me, going through turn one and up through the esses are pretty cool and a lot of fun,” Busch said. “It’s challenging but, yet, a lot of fun. As you come down the front straightaway, it’s a downhill braking zone, so you feel like you don’t have to brake as soon as you need to, but you need to in order to get slowed down for turn one. You try to stay out and get a good, hard cut to the right for turn one and accelerate out of there as quickly as you can to get set up for the esses. (You) stay wide on the left and then turn into the right-hander in (turn) two – smooth. You’re getting out of the gas but not using too much brake, just rolling off in there. As the car gets in there and loads, it actually takes a really big set because that’s when you start going back uphill. So the car will load up and that’s when you get back in the gas really wide open. And then you have to turn back to the left and be able to roll back out of it just enough to make the car bend. And then you’re back wide open again to the right-side guardrail and just keeping it tight through the right-hander that we call turn five.”

Party Crasher: Don’t ever count out Jimmie Johnson. Johnson may not have a stellar road course record, but he has been on a roll and could easily add a road course win to go with his Sonoma victory from 2010.

Others: Brad Keselowski finished second at The Glen a year ago and bids to become the track’s third consecutive first-time winner. Marcos Ambrose is the defending winner of this race and while his team seems to be struggling if they find their groove, Ambrose could repeat Sunday.

Bottom line: 19 of the 29 races at Watkins Glen have been won from a top-five starting position. 21 of the 29 races at Watkins Glen have been won from a top-10 starting position. The deepest in the field that a Watkins Glen race winner has started was 18th by Steve Park in 2000.

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

David Price, Tampa Bay Rays (14-4, 2.49 ERA)

Price allowed one run over seven innings and struck out 10 batters in his last start against the Orioles on Wednesday. He’s now tossed seven innings or more in seven straight starts, winning six of those outings. The lefty hasn’t taken a loss since June 13 and has to be considered as one of the frontrunners for the AL CY Young award. His next start is against the Twins at Target Field.

                A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (14-3, 3.19 ERA)

Burnett held the high-powered Reds to two runs over 8 2/3 innings in his last start and the former Yankee took a no-hitter into the eighth inning in his previous outing against the Cubs. The righty has quickly emerged as the ace of the Pirates' staff and takes the mound against the lowly Padres in his next outing

                SLUMPING

Ivan Nova, New York Yankees (10-6, 4.81 ERA)

Nova was rocked again Monday in a loss to the Tigers as he pitched 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven runs. The righty has surrendered 23 long balls and 160 hits in just over 138 innings this season. Nova looks to pick up his first win since July 8 in Toronto on Saturday.

Tommy Milone, Oakland Athletics (9-9, 3.91 ERA)

Milone surrendered six runs on nine hits over six innings of a 6-5 loss to Toronto on Sunday. The lefty has allowed 16 runs over his last 19 innings after a string of six starts where he allowed two or fewer runs. He takes the hill in Chicago against the White sox next time out.

What bettors need to know: Saturday's NFL preseason games

Football bettors can choose from two games on the NFL preseason schedule Saturday.

Here’s a quick look at each of the matchups and their odds and trends

Houston Texans at Carolina Panthers (-3, 35.5)

The Houston defense had a huge turnaround from the 2010 season going from one of the worst units in the league to ranking second in total defense last season.

Inside linebacker Brian Cushing has spent two nights in the hospital with a viral infection this week, but coach Gary Kubiak won’t rule him out of Saturday’s preseason opener. Quarterback Matt Schaub will play 12 to 15 snaps at Carolina. T.J. Yates and John Beck will take over from there and finish the game, according to Kubiak.

It has been a turbulent training camp for the Carolina Panthers.

Offensive tackle Jeff Otah’s contract with the Panthers was terminated after he was dealt to the New York Jets, failed his physical and was sent back to Carolina, where he once again failed another physical.

Cornerback Captain Munnerlyn has been feuding with wide receiver Steve Smith and Jonathan Stewart after they took issue with his physical style of play in camp. Munnerlyn’s competition at corner, Brandon Hogan (knee)and Josh Norman (hamstring), are already missing time due to injury.

The pressure will once again fall on Cam Newton and the rushing attack of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart this season.

                        Tennessee Titans @ Seattle Seahawks (-3, 33.5)

Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will be the starter when the Titans open the preseason against the Seahawks, coach Mike Munchak informed the media Thursday.

Hasselbeck will play 10-15 snaps and then Jake Locker will take over until halftime. Rusty Smith and Nick Stephens are expected to share snaps in the second half.

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport reporter earlier this week that Chris Johnson looked like the "Chris Johnson of old," referring to his effort in 2009 where he rushed for over 2,000 yards.

The Seahawks signed wide receiver Terrell Owens on Monday to a one-year deal reportedly worth $1 million.

“His workout and work ethic was extraordinary,” head coach Pete Carroll said via Twitter earlier this week. “He has a chance to start over here, and that’s pretty cool.”

Seattle's three-way quarterback competition begins on Saturday. Matt Flynn's been promised the first half and Russell Wilson the second.
