Angels & Athletics Continue Key Series

The AL West is in the spotlight on Tuesday night when the Los Angeles Angels visit the Oakland Athletics at 10:05 p.m. (ET).

The Angels opened as $1.35 road favorites on the Don Best odds screen behind C.J. Wilson. The total is set at seven runs (shaded to the ‘under’). The seemingly ageless Bartolo Colon continues to confound his critics as he goes for Oakland.

Each team is in the wild-card hunt, but Wilson (9-7, 3.27 ERA) really needs to improve his recent performance. He hasn’t won a game since way back on June 26th, seven starts ago.

The 31-year-old lefty has also had really high pitch counts, at least 113 in five of his last six starts. The Angels only won one of those contests with batters just daring him to throw it over the plate.

Don Best MLB analyst Kenny White points out that Wilson walked just 3.0 batters per nine innings last year with Texas. That number is 4.0 this year after signing a big free agent contract.

Oakland (58-50) is 5.5 games behind Texas in the AL West standings. That’s pending the Monday night series opener. Jered Weaver is a $1.55 favorite and could push Los Angeles (58-51) a half-game ahead of the A’s.

Colon (8-8, 3.55 ERA) has a 16 1/3 scoreless innings streak, but has been fortunate as he’s given up a lot of hits. Don Best’s White gives Colon a lot of credit for wiggling out of jams and believes he will have another quality outing on Tuesday.

The now 39-year-old Colon had a 135-75 record from 1998-2005 before dealing with a lot of injuries through 2009. He sat out 2010 before resurfacing with the Yankees last year. He is having one of his most productive years despite his age, with Oakland 5-1 in his last six starts.

Note that both teams have hit a mini-lull of late. Los Angeles is 4-6 in its last 10, while Oakland is slightly better at 5-5. The upstart Athletics are still 21-9 overall in their last 30, playing torrid baseball for most of July.

White has good head-to-head betting information between the teams. Oakland is 5-4 in the season series, but the total has gone ‘under’ in eight of those games.

The ‘under’ is also 6-1 in Colon’s last seven starts overall.

Keep checking the Don Best Pro Odds for all the latest injury and other information.

Pirates Open 11-Game Homestand Vs. Arizona

Denied a fourth consecutive road series win this past weekend in Cincinnati, the Pittsburgh Pirates return home this week to begin a long 11-game homestand against a trio of NL West foes.

The homestand begins with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday when rookie Wade Miley and the Bucs' Erik Bedard collide in a battle of southpaws. Arizona is a $1.20 road favorite in the opener with a total in the 7½-8 run range.

Our focus is on the second of the 4-game set Tuesday (7:05 p.m. ET) as Pittsburgh's Jeff Karstens shoots for his fifth straight winning decision opposite a second D-Backs rookie left-hander, Patrick Corbin. Game 2 finds the odds reversed with the Pirates beginning as $1.20 favorites on the overnight numbers while the first totals going up were at the 8-run mark.

Pittsburgh is coming off a 6-3 road trip that would normally be termed a success. But in this case, the Pirates lost two games in the NL Central standings to the Reds who have been on a tear since just after the all-star break. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks were going 6-4 during the same span the Bucs were 6-3, and Arizona gained two games on the NL West-leading San Francisco Giants.

Though third in the NL West, Arizona actually opened this series closer to its division lead than the Pirates are in second of the NL Central. Pittsburgh does have a 6-game advantage on the Diamondbacks in the National League wild card race, however.

The D-Backs had an opportunity to pick up more ground in their division, but dropped the final two games in Philadelphia last weekend in the middle part of their three city tour that concludes in Iron City this week. As Arizona was losing a pair in Philly, both the Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers were pulling off sweeps of the Colorado Rockies and Chicago Cubs respectively.

Corbin has bounced back and forth from the D-Backs to the minors this season, and was called up just as this road trip was beginning to take the rotation slot that previously belonged to Josh Collmenter. The lefty tossed six shutout innings last Wednesday against the Dodgers, helping the Snakes complete a sweep in LA as even-money underdogs.

That was Corbin's sixth start for Arizona to go with five relief outings. The Diamondbacks have split his six assignments, as well as the four starts Corbin has made on the road. Tuesday will mark his career cherry vs. the Pirates.

Karstens' last appearance against the Diamondbacks ended with him going on the disabled list for a little more than two months. He took the mound in Arizona on April 17 and was pulled after just an inning during which the D-Backs scored twice. His first start back from the DL in Philly on June 25 was a rough one (5 IP, 6 ER), but Karstens has since settled in to help the Bucs to five wins in his last six assignments.

Just three of his 10 starts this season have come on the home diamond, and Karstens has been brilliant at PNC Park by allowing just one run over 21 innings. That lone score came in the first frame of his initial home outing on April 7, giving Karstens a 20-2/3 scoreless inning string at home when he climbs the mound on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh took two of three from the D-Backs in Arizona back in April, the 'under' also winning twice. The Pirates have won five of the last six played at PNC Park ('under' 4-2).

Yankees try to stop Detroit wins streaks Tuesday

        NEW YORK YANKEES (63-45)

        at DETROIT TIGERS (59-50)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -105, Detroit -105, Total: 9½

The red-hot Tigers seek a sixth straight victory, and 10th straight home win, when they continue their four-game set with the Yankees on Tuesday night.

Detroit took the series opener 7-2 on Monday, and has scored 40 runs during its five-game win streak to begin August. The Yankees still have the largest division lead in baseball (5½ games up on Baltimore), but have been stumbling recently with a 3-6 record in their past nine games. On Tuesday, they’ll face a starter that has had their number in Detroit, Rick Porcello. In his past three home starts versus the Yankees, Porcello is 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA, leading his team to victory all three times. New York’s Tuesday starter, Phil Hughes, has also been outstanding in his past three starts at Comerica Park, allowing just one run and 11 hits in 22 innings (0.41 ERA, 0.77 WHIP), striking out 22 batters. However, it was Prince Fielder who provided that run with a solo homer, and there is no hitter in baseball hotter than the Tigers slugger who is 10-for-17 with 3 HR and 8 RBI during the five-game surge. Also, consider that in the second half of the past three seasons, the Yankees are 0-9 with Hughes on the mound against a team with a winning record. With an even money line, the pick here is surging DETROIT to win again at home.

This pair of three-star FoxSheets trends also back the Tigers:

Play On - Home teams when the money line is +125 to -125 (DETROIT) - with a starting pitcher whose ERA is 4.20 to 4.70 on the season (AL), with a hot bullpen whose WHIP is under 1.250 the last 15 games. (72-34 over the last 5 seasons.) (67.9%, +37.9 units. Rating = 3*).

Play Against - Road teams (N.Y. YANKEES) - excellent power team (>=1.5 HR's/game) vs. a starting pitcher who gives up 0.5 or less HR's/start, starting a well-rested pitcher who is working on 5 or 6 days rest. (75-37 since 1997.) (67%, +35.7 units. Rating = 3*).

Hughes (11-8, 3.96 ERA, 1.26 WHIP) has been outstanding in his past seven starts, going 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. Although Hughes has dominated in Detroit, the road hasn’t been a place of good fortune this year. In eight road starts in AL cities, Hughes has a 4.63 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, and the Yankees have lost six of those eight starts. In addition to Fielder, Hughes will need to be careful with the majors RBI leader Miguel Cabrera who is 7-for-19 in his career versus Hughes and is 8-for-22 with 3 HR and 7 RBI in the past five games. New York is certainly capable of ending Detroit’s winning streaks, posting the fifth-best road record in the majors at 29-23 (.558). The Yankees bullpen has also been outstanding (3.15 ERA), especially on the road where it has a 2.59 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 154 K’s in 142.1 IP and 18 saves in 23 chances.

Porcello (8-6, 4.65 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) hasn’t been great this season, but the Tigers are 13-8 when he pitches, which is the best winning percentage among all Detroit starters. Porcello likes to challenge hitters, walking just 31 batters in 122 innings, but he also keeps the ball in the park, serving up only eight home runs this year. In face, he has not allowed a home run since June 8, reeling off nine straight starts without giving up a single longball. Because Porcello averages less than six innings per start, the Tigers relievers know they’ll need to be ready. The Detroit bullpen has been especially tough at home this year, posting a 3.23 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and converting 10-of-14 save chances.
