    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Some thoughts from a shaky 99-94 US win over Lithuania Saturday

-- Lithuania, a 35-point underdog, outrebounded the Ameircans and went toe-to-toe with them in a fast-paced first half (55-51 US at half).

-- How does Kobe Bryant play 20 minutes and score one basket (1-7 from the floor)?

-- Americans were 10-33 from the arc; Durant was 4-7, so you can see that opponents will pack defenses in and make the USA hit jumpers.

-- Lithuania, a 35-point underdog, shot 58% from the floor for the game, and its subs made 15 of 21 shots, 71 freakin' percent!!!!

-- Lithuania, a 35-point underdog that lost to Argentina by 23, led 84-82 with 5:51 left in the game. Spin it how you like, this was a red flag.

-- Other than Tunisia/Nigeria, no one in this tournament is afraid of the American team; they were life-and-death to win a game when they had a +14 turnover margin.

-- Linus Kleiza, who played for the Nuggets, had 25 points.

Maybe the American team should practice on Sunday.

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind........

    13) Why do ballplayers wear their sunglasses on their hats? Watched a guy butcher a foul pop in sun Saturday, while his shades were protecting the logo on his cap from ultraviolet rays.

Whatever happened to flip-down sunglasses? They seemed to work fine.

    12) How is it the Mariners traded Ichiro Suzuki to the Bronx, but refused to trade them Brendan Ryan? Has to be a good story in there somewhere.

    11) Tunisia, China and England are all 0-4 in Olympic hoops; someone is going to have some 'splainin' to do when they get back to Beijing.

    10) UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun, who is 70, broke his hip riding his bicycle in a race for charity Saturday; he had surgery Saturday night, so we wish coach Calhoun well, and suggest to his wife that she sell the bike.

    9) Kansas City Royals fired their first base coach this weekend; that should fix all their problems, right?

    8) Omar Vizquel broke into the big leagues in 1989; of the 15 major league ballparks he played in that year, only five still exist.

    7) The first Kentucky Fried Chicken opened in 1952. In Utah. Am told the place is still open.

    6) Mike Baxter of the Mets tied an NL record Saturday night when he walked five times in one game; thats an NL record for a nine-inning game.

    5) Red Sox tried to use closer Aceves for two innings Saturday, and it did not work; up 4-3 with men at 1st/2nd and two out, Joe Mauer took Aceves over the Green Monster and gave Bobby Valentine another sleepless night.

    4) How does anyone in the Colorado front office survive this disaster of a season? At least the Astros have a plan; get younger, acquire prospects. It is impossible to tell what the Rockies are trying to do.

    3) Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman struck out 39 of last 68 batters he faced, allowing eight hits. They better not make him a starter again.

    2) I know full well that Moneyball proponents consider field managers to be expendable middle managers, but thats a bunch of bunk. Some of these teams run with so little margin for error, that a manager cannot afford any mistakes, or his team will lose.

Tim McCarver can promote Joe Girardi for Manager of Year every week on national TV, but Girardi has the biggest safety net in the majors, a $200M+ payroll. He goes 5-10 in 15 games, so what? They'll just go buy a guy who is a fading superstar, making $17M a year.

When Girardi managed the Marlins, he wound up getting fired for cursing out his owner, who was bitching at umpires from his seat near the dugout. Lot more stress involved for everyone, managing a small market team.

    1) Clint Eastwood endorsed Mitt Romney for President this week, but the problem Romney has is that I'd vote for Eastwood for President before I'd vote for him. Haven't had lot of great Presidential choices lately.

      NASCAR betting: Pennsylvania 400 preview

It’s no longer unknown territory. This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup series returns to Pocono Raceway for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 400. But, unlike the stop in June, teams will have notes and experience with the newly paved speedway.

To find an edge, look no farther back than last week’s stop at the Brickyard and those who did well here in June. The 2.5-mile tracks have similar flat corners and what worked well last week, and in June, should work Sunday.

That’s why this week’s favorite has to be Jimmie Johnson. Johnson dominated last week at Indy and there’s no reason the Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 juggernaut won’t continue this week.

"I feel that from a performance standpoint, we're as strong as we've ever been,” Johnson said after his record fourth win at the Brickyard. “We've had issues late in a race that's cost us track position for a variety of reasons and that's the part that we need to make sure is buttoned up before the Chase starts and carry that through the Chase.”

Johnson was fourth here in June. In fact, he’s finished fourth the last three times the series has visited Pocono. Johnson has two wins and has a pretty good chance adding a third this weekend.

“I am excited to go back [to Pocono] because we had a really strong car there in the last race,” Johnson said. “I think we had a few track position issues to overcome and a two speeding issues, but we still managed a Top 5 finish. Chad (Knaus, crew chief) called a great race. He got me some track position on two tires. The pit stops were flawless and we had a fast car. After last week’s win at the Brickyard the entire team is excited to get to Pocono and keep the momentum going.”

Tony Stewart was third here in June, and tenth last week at Indy. In the June race Stewart looked strong and is an expert in fuel mileage races, something that happens at Pocono a lot. Stewart is eighth in the standings and looking to add another season win to three he has already. Stewart is tied for wins this season with Johnson and could break that tie Sunday.

“It was pretty hard to pass (in June), but it kind of normally is,” Stewart said. “I don't think it was really any worse than it normally is. But seemed like at the end of the race it got pretty racy there and guys could move around a little bit. All in all, for a freshly paved track, it was a pretty good race.

Denny Hamlin was on the pole at Indy last week. Hamlin has four wins at Pocono, only one behind Jeff Gordon who leads all active drivers with five. At one time Hamlin was nearly untouchable here and if he finds his groove Sunday, he could improve on his fifth place in June and tie Gordon with a fifth win.

If anyone knows how to turn a fast lap at Pocono its Hamlin:

"You have to be very disciplined as you enter turn one,” Hamlin said. “They have marks on the side of the wall and you want to discipline yourself to use those marks so you don't overdrive the corner. You try to get all the exit speed off of (turn) two as you can -- you shift into fourth (gear) about 200 yards past turn two to try to get that long run right before you get to the tunnel turn.”

“For my approach, I try to arc into the tunnel turn just as wide as I can to make sure I get that long, low line on the exit of the tunnel to make sure I get a good line into turn three,” he added. “Into turn three, you're just trying to carry all that speed you can because that front straightaway is so important for passing that you have to get position on a guy off of turn three. You want to carry as much throttle as you can, but down shift right in the center of three, make sure you pull the up shift right before you get to the start-finish line."

Party Crasher: Carl Edwards was 11th in June, but as he showed last week at Indy with a second place start, the crew has the speed. If they can keep the car on the track this week he could easily be a factor. After a mechanical disaster last week and the desperation of needing to break a winless streak dating back to the spring of last year, another element motivating Edwards is his all or nothing attitude. His goal is simple, no points racing, winning is the only thing that matters.

"We have to go race. We can do that, we can race like that," said Edwards, who has a pair of Pocono victories. "It will actually be a big relief in a way because there is no other choice. We just go race for wins."

Bottom Line: 14 of 69 races have been won from the pole, Bill Elliott (1985, 2002) and Denny Hamlin (2006 sweep) are the only drivers to have done it twice. Joey Logano is the most recent driver to win from the pole; he accomplished that feat in June.

The Japanese product is settling into his role as a starter, allowing only four earned runs in his last 19 innings of work. He’s 1-0 in that three-game span and coming off his best performance as a starter, giving up one run on four hits while striking out 13 batters in a win over Toronto Monday.

                A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (13-3, 3.27 ERA)

Burnett continues to enjoy a career resurgence in the Steel City, bringing a three-game winning streak into Sunday’s start in Cincinnati. The righty has proved he can win on the road as well, with his last two victories coming away from Pittsburgh. Burnett allowed only two runs on five hits with 13 Ks over 16 1-3 innings in those starts, dropping his road ERA to 4.79 – compared to just 2.00 at home.

Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals (11-2, 2.91 ERA)

Lohse’s efforts this season are making Cardinals fans forget all about Chris Carpenter. The right-hander brings a 5-0 record in his last seven into a Sunday Night Baseball matchup with the Brewers. His last start wasn’t pretty, allowing five runs in the thin air of Coors Field, but he earned the “W” and recorded 10 straight quality starts before Tuesday’s 11-6 win over the Rockies.

                Slumping

Ricky Nolasco, Miami Marlins (8-10, 4.90 ERA)

The Marlins righty has lost four straight starts and has just two wins since June 8. Nolasco has been beat up in his most recent efforts, allowing 18 runs in his previous 21 2-3 innings of “work” heading into Sunday’s showdown with Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg. While Nolasco hasn’t been sharp in those losses, Miami has provided a total of only five runs of support in his previous four starts.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Brewers at Cardinals
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals (-145, 9)

It's a National League Central battle as the Cardinals host the Brewers Sunday night.

                  LOHSE ON POINT

Kyle Lohse is 11-2 with a 2.91 ERA for the Cardinals this season. He ended July with his worst start since May, although it was in Coors Field which can be forgiven.

Lohse is ranked third in the National League with 16 quality starts this year. The Cardinals’ starter faced Milwaukee back on April 28 and gave up three runs and six hits in six innings, striking out five while walking four.

Lohse had an amazing streak of 10 starts from June 4 to July 25 where he allowed three earned runs or more just once. Lohse has allowed 12 HRs this season, but he's been able to pitch around those.

                  MARCO OH NO

Milwaukee’s Marco Estrada is still looking for his first win of the season. He threw seven strong innings against Houston Monday, allowing just two earned runs, but it wasn't enough for the victory.

He has made 12 starts with eight of them resulting in no-decisions. Estrada was on the losing end of Lohse's win on April 28, giving up five runs and seven hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked two while giving up two homers.

Estrada faced the Cardinals as a reliever twice in April giving up two runs and two hits in just over three innings. Estrada’s pitch count has been more manageable in his last two starts after throwing 114 and 113 pitches in two starts earlier this month.

                  INJURY REPORT

The Brewers are relatively clean on the injury report, although, they would be better served if Shaun Marcum and Mat Gamel were healthy. Marcum has tightness in his right elbow while the first baseman has a torn ACL that he sustained after crashing into a wall attempting to make a catch. The team is also without shortstop Alex Gonzalez and starter Chris Narveson, who has a left rotator cuff tear.

St. Louis is without two of their major starting pitchers in Chris Carpenter and Jaime Garcia. Carpenter is done after season-ending surgery to his right shoulder while Garcia should return at some point. Lance Berkman, Rafael Furcal, and Yadier Molina are all dinged up with various ailments as well.

                  TRENDS

Brewers are 4-1-1 Under in their last six Sunday games
Brewers are 3-8 in Estrada's last 11 starts
Cardinals are 4-0 in Lohse’s last four home starts
Cardinals are 8-2 Under in Lohse’s last 10 starts

                  HITTERS TO WATCH

                  Ryan Braun 9-for-32 against Lohse
                  Aramis Ramirez 9-for-20 against Lohse
                  Yadier Molina 5-for-7 against Estrada
                  Rafael Furcal 2-for-10 against Estrada

Hall of Fame Game betting preview: Cardinals vs. Saints

Hall of Fame Game: Arizona Cardinals vs. New Orleans Saints (-3, 37)

The 2012 NFL preseason kicks off in Canton, Ohio with the Hall of Fame Game. The New Orleans Saints, still stinging from the suspensions of “Bounty Gate” are putting the scandal behind them, starting with Sunday’s exhibition matchup versus Arizona.

                            Odds

Oddsmakers opened New Orleans at -2.5 and have since moved to a field goal with action on the Saints. The total originally opened as low as 34.5 points but has since been bet up to as high as 37.

                            Hall of Fame Game trends

Since 1995, Hall of Fame Game favorites are 22-17 SU with a 16-20-3 mark against the spread. In that same span, the Hall of Fame Game has posted a 23-16 over/under record. There was no HoF Game last season due to the NFL lockout.

                            Capping the QBs

Saints interim coach Joe Vitt has been tight lipped about how much his starters – namely his quarterbacks – will play in Sunday’s game. Behind Pro Bowl quarterback Drew Brees, who is expected to play sparingly, New Orleans is trying to iron out its No. 2 position between Chase Daniel and Luke McCown. Fourth stringer Sean Canfield is also expected to make an appearance Sunday.

Vitt said he wants to follow a similar QB rotation from the Saints’ 2007 Hall of Fame Game appearance versus the Pittsburgh Steelers, in which New Orleans lost 20-7 as a 3-point underdog. In that game, Brees attempted only six passes – completing one – while his three backups each attempted eight passes.

Daniel had some extra time with the Saints’ first-team offense this offseason while Brees did contract battle with the team’s brass. The Missouri product attempted only five passes last season, completing four of them for a total of 29 yards.

"I thought it was good for him to be in a position where he is the guy, he is running with the ones and having to exert himself and be the leader,'' Brees told the media of Daniel. ''I tell him that if you are not thinking about taking my job then you are thinking the wrong thing.''

Unlike New Orleans, Arizona doesn’t have a surefire starting quarterback. The Cardinals enter the 2012 campaign with one of the most heated QB battles of the preseason, weighing Kevin Kolb against John Skelton, who stepped in as the No. 1 in Week 9 after Kolb was injured last year.

Skelton was impressive, passing for 1,913, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions while helping lead the team to a 7-2 SU mark (6-3 ATS) in the final nine games of the season. Despite that effort, and a report that the Cardinals offense prefers Skelton, Kolb still sits atop the depth chart and will get the start for the Hall of Fame Game Sunday.

“Some of the guys mentioned it in the locker room," Skelton said of the supposed favoritism. "I don't know anything about that. I don't know where he got that from. From what it seems, all things are equal both in the locker room and on the field."

Kolb sat out practice this past week with a thigh contusion but head coach Ken Whisenhunt told reporters that he will be ready to start and that the team will follow a similar QB rotation as past preseasons. Last summer, Kolb threw just seven passes – connecting on four for 68 yards – in Arizona’s preseason opener. Skelton went 6 for 10 for 94 yards and a touchdown in the 24-18 win over the Oakland Raiders as a 3.5-point road underdog.

                            Replacement refs

With a labor dispute between the NFL and its officials stretching into the preseason, the league will use replacement referees for Sunday’s Hall of Fame Game.

Bettors are debating the impact of these second-string officials, unsure if it will mean more or less penalties. According to hulking NFL veteran official Ed Hochuli, replacement refs during the 2001 season threw roughly five flags per game – much fewer than the 12-14 tossed by regular officials.

Last season, the Saints were ninth in the league in fewest penalty yards per game with 48.3. The Cardinals were the sixth-most penalized team in terms of yardage in 2011, averaging 62.3 penalty yards per game. Could replacement officials miss some of those tough calls in the trenches, giving Arizona an advantage? We'll find out Sunday night.

                            New Orleans notes

-- The Saints will be without both starting cornerbacks for Sunday’s game. Jabari Greer underwent sports hernia surgery Thursday and Patrick Robinson is nursing an injured shoulder. Rookie receiver Nick Toon will also miss the game after hurting his foot in practice this week.

-- A giant billboard of suspended head coach Sean Peyton was put up in the Saints’ indoor practice facility with the words “Do Your Job” on it, the idea of owner Tom Benson. The slogan was what Peyton told his team and staff after being dealt a season-long ban due to the Saints’ bounty scandal. Peyton was cleared by the NFL to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony in Canton this weekend.

                            Arizona notes

-- The Cardinals will be short in the back field with running back Beanie Wells on the PUP list and young rusher Ryan William ruled out while recovering from a torn patella tendon injury last season. That leaves Arizona with Alphonso Smith, LaRod Stephens-Howling, William Powell and Thomas Clayton. Smith rushed for a total of 102 yards and one touchdown while Stephens-Howling posted 167 total yards on the ground in 2011.

-- Whisenhunt has posted two 0-4 SU preseason campaigns during his first five seasons calling the shots for the Cardinals and owns a 7-13 career win/loss mark in the tune-ups. That has parlayed itself into an 8-11-1 ATS count.
