    Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Jemile Weeks tripled in the 15th, then scored on a Coco Crisp sac fly as Oakland got its 13th walkoff win of the season, 5-4 over Toronto. Game ended at 2:57am, A's second 15-inning win in last five nights.

-- Brothers BJ and Justin Upton both hit their 100th career homer Friday night, less than an hour apart. Sixth set of brothers to both hit 100+ HRs.

-- When college football lines first came out, Penn State was -15.5 over Ohio U in its season opener. Line on the game is now Penn State, -7.

-- Mat Latos is 5-1, 2.13 in his last eight starts; Reds beat Pittsburgh 5-1 and are now 24 games over .500.

-- Miami's season from hell got worse when Emilio Bonifacio re-injured his left thumb in the 9th inning of Friday's nightcap. He is headed to DL, but isn't necessarily out for the season.

-- A's are now 44-10 this season when scoring 4+ runs, 14-38 otherwise.

    **********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

    13) NFL Films or FOX absolutely, positively has to do a feature this season on Sean Payton watching a Saints’ game in his house; problem is, Payton is getting hosed by the league—he’s not allowed to talk to any Saints’ personnel, he wasn’t even the guy who instituted the bounties, so why would he grant them this access? It would be great, though.

    12) I mean, will Payton eat during games? Drink? Wear his sun visor? Throw the remote? Fall asleep? Switch to other games on commercials and forget to go back to the Saints? Sneak out of camera range to text message Drew Brees at halftime? The possibilities are endless.

    11) FOX isn’t showing baseball the next two Saturdays, in deference to the Olympics. #1, this is great news for people with Extra Innings package, since we can watch all 15 Saturday games now. #2, FOX shouldn’t have rights to baseball if they defer to anything; its August, its America, there are pennant races going on. People who watch baseball aren’t the same people who watch the Olympics.

    10) Every time I see Bob Costas now, I’m reminded of his audio clip in Moneyball, where he dismisses the A’s 20-game winning streak in 2002 as “….random”, because it wasn’t done by the Bronx Bombers.

This from a guy who used to be the radio voice of the Spirits of St Louis in the old ABA. He becomes a bigshot, now he's an elitist jackass.

    9) Speaking of the A’s, George Kottaras is their fifth different catcher this year (none of them can hit); they’ve used eight different 1B’s (none have played in more than 35 games at 1B). Very weird for a winning team to be so unsettled at key positions.

    8) There are two full moons in August this year, which is very unusual, making the second full moon a “blue moon” (hence the term, “once in a blue moon”).

    7) If you’re a farmhand in the Blue Jays’ system, you might have to deal with some culture shock on your way up the ladder. Toronto’s AA team is in New Hampshire, their AAA team in Las Vegas. Now that’s worlds apart Not a lot of similarities between Las Vegas and the Granite State.

    6) Blue Jays’ catcher Yan Gomes is first Brazilian-born player in major league history.

    5) Mercifully, the NFL won’t be placing ads on their team’s uniforms, like the NBA is.

    4) If you like college basketball, ESPN.com’s Jason King wrote a terrific article on Nebraska’s new basketball coach, Tim Miles, after following him around during a day of recruiting this summer. Well worth reading.

    3) Comic impressionist Frank Caliendo is off the FOX NFL pregame show. No great loss; they have five panelists, maybe they can give each of them a little more airtime to talk about football. Novel concept.

    2) Ryan Dempster's fantasy league owners can't be real happy about what they saw Thursday night. Switching to the AL hurts his value.

    1) Legit question: if Tunisia’s basketball team played in the ACC, how many games do they win? Seriously, I'm asking.

      NASCAR betting: Pennsylvania 400 preview

It’s no longer unknown territory. This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup series returns to Pocono Raceway for Sunday’s Pennsylvania 400. But, unlike the stop in June, teams will have notes and experience with the newly paved speedway.

To find an edge, look no farther back than last week’s stop at the Brickyard and those who did well here in June. The 2.5-mile tracks have similar flat corners and what worked well last week, and in June, should work Sunday.

That’s why this week’s favorite has to be Jimmie Johnson. Johnson dominated last week at Indy and there’s no reason the Hendrick Motorsports No. 48 juggernaut won’t continue this week.

"I feel that from a performance standpoint, we're as strong as we've ever been,” Johnson said after his record fourth win at the Brickyard. “We've had issues late in a race that's cost us track position for a variety of reasons and that's the part that we need to make sure is buttoned up before the Chase starts and carry that through the Chase.”

Johnson was fourth here in June. In fact, he’s finished fourth the last three times the series has visited Pocono. Johnson has two wins and has a pretty good chance adding a third this weekend.

“I am excited to go back [to Pocono] because we had a really strong car there in the last race,” Johnson said. “I think we had a few track position issues to overcome and a two speeding issues, but we still managed a Top 5 finish. Chad (Knaus, crew chief) called a great race. He got me some track position on two tires. The pit stops were flawless and we had a fast car. After last week’s win at the Brickyard the entire team is excited to get to Pocono and keep the momentum going.”

Tony Stewart was third here in June, and tenth last week at Indy. In the June race Stewart looked strong and is an expert in fuel mileage races, something that happens at Pocono a lot. Stewart is eighth in the standings and looking to add another season win to three he has already. Stewart is tied for wins this season with Johnson and could break that tie Sunday.

“It was pretty hard to pass (in June), but it kind of normally is,” Stewart said. “I don't think it was really any worse than it normally is. But seemed like at the end of the race it got pretty racy there and guys could move around a little bit. All in all, for a freshly paved track, it was a pretty good race.

Denny Hamlin was on the pole at Indy last week. Hamlin has four wins at Pocono, only one behind Jeff Gordon who leads all active drivers with five. At one time Hamlin was nearly untouchable here and if he finds his groove Sunday, he could improve on his fifth place in June and tie Gordon with a fifth win.

If anyone knows how to turn a fast lap at Pocono its Hamlin:

"You have to be very disciplined as you enter turn one,” Hamlin said. “They have marks on the side of the wall and you want to discipline yourself to use those marks so you don't overdrive the corner. You try to get all the exit speed off of (turn) two as you can -- you shift into fourth (gear) about 200 yards past turn two to try to get that long run right before you get to the tunnel turn.”

“For my approach, I try to arc into the tunnel turn just as wide as I can to make sure I get that long, low line on the exit of the tunnel to make sure I get a good line into turn three,” he added. “Into turn three, you're just trying to carry all that speed you can because that front straightaway is so important for passing that you have to get position on a guy off of turn three. You want to carry as much throttle as you can, but down shift right in the center of three, make sure you pull the up shift right before you get to the start-finish line."

Party Crasher: Carl Edwards was 11th in June, but as he showed last week at Indy with a second place start, the crew has the speed. If they can keep the car on the track this week he could easily be a factor. After a mechanical disaster last week and the desperation of needing to break a winless streak dating back to the spring of last year, another element motivating Edwards is his all or nothing attitude. His goal is simple, no points racing, winning is the only thing that matters.

"We have to go race. We can do that, we can race like that," said Edwards, who has a pair of Pocono victories. "It will actually be a big relief in a way because there is no other choice. We just go race for wins."

Bottom Line: 14 of 69 races have been won from the pole, Bill Elliott (1985, 2002) and Denny Hamlin (2006 sweep) are the only drivers to have done it twice. Joey Logano is the most recent driver to win from the pole; he accomplished that feat in June.

        Guys,

The website the short sheets come from has changed it's format a bit and it looks like they will no longer offer those daily trends from ESPN. The reason I've been using this website is that the trends are very difficult to find at ESPN's site.

It may take a day or two just to locate them at ESPN. Until I can find them, short sheets will not be in our daily stuff.

                Saturday, August 4

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                Streaking

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (8-9, 4.28 ERA)

Floyd came off his first career stint on the DL in superb form. He's allowed just three earned runs in 12 2-3 innings since returning to the mound after taking the break due to soreness in his elbow. Floyd also allowed zero earned runs in three of his last six starts with the White Sox going 4-2 during that stretch.

                Wei-Yin Chen, Baltimore Orioles (9-6, 3.65 ERA)

This major league rookie is getting better as the season wears on. Chen set a record for a Taiwanese player in his last game when he earned 12 strikeouts in a 6-1 win over the A's. It was also the first time an O's pitcher tossed at least 10 strikeouts in fewer than six innings. Chen is working a great fastball and a nasty curve ball. Baltimore is 3-1 in his last four starts.

                Slumping

Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies (4-6, 4.33 ERA)

The Phillies are 2-1 in Halladay's three starts since coming back from a shoulder injury but the Doc's record is 0-1 in those three with a 5.82 ERA. The good news might be that Halladay has noticed something he didn't like in his delivery and is making adjustments to correct.

"I had gotten into some bad habits, arm-slot wise," Halladay told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I was a little low and side-to-side. I'm trying to get more top-to-bottom with it. That probably will affect the cutter more than anything and the curveball, too. I sort of started getting underneath the ball. Sometimes your body makes you do things to be comfortable."
