    Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- I saw this on TV; John Daly hit a golf ball that was teed up in mouth of wacky analyst David Feherty. Whose idea was that?

-- There are roughly 5,700 parking meters in the city of Cincinnati.

-- There are more females than males on the US Olympic team.

-- Andre Ethier is 5 for his last 53 against lefthanded pitchers.

-- 31 of 82 Miami Heat games next year are on ESPN, TNT or NBAtv.

-- Cardinal pitcher Joe Kelly is a distant relative of the famous gangster Machine Gun Kelly. Just thought you'd like to know.

    **********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind.........

    13) I know how difficult it is to train and make the Olympics, but I'd rather watch reruns of Undercover Boss than watch gymnastics. Or swimming.

Even the basketball, its only interesting if the American team comes close to getting beat. Would be more interesting if they showed more stuff live, but NBC is the king of tape delay, so they can orchestrate drama.

Spontaneous drama is what makes great TV. How do they not know this?

    12) Friday afternoon, Cub pitcher Travis Wood became the first starting pitcher in baseball history to give up a home run in each of first five innings of a game. Thought that might have happened once or twice before, but I guess not many pitchers stay in the game after giving up a homer in each of the first four innings.

    11) ESPN had a great stat Saturday night; since 2006, teams are 52-6 when they have a guy hit three HRs in a game; the Mets are 1-2 in those games. Ike Davis hit three taters Saturday, but somehow Mets only scored three runs in the whole game. Thats hard to do.

    10) Broadcasting baseball is so important to FOX, they don't have a game on the next two Saturdays; must be big NASCAR races on. Thats good for those of us who have the Extra Innings package; can see all the Saturday games now, at least for a couple weeks.

    9) Speaking of FOX, wonder what minion has to inform the bosses that the Red Sox suck this year and they have to stop showing their games?

    8) Carl Crawford is 22-69 (.319) in his career against CC Sabathia, but sat the bench Saturday; he played Friday, despite being 2-14 vs Phil Hughes. Crawford makes $20M a year; how does he sit against anyone?

Bobby Valentine made up some crap about the doctors having a rule about Crawford not playing five days in a row, but he played six days in a row last week. Crawford has to regret signing with them, except on payday.

    7) Someone at Fenway Park reported the Wally (mascot) costume stolen this weekend; turns out an employee had borrowed it and not told anyone. Been that kind of a year in Beantown.

    6) Going into Saturday's games, Philliy's Hunter Pence had come to bat with 302 men on base, most in the big leagues. He's knocked in 13.9% of them. Next is Matt Holliday (300, 15.7%), then Josh Willingham (298, 15.8%) and Robinson Cano (293, 11.6%).

    5) A's faced five lefty starting pitchers in a row Sunday-Friday; was good to see Smith/Moss back in the lineup for Saturday's win. Make sure you see highlights for the catch Cespedes made in left-center Saturday night. He is a great player, so fun to watch.

    4) White Sox made their move to bolster their pitching late Saturday night, acquiring lefty Francisco Liriano from the Twins. Angels traded for Zach Greinke. My A's? They traded for Milwaukee's third-string catcher.

    3) Kentucky football coach Joker Phillips is on thin ice; season ticket sales are down 27% from last year, 37% from 2009. Wildcats had it good when Rich Brooks was their coach; they won just enough to distract people from preseason basketball practice for three hours on a Saturday.

    2) Exhibit A why the DH should be eliminated: David Ortiz strained his Achilles jogging the bases after his teammate hit a home run. I'm 52-- if I was standing on first base and someone hit a homer, I could jog around the bases without getting hurt.

    1) Aubrey Huff just missed 33 games; he got hurt hopping over the dugout fence to celebrate Matt Cain's perfect game. I kid you not.

NASCAR betting: Crown Royal 400 at the Brickyard preview

It’s back to business for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunday. After the last weekend off of the season, the series heads to one of the premier tracks on the circuit, the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for the Crown Royal Curtiss Shaver 400 at the Brickyard.

While every race pays the same amount of points, winning at Indy carries a little more meaning than other stops. As for narrowing down a favorite this week, you need to start with Chevy drivers.

Chevrolet has a nine-race win streak at the Brickyard that began in 2003. That’s the longest current streak at any track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule.

The last two visits to Indy have produced surprise winners. It could be anyone’s race to win again this year, but there have been multiple winners and the favorites this week are among those repeating champions, starting with Jeff Gordon.

Gordon isn’t having the best year but he has a ton of motivation to win. He ranks 17th in points and trails Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman and Joey Logano among wildcard-eligible drivers with just seven races remaining until the field for the Chase is set.

Gordon needs a win bad. The Indiana native leads all active drivers with four victories at the Brickyard and, while he’s struggling elsewhere, he was second here last season and could easily be the class of the field Sunday.

"Growing up here and going to the track numerous times as a kid, there is just something special about each trip here,” Gordon told reporters. “But that special feeling changes quickly when I get out on the track because this place is so challenging. The four corners look the same, but each is unique with different transitions and bumps. As a driver, factoring that in with the few little dips, the way the wind is blowing, the radius and everything else can give you an advantage. But the car has to be good, as well. We've had the best car or one of the best cars in each of the races we've won here.”

Don’t count out Gordon’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson. Johnson has won three of the last six races here. Unlike Gordon, Johnson is solidly in the Chase with two wins and sits fourth in the standings. His 19th place finish here last year keeps Johnson out of the top of the favorites this week, but he will no doubt be a threat Sunday as he tries to tie Gordon’s win record.

“I’m so happy to have had three very special moments there,” Johnson said. “I hope to have a fourth and join some elite company that have won four times there.”

Tony Stewart is the hometown hero having grown up just outside the famous walls of Indy. When it comes to Indy, Stewart always seems more motivated than most. Stewart is also one of the few drivers to have raced both stockcars and open-wheel Indy cars here. He was sixth here last year and with his experience could easily add a third win to his Indy resume Sunday.

“It’s a place that is a momentum-driven track,” Stewart said. “You don’t just have two ends to the race track and two big 180-degree corners. You’ve got four 90-degree corners to negotiate. If you have one bad corner at Indy and if your car’s not right, you’re going to be bad in four corners versus two corners a lap. And with it being two-and-a-half miles, you carry so much speed, if you lose momentum at that track, it just seems like it’s really a big penalty.”

Party Crasher: Kasey Khane has never raced here as a Hendrick Motorsports driver. In his first trip here, Kahne will race with the same team that finished eighth here last year with Mark Martin behind the wheel. Kahne could be a surprise Sunday and go all the way.

Bottom line: The furthest back a race winner has started at Indianapolis was 27th, by Jeff Gordon in 2001. Two drivers have won from the pole: Kevin Harvick in 2003 and Jimmie Johnson in 2008.

USA vs. France: What bettors need to know

The U.S.A. Olympic men’s basketball team, featuring some of the top talents in the NBA, opens its 2012 London schedule against France Sunday.

Oddsmakers have set the latest version of the “Dream Team” as 24.5-point favorites against the French, with the total listed at 167.5 points – the highest number of the six basketball games on the board Sunday.

        Scouting France

France features NBA players Tony Parker and Boris Diaw of the San Antonio Spurs, Nicolas Batum of the Portland Trail Blazers, Ronny Turiaf of the Los Angeles Clippers, and Kevin Seraphin of the Washington Wizards. Former NBAers Mickael Gelabale and Yakhouba Diawara round out the roster along with future-pro Nando de Colo.

Parker has been the captain of the national team since 2003 but has never finished better than a bronze medal at 2005 World Championship in major international competition. He did, however, lead the French to the final of the Eurobasket tournament in 2011, losing to Spain. Parker averaged 22.4 points and 4.4 assists for the tournament.

“We know they have a lot of NBA players,” U.S.A. guard James Harden told the Sporting News. “It is guys that we are familiar with. They’re going to be a tough team to play because they’re good, they can shoot. They’re not going to be intimidated.”

        Travel troubles

The USA men’s team has been plagued with travel issues since arriving in London. First, they got hung up while visiting the basketball venue on Thursday. Then, they arrived 20 minutes late for a press conference Friday after their team bus entered the wrong gate and was hung up by security.

"Two days we've had nothing but issues with transportation. No one's fault in particular, just general," USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo told reporters. "We've been through so many neighborhoods, when this is over we're going to be able to do a little history on the city of London."

        Size matters?

The one thing Team USA has been criticized for is its lack of size inside. Besides Tyson Chandler and college standout Anthony Davis – two slender centers – the “Dream Team” doesn’t pack much of a punch in the paint.

Power forward Kevin Love provides the most beef down low, but has been known more for his inside-out game, especially since winning the NBA’s All-Star 3-point contest. Fellow forwards Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala are face-up threats that operate from the wing.

"They don't have a big side," France’s Batum told reporters. "They are very small but they can use it pretty well. That can be a weakness for them. But you can use a weakness to be a strength. And that's why they are very good."

Chandler struggled manning the paint by himself versus Spain, fouling out of the game with the FIBA five-foul rule.

        Roll with it baby

The Americans have arguably the two best basketball players in the world right now in LeBron James and Kevin Durant, which is why head coach Mike Krzyzewski has paired them in perhaps the most lethal pick-and-roll combo in the history of the game.

James and Durant worked the simple two-man game perfectly against Spain, with James setting the pick and Durant reading the defense off the screen. That led to a dominant inside performance from the reigning NBA MVP, who shot 10 for 15 from the field and totaled 25 points in the win over Spain. Durant finished with 13 points and two assists.

        Futures odds

The American squad, with a roster packed with stars like James, Kobe Bryant and Durant, is the overwhelming favorite to capture the gold medal at the 2012 summer games, priced at -700.

Spain, which the U.S. defeated 100-78 in an exhibition last week, is the next team listed on the outright odds at +450. France is the third-overall favorite at +2,800.

Team USA is a -1,200 favorite to win Group A, which includes France (+1,000), Argentina, Lithuania, Nigeria, and Tunisia. The top two teams from each group advance to the knockout stage.

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                STREAKING

Hiroki Kuroda, New York Yankees (10-7, 3.34 ERA)

Kuroda’s last start was overshadowed by the acquisition of fellow Japanese star Ichiro Suzuki, but certainly not forgotten by bettors. The righty helped snap the Yankees’ season-long four-game losing skid, allowing one run on three hits over seven innings against the Mariners Monday. Hiroki hasn’t been tagged with a loss since June 19, a span of six starts.

Paul Maholm, Chicago Cubs (9-6, 3.88 ERA)

It’s not often we get to talk about a Chicago Cubs pitcher that’s on a hot streak, besides Ryan Dempster. Maholm hasn’t allowed more than one earned run in each of his last six starts and has lowered his ERA from 5.38 to 3.88 in just over a month. The lefty has also picked up wins in five of his last six outings.

                SLUMPING

James McDonald, Pittsburgh Pirates (10-4, 3.15 ERA)

There’s no doubt that McDonald is the stud of the Pirates’ pitching staff, but he’s struggled in his last three starts - squandering 15 earned runs in 15 2-3 innings to the Cubs, Rockies and Brewers. He’ll have a chance to rebound against the lowly Astros Sunday.

Jonathan Sanchez, Colorado Rockies (0-1, 11.25 ERA)

A change of scenery hasn’t been enough to change Jonathan Sanchez’s fortunes. In his first start since being acquired by the Rockies, he surrendered five earned runs in just four innings against the Diamondbacks. It’s been a nightmare season for Sanchez and now he has the challenge of pitching at high altitude in his next outing against the high-powered Reds. His last win came against the Angels way back on April 9.

Sunday Night Baseball: Red Sox at Yankees
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-166)

The Yankees host the Red Sox for the finale of a three-game series on Sunday Night Baseball.

                  FELIX THE CAT

Felix Doubront gets the call for Boston. This will be his third look at the Yankees this season. Way back on April 21, the southpaw allowed just one run and four hits over six innings; Boston lost that game 15-9. His most recent attempt at beating the Yankees was on July 7. In that game, Doubront gave up four runs and four hits in just over six innings of work. Boston won that game 9-5. Doubront has been the beneficiary of a lot of run support as the Red Sox have scored six runs or more for him in six of his last nine outings. Doubront has been alternating good starts and bad starts over his last four outings.

                  KURODA THE KID

Hiroki Kuroda's first season in the American League has gone well. The righty is 10-7 with a 3.34 ERA and 103 strikeouts to just 34 walks. He has faced the Red Sox just once this season back on July 6. The righty allowed seven runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings, but he got a no-decision in New York’s 10-8 win. Kuroda has been spectacular as of late allowing two runs or less in eight of his last 11 starts. At home, Kuroda has been lights out. He has given up just 15 earned runs in his last eight home starts. Kuroda has also shown great control walking more than three batters just once.

                  INJURY BUG

Both teams are not at full strength. The Yankees are without Mariano Rivera, Alex Rodriguez, Brett Gardner, Joba Chamberlain, and Andy Pettitte. Only Rodriguez and Pettitte are expected back this season. New York did acquire Ichiro Suzuki to fill in for Gardner. Boston is without David Ortiz, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Andrew Bailey, and John Lackey.

                  TRENDS

Red Sox are 5-1 Over in their last six Sunday games
Red Sox are 7-2 in Doubront's last nine road starts
Yankees are 42-20 in their last 62 Sunday games
Yankees are 10-3 Under in Kuroda’s last 13 starts

                  HITTERS TO WATCH

                  Cody Ross 5-for-22 vs. Kuroda
                  Adrian Gonzalez 8-for-26 vs. Kuroda
                  Curtis Granderson 2-for-8 vs. Doubront
                  Robinson Cano 0-for-7 vs. Doubront

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Better late than never: Best late-inning MLB teams
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    “Go the distance”

The ghostly voice in 1989’s Field Of Dreams, one of the most beloved baseball movies, prompted Kevin Costner’s Ray Kinsella to do just that while taking in a ball game at Fenway Park – “Go the distance”.

Sure, the voice was hinting at a long-dead baseball player, but going the distance is quickly becoming a motto of these six teams, who have excelled when the going gets tough.

They’ve played their best ball in the late innings, either shutting opponents down or turning it up at the plate in the final three frames. And, as the schedule wears on and the summer temperatures take their toll, these clubs will have plenty left in the tank to come through for bettors with the game – and the money – on the line.

                    Best late-inning bats

Philadelphia Phillies (.267 BA 7+ inning, averaging 1.52 runs 7+ innings)

There’s a reason why the Phillies have 18 comeback wins this season, including two in their series sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers this week. Philadelphia is the best hitting team in baseball from the seventh inning on, sparked by late-game heroics from speedster Juan Pierre (.383 BA 7+ innings), Carlos Ruiz (.336) and Ty Wigginton (.303), who has recorded 23 of his 36 RBIs in the final three innings.

Cincinnati Reds (.262 BA 7+ innings, averaging 1.55 runs 7+ innings)

Even without slugger Joey Votto, the Big Red Machine continues to chug along. Cincinnati is the hottest team in baseball with seven straight wins and owns the second-best record in the National League at 58-40. Much of that success comes from an ability to break opponents’ backs late in the game. The Reds have bats like Scott Rolen (.339), Jay Bruce (.267) and Votto (.333) to step up in the crunch.

Kansas City Royals (.265 BA 7+ innings, averaging 1.32 runs 7+ innings)

The Texas Rangers are a better late-inning team than the Royals, but how often do you get to read something positive about Kansas City? Despite a 3-7 record in their last 10 outings, the Royals remain one of the better hitting teams from the seventh inning on. In fact, they’re one of the better hitting teams in baseball – period (.267 BA – fifth in the majors). However, K.C. has trouble cashing in those baserunners, hitting into 29 double-plays after the sixth.

                    Best late-inning arms

Oakland Athletics (2.62 ERA 7+ innings, 11 blown saves)

The A’s have left Back To The Future flaming tire treads as they've climbed the standings in July. Following Thursday’s loss to Toronto, Oakland is 16-3 this month with a 2.72 July ERA. That run has lot to do with the Athletics’ knack for slamming the door on foes, with the best late-inning ERA in baseball. The bullpen touts a collective 2.84 ERA, led by relievers Ryan Cook (1.70 ERA) and Grant Balfour (2.93 ERA).

Pittsburgh Pirates (2.80 ERA 7+ innings, six blown saves)

The Bucs' surprise success lies with their underrated staff. Pittsburgh is the biggest breadwinner of the season so far, raking in 21.29 units. The Pirates’ pitching has made bettors feel safe and secure in the late innings while also posting a solid 21-16 record in one-run games. The bullpen has the second-best collective ERA in the bigs (2.58 ERA) and has only blown six saves this season. Closer Joel Hanrahan could be MLB bettors’ MVP this season, with 30 saves and a 2.23 ERA.

Baltimore Orioles (2.91 ERA 7+ innings, 12 blown saves)

It’s no big surprise that the top three late-inning pitching teams are also among the top money teams in baseball. Baltimore jumped out to a hot start in the American League East and has since cooled a bit. But the O’s maintain their steady play in the championship rounds, with the help of a bullpen that ranks second in the AL (3.05 ERA). Baltimore is 19-6 in one-run games and has gone 10-2 in extra-inning affairs this summer.
