NASCAR betting: Crown Royal 400 at the Brickyard preview

It’s back to business for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Sunday. After the last weekend off of the season, the series heads to one of the premier tracks on the circuit, the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, for the Crown Royal Curtiss Shaver 400 at the Brickyard.

While every race pays the same amount of points, winning at Indy carries a little more meaning than other stops. As for narrowing down a favorite this week, you need to start with Chevy drivers.

Chevrolet has a nine-race win streak at the Brickyard that began in 2003. That’s the longest current streak at any track on the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule.

The last two visits to Indy have produced surprise winners. It could be anyone’s race to win again this year, but there have been multiple winners and the favorites this week are among those repeating champions, starting with Jeff Gordon.

Gordon isn’t having the best year but he has a ton of motivation to win. He ranks 17th in points and trails Kasey Kahne, Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman and Joey Logano among wildcard-eligible drivers with just seven races remaining until the field for the Chase is set.

Gordon needs a win bad. The Indiana native leads all active drivers with four victories at the Brickyard and, while he’s struggling elsewhere, he was second here last season and could easily be the class of the field Sunday.

"Growing up here and going to the track numerous times as a kid, there is just something special about each trip here,” Gordon told reporters. “But that special feeling changes quickly when I get out on the track because this place is so challenging. The four corners look the same, but each is unique with different transitions and bumps. As a driver, factoring that in with the few little dips, the way the wind is blowing, the radius and everything else can give you an advantage. But the car has to be good, as well. We've had the best car or one of the best cars in each of the races we've won here.”

Don’t count out Gordon’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson. Johnson has won three of the last six races here. Unlike Gordon, Johnson is solidly in the Chase with two wins and sits fourth in the standings. His 19th place finish here last year keeps Johnson out of the top of the favorites this week, but he will no doubt be a threat Sunday as he tries to tie Gordon’s win record.

“I’m so happy to have had three very special moments there,” Johnson said. “I hope to have a fourth and join some elite company that have won four times there.”

Tony Stewart is the hometown hero having grown up just outside the famous walls of Indy. When it comes to Indy, Stewart always seems more motivated than most. Stewart is also one of the few drivers to have raced both stockcars and open-wheel Indy cars here. He was sixth here last year and with his experience could easily add a third win to his Indy resume Sunday.

“It’s a place that is a momentum-driven track,” Stewart said. “You don’t just have two ends to the race track and two big 180-degree corners. You’ve got four 90-degree corners to negotiate. If you have one bad corner at Indy and if your car’s not right, you’re going to be bad in four corners versus two corners a lap. And with it being two-and-a-half miles, you carry so much speed, if you lose momentum at that track, it just seems like it’s really a big penalty.”

Party Crasher: Kasey Khane has never raced here as a Hendrick Motorsports driver. In his first trip here, Kahne will race with the same team that finished eighth here last year with Mark Martin behind the wheel. Kahne could be a surprise Sunday and go all the way.

Bottom line: The furthest back a race winner has started at Indianapolis was 27th, by Jeff Gordon in 2001. Two drivers have won from the pole: Kevin Harvick in 2003 and Jimmie Johnson in 2008.

Canadian Bacon: Saturday's CFL preview and picks
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

      Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Saskatchewan Roughriders (-4, 56)

The Saskatchewan Roughriders (3-1) boast the best record in the CFL as they get ready to host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at Mosaic Stadium.

Saskatchewan was a perfect 3-0 before being caught up in a wild overtime affair versus Calgary and bowing to the Stampeders on the road, 41-38 last week. The 41 points allowed were more than the 37 surrendered by the Riders through the first three games of the season.

Hamilton (2-2) is trying to build on its impressive 39-24 home win over Montreal last week. With the victory, the Tiger-Cats created a log-jam at the top of the East Division with the Alouettes and Argonauts.

Quarterback Henry Burris, who is in his first season with the Tiger-Cats after spending the previous seven campaigns with Calgary, leads the league in touchdown passes with 11 and is carrying the best efficiency rating (113.9) into Week 5 action. The pivot is well on his way to eclipsing his TD pass total from all of last year when he tossed just 20.

      Betting notes:

      - Saskatchewan is 4-0-0 ATS this season.

      - The over is 4-0 in Hamilton’s last four games overall.

Pick: Nearly 65 percent of Covers Contest players think Saskatchewan will cover.

      B.C. Lions at Calgary Stampeders (-1.5, 58)

The defending Grey Cup Champions find themselves tied with Calgary for third place in the West with identical 2-2 records as the two squads try to push the other deeper into the basement when they clash at McMahon Stadium.

Lions signal-caller Travis Lulay is one of four quarterbacks to have thrown for more than 1,000 yards, but among those pivots he has the lowest completion rate (.634) and efficiency rating (89.0). Lulay has been picked off five times (only Blue Bombers QB Alex Brink has more) to go along with six TD passes.

The Stampeders snapped a brief two-game slide on July 19 with a thrilling 41-38 overtime decision against Saskatchewan at home, preventing the Roughriders from remaining undefeated after four weeks of action.

Quarterback Kevin Glenn has six aerial majors and is completing his passes at a 71 percent clip, the highest among active starters.

Calgary is also getting it done on special teams. Kick returner Larry Taylor is pacing the entire league in combined yards with 1,046 over four games.

      Betting notes:

      - The under is 8-0 in the Lions’ last eight road games.

      - B.C. is 3-11-1 ATS its last 15 meetings with Calgary.

Pick: Nearly 58 percent of Covers Contest players believe Calgary will cover.

Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

Jordan Zimmerman, Washington Nationals (7-6, 2.31 ERA)

There hasn’t been a more consistent starter in the month of July than Zimmerman. He hasn’t allowed more than one earned run in each of his last six starts and boasts a ridiculous 0.87 ERA for the month. It’s hard to believe he won’t continue to dominate in his next outing against the ice-cold Brewers.

Johnny Cueto, Cincinnati Reds (12-5, 2.23 ERA)

Cueto has the lowest ERA in the NL and has picked up wins in each of his last three starts. At this point in the season, Cueto has to be considered as one of the frontrunners for the NL Cy Young Award. He has a chance to continue that momentum against the struggling Rockies.

            Slumping

Henderson Alvarez, Toronto Blue Jays (6-7, 4.61 ERA)

With fireballer Brandon Morrow on the mend, Alvarez could get the boot from the rotation if he doesn’t have a strong outing against the Tigers. Alvarez allowed seven runs on eight hits over 5 2-3 innings pitched in his last start against Boston, but somehow walked away with the victory thanks to a disgraceful performance from the Red Sox pitching staff. He’s allowed 14 earned runs in just 17 innings in July.

Jon Lester, Boston Red Sox (5-8, 5.46 ERA)

Lester’s last three starts have been an absolute disaster. The lefty got booed off the mound at Fenway Park after the Blue Jays roughed him up for 11 runs in just four innings Sunday. His previous two starts against the White Sox and Yankees were equally as dreadful. Add up Lester’s July numbers and the results are staggering. Hold your breath - 22 earned runs and a 10.42 ERA in just 17 innings pitched.

Red Sox at Yankees: What bettors need to know
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at New York Yankees (-179, 9)

The gulf between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox is as wide as it's been in years, evidenced by the 11.5 games separating the first- and last-place teams in the American League East. In any other year, Saturday's matchup between ace left-handers CC Sabathia of the Yankees and Boston's Jon Lester would be among the more highly anticipated duels. But Lester, like his team, has been in a deep funk and has not looked capable of reversing New York's dominance this year.

The Yankees pummeled the Red Sox into submission in Friday's series opener, using three homers to account for eight of their 10 runs to improve to 6-1 against Boston. The power displayed overshadowed Ichiro Suzuki's home debut with New York as the Yankees stretched their lead in the AL East to 8 1/2 games over Baltimore. The Red Sox have dropped six of their last seven to fall two games under .500 at the 100-game mark of the season.

              TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, FOX

PITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH Jon Lester (5-8, 5.46 ERA) vs. Yankees LH C.C. Sabathia (10-3, 3.30)

Lester has lost three straight starts and hit rock bottom in his last outing, getting hammered by the Toronto Blue Jays for four homers and 11 runs - both career worsts - in four-plus innings. He has failed to get through 4 1/3 innings during the three-game skid, allowing 22 runs on 25 hits. Lester is 8-4 in 18 career starts against the Yankees, but was roughed up for five runs in 4 1/3 innings on July 8.

Sabathia will be making his third start since coming off the disabled list due to a groin strain. He pitched six scoreless innings against Toronto on July 17 and gave up three runs in seven innings at Oakland on Sunday, only to see the bullpen blow the lead. The burly lefty is 7-9 with a 4.14 ERA in 20 career starts against Boston, including a 1-4 mark in five starts last year.

              TRENDS:

              * Over is 3-0-1 in Lester's last four road starts vs. Yankees.
              * Over is 6-1-1 in the last eight meetings in New York.
              * Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
              * Red Sox are 4-1 in Lester's last five road starts vs. Yankees.
              * Red Sox are 10-4 in the last 14 meetings in New York.
              * Over is 7-3-1 in Lesters last 11 starts vs. Yankees.
              * Yankees are 1-4 in Sabathia's last five starts vs. Red Sox.
              * Red Sox are 1-6 in the last seven meetings.
              * Red Sox are 0-4 in Lester's last four starts vs. Yankees.

              WALK-OFFS

              1. The Yankees have hit 19 homers and outscored the Red Sox 59-35 this season.

              2. New York became the first team in the majors to win 60 games. It marked the third time in four seasons the Yankees won 60 games by the 100-game mark.

              3. Friday's series opener lasted only 2 hours, 41 minutes - only the fifth game in the last 61 meetings that the teams have finished in under three hours.
