    Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Brazil was up 27-17 after first quarter, but Team USA won 80-69 in its second exhibition game before the Olympics. Brazil has six guys who are either in the NBA or used to be. Pretty good team.

-- Has to be at least a little tension with Mike D'Antoni on the bench for Team USA when Carmelo Anthony helped run him out of New York.

-- Kevin Youkilis had single/two doubles in his first three AB's playing as a visitor in Fenway Park, but Pale Hose lost 5-1 to Boston.

-- Former Virginia Tech hoop coach Seth Greenberg signed on with ESPN as a studio analyst. Very good get; he's worked for CBS College Sports in the past and is an excellent analyst.

-- Robert Griffin III hasn't signed his contract yet; training camp starts in a week. If he's starting in Superdome September 9, he better sign soon.

-- If the Patriots don't want Wes Welker, send him to St Louis.

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Looking at CF coaching changes..........

Terry Bowden, Akron-- Bowden's career record is 47-17-1; Zips are 5-31 the last three years. Returning QB hit 47.9% of passes LY. Yikes.

Rich Rodriguez, Arizona-- RichRod was 15-22 in three forgettable years at Michigan, but he was 60-26 before that. Arizona seems like a better fit.

Todd Graham, Arizona State-- Graham is on his 4th stop in his seven years as HC; he makes Larry Brown look like Walter Alston. ASU is 21-28 in last four seasons, so maybe losing seven starters on both sides of ball ain't bad.
Jim McElwain, Colorado State-- Going from DC at Alabama to coaching in Fort Collins is major culture shock. Rams have had one winning season last six years, and that was a 7-6 season. This is a tough job.

Tim Beckman, Illinois-- Best place to step in as HC is following guy who is a great recruiter but a lousy coach, which is what Beckman is doing here, so if he's any good, he could make a big splash early with the Illini.

Charlie Weis, Kansas-- Why do people keep hiring this guy? Should never have fired Mangino. Former Cowboy coach Dave Campo is the DC here.

Bob Davie, New Mexico-- Now we'll find out if its possible for Lobos to win (it is, they won with Franchione, when Stoney Case was QB) on the gridiron. Bob Davie is a solid coach, will be missed on TV.

Larry Fedora, North Carolina-- Another situation where talent has been put together, but never coached to its potential, because of off-field issues. This is good chance for Fedora to show off his offense and win big.

Urban Meyer, Ohio State-- Not 100% sure Meyer is the right guy, though for short term he certainly is. Doesn't stay anywhere too long; went 8-5 in his 6th/last season in Gainesville. Stayed two years at his other two stops.

Bill O'Brien, Penn State-- Not sure if this is the hardest job in America, but if he can straighten out the QB position and win, he'll have a lot of grateful people pulling for him. At least PSU finally has a competent QB coach.

Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M-- 35-17 in four years at Houston, but 14-11 on road in C-USA, and SEC is slightly tougher (ya think??) than C-USA. This has always been a hard job, and now its that much harder.

Jim Mora Jr, UCLA-- Coached Falcons/Seahawks, now tries to revive team that alumnus Neuheisel couldn't. This would've been an easier job had USC not gotten QB Barkley back for another year. Mora needs to beat them.

Mike Leach, Washington State-- Most interesting hire of offseason. Texas Tech fired him for no good reason. His team will score lot of points, and are going to win games. Pullman won't be any fun to visit in near future.

Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            STREAKING

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (4-3, 3.05 ERA)

Remember when Wood was fast-tracked up the Reds minor league system? Remember how good that guy was before he started stealing designer t-shirts from the ****? Cincy turfed the kid but the Cubs are really one club’s garbage is another cellar-dweller’s future ace.

Chicago is 4-0 in Wood’s last four starts (three as underdog) and the lefty has produced a quality start in six of his last seven trips to the bump.

Bartolo Colon, Oakland Athletics (6-7, 3.80 ERA)

Bartolo missed a start or two at the end of June but he’s looked great since coming off the DL. The 39-year-old has allowed just two earned runs and one walk over his last 14 2/3 innings pitched. The A’s are 4-1 in his last four outings and the under is 5-1 in his last six appearances.

            SLUMPING

Erik Bedard, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-10, 4.80 ERA)

This Canadian southpaw is the weakness link in an otherwise respectable Pittsburgh starting rotation. The Bucs are winless in Bedard’s last five starts and the over is 3-1-1 over the same stretch. He’s given up four or more runs in each of his last three trips to the hill.

Randy Wolf, Milwaukee Brewers (2-6, 5.80 ERA)

There’s got to be a collective groan coming from the Brewer’s dugout on days Wolf takes the mound. The veteran lefty has allowed four or more runs in four straight starts and Milwaukee is 2-8 in his last 10 appearances.

Wolf carries a bloated 1.42 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) since the beginning of June into Tuesday’s start.

Rounding the bases: The best bets in the big leagues
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Every week we take a moment to look at the best and worst bets in baseball from the past seven days.

              Hot team: Atlanta Braves

              Week’s record: 3-0
Upcoming sked: vs. San Francisco, at Washington

The Braves lost their most effective starting pitcher (Brandon Beachy) but almost a month to the day later they may have found a temporary replacement in Ben Sheets. The former Brewer ace hadn’t pitched for two seasons before toeing the rubber on Sunday. Sheets pitched great and Atlanta won its seventh straight game.

The lineup is balanced, the rotation is reliable and the bullpen is improving. Look out Washington – the Braves might just finish first in the NL West yet.

              Cold team: Minnesota Twins

              Week’s record: 0-3
Upcoming sked: vs. Baltimore, at Kansas City

The Twins are on a 5-game losing skid and are just 1-7 over their last eight. They’ve used 11 different starting pitchers this season and their rotation has surrendered more home runs than any other team in baseball. Other than that, everything’s fine in Minnesota.

              Over team: New York Yankees

              O/U record: 38-49-1
Upcoming sked: vs. Toronto, at Oakland

The big bats in the Bronx Bombers lineup are starting to heat up in a big way. New York has scored five or more runs in seven straight games, including eight runs off Jered Weaver and the Angels on Sunday. Curtis Granderson has homered in two straight games and is on a five-game hitting streak.

              Under team: Colorado Rockies

              O/U record: 48-38-2
Upcoming sked: vs. Pittsburgh, at San Diego

The Rockies fragile, four-man pitching staff has been responsible for a lot of the club’s overs this season. Things have been a bit more respectable in July (3.98 ERA) and the offense has dropped off a bit too. The Rockies have scored just 31 runs in 11 July games. The under, by the way, is 8-1 in Colorado's last nine contests.

Tuesday's betting tips: Cubs up 10 units over last 16 games

                    Weather to watch

Mets-Nationals: The temperature is expected to be in the high 90s and will feel like triple-digit heat with the humidity in Washington tonight. Same thing at Kauffman Stadium for the Mariners-Royals game.

White Sox-Red Sox: The wind is expected to be around 14 mph toward the Green Monster during Game 2 of the all Sox affair. Oddsmakers have the total set at 10.

                    Who’s hot?

Chicago Cubs – The Cubbies are on a four-game win streak and are 12-4 since June 25. You’d be up $1008 (10.08 units) if you bet $100 on Chicago during the 16-game stretch.

Oakland Athletics – The A’s are also riding a four-game unbeaten streak, after sweeping the Twins over the weekend. Oakland is now 9-1 over its last 10 contests.

                    Who’s not?

Kansas City Royals – K.C. is 2-8 over its last 10. Oddsmakers have made the Royals chalk just three times in the club’s last 20 matchups.

                    Key stat

19 – Robinson Cano has hit safely in 19 straight games after going 2-for-3 on Monday night against the Jays. The Yankees clean-up hitter is batting .413 since the streak began on June 24.

                    Game of the Day

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox

                    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joey Votto, Cincinnati Reds – Votto, the Reds best player and the favorite to win the National League MVP, will undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus. He’s expected to miss three to four weeks while he recovers. Votto is batting .342 with 14 HRs and 49 RBIs and a sick .465 OBP (on-base percentage).

                    Notable quotable

“There have been people that said this wasn’t a football scandal. Well it was more than a football scandal, much more than a football scandal. It was that but much more. And we’ll have to figure out exactly what the right penalties are. I don’t know that past precedent makes particularly good sense in this case, because it’s really an unprecedented problem.” – NCAA president Mark Emmert told PBS on Monday about the Penn State scandal.

                    Notes and tips

Roy Halladay makes his return to the Philadelphia Phillies after missing the last seven weeks with a strained lat muscle. The two-time Cy Young winner was going through an up-and-down season before going on the disabled list on May 27. He’s 4-5 with a very un-Halladay-like 3.98 ERA. Charlie Manuel expects the 35-year-old Philly ace to go six innings in his first start back on Tuesday.

FC Paris Saint-Germain is a -275 favorite to win Ligue 1 this upcoming season at PinnacleSports. Pinny also has a yes, no prop on PSG winning League 1 (Yes -275, No +238). Why are we talking about the French football league? Well, this club has money, a lot of it, and has brought three of the best players from the Italian league over during the summer transfer season. Defender Thiago Silva, winger Ezequiel Lavezzi and Swedish center forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to follow. That’s four (Javier Pastore last summer) elite footballers FC Paris has added over the last 12 months. Keep in mind PSG didn’t win the league last season and hasn't finished at the top of the table since 1994.
