Reeling Rangers End Series With Minnesota Twins

Like sand through an hourglass, so go the Philadelphia Phillies' chances of reaching the postseason.

The first half of the 2012 season comes to a close for both the Phillies and Atlanta Braves Sunday afternoon when the clubs complete a 3-game set at Citizens Bank Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. (ET) with TBS providing the national broadcast. A pair of young right-handers will perform the initial mound duties as Jair Jurrjens gets the ball for the Braves against Vance Worley of the Phils.

Just as time is starting to run out on their playoff hopes, so are the excuses for why the Phillies might fall short despite entering the season as prohibitive -185 favorites to win the NL East and +170 chalk to take the NL pennant. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley are both off the DL after missing most of the first half of the season with assorted injuries, and ace Roy Halladay should rejoin the rotation within the next week or so.

Howard made his season debut in a 5-0 loss to the Braves in the series opener and stroked a pair of hits including a double. As much as the Phillies missed both him and Utley the first three months, the real problem has been the bullpen which reared its ugly head once again in Friday's loss by allowing all five Atlanta runs after the game was scoreless through seven innings.

Philadelphia relievers rank 29th in the majors with a 4.84 ERA and had blown 12 of 30 save opportunities entering Saturday night's tilt that was still pending. The contest was a toss-up on the money line and carried a 9-run total that leaned 'under' at the majority of books monitored by Don Best's Pro Odds.

Worley will be trying to bounce back from one of the worst starts of his young career when he walks to the mound on Sunday. The Mets reached him for six runs on 10 hits in four short innings last Tuesday in New York, and it marked Philly's fifth loss in six starts since Worley returned from his own DL stint in early June. He will be facing the Braves for the first time in 2012, and won his only start vs. them in 2011.

Jurrjens will also be facing the Phils for the first time this season and won both of his 2011 assignments against them. He had severe command problems in April when he walked 10 in 16-1/3 innings, but his time spent in the minors seems to have corrected that problem with Jurrjens issuing just four free passes in 13-1/3 innings since returning to the big league club.

Friday's victory for Atlanta evened the season series between the two clubs at two wins apiece. Three of the first four matchups stayed 'under' the total.

Reeling Rangers Send Oswalt To Mound Vs. Twins
The Texas Rangers will turn to veteran Roy Oswalt in hopes of heading into the all-star break on a winning note when they close their home set with the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Minnesota counters with rookie Cole De Vries in the 7:05 p.m. (ET) start.

Minnesota's 5-1 upset Friday night marked the fifth straight loss for Texas who was a $1.60 favorite in the contest. The Rangers were even heavier favorites for Saturday's tilt at -180 with Derek Holland making his first start in over a month following time on the DL due to a sore left shoulder.

Oswalt is coming off a pounding by the White Sox in Chicago on Tuesday. The right-hander allowed 13 hits in his second consecutive outing, and three of them left the yard as the Pale Hose plated 11 (9 earned) in chasing Oswalt before he could get through the fifth inning. Following an impressive debut against the Rockies on June 22, Oswalt has surrendered 26 hits and 14 earned runs in 10-2/3 innings his last two assignments.

De Vries, an undrafted free agent and Minnesota native, was used in relief on Wednesday after making four starts for the Twins previously. He was used primarily in relief the past two minor league seasons before being shifted to the rotation this year at Triple-A Rochester.

The win on Friday stopped the Twins' 4-game skid against the Rangers that included being swept at home back in mid-April. Entering Saturday, all four games between the clubs this season failed to reach the total.

Yanks-Sox conclude 1st half of season Sunday

        NEW YORK YANKEES (51-33)

        at BOSTON RED SOX (43-42)

First pitch: Sunday, 8:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Boston -115, New York +105, Total: 10

After snapping a five-game win streak on Saturday night, the Red Sox look to end the first half of their season with a series split against the rival Yankees on Sunday night.

The Yankees sit comfortably atop the AL East, thanks to a 22-8 record in their past 30 games. They are also 4-1 against Boston this season (all at Fenway Park), scoring 42 runs in these five contests. For Sunday’s capper to the four-game set, New York will send Ivan Nova to the mound in search of his 10th win. The Yankees are 12-4 when Nova takes the hill this year, including 8-1 in his nine road starts. The Red Sox counter with lefty Jon Lester, who has been horrible at Fenway Park, carting a 5.60 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in nine home starts, where the Sox are just 3-6. By the way these two clubs are playing lately, plus the offensive injuries piling up for Boston, most notably Dustin Pedroia (wrist, on DL) and Will Middlebrooks (hamstring), the pick here is NEW YORK getting plus money.

This rare four-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Yankees:

BOSTON is 8-22 (-20.3 Units) against the money line vs. a very good bullpen whose ERA is 3.33 or better this season. The average score was BOSTON 4.1, OPPONENT 5.4 - (Rating = 4*).

Nova (9-3, 4.05 ERA, 1.38 WHIP) has been strong in his past three starts, sporting a 2.84 ERA and 17 K’s in 19 innings. He has allowed 26 base-runners (1.37 WHIP) in this span, though. Nova continues to be much stronger on the road this season with a 3.55 ERA and 1.30 WHIP, fanning 44 batters and walking just 14. He will be making his fifth career start in this rivalry, and his numbers versus the Sox have been pretty horrible (5.91 ERA, 1.50 WHIP). However, when he faced them on April 20, he threw six strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out five and walking none. With the All-Star Break starting Monday, the Yankees won’t hesitate to use their bullpen, especially due to their 3.12 ERA and 1.25 WHIP for the season. These numbers are even more impressive on the road (2.48 ERA, 1.21 WHIP), where they are 9-4 with 16 saves in 20 chances.

Lester (5-5, 4.33 ERA, 1.31 WHIP) has mediocre numbers versus the Yanks in his career (4.15 ERA, 1.40 WHIP), but he has a personal 8-3 record against them in 17 starts. However, his team has lost three straight times Lester faced New York, including last September in New York, when he allowed eight runs in just 2.2 innings of work. The Red Sox are just 7-10 in Lester’s 17 starts this season, as he has allowed 4+ runs in eight of these outings. But the last loss on July 3 in Oakland was no fault of his. Lester held the A’s to just one run on four hits, walking one and striking out nine in 6.2 innings. For the season, he has 88 strikeouts and just 28 walks in 108 innings. His bullpen has also been strong this season (3.81 ERA, 1.19 WHIP), especially in Fenway Park, where Red Sox relievers cart a 3.18 ERA and 1.16 WHIP.
