Yankees And Red Sox Renew Rivalry At Fenway Park

The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees have played just two of their eventual six series meetings this season, with the rivalry resuming Friday night at Fenway Park.

We begin with a Thursday night update with Cincinnati a $1.46 favorite at San Diego on the Don Best odds screen. The total is a low 6½ and even shaded to the ‘under.’

This is an expected pitcher’s duel with the Reds’ Mat Latos (7-2, 4.42 ERA) against Edinson Volquez (5-7, 3.68 ERA). These players were traded for each other last December along with catcher Yasmani Grandal, first baseman Yonder Alonso and right-hander Brad Boxberger going to the Padres.

San Diego is 33-50 on the year, but has won 5-straight with Grandal hitting four homers in that span after being called up. Latos is facing his former team for the first time, but has a solid 3.31 ERA in 31 career starts at Petco Park.

Volquez has a 3.45 home ERA this year versus 4.02 away. Don Best MLB analyst Kenny White likes both starters to be motivated and perform well against their former clubs.

Our look at Friday night starts with the Cubs at the New York Mets. Johan Santana goes for the home team and is a $1.70 favorite with a total of 7½

Chicago’s Travis Wood (3-3, 3.05 ERA) has been under a lot of pressure since being acquired from Cincinnati before the season. He has really come on of late, allowing just one earned run over his last 20 innings of work and winning his last three starts.

The 25-year-old right-hander had a 4.84 ERA last year with Cincinnati, but was unlucky with a Batting Average on Balls in Play (BABIP) of over .300. That stat this year is just .219 with his luck turning around. Don Best’s White sees his ERA going up from this point.

The Cubs defeated Santana 6-1 at home on June 25, with Wood throwing seven scoreless innings.

Santana (6-4, 2.76 ERA) got the loss against the Cubs despite allowing just two earned over six innings. He’s been lights-out in eight Citi Field starts (4-1, 1.16 ERA).

White sees a betting result reversal from the last start between these pitchers, going with the Mets and the ‘over.’

Switching backs to the Yanks and Red Sox, Boston is a $1.25 favorite with a pretty big total of 9½. Hiroki Kuroda (8-7, 3.17 ERA) will square off against Josh Beckett (4-7, 4.06 ERA).

Kuroda is coming off arguably his best effort of the season, striking out 11 Chicago White Sox hitters and throwing seven scoreless. He had a 1.98 ERA in six June starts and the ‘under’ is 11-2 in his last 13 overall.

Beckett recently came off a DL stint for shoulder inflammation. He surrendered two earned runs over six innings at Seattle in his first start back, but his usual 94-95 mph fastball has diminished some this year.

The 32-year-old right-hander is 7-3 in his last 10 starts against the Yankees, but with a lofty 5.37 ERA. He is 14-7 lifetime against them.

Boston went 2-5 in its just-completed road trip, getting swept by Oakland in a series that ended Wednesday.

White believes the Red Sox are good enough to make a run at the Yankees in the AL East despite currently being 7½-games behind. They are expecting several key players back from injury soon, including outfielders Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury.

Red-hot Pirates seek 5th straight win hosting Giants

        SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS (45-38)

        at PITTSBURGH PIRATES (46-36)

First pitch: Friday, 7:05 p.m. EDT
Line: Pittsburgh -140, San Francisco +130, Total: 9

The slumping Giants hope to turn things around when they start a three-game set Friday night in Pittsburgh, but it won’t be easy against the sizzling Pirates with eight wins in their past nine games.

San Francisco just got swept in Washington, giving the club five losses in the past six contests. The Nationals scored 24 runs on 37 hits in the three-game sweep, but the Giants have a good chance to stop the losing skid with lefty Barry Zito, who has been masterful in his past two starts (13 IP, 1 ER). On the other hand, Pirates left-hander Erik Bedard has been roughed up in his past two outings (10.2 IP, 9 ER) and the Pirates have lost each of his past four starts, where he is 0-3 with a 7.65 ERA. Another thing going against Bedard is the Giants success against southpaws this season, as they are 16-9 (.640) versus lefty starters. And considering they have won 13 of the past 19 meetings with the Bucs, the play here is significant underdog SAN FRANCISCO to prevail.

This two-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Giants:

Play On - Road underdogs with a money line of +100 or higher (SAN FRANCISCO) - poor NL offensive team (<=4.1 runs/game) against a team with a very good bullpen (ERA<=3.33), with a bullpen that averages less than 2.75 innings per game. (42-32 since 1997.) (56.8%, +25.6 units. Rating = 2*).

Zito (6-6, 3.84 ERA, 1.40 WHIP) has not pitched well on the road this season with a 4.93 ERA and 1.54 WHIP. This includes an 8.84 ERA in his past four road starts. He has just 22 K’s and 19 walks in these 38.1 road innings. However, Zito has thrived in his two career starts in Pittsburgh, allowing just four runs and 11 hits in 11.1 innings, fanning nine and walking only two. Zito has also led his team to three straight victories over the Pirates, posting a 2.89 ERA in these three starts. And although his team has lost three straight, the Giants still had 32 hits and a .296 BA in the defeats. San Francisco’s bullpen couldn’t hold onto the lead on Thursday, but the relievers have been pretty decent this year with a 3.50 ERA and 30 saves in 38 chances.

Bedard (4-9, 4.57 ERA, 1.48 WHIP) has struggled in his past two starts, but both of those were on the road. He has been much more comfortable at PNC Park this year, carting a 2.31 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in seven home starts, leading Pittsburgh to a 4-3 record. Overall, the Pirates are a whopping 27-13 (.675) at home this season, the best mark in the majors. They have won 16 of their past 19 at home. Bedard has not allowed a single home run in 39 PNC Park innings, which is a big difference from his eight homers served up in 43.2 innings away from home. The longballs are a big reason for his team’s 2-7 record in these nine road starts. Bedard has made just one career start versus San Francisco, and that occurred way back in 2004, when he allowed no earned runs in five innings, walking five and fanning three. Moving back to the present, he hopes to have great help from his offense that is batting .325 with 7.6 runs per games and 16 HR in the past nine games. Pittsburgh’s bullpen has also been strong in 2012, posting a 2.70 ERA and 1.23 WHIP. These numbers dip to an even more impressive 2.37 ERA and 1.13 WHIP at PNC Park.
