Friday’s betting tips: Youkilis has ChiSox surging

    Who’s hot

MLB: Over is 16-7 in the New York Yankees' last 23 games in Boston.

MLB: Athletics are 20-8 in their last 28 games as a home favorite.

CFL: Blue Bombers are 21-8-2 ATS in their last 31 games as an underdog.

WNBA: Connecticut Sun are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.

    Who’s not

MLB: Houston is 3-11 in its last 14 games against Milwaukee.

MLB: Mariners are 23-51 in their last 74 games as a road underdog.

CFL: Alouettes are 0-7 ATS in their last seven games as a favorite.

WNBA: Liberty are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games as an underdog.

    Key stat

90 – The Washington Mystics scored 90 points for the first time this season in a win over Phoenix that snapped a five-game losing streak both straight up and against the spread. The Mystics now face the San Antonio, which has scored at least 90 points in four of its last six.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Buck Pierce, Winnipeg Blue Bombers – Winnipeg’s quarterback was forced to leave last week’s blowout loss to the B.C. Lions with a knee injury. He says he’s “confident” he’ll be able to start Friday against Montreal, but has been spotted limping around for most of this week.

    Game of the day

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox (-115, 9.5)

    Notable quotable

“Subconsciously, I’m probably pretty stressed out right now but I try not to show it. Obviously, the pressure is there, if I thought too much about it, it would become too much, but if you shield yourself and listen only to those around you, you can manage. And they give you the confidence you need.” – Andy Murray about playing in front of the British crowd at Wimbledon. He’s trying to become the first British man to make the tournament’s final since 1938 and is a -227 favorite over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Friday’s semifinal.

    Notes and tips

Kevin Youkilis hit what turned out to be the game-winning homer for the Chicago White Sox in a 2-1 win over Texas on Thursday. That win moved the club to 7-3 since it acquired Youkilis from the Boston Red Sox. "He has an energy he brings -- the competitiveness he has. It's infectious, and it's a good thing for our guys to see in a guy who has been a winner," White Sox manager Robin Ventura told reporters.

Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have faced each other 26 times, but Friday will be the first time they will square off on grass. Djokovic is 12-14 in those meetings and is a -250 favorite against Federer +180.

The Toronto Raptors acquired point guard Kyle Lowry from the Houston Rockets in exchange for a future lottery pick and Gary Forbes. Meanwhile, ESPN reports that veteran point guard Jason Kidd will sign a three-year $9 million-deal with the Knicks instead of inking with the Dallas Mavericks again.

It's possible Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard could rejoin the team this weekend, although it is by no means a certainty. "I guess it's possible," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Thursday afternoon. "But we'll see how he feels the next day or so." Howard, who had left Achilles surgery last fall, has played six games in rehab assignments with Class A Lakewood and Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He is hitting a combined .471 (8-for-17) with two doubles, one home run, nine RBIs, three walks and three strikeouts.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Former Giant WR Amani Toomer said on his Sirius radio show that he thinks Tony Romo is a better QB than Eli Manning. Alrighty then.

-- ESPN.com reported that the Seattle Seahawks travelled 29,912 miles on their eight road trips LY. Steelers travelled 5,682 miles on theirs.

-- Since I know you're wondering, there are 24,722 Subway sub shops in this great world of ours, 14,098 McDonald's.

-- Dan Haren (back) is on DL for the first time in his career.

-- Braves' 3B Juan Francisco saw 28 pitches in his first two AB against Matt Garza. Thats two full innings for some of the better pitchers.

-- RA Dickey allowed a first-inning run Thursday for the first time in his 17 starts this season.

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: NFC knowledge with the weekend here........

Its never too early to start thinking about football; with that in mind, here is some food for thought, as another summer weekend is here.......

Arizona-- 13-19 since Kurt Warner retired; 5-12-2 vs spread last 19 games when they were the favorite.

Atlanta-- 43-21 in regular season under Mike Smith, but 0-3 in playoff tilts. Only once in last decade have they had negative turnover ratio.

Carolina-- Improved from #32 to #13 in passing yards LY, with rookie QB playing. Last five years, they're 6-0 vs spread as a road favorite.

Chicago-- Last five years, they're 9-15-1 vs spread as home favorites; they are minus-38 in sacks last two years, allowing 105 in 32 games (3.28).

Dallas-- Since '04, they're 4-15-1 vs spread as home favorites vs divisional foes. Last two years, underdogs are 23-8-1 vs spread in their games.
Detroit-- 10-6 mark LY was first winning record since '99. Since '04, they're 12-6 vs spread as home fave in non-division games, 3-5-2 in division tilts.

Green Bay-- An amazing +58 in turnovers last three years; allowed 412 ypg LY, most in NFL. Covered 17 of 24 home games last three years.

Minnesota-- Led NFL in sacks two of last three years, but they're 9-23 last two years. Since '06, they're 3-10-1 vs spread as home dogs.

NJ Giants-- Covered four of last five regular season games twice in last five years; both times, they won Super Bowl. Finished last in NFL in rushing yardage, were 7-7 after 14 games, but got into tournament, then won it.

New Orleans-- Super Bowl season is only time in last seven years they had a positive turnover ratio. Strange year looms, with Payton not coaching.
Philadelphia-- 8-8 LY despite hideous minus-14 turnover ratio; finished LY on 4-0 roll- does momentum from that carry over into 2012?

St Louis-- 15-65 SU last five years; favored in only five of last 32 games at home. 20-32 vs spread as road underdog the last eight years.

San Francisco-- +28 in turnovers LY, after being minus-44 previous seven years combined. Have five primetime games this year, three at home.

Seattle-- Went 7-9 LY despite a +9 turnover ratio. Since 2005, are 11-4 as home favorite in divisional games.

Tampa Bay--Once-proud Buc defense finished last in NFL rushing defense twice in last three years, during which time they're 5-17-1 against spread as home underdogs. New coach Schiano was an unusual hire.

Washington-- 15-33 last three years, with minus-29 turnover ratio; giving ball to rookie QB RGIII, hoping he can replicate Cam Newton's 2011.

Public opinion: Rangers look set to snap slump

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Thursday.

        MLB:

Minnesota Twins at Texas Rangers (-135, N/A)

The Texas Rangers were swept away by the Chicago White Sox on Thursday and have now lost four straight games. The Rangers have now lost four straight just twice this season and early bettors expect them to end the skid as they head home to face Francisco Liriano and the Twins.

        Consensus: Rangers, 62 percent

        CFL:

        Hamilton Tiger-Cats at B.C. Lions (-7, 54)

The defending champions picked up right where they left off last season by drilling the Blue Bombers in a rematch of the Grey Cup final. Wideout Geroy Simon became the league’s all-time leading receiver in that game and the Lions put up 358 net yards. Hamilton’s defense could be in trouble here.

        Consensus: Lions, 69 percent

        WNBA:

Connecticut Sun at Tulsa Shock (+9, 164)

The Sun look to bounce back from a tough overtime loss to Seattle at home as 12-point favorites. Their offense should have a field day against Tulsa’s defense that allows more than 83 points per game.

        Consensus: Sun, 67 percent

          Week 2

          Friday, July 6

Winnipeg (0-1) @ Montreal (0-1)-- Alouettes won two of three in this rivalry LY, with three games decided by total of nine points. Bombers (+8) won 25-23 in their only visit here. Average total in the three games was 52.3. Both teams got spanked out west last week; Winnipeg was held to 132 passing yards by the Lions in 33-16 loss (+7.5). CFL

          Week 2

          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Makin' Canadian bacon: Week 2 CFL preview and picks
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The East Division was supposed to be better this year. The West Division made it clear in Week 1 that they’re going to have to prove it.

The West went 4-0 straight up (SU) and against the spread (ATS) and now the East comes limping into Week 2 licking its wounds.

Winnipeg Bluebombers vs. Montreal Alouettes (-7, 51.5)

It’s hard to believe that Montreal has failed to cover in nine straight games after last week’s 38-10 loss at Calgary. The Als have also lost five in a row straight up with their last win coming on Oct. 16, 2011 against Hamilton.

Speaking of five in a row, that’s the same money streak the Bluebombers have going against Montreal. Winnipeg looks like it has its gritty defense back after a 33-10 loss at B.C. last week. It was a performance that was better than the score indicated on the road against the defending Grey Cup champs.

Bombers QB Buck Pierce is banged up, as usual, after leaving last week’s game with a thigh injury. But Alex Brink is an OK backup if he has to fill in and seven points seems like too many to give a team that never seems to give much.

          Pick: Winnipeg +7

          Hamilton Tiger-Cats vs. B.C. Lions (-7, 53)

Hamilton started the season as a 3-1 Grey Cup favorite. A week later and it looks like this team is going to need more time to gel than oddsmakers originally anticipated.

Hamilton’s new passing attack with Henry Burris taking the snaps didn’t go quite as planned in a 43-16 loss to Saskatchewan. Burris threw for 284 yards with no TDs and one INT.

So why aren’t the Kitty-Cats more of an underdog on the road against a B.C. team that looks as sharp as it did last year?

Because Hamilton gives the Lions a hard time for some strange reason. The Ti-Cats won both meetings last year and have covered the spread in six of the last seven clashes.

          Still.

          Pick: Lions -7

Calgary Stampeders vs. Toronto Argonauts (4, 48.5)

Canadian running back Jon Cornish bowled his way to 86 yards and two touchdowns in a convincing win over Montreal last week. Not sure the Stamps are going to have the same success against an Argos defense that likes to play physical and allowed just 15 points in a four-point loss last week.

Don’t count on there being too many games this season where the Argos allow fewer than 20 points and end up losing the game with Ricky Ray running the offense.

          Pick: Toronto +4

Edmonton Eskimos vs. Saskatchewan Roughriders (-4.5, 48)

There might not be any team that wants to win this week as badly as the Roughriders. They went 0-10 against Western opponents last season and desperately hope to end that trend in their home opener this season.

Saskatchewan seemed to easily rack up 43 points on Hamilton last week and QB Darian Durant was named Offensive Player of the Week with four TDs and a whack of yards. Meanwhile, the Eskies struggled in the post-Ricky Ray era on offense against Toronto and they know they’re in for a battle in Regina.

          Pick: Saskatchewan

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers (6-4, 2.65 ERA)

The Dodgers have won four of Kershaw’s last six starts, but could have been perfect over that stretch if they gave him a little run support. He allowed just three runs in those two losses. The lefty responded with a win over the Mets, holding them to one earned run in seven innings while striking out nine. He has at least seven strikeouts in five consecutive starts.

Travis Wood, Chicago Cubs (3-3, 3.05 ERA)

Wood hasn’t allowed a run in 18 2/3 innings and has yielded only one run in his last three starts combined. After serving up six homers in a three-start span earlier this season, he has allowed only one dinger in his last six outings. Wood owns a 1.09 WHIP this year.

                  Slumping

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (2-8, 5.35 ERA)

The Phillies have lost four of Kendrick’s last five starts and he owns a 7.67 ERA over that span. He allowed five runs in the first six batters he faced in his last outing, a 5-4 loss to Pittsburgh. Kendrick has served up 10 homers this season, five in the last four starts, and owns a 8.63 ERA in the first two innings of games this year.

Erik Bedard, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-9, 4.57 ERA)

Bedard was smacked for five runs and two homers in 4 2/3 innings of work in his last trip to the hill and Pittsburgh has lost each of his last four outings. However, he is much better at home than he is on the road. He has given up 32 runs in 43 2/3 innings of work on the road, but owns a 2.31 ERA at PNC Park this season.

NASCAR betting: Coke Zero 400 preview and odds

It’s the mid-summer wildcard race that marks the halfway point of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Saturday night’s Coke Zero 400 at Daytona International Speedway is the 18th of 36 scheduled points races in 2012.

Being a restrictor plate race - one of only two tracks on the circuit that use them - Daytona is known as an unpredictable event that can lead to some wild racing and uncertain finishes.

It’s Florida. It’s summer. It’s hot and no one is hotter in the series right now than Brad Keselowski. This week’s favorite is coming off his third win of the season at Kentucky last week, but most importantly one of his three wins came at the last restrictor plate race at Talladega in May. Keselowski was one of the big-name drivers who were caught up in a crash here in February when the season-opening Daytona 500 ran under the lights on a Monday night.

Keselowski returns 10th in the standings and wants to not only make up for that disappointment in the season opener but pick up another win to help cement him in the Chase, which starts in just eight races from this Saturday night.

“The three wins are nice, and it means that we are pretty safe in regards to making the Chase, but we are focused on staying in the Top 10 so that we can use the bonus point,” Keselowski told reporters. “I want to be the guy with the most wins and inside the Top 10 and I want to look forward to making sure that we stay inside the Top 10. Hopefully we can climb up a few more spots to be safe. But wins and being in the Top 10, that’s all that matters.”

Kasey Kahne looks to have overcome some early season struggles. Like Keselowski he was swept up in a crash here in February but was fourth at Talladega and finished a strong second last week at Kentucky. Unlike Keselowski, Kahne is outside the top 12 in the points in 14th and needs another win to help climb upwards in the standings.

“The restrictor-plate races are always unpredictable,” Kahne said. “We had a lot of speed in the (Daytona) 500, but got caught in a wreck at the end. We fell back at Talladega and still got a top-five. You have to make the right decisions and a lot of it is luck, but I know the Hendrick Motorsports guys will give me a fast car and a good chance to get to the front.”

Matt Kenseth won the season opening Daytona 500. He’s since announced that he will be leaving Roush-Fenway Racing after this season, making this the last time he will race at Daytona with the only team he’s ever raced with the in Sprint Cup Series since 1999. The races at Daytona have not been swept in a season for thirty years primarily due to the changing conditions between February and July. But while odds may seem against him, this year’s Daytona 500 was rescheduled for the first time ever and was run completely under the lights, something that will happen Saturday night. He was also a very strong third at Talladega in May.

“I looked forward to going to Talladega more so than any plate race I have ever looked forward to in my career with as well as we ran at Daytona and how fast our cars were in February,” Kenseth said. “I feel the same way about Daytona this weekend and I am looking forward to getting down there. At Talladega, I felt we had the fastest car in the race and dominated the race as much as you can, but I felt like I messed that up at the end when Greg (Biffle) and I somehow got separated. I have been agonizing over that since Talladega, but I am looking forward to getting some redemption this weekend and returning to Daytona coming off that win in the 500. Our Roush Fords have been fast and we have been able to pass, so I am going back this weekend hoping it will be the same as our earlier superspeedway results this year.”

Party Crasher: Don’t count out Tony Stewart. Stewart is coming off a forgettable race at Kentucky last week where he finished 32nd due to ignition issues. However, Stewart is the most successful recent winner of the Coke Zero 400. Stewart won the race in 2005, 2006 and 2009 and will no doubt be looking for a rebound Saturday night.
