Monday betting tips: Tiger's British Open odds on the move

    Weather to watch

Rockies at Cardinals: Start of July means the mercury is rising on those thermometers. Game-time temperature at Busch Stadium is supposed to be 94 F.

Red Sox at Athletics: The wind is blowing out again at Oakland Coliseum. The weatherman says there should be a 13 mph wind blowing directly out to center field.

    Who’s hot

Spain’s international soccer team: After winning the Euro 2012 final in convincing fashion, La Roja have now won three consecutive competitive tournaments (Euro 2008, World Cup 2010, Euro 2012). To think this team used to be considered an international underachiever before winning in 2008.

Texas Rangers: They’ve won five in a row and 13 of their last 15 games. Only three of those 15 games were on the road.

    Who’s not

Phoenix Mercury: Lost and failed to cover against Washington on Sunday dropping the 2009 champs record to 4-10 SU and 5-9 ATS this season.

Philadelphia Philles: They losing streak got pushed to five games after falling to the Marlins on Sunday. They’re now just 8-20 since June 2. Yuck.

    Key stat

    24 for 24

Yaroslava Shvedova had a perfect set (24 points played, 24 points won in a 6-0 set), the first time in 44 years of women’s tennis. Even crazy, it happened in a third round Wimbledon match against French Open runner-up Sara Errani. Shvedova plays Serena Williams on Monday and is a +368 underdog.

    Notable quotable

“Daryl Morey proves that when people think you're smart before you've accomplished anything, you empower yourself to do dumb things.” – Dan Wolken writer for TheDaily.com and FoxSports on Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey signing Chicago Bulls restricted free agent Omer Asik to a 3-year, $25.1 million offer sheet. Asik averaged 3.3 points and 4.7 rebounds and 21.3 minutes per game last season.

    Notes and tips

Tiger Woods won the AT&T National, making it three wins in his last seven starts. No majors, but Tiger is playing much better. Oddsmakers took notice too. After winning at Congressional, Woods' odds to win the British Open dropped from 10/1 to 5/1 at the Las Vegas Hotel SuperBook. Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood are the next closest at 12/1, Luke Donald's next at 15/1 and Phil Mickelson is tied with at large group for fifth fave at 30/1.

      Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

PGA Tour leaders in birdies made, this year, with $$ won.......

      256-- Seung-Yul Noh-- won $1,087,229 (51st on money list)

      250-- Brendon De Jonge-- 1,053,675 (54th)

      247-- Cameron Tringale-- 1,132,218 (48th)

      245-- Blake Adams-- 642,545 (96th)

      244-- Ken Duke-- 1,170,420 (46th)

      239-- Harris English-- 845,236 (70th)

      ***********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports weekend.........

      13) I'm not normally much for bitching about who made or didn't make the All-Star teams, but Johnny Cueto is 9-4, 2.26, pitching his home games in a bandbox. How in God's name is he not on the NL squad?

Putting Aroldis Chapman on the team instead of Cueto makes no sense; the only thing I can think of is they held some positions just for closers.

      12) Umpire Paul Emmel has worked the plate 16 times this season; in those 16 games, 15 of them went over the betting total. Only game he worked that stayed under was when Red Sox won 5-1 at Philly (Beckett-Lee).

      11) Dodgers are first team since the '92 Cubs, and only fourth team since 1920 to get shut out five times in a six-game span (Mon-Sat).

      10) Odd Fact of the Day: When Grandal/Amarista both homered twice for the Padres Saturday, it was just the second time in MLB history a team had both the catcher and shortstop homer twice in the same game.

Only other time was May 13, 1998, when Widger/Grudzielanek both did it for Montreal against Giant pitcher Mark Gardner, a former Expo.

      9) Over their six games, Baltimore starting pitchers have allowed 33 earned runs in 26 innings, an ERA of 11.42. Can Jim Thome pitch?

That said, O's have more than one All-Star for first time since 2005.

      8) Mike Trout hit .372 in June (42-113). Could he be the MVP? Already know he's Rookie of the Year.

      7) Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez is 7-11 in his career with the bases loaded, with two grand slams. An impressive young player.

      6) How is Matt Kemp in the Home Run Derby, if he is hurt? He might be up there hitting for a half hour. Thats good for his leg?

      5) If you think the Dodgers are putrid on offense, the Seattle Mariners have now scored nine runs in their last eight games, yet still won three of them.

      4) Toronto Raptors offered Steve Nash $36M for three years. How does he turn them down? He's the GM of the Canadian National team.

      3) When the NFL starts, Denver Broncos will be a highly-scrutinized team, and if they lose their opener at home to Pittsburgh, panic mongers will be declaring Peyton Manning's signing a failure, because thats what nitwits in today's media do. So this stat bears some thought........

Denver coach John Fox has a 79-74 career record, but in his last nine home openers, with both Carolina/Denver, he is a stunningly bad 1-8.

      2) Oakland Raiders have their fourth head coach in five years; Dennis Allen is this year's coach. Its really hard to be good that way.

      1) Thinking about the Saints, unless they sign Drew Brees very soon, they could be in for a historically bad season; they're already without the coach, the GM won't be there during the season. If they don't sign Brees soon, it could start to look like they're tanking the whole year, in a season when the Super Bowl is in the Superdome. Just sign the guy already.

              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Monday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
              ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

              STREAKING

Kyle Lohse, St. Louis Cardinals (7-2, 2.82 ERA)

Take a look at the Cards’ new No. 1 starter. Adam Wainwright is struggling in his first year back from Tommy John surgery and Chris Carpenter is still looking for the fountain of youth.

Lohse, meanwhile, is just doing work. He’s produced quality starts in each of his last five appearances and the under is 4-1 over that same streak.

Zack Greinke, Milwaukee Brewers (9-2, 2.82 ERA)

This right-hander’s name is floating in the trade rumor mill but bettors would lose a money trend if Greinke leaves Wisconsin. The Brewers are 20-1 in Greinke’s 21 career starts at Miller Park, including 5-1 this season.

Greinke is 4-0 with a 1.08 ERA in six home starts this campaign and has allowed just eight earned runs in his last 43 innings pitched.

              SLUMPING

Doug Fister, Detroit Tigers (1-5, 3.91 ERA)

The hope in Detroit was that Fister could be every bit as good for the Tigers in 2012 as he was in 2011 after coming over from the Seattle Mariners. But turns out a groundball pitcher doesn't have a lot of success with roly-poly corner infielders.

Fister gave up eight earned runs in his last start and Detroit is 1-7 in his last eight appearances.

Carlos Zambrano, Miami Marlins (4-6, 3.71 ERA)

A month and a half into the season and Miami scribes were wondering if Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen had resurrected Zambrano’s career. Well, six weeks better we all know better. Big Z still stinks.

The Marlins are 0-4 in Zambrano’s last four outings and Carlos has walked 15 batters in his last 13 2/3 innings pitched.

                Monday, July 2

                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
July's best and worst starting pitchers
                ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firecrackers and the MLB All-Star Game signal the month of July. It also means the start of the second half of the MLB campaign. The key to each team’s fortune lies on the pitching staff. Can they sustain or will they fold like a deck of cards?

Listed below are hurlers that have enjoyed a 2-to-1 or better success ratio in team starts the last three seasons during the month of July. On the flip side, we’ve also listed pitchers that struggle in July team starts, winning 33 percent or less of their efforts. To qualify pitchers must have made a minimum of 10 starts, with at least one start each July over the last three years.

                GOOD MONTH PITCHERS:

                Josh Beckett • 10-2

Beckett returns after going on the disabled listed on June 11th with shoulder inflammation. The Red Sox right-hander’s season has mirrored that of his team. Sometimes brilliant, sometimes dreadful and sometimes injured.

If Boston is going to secure a wild card spot and fight for the AL East lead, they will need the Beckett of old starting this month, with a sharp breaking pitches complimented by spotting the fastball on the corners.

                Mark Buehrle • 12-4

The Miami left-hander has gotten a lot heat for his record, but the numbers tell a different story. Buehrle leads Marlins starting pitchers in almost every positive category and his peripheral numbers compare almost exactly with how he pitched in Chicago.

What has hurt Buehrle more than anything is a lack of run support. The way he holds down lefty hitters (.215 batting average), if the Miami bats start to score runs, July should be terrific like usual for the Missouri native.

                A.J. Burnett • 10-5

Some people are just not made for the Big Apple and quite possibly, Burnett is one of those types. After three undistinguished seasons with the Yankees, A.J. is having a career year with Pittsburgh. Maybe it’s the cool necklace the 35-year old veteran is wearing, but his batting average allowed and WHIP numbers are his best since he was a Blue Jay in 2007. More than anything, Burnett has regained his confidence and he loves PNC Park, where he has a smokin’ 1.11 ERA.

                Matt Cain • 11-5

The San Francisco pitcher signed a large contract earlier this year and is making the front office look like it made a wise decision. Cain is on pace to shatter his career win total of 14 in 2009 and as July starts, opposing batters are below the Mendoza Line at .195 (batting average) against. Though his velocity is the same, he’s averaging a strikeout an inning, which is his highest mark as a major-leaguer.

                Cole Hamels • 12-5

As bad as Philadelphia has been this season, just think where they would be without Cole Hamels. The port-sider has been remarkably consistent for a Phillies offense that has yo-yo tendencies. Hamels is already two-thirds of the way to his career-high in wins of 15 and having survived June (ordinarily his worst month), he and the Phillies should make a move the next 31 days.

                Josh Johnson • 11-3

It has been coming together for the 6-foot-7 Johnson, whose made five consecutive quality starts and is 4-2 with a nifty 2.56 ERA and a 51/17 KW ratio since May 4. After finding a lot of bats to start the year, the hard-throwing Johnson has been able to spot his fastball low in the zone with movement and his normally hard slider has the late-breaking action once again.

                Jair Jurrjens • 12-4

After a horrible start to the season, Jurrjens returned from a trip to Triple-A, pitching like the same Braves pitcher from the prior four seasons. Jurrjens' velocity has been down since he suffered a right knee injury in 2010 and his stint in the minor leagues has been about relearning how to pitch, regaining confidence and better utilizing his secondary pitches to throw strikes and induce ground balls. Let’s see how he fares this month.

                Clayton Kershaw • 11-5

The 24-year Dallas native has not received much run support and made costly errors at the wrong times. Where this shows up for Kershaw is being taken yard, as he’s permitted 11 homers in 2012, compared to 15 all last season.

                Tim Lincecum • 11-5

One of the biggest mysteries of the season has been the Giants two-time Cy Young winner. He went 10 starts without a victory (0-6), putting together a ridiculous 6.23 ERA. There have been more theories as to what Lincecum’s problems have been than an Arthur Conan Doyle book. The fact is he’s made mistakes in the zone that have been hit in the air more than in the past, which suggests less sink on his pitches.

                CC Sabathia • 12-5

The Yankees ace has a groin strain and is on the DL. He is presumed to return after the All-Star break and build on another typical Sabathia season.

                Jered Weaver • 12-6

The only heavenly aspect of the Angels sickly start of the season was their No.1 pitcher, Jered Weaver. Though right-handed hitters are only batting .236 against Weaver, left-hand batters are a feeble .169 against his tosses. At the Big A in Anaheim, his ERA is an insane 0.70 this season.

                BAD MONTH PITCHERS:

                Livan Hernandez • 5-11

Hernandez made 18 relief appearances for Atlanta this season and was picked up by Milwaukee last month, being another pitching staff leaking oil because of injuries. If the Brewers are so desperate they have to start the Cuban native at this point of his 16-year career, an expected result will likely follow.

                Jason Vargas • 3-12

The Seattle lefty slinger is a fly ball pitcher, which makes him prone to extra-base hits and balls flying over fences. This has been especially true this season, as Vargas has been taken deep 21 times, compared to 22 all of last year.

                        Pitt,

Our usual source for umps info doesn't put any out on the first day of a new series because noone can say which umps will be at which position until close to gametime. We know who the crews will be but not positions.

There's a link to umpire information in post #1 but you have to know today's names. I'm sorry to say I don't.

Armadillo will resume ump trends tomorrow.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, Pitt. Good luck tonight!
