Saturday’s betting tips: Strong winds on tap for MLB matinees

    Weather to watch

Pittsburgh Pirates at St. Louis Cardinals – 12 mph winds expected to blow out to left-centerfield

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants – 13 mph winds expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

MLB: Nationals are 9-4 in their last 13 road games.

MLB: Home team is 39-13 in umpire Lance Barksdale’s last 52 games behind home plate. He’s set to work Saturday's Red Sox-Mariners matchup.

CFL: Argonauts are 11-3 ATS in their last 14 meetings in Edmonton.

WNBA: Seattle Storm are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.

    Who’s not

MLB: Rockies are 5-16 in their last 21 overall.

MLB: Marlins are 4-17 in their last 21 overall.

CFL: Eskimos are 1-5 ATS in their last six games in Week 1.

WNBA: Liberty are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall.

    Key stat

26 – Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista went into Friday’s action with 14 home runs in the month of June pushing him to an MLB-leading 26 homers this season. The 14 homers set a club record for the most hit in one month.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Plenette Pierson, New York Liberty – Pierson is expected to be out of the lineup for two to six weeks with a calf injury. The 6-foot-2 forward is averaging 11.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game for the Liberty, who average just 70.9 points per game (10th in the WNBA).

    Game of the day

Chicago White Sox at New York Yankees (-140, 9.5)

    Notable quotable

"These have got to be the fastest greens I've ever putted on. I don't know, maybe the same speed as Olympic a couple weeks ago, but these have a lot more pitch to them, so if you get on the wrong side of the hole, you've got no chance.” – 17 year-old Beau Hossler on the greens at the AT&T National.

    Notes and tips

Houston Astros manager Brad Mills adjusted his outlook on the return of second baseman Jose Altuve from a right hamstring injury. "He hasn't had a setback, but I probably was too optimistic hoping for Saturday," Mills said Thursday before the Astros' 7-3 loss to the San Diego Padres. "And like I said, it's not a setback. Nothing is wrong with him. It's just they feel that they want to make sure that he's absolutely right, so (his return) at the very earliest would probably be Sunday."He entered Thursday third among National League second baseman in All-Star voting despite ranking first in batting (.309) and hits (88) at the position.

Toronto Argos quarterback Ricky Ray will open his season against his former team the Edmonton Eskimos. Ray was traded to Toronto last December in exchange for quarterback Steven Jyles, kicker Grant Shaw, and the second pick in April's draft. Ray struggled in preseason play with his new team, completing eight of 15 attempts for 99 yards and two picks. Most books have this matchup listed as a Pick ‘em.

Seattle head coach Pete Carroll has said that Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn and Russell Wilson will wage a legitimate competition for the No. 1 spot, but it was reported in recent days that the incumbent would go to camp next month atop the depth chart. The reaction that Jackson will get the No. 1 snaps, at least at the outset of camp, has generated mixed reactions both inside and outside of the Seattle organization. Jackson was 7-7 as a starter in 2011, is .500 in his 34 career starts, has a sub-60 percent completion rate, a passer rating of only 77.7 and only a few more touchdown passes than interceptions (38-35).

      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Aaron Hill hit for the cycle Friday, just second player in last century to do it twice in same season. Cycles are more rare than no-hitters.

-- Clippers took a huge chance and traded for Lamar Odom, who wasn't too interested in playing for Dallas LY. Hopefully he'll try now.

-- Dodgers are 0-5 this week, scoring a total of two runs. Ouch.

-- Cliff Lee is now winless in 13 starts. Hard to believe.

-- Aaron Cook threw an 81-pitch CG at Seattle, getting no misses on M's 24 swings, but they only had two hits. Mariners have scored five runs in five games this week, all at home.

-- NBA and NHL free agency start Sunday, so things will get interesting on those fronts.

      *************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Making the HOF case for Davey Johnson....

      13) In my humble opinion, Davey Johnson’s managerial career is Hall of Fame-worthy; this is 16th season as a skipper, for his 5th different team. His record with each of the five teams is over .500 (harder than you would think to pull off) and he’s won five division titles (and is in first place this season), as well as the 1986 World Series title.

He’s won with the Orioles and Reds, who have had very little success since he left. The Nationals haven’t been good since almost 20 years ago, when they called Montreal home. Johnson is smart and arrogant and a very good manager who deserves to be in Cooperstown someday.

      12) As a player, Johnson played 13 years at 2B, winning two World Series rings with Baltimore, and losing two other series (‘69/’71); he hit 136 career homers, but 43 of them came in ’73, when he, Henry Aaron and Darrell Evans were teammates who all his 40+ dingers.

Johnson was still with Atlanta the next year, when Hammerin’ Hank hit his 715th home run. If anyone should write a book that would be interesting at the end of a stellar career, it would be Johnson.

      11) Speaking of the Nationals, they’re 13-3 on the road when either Strasburg/Gonzalez start on the mound.

      10) Chicago Cubs have been outscored 38-8 in Jeff Samardzija’s last four starts……..Rangers are 8-0 at home when Yu Darvish starts.

      9) Its too bad Tim McClelland’s umpiring crew wasn’t in Atlanta this week; then Marvin Hudson could’ve worked the plate for the pitching matchup between Tim Hudson and Daniel Hudson (none of the three are related). Marvin Hudson worked the plate in Philly that night.

      8) 4:25 kickoffs for NFL games (rather than 4:15) will help gamblers wait longer to see how their 1:00 plays made out before plunging in on their doubleheader game. That’s not why the change was made, but its still will make a difference to a certain segment of the population.

      7) Finally saw HBO’s documentary on UNLV basketball and Jerry Tarkanian; have to say it was an excellent hour of TV. If you like college basketball, its worth finding. Two things stand out to me about the show:

      6) A kid named Graziano from Long Island was a hot recruit in 1977. Phone rings in his house, his mom answers. Voice on the other end says, “Hi, I’m Frank Sinatra calling for your son on behalf of UNLV.”

Mother replies, “I’m Ella Fitzgerald” and hangs up.

Sinatra calls back three minutes later and explains, and talks the kid up for a while. Long story short, Graziano went to South Carolina and was drafted by the Denver Nuggets. Sinatra stuck to his day job, singing.

      5) At the end of the show, they say that the NCAA settled with Tarkanian for $2.5M, for denying him due process during their witch hunts to try and run Tark out of coaching. Then they show the check on camera. A check for freakin’ $2.5M. Showing the actual check was an impressive move.

      4) If I ran ESPN, I’d hire a former NBA personnel guy to be my “Mel Kiper” during the NBA Draft. I’m just not a big Jay Bilas fan.

      3) How is it that neither Jordan Taylor or Scott Machado got drafted? It says here they’ll both find their way onto an NBA roster when November rolls around.

      2) Speaking of players who didn’t get drafted, I’ll bet anyone a pizza that West Virginia’s Kevin Jones turns out to be a better pro than that Greek kid the Knicks drafted. This could be Ron Artest/Frederic Weis all over again, other than Kevin Jones isn’t insane like Artest, and the Greek kid apparently has at least some game, unlike Weis, who had none.

      1) Five of top 10 kids drafted Thursday night were 1-and-done in college. Not sure who that rule helps, making kids go to college, but for only a year. Doesn’t help the colleges, doesn’t help the NBA teams much.

Guess it helps the kids to an extent, but unsure how much. I’d be in favor of letting them go right from high school to the pros, but I’d actually prefer a system where kids got drafted, but if they weren’t good enough, teams could retain their rights while they played in college.

But that’s just me. I could be wrong.

Public opinion: Bettors like Buehrle vs. Hamels

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Friday.

        MLB:

Philadelphia Phillies at Miami Marlins (+115, 7.5)

The Marlins went into Friday’s action having won just two of their last 10. They send veteran lefty Mark Buehrle to the hill and he’s coming off a seven-inning shutout victory over Toronto. He squares off against Philadelphia’s Cole Hamels.

        Consensus: Marlins, 69 percent

        CFL:

Toronto Argos at Edmonton Eskimos (Pick ‘em, 48.5)

Early bettors are pretty much split down the middle on both the side and the total for this one. The big plotline here is Toronto quarterback Ricky Ray opening the year against his former team. The Argos have been dominant on the road against the Eskimos, at 11-3-1 against the spread in their last 15 trips to Edmonton.

        Consensus: Eskimos, 51 percent

        WNBA:

Seattle Storm at New York Liberty (-1.5, 140)

The New York Liberty are giving up almost 82 points per game this year and have dropped four of their last five both straight up and against the spread. Seattle’s going in the other direction, having covered the number in each of its last five. However, bettors are siding with the home team early on.

        Consensus: Liberty, 61 percent

NASCAR betting: Quaker State 400 preview and odds

After the road course at Sonoma, it’s back to the ovals this week for the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Saturday night’s Quaker State 400 marks only the second time the series has raced at the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway and it marks the kickoff of an important segment of the season.

Saturday night is the start of the Race to the Chase - 10 weeks leading up to the September 8 race at Richmond International Raceway where the 12 driver field for this year’s Chase for the Sprint Cup will be set.

With only one race at Kentucky, you might think that there isn’t enough history to pick a favorite. You’d be wrong.

At 1.5 miles, Kentucky Speedway is representative of a majority of the tracks the series races on - the so-called intermediate tracks. Those who typically run well on the 1.5-mile tracks should do well here. Combine that with the desperation of a few hovering around the 12th-place spot and the favorites picture becomes clearer.
Carl Edwards is currently in 10th but he’s been struggling this season and has yet to win. The four drivers behind him have won once this season, putting Edwards into desperation mode and hunting for a win. Edwards has run well on the 1.5-mile tracks and has two wins here, his first career NASCAR win in the Truck Series in 2003 and one in the Nationwide series in 2005. He was fifth here last year and aims to go all the way Saturday night.

“It is a big race for us,” Edwards said. “I had my first win in NASCAR there in the truck series in 2003. It is huge for me to be able to go back there and have the opportunity to run in the Cup Series and get a win there. We had one Nationwide win there as well and I really like that place. It has character and the fans are wound up so it’s a lot of fun.”

Odds to win Quaker State 400 (Provided by *** Global)

          Jimmie Johnson 5-1

Makin' Canadian bacon: Week 1 CFL preview and picks
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CFL regular season kicks off this weekend. For some of you, that means football is back. For others, that means we're still a long way from football season.

Whatever it means to you, we'll preview the games each week and give you our picks.

Toronto Argonauts vs. Edmonton Eskimos (-2, 48.5)

The running game was about the only bright spot for the Argos last season with Cory Boyd running for more than six yards per carry. After that, the only thing saving Toronto from the worst record in the CFL was playing in the East Division.
New quarterback Ricky Ray should help on offense. He was a star and former Grey Cup MVP for Edmonton, which could make things a tad awkward in Week 1. Steven Jyles is charged with the new No. 1 role for the Eskies and it remains to be seen how consistent he’ll be on a team that made a ton of changes this offseason.

            Pick: Toronto +2

Montreal Alouettes vs. Calgary Stampeders (-2.5, 55.5)

The Als went 10-8 last season but they were the worst team to bet on in the league (along with Sasky) with a 6-12 ATS record. They also closed the season with eight straight losses against the number and four losses straight up.
Ninety-seven-year-old quarterback Anthony Calvillo led the league in passing yards in 2011 with over 5 million (it’s the CFL, remember) and he anchors the Montreal offense. But with a record of 10-8 after several seasons of dominance there are some question marks in Montreal for the first time in a long time.
Calgary won both meetings with Montreal last season and covered the spread both times. They should give Montreal a strong fight on home soil on Canada Day.

            Pick: Montreal +2.5

                      Saturday, June 30

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Streaking

Wade Miley, Arizona Diamondbacks (9-3, 2.19 ERA)

Miley has allowed just a single run in each of his last four starts and actually lost one of those – a 1-0 decision to the Rangers which saw him give up just three hits over 7 2/3 innings. The rookie has struck out 28 while walking just two batters over that 30 2/3 inning stretch. He currently sits ninth in MLB starter money standings, having earned 6.72 units for his supporters.

Tom Milone, Oakland Athletics (8-5, 3.83 ERA)

After serving up three homers and allowing eight earned runs in just four innings of work against the Colorado Rockies earlier this month, Milone bounced back with two great starts. He has allowed just one run over the last 16 innings, while striking out seven and walking one. He held the M’s scoreless in a 1-0 win in his last turn.

                      Slumping

Nathan Eovaldi, Los Angeles Dodgers (0-4, 4.04 ERA)

The Dodgers have lost each of Eovaldi’s last six starts and things seem to be getting worse, rather than better. He was hammered for eight earned runs on 10 hits in his last trip to the mound, which ended up as a 8-0 loss to San Francisco. The Dodgers average only 0.8 runs per game in his six starts to date.

Mike Minor, Atlanta Braves (3-6, 6.14 ERA)

The Braves have dropped six of Minor’s last seven starts and he’s coming off yet another tough outing against the Boston Red Sox. The BoSox swatted three dingers off him in 4 2/3 innings and he was charged with four earned runs while also walking three.
