Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Streaking

Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers (10-3, 3.24 ERA)

The Rangers’ big lefty has been close to perfect lately, holding his opposition scoreless in four of his last five starts. He has allowed just one run in that stretch spanning 27 1/3 innings. Harrison was forced to leave his last outing after five innings after experiencing back tightness, but is expected to be ready to go Friday against Oakland.

Justin Verlander, Detroit Tigers (8-4, 2.52 ERA)

After a short slump, Verlander is back to his normal form. He has rebounded from three straight losses by helping the Tigers to wins in each of his last four turns in the rotation. Verlander hasn’t allowed more than two runs in any of those outings and is coming off a complete-game 3-2 victory over Pittsburgh that saw him strike out seven and walk one.

    Slumping

Cliff Lee, Philadelphia Phillies (0-4, 3.72 ERA)

The Phillies have lost four consecutive games with Lee on the hill as the veteran continues to search for his first win of the season. His ERA is up to 5.10 over his last seven outings and he has uncharacteristically given up four leads during that span. Lee has allowed 14 runs over his last three.

Paul Maholm, Chicago Cubs (4-6, 5.38 ERA)

The Cubs have won just one of Maholm’s last eight starts and the last time he actually landed in the win column was way back on May 9. The lefty worked just 3 1/3 innings in his last outing, getting smacked around for six earned runs on nine hits while walking three. The Cubs average just 3.4 runs in his starts this season.

Giants extend incredible shutout streak; Friday's total at 6.5
        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The San Francisco Giants are dishing out more donuts than Krispy Kreme, posting a franchise-record fourth straight shutout in a 5-0 win against the Cincinnati Reds Thursday.

The Giants haven’t allowed a run since a three-run, ninth-inning collapse against the Oakland A’s on June 24, giving up just 17 hits over the past four outings – including a three-game series sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers in which they outscored their rivals 13-0.

San Francisco goes for shutout No. 5 versus the Reds Friday. Oddsmakers have dipped the total to 6.5 runs with Giants perfect-gamer Matt Cain taking the mound against Cincinnati righty Mike Leake.

San Francisco is 3-1 over/under during this shutout streak, playing over the 7.5-run total all by itself with an 8-0 victory against L.A. on Monday.

This incredible defensive showing has helped the Giants claim sole ownership of the National League West lead, jumping one game ahead of the Dodgers. San Francisco is 6-1 in its last seven games while Los Angeles has lost five in a row and has just one win in its last 10 games.

On top of that, the Dodgers – who are already without star slugger Matt Kemp – may be forced to put outfielder Andre Ethier on the 15-day DL due to an oblique strain. He’s currently listed as day-to-day.

San Francisco is currently listed at +150 to win the NL Central crown, behind the Dodgers at -105. The Giants are priced as +900 to win the NL Pennant and +1,400 to win the World Series.

Cain and the Giants are -149 home favorites versus the Reds (+140) Friday.
