Friday’s betting tips: Pirates struggle in St. Louis

    Who’s hot

MLB: Over is 13-3-1 in Astros last 17 road games.

MLB: Nationals are 9-3 in their last 12 road games.

CFL: Saskatchewan Roughriders are 19-7-1 ATS in their last 27 meetings.

WNBA: Under is 23-9 in the Phoenix Mercury's last 32 road games.

    Who’s not

MLB: Pirates are 5-14 in the last 19 meetings in St. Louis and are just 1-5 in their last six matchups against Friday’s starter, Adam Wainwright.

MLB: Braves are 3-9 in Randall Delgado's last 12 starts.

CFL: The over is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings between Winnipeg and British Columbia.

WNBA: The Atlanta Dream are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games overall.

    Key stat

5 – Outside of Crystal Langhorne, who scored 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting in the Washington Mystics’ latest loss, the rest of the club’s starters hit just five field goals in a 79-71 loss to Seattle. The Mystics average a league-low 68.8 points per game.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers – Braun sat out Wednesday’s game after being hit on the left elbow by a pitch Tuesday night. It was the seventh time he has been hit by a pitch this season and is listed as questionable for Friday contest against Arizona.

    Game of the day

Cincinnati Reds at San Francisco Giants (-150, 6.5)

    Notable quotable

"We have the chance to be the best Lions team I've ever been a part of. The talent level is fine, the continuity is great, the characters on this team are good, the personalities are good, the blending is good, we don't have cancers. ... Everybody's here with the right purpose and intention, and that's very rare to find in professional sports." – British Columbia Lions veteran center Angus Reid ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, a rematch of last season’s Grey Cup which B.C. won. The Lions will have new head coach Mike Benevides on the sidelines for his debut.

    Notes and tips

Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier was to undergo an MRI on a left oblique injury he picked up Wednesday. The Dodgers are bracing themselves to be without the slugger for at least a couple of weeks. He’s hitting .291 with 10 homers and 55 RBI.

An ESPN report states that Tim Hightower will be the Washington Redskins’ starting running back if he’s healthy to begin the season. He owned the starting role early last season but was losing carries to Roy Helu before he tore his ACL in Week 7.

The Tampa Rays activated designated hitter Luke Scott from the disabled list and inserted him into the lineup as their cleanup hitter Thursday. Scott has been out since June 14 with a back injury that bothered the 34-year-old during parts of the past three seasons, including the two previous years in Baltimore. Scott is batting .220 this season but provides a home-run threat in the middle of the order.

The Dallas Mavericks have agreed to send Lamar Odom to the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team transaction that would send guard Mo Williams from the Clippers to the Utah Jazz and leave the Mavericks receiving a trade exception, the Dallas Morning News reported Thursday. By trading Odom, the Mavs do not have to buy out the final year of his contract, saving the team $2.4 million against the salary cap.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- John Calipari has now coached 15 first round picks the last six years.

-- SEC had eight first round picks this draft, their most ever.

-- Why did Sacramento trade the 36th pick in the draft for cash? They've only got 11 players under contract. They need cash that bad?

-- Madison Bumgarner tossed a 1-hitter, and Giants have now thrown four consecutive shutouts- they're in first place.........

--.......which means the Dodgers are out of first place for the first time since April 11. LA scored two runs in its last four games.

-- Mariners scored five runs in four games this week; they're 2-2.

      *************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

      13) When they finalize this college football/playoff stuff, hopefully strength of schedule will be a big component; this would energize September and make it a great football month, instead of one where Florida State opens with Murray State/Savannah State (they are this year).

SOS being important means there will have to be more big games in non-conference play, which is good for us.

      12) You think athletes are overpaid? Guy named Seth MacFarlane writes for a TV show called Family Guy. Makes $33M a year. 33 freakin’ million dollars a year. Wow.

      11) No idea if there’s a reason, but Cincinnati Reds are 20-9 in day games, 21-24 at night. Sometimes things just are the way they are, with no specific reason why.

      10) Since I watch six hours of baseball a day just about every day for six months a year, I feel qualified to tell you that three of the worst umpires are Bob Davidson, CB Bucknor and Mike Dimuro; they seem to be in the most arguments, because they miss a lot of calls.

      9) CC Sabathia’s stint on the DL means he’ll be missing his first starts since April 2006.

      8) Convicted pedophile Jerry Sandusky is still earning his $59,000 pension from the state of Pennsylvania while he sits in prison; that’s more than I make in a year for going to work every day. Terrific.

      7) Since 2005, under is 105-79 (57.1%) when Bill Miller umpires behind the plate. Lot of marginal pitches called strikes.

      6) If Robert Kraft wants an NFL team in London so bad, let him move his Patriots there; just another self-serving rich dude trying to help his other businesses by using his status as an NFL owner.

      5) 14 of the 60 kids taken in LY’s NBA Draft played in the D-League last winter for at least part of the season.

      4) 43 is the lowest uniform number that has never been worn by anyone who is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

      3) NFL switched the times of its late afternoon doubleheader games from 4:15 to 4:25, which means ten less minutes to screw around before the Sunday night game starts, and less overlap with the 1:00 games.

      2) Major league pitchers who got 20 swings/misses in their last start are averaging only 10.8 swings/misses in their next start.

      1) Dodgers were just outscored 18-2 in their last four games; Matt Kemp/ Andre Ethier are both hurt. LA’s leadoff hitter has an OB% under .300. They’re so starved for offense they’re playing defensively-challenged Juan Rivera at 1B. Puts a lot of pressure on starting pitchers if they think the only way they can win is to pitch a shutout.

Public opinion: Jays' new starter seeing support

        MLB:

Los Angeles Angels at Toronto Blue Jays (+100, 9.5)

Carlos Villanueva gets another crack at a rotation spot for the Blue Jays Friday. He started 13 games for Toronto last year before going down with a forearm strain and was 6-4 with a 4.04 ERA. So far this season he has appeared in 22 games out of the bullpen, going 2-0 with a 3.24 ERA. Looks like early bettors like his chances to make an impression.

        Consensus: Blue Jays, 64 percent

        CFL:

Winnipeg Blue Bombers at B.C. Lions (-7.5, 51)

The B.C. Lions showcase a new head coach as Mike Benevides patrols the sideline when the Lions host the Blue Bombers in a rematch of last year’s Grey Cup. B.C. won and covered as 7.5-point favorites last year and bettors like them to get off on the right foot against the Swaggerville gang again this time.

        Consensus: Lions, 58 percent

        WNBA:

Phoenix Mercury at Chicago Sky (-10.5, 155)

Phoenix’s defense is getting burned by pretty much every team it faces. The Mercury allow 87.5 points per game and have played over in three straight. The over is also 9-1-2 in Chicago’s last 12 home games.

        Consensus: Over, 63 percent

NASCAR betting: Quaker State 400 preview and odds

After the road course at Sonoma, it’s back to the ovals this week for the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. Saturday night’s Quaker State 400 marks only the second time the series has raced at the 1.5-mile Kentucky Speedway and it marks the kickoff of an important segment of the season.

Saturday night is the start of the Race to the Chase - 10 weeks leading up to the September 8 race at Richmond International Raceway where the 12 driver field for this year’s Chase for the Sprint Cup will be set.

With only one race at Kentucky, you might think that there isn’t enough history to pick a favorite. You’d be wrong.

At 1.5 miles, Kentucky Speedway is representative of a majority of the tracks the series races on - the so-called intermediate tracks. Those who typically run well on the 1.5-mile tracks should do well here. Combine that with the desperation of a few hovering around the 12th-place spot and the favorites picture becomes clearer.
Carl Edwards is currently in 10th but he’s been struggling this season and has yet to win. The four drivers behind him have won once this season, putting Edwards into desperation mode and hunting for a win. Edwards has run well on the 1.5-mile tracks and has two wins here, his first career NASCAR win in the Truck Series in 2003 and one in the Nationwide series in 2005. He was fifth here last year and aims to go all the way Saturday night.

“It is a big race for us,” Edwards said. “I had my first win in NASCAR there in the truck series in 2003. It is huge for me to be able to go back there and have the opportunity to run in the Cup Series and get a win there. We had one Nationwide win there as well and I really like that place. It has character and the fans are wound up so it’s a lot of fun.”

Odds to win Quaker State 400 (Provided by *** Global)

          Jimmie Johnson 5-1
          Kyle Busch 7-1

Makin' Canadian bacon: Week 1 CFL preview and picks
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The CFL regular season kicks off this weekend. For some of you, that means football is back. For others, that means we're still a long way from football season.

Whatever it means to you, we'll preview the games each week and give you our picks.

                      Saskatchewan Roughriders vs. Hamilton Tigers-Cats (-5.5, 50)

Hammertown gets to air out its new offense on home ground to start the season. The Ti-Cats have a new coach, a new QB and some new faces on a deep receiving corps that has left them as the Grey Cup favorites to start the season at 7-2.
Former CFL MVP Henry Burris will take the snaps after being acquired by Calgary in the offseason and he aims to jump start a team that fell under the total in six of its last seven games last season.
Sasky, meanwhile, has reconfigured its lineup and coaching staff and may take a couple of games to get familiar. The Riders have a completely new o-line and are the biggest underdog to win the Grey Cup entering the season at 9-1.

                      Pick: Hamilton -5.5

                      Winnipeg Bluebombers vs. B.C. Lions (-7, 52)

Opening day features a replay of last year’s Grey Cup, won 34-22 by B.C. as a 7.5-point fave.
B.C. began last season by losing six of its first seven games (2-5 against the spread) but then proceeded to destroy the league from there with a 12-1 run including playoffs. The Lions went 11-2 ATS during that stretch – a cash grab for bettors matched by few teams in all of sports last season.
CFL Outstanding Player Travis Lulay is back along with a mostly intact offense. The Bombers had the best defense in the league last year though, albeit with the worst self-proclaimed nickname: Swaggerville.
Winnipeg also lost its starting tailback this week, Chris Garrett, to an Achilles injury. Ouch.
                      Pick: B.C. -7

Toronto Argonauts vs. Edmonton Eskimos (-2, 48.5)

The running game was about the only bright spot for the Argos last season with Cory Boyd running for more than six yards per carry. After that, the only thing saving Toronto from the worst record in the CFL was playing in the East Division.
New quarterback Ricky Ray should help on offense. He was a star and former Grey Cup MVP for Edmonton, which could make things a tad awkward in Week 1. Steven Jyles is charged with the new No. 1 role for the Eskies and it remains to be seen how consistent he’ll be on a team that made a ton of changes this offseason.

                      Pick: Toronto +2

Montreal Alouettes vs. Calgary Stampeders (-2.5, 55.5)

The Als went 10-8 last season but they were the worst team to bet on in the league (along with Sasky) with a 6-12 ATS record. They also closed the season with eight straight losses against the number and four losses straight up.
Ninety-seven-year-old quarterback Anthony Calvillo led the league in passing yards in 2011 with over 5 million (it’s the CFL, remember) and he anchors the Montreal offense. But with a record of 10-8 after several seasons of dominance there are some question marks in Montreal for the first time in a long time.
Calgary won both meetings with Montreal last season and covered the spread both times. They should give Montreal a strong fight on home soil on Canada Day.

                      Pick: Montreal +2.5

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
