Tuesday's betting tips: Dice-K owns Blue Jays

    Weather to watch

Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies - 17 mph winds expected to blow out to left field.

Tampa Bay Rays at Kansas City Royals - 15 mph winds expected to blow in from right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

MLB :Yankees are 22-7 in their last 29 overall.

MLB: Red Sox are 11-0 in Matsuzaka's last 11 starts vs. Blue Jays.

MLB: White Sox are 10-3 in their last 13 meetings with Minnesota.

WNBA: Storm are 4-0 ATS in their last four games overall.

    Who’s not

MLB: Pirates are 8-24 in the last 32 meetings in Philadelphia.

MLB: Over is 1-10 in Baltimore's last 11 overall.

MLB: Marlins are 5-16 in their last 21 overall.

WNBA:Sparks are 1-4-1 ATS in their last 6 games overall.

    Key stat

-6.83 – The Tulsa Shock own the WNBA’s worst rebounding margin this year at -6.83 and sit last in the league at 1-11 straight up.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Matt Capps, Minnesota Twins – Minnesota’s closer has been placed in the 15-day DL with a right shoulder injury. Glen Perkins and Jared Burton are expected to handle closing duties with Capps is on the shelf. He has 14 saves and a 3.42 ERA this season.

    Game of the day

Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants (+110)

    Notable quotable

“I feel like I'm a great player. I am a great player. Unfortunately I have to deal with circumstances that people don't have to deal with normally in a sport, but I can't be discouraged by that. I'm up for challenges. I have great tennis in me. I just need the opportunity.” – Venus Williams on her first-round exit at Wimbledon. It was the first time she failed to advance past the first round for the first time since her debut at the All England Club in 1997. Williams was pegged around +2500 to win the tournament.

    Notes and tips

Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve sat out Monday’s game after straining his hamstring in Sunday’s win over Cleveland. Altuve is hitting .309 with five homers, 23 RBI and has 12 stolen bases. He’s considered day-to-day for now.

Incumbent starter Tarvaris Jackson is No. 1 on the Seahawks' depth chart over high-dollar free agent signee Matt Flynn and third-round draft choice Russell Wilson. For now, coach Pete Carroll is standing by what he said in minicamp: Jackson will take snaps with the first unit while Flynn and Wilson prove they're ready to run offense. Jackson finished 7-7 as the starter in his first year in Seattle, but he also struggled in late-game situations, and understood there would be competition for the starting job in his second season.

The Marlins might have reached their lowest point of the season Saturday with a 7-1 loss. After the game, third baseman Hanley Ramirez, for the first time in his career, initiated a players-only meeting.Manager Ozzie Guillen said he did not talk to players after Saturday's game "because I might say the wrong thing and tomorrow I might regret it. But Guillen vented to reporters after Miami's 15th loss in its last 17 games."If we are the problem, my coaching staff, myself, then speak up. That's easy. ... But in the meanwhile, they're the ones who perform and we are not performing the way we should." The Marlins then went out Sunday and shut out the Blue Jays 9-0.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- How do the Track and Field people not have a procedure in place in case a dead heat occurs in the Olympic trials? And if an Olympic berth is decided by a coin flip, there are imbeciles in charge.

-- The Today Show rakes in a $200M profit every year? Damn. They’re paying Ann Curry $10M just to go away. Wish someone would pay me to go away.

-- Gas is down to $3.59 a gallon at corner of Fuller/Central in beautiful downtown Colonie. Its even cheaper if you go off the beaten path a little. Can’t remember last time the price of gas was this low.

-- Manny Acta’s Indians are 12-2 in one-run games, 25-32 in all other games. He’s getting the maximum out of his team.

-- St Louis is 10-18 in games decided by 1-2 runs, 28-17 in all other games. Mike Matheny is a rookie manager isn’t getting the most out of his Pujols-less team.

-- Braves had to be glad they weren’t scheduled Monday, since they’re 0-10 on Mondays this season.

      ************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) So far this season, 61 starting pitchers have pitched 9+ innings in a game; Cliff Lee is only one of the 61 who got an out after the 9th inning, blanking the Giants for 10 innings back in April. Not only didn’t Lee win that duel with Matt Cain, he’s still winless in 12 starts, here on June 26. Hard to believe.

      12) Odd Stat of the Day: those 61 pitchers who got 27+ outs in a game are 57-2, with the Lee-Cain matchup the two no-decisions. Both losses went to the same guy, Jake Peavy, who lost 1-0 and 2-1. What are the odds of that?

      11) Milwaukee Brewers are 6-8 in their last 14 games, but their starting pitchers are 3-1; 10 of their last 14 games were decided by the Brew Crew’s overworked bullpen.

      10) Its unfair to compare a bullpen from an NL team to one from the American League; the DH takes a ton of stress off an AL pen, since there are so many fewer pitching changes. If an NL starting staff struggles, that bullpen could burn out fairly quickly.

      9) San Diego Padres finished 8-7 in interleague play, just the third time in last 16 years the Friars had a winning record against the AL.

      8) Speaking of San Diego, why did they trade Ernesto Frieri to the Angels? The way Frieri has solidified the Anaheim bullpen, which was hideous before he got there, you could make a case for him as the Halos’ MVP this season. He couldn’t have helped San Diego?

      7) If you don’t like interleague play, consider this; Pittsburgh-Oakland-Kansas City were all at home this weekend; these three notoriously cash-poor, small market teams averaged 35,943 fans per game, with all three Giant-A’s games selling out. Only one of the nine games had a crowd under 35,000. Anything that helps these small market teams is good for the game.

      6) There have been eight big league games this season without a walk; of those eight games, two were umpired by Bill Miller. Dan Iassogna has had one game with no walks and two with just one. These are two pitcher-friendly umps.

      5) AJ Burnett broke a facial bone when he was practicing bunting in spring training; because of that, his first start wasn’t until April 21, so he missed four, maybe five starts.

With the spunky Pirates in midst of a pennant race, think they wish they had those games back, so Burnett could start them? He’s won his last seven starts, and figures to make the All-Star team. Pirates have a shot at their first winning record since 1992.

      4) Before age 35, RA Dickey had a career record of 22-28, not pitching at all in the majors at ages 27 or 32. Since then, he is 30-23, 11-1 this season. His WHIP had never been below 1.48 until 2010; the last three years, its been 1.19, 1.23, 0.92.

He was granted free agency every year from 2006-9, and was once traded for the immortal Jair Fernandez, who has had 82 AB’s at AAA and is now with the Astros’ AA team. Dickey is truly a remarkable story.

      3) ESPN used 94 (94!!!) microphones for each College World Series game, but none can be put on players/managers. They even had a mike under home plate. They had a ton of mikes on the outfield fence.

      2) If a vote was taken of major league players, on whether to get rid of or keep the DH, and the union kept its preferences quiet, which side do you think would win? Would any pitchers vote for it?

      1) American League crushed the NL again in interleague play, the ninth straight year; the winner of interleague play should earn home field in the World Series. Its just stupid that the All-Star Game decides anything that matters.

Public opinion: Solid support for Nats and Gio

Odds and public consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Monday.

        MLB:

Washington Nationals at Colorado Rockies (+125, N/A)

Gio Gonzalez has been one of the league’s most consistent starters since Opening Day. Washington has lost just three of his 16 starts this season and he has earned 7.63 units for his supporters to date. He also has 101 strikeouts in 84 2/3 innings.

        Consensus: Nationals, 63 percent

        WNBA:

Seattle Storm at Washington Mystics (2, 137)

It looks like early bettors are focusing on one telling trend for this one: The over is 15-5 in the last 20 meetings between the two teams. Neither of these clubs shoots the lights out, averaging fewer than 69 points per game, but this is the lowest total each of these clubs has seen in a while.

        Consensus: Over, 61 percent

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Justin Masterson, Cleveland Indians (4-6, 3.98 ERA)

Masterson has been dynamite in his last two outings, allowing just one unearned run in his last 16 innings on the hill. He threw the fourth complete game of his career last week, limiting the Reds to three hits and that one unearned run while walking none. Masterson has 18 strikeouts in his last two starts, turning it around after the Indians had dropped six of his last seven.

Gio Gonzalez, Washington Nationals (9-3, 2.55 ERA)

Gonzalez has won seven of his last nine and hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in an outing since his first start of the season. In his last turn, he labored early, needing 50 pitches to get through the first two innings against Tampa Bay. After that he went on to fire six innings of two-run ball, striking out four and walking two.

                  Slumping

Carlos Zambrano, Miami Marlins (4-5, 4.01 ERA)

Zambrano continues to struggle with his control and Miami has lost his last three starts. He was a little better last week against Boston, allowing three runs over five innings, but still walked four. Big Z now has 13 walks during the three-game skid and 42 free passes to first in 83 innings this year for Miami.

Liam Hendriks, Minnesota Twins (0-4, 7.39 ERA)

Hendriks gave up six runs (three earned) on eight hits in five innings during a 9-1 loss to the Pirates last week. It was his fourth consecutive loss and he’s allowed six home runs over that span. Dating back to last year, he is without a win in 10 starts and owns a 6.84 ERA.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Texas Rangers (-185, 10.5)

The Texas Rangers will trot out a rookie starter for the second consecutive game with the hope that Yu Darvish will fare better than Justin Grimm. Detroit scored five runs against Grimm in the first inning en route to an 8-2 triumph. The victory helped cool down a Texas club that had won eight of its previous nine games. Darvish will do battle with fellow first-year hurler Drew Smyly, who returns to the Tigers’ rotation after a stint on the 15-day disabled list.

Texas continues to lead the major leagues in most offensive categories, but it has been pitching that has fueled the recent surge. The Rangers have gotten three shutout wins this month, allowing just 18 runs in their 12 victories since June 8. Detroit has not been above the .500 mark since May 10, and Rick Porcello’s solid work on Monday notwithstanding, it has been a lack of consistent pitching behind ace Justin Verlander that has held the Tigers back.

TV: 8:05 p.m. ET, MLB Network (national), Fox Sports (Detroit), Fox Sports Houston (Texas)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers LH Drew Smyly (2-2, 3.96 ERA) vs. Rangers RH Yu Darvish (9-4, 3.45 ERA)

Smyly is making his first start since June 10, spending the last 15 days on the disabled list with a severe blister on his left middle finger. Prior to his absence, he had endured a rough stretch of six starts, allowing 23 runs in 29 2/3 innings as his ERA rose from 1.59 to 3.96. Smyly pitched six innings in a no-decision against Texas on April 22.

Darvish hasn’t been unhittable, but he has enjoyed a solid rookie campaign nonetheless, striking out 96 hitters in 88 2/3 innings. The newcomer has fanned 19 in winning his last two starts after allowing a career-worst six runs at Oakland on June 7. Darvish defeated Detroit on April 19, giving up one run on two hits (with five walks) in a road win.

                        TRENDS:

                        * Over is 10-3-2 in the last 15 meetings in Texas.
                        * Tigers are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Texas.
                        * Tigers are 4-0 in their last four games as an underdog.
                        * Rangers are 8-2 in their last 10 overall.

                        UMP TRENDS - Gary Darling:

                        * Over is 12-5-1 in Darlings last 18 games behind home plate.
                        * Tigers are 11-5 in their last 16 games with Darling behind home plate.
                        * Home team is 5-1 in Darlings last six games behind home plate.

                        WALK-OFFS:

                        1. The Rangers lost at home Monday for just the 17th time in their last 54 home contests.

                        2. The Tigers are just 2-for-21 against Darvish, with 3B Don Kelly (1-for-3) and DH Delmon Young (1-for-2 with a double) getting the only hits.

                        3. Texas hitters went 5-for-22 against Smyly in April, with CF Josh Hamilton (3-for-3, home run) doing the bulk of the damage.

Historic CFL Season Offers Plenty of Drama for Football Fans

The 2012 season will be a nostalgic one for the CFL as it marks the 100th anniversary of the Grey Cup.

But after a busy off-season, there will be plenty of drama for football fans long before the historic championship game is played in November.

The season opens with four new head coaches across the league, slotback Andy Fantuz playing closer to home and longtime West Division quarterbacks Ricky Ray and Henry Burris renewing their rivalry in southern Ontario.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Hamilton Tiger-Cats, meanwhile, will bid farewell to their longtime stadiums at the end of the season while B.C. Lions veteran receiver Geroy Simon is on the verge of a major milestone.

"There were significant changes in the off-season," commissioner Mark Cohon said in an interview. "I think all these stories build great momentum for us in 2012."

Fantuz, Burris and Ray will all be prominent figures Friday when the regular season kicks off.

Burris and Fantuz will both make their Hamilton debut when the Tiger-Cats host Saskatchewan. The Ticats acquired Burris from Calgary but the game will be especially significant for Fantuz, a native of Chatham, Ont., who spent his first six CFL seasons in Regina before signing with Hamilton as a free agent this off-season.

The game will also mark the CFL head-coaching debuts of Hamilton's George Cortez and Saskatchewan's Corey Chamblin, who served as the Ticats' defensive co-ordinator last season.

Later that night, the B.C. Lions host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in a Grey Cup rematch. That game will mark the coaching debut of Mike Benevides. He faces the unenviable task of replacing the legendary Wally Buono, who stepped down as Lions head coach following the club's Grey Cup win to concentrate on his duties as GM full-time.

Cohon will be in attendance, but not only to watch Benevides' coaching debut. Simon needs just 67 yards to break former Blue Bomber slotback Milt Stegall's all-time receiving yards record of 15,153.

If Simon, 36, breaks the mark Friday, play will stop and Cohon will honour Simon on the field.

"It's important as a league we celebrate these amazing milestones," Cohon said.

On Saturday night, Scott Milanovich will make his CFL head-coaching debut when Toronto visits Edmonton. But of more importance to Eskimos fans will be Ray's return to Alberta.

Ray spent nine seasons in Edmonton and led the club to two Grey Cup titles before being dealt to Toronto for journeyman quarterback Steven Jyles, Canadian kicker Grant Shaw and the No. 2 pick in the 2012 CFL draft. Eskimos GM Eric Tillman was widely criticized, not only for dealing a two-time Grey Cup champion who at age 32 would seem to still have plenty of good football left, but getting so little in return.

While Jyles is three years younger than Ray, he's poised to play for his fifth CFL team in seven seasons and is in his second stint with the Eskimos.

The opening week of the season will conclude July 1 with Montreal visiting Calgary. Alouettes starter Anthony Calvillo, pro football's career passing leader, will begin his 19th CFL season and 15th with the Als while Drew Tate begins his first full season as the Stampeders' starter after wresting the No. 1 job from Burris late last year, resulting in Burris, the CFL MVP in 2010, being traded in the off-season.

The season will culminate with a Grey Cup at Rogers Centre that will be unlike any other held in league history. And with the game being played literally in his backyard, it only adds to the expectations on Milanovich, who takes over a club that's missed the playoffs three times in the last four year.

"My answer to that question, because I know I'm going to get it every single day, is going to be boring and the same: We would want to win, and win the Grey Cup, no matter where it was," Milanovich said when asked about the expectation he faces in Toronto. "And so to me, it really doesn't put any more pressure on us. It is always the goal for every time in this league."

Milanovich knows what it takes to win a Grey Cup. He was part of two CFL championship teams as the Montreal Alouettes offensive co-ordinator in 2009-'10 with Calvillo at the controls. In Toronto, Milanovich will also have a reliable starter in Ray.

With all the off-season movement in the CFL coaching ranks, Calgary head coach/GM John Hufnagel and Montreal's Marc Trestman -- both entering their fifth season -- hold the distinction of being the league's longest-serving active head coaches.

But Benevides said his long relationship with Buono -- he began his CFL coaching career as Buono's special-teams co-ordinator in Calgary in 2000 -- has helped with the transition.

"From the outside looking in it would be extremely difficult if I did not have a relationship with him," Benevides said. "If I looked at it that way, it would be impossible.

"There will never be another Wally Buono, there will never be anybody to win that many games again as long as this league is around. I can only be myself."

Benevides inherits a solid team that includes quarterback Travis Lulay (CFL's outstanding player), tailback Andrew Harris (top Canadian in Grey Cup game), kicker Paul McCallum (CFL's top special-teams player) and offensive lineman Jovan Olafioye (West Division's top lineman). And a solid secondary featuring such CFL stalwarts as Dante Marsh and Korey Banks was bolstered by the addition of former Argos Byron Parker and Lin-J Shell.

Ending his inaugural season as Lions coach in Toronto would be especially memorable for Benevides, a Toronto native who is also the CFL's only Canadian-born head coach. However, history isn't exactly on Benevides' side.

Since Edmonton won the last of its five straight Grey Cups in 1982, only two teams have successfully defended their titles -- the '96-'97 Toronto Argonauts and '2009-'10 Montreal Alouettes.

What's more, only seven times in the last 25 CFL title games has one of the finalists reached the Grey Cup the following season.

Burris will lead Hamilton in its final season at Ivor Wynne Stadium, the club's home since 1950. Following the Ticats' final home game of 2012, the facility will be replaced with a new one that will be used during the 2015 Pan Am Games but be available for the CFL club in time for the 2014 campaign.

However, that will leave the Ticats without a home stadium for the 2013 season. The club approached McMaster University about playing some games there but the school declined, forcing team officials to continue their quest for a temporary home.

And Winnipeg will be staying put at Canad Inns Stadium, at least for this season. The club had hoped to play at brand new Investors Group Field in 2012, but construction delays will force the Bombers to remain at Canad Inns before moving into the facility in time for the next year.
