Saturday’s betting tips: France deals with dressing room spat

    Weather to watch

St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals – 17 mph winds are expected to blow out to left field.

San Francisco Giants at Oakland Athletics – 16 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

MLB: Under is 8-1-1 in Randall Delgado’s last 10 starts for Atlanta.

MLB: Tampa Bay Rays are 59-28 in their last 87 vs. a team with a losing record.

MLB: Chicago White Sox are 49-24 in their last 73 interleague games.

WNBA: Minnesota Lynx are 44-21 ATS in their last 65 games overall.

    Who’s not

MLB: Cubs are 1-6 in Paul Maholm's last seven starts.

MLB: Angels are 5-13 in Ervin Santana's last 18 starts.

MLB: Colorado Rockies are 2-12 in their last 14 overall.

MLB: Phoenix Mercury are 2-10 ATS in their last 12 games overall.

    Key stat

3 – Oakland A’s starter Travis Blackley and reliever Ryan Cook combined to hold the Los Angeles Dodgers to three hits Thursday, marking the third consecutive game that the staff allowed no more than three hits.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Epiphanny Prince, Chicago Sky – Prince suffered a broken foot last weekend and will be out of action indefinitely. Prince was leading the WNBA with 22.3 points per game. Chicago is set as a 14-point underdog at Minnesota.

    Game of the day

    Spain (-139) vs. France (+360), Draw (+235)

    Notable quotable

“There is no conflict. There were words exchanged after the game. There was a reaction. Some players were very angry. That is true. Certain things were said. We acted on those. People are worked up and angry after a defeat and there were raised voices. It did delay us in terms of when we could start preparing for the game with Spain but you have priorities that have to be dealt with.”- France head coach Laurent Blanc about the team trying to get past a dressing room altercation that ensued after the club’s disappointing loss to Sweden.

    Notes and tips

Spain has yielded more than one goal in just one of their last 25 Euro and World Cup matches, but the one team that did was France when it downed Spain 3-1 in the 2006 World Cup. However, France would love to get Karim Benzema on track. He has attempted 17 shots in the tournament, the most of anyone without a goal.

Minnesota Twins slugger Joe Mauer could return to the lineup Saturday after sitting out a few games with a bruised thigh. Mauer was available to pinch hit Friday and is hitting .314 with three homers and 37 RBI.

Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier has named Christian Ponder the Vikes' starting quarterback, according to a report by Fox Sports North late Thursday. Ponder replaced Donovan McNabb as the VIkes' starting QB last October and went on to complete over 54 percent of his 291 passes for 1,853 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. Those numbers were still noteworthy, particularly with the loss of No. 1 running back Adrian Peterson to injuries, as well as back-up wide receiver Michael Jenkins (knee injury) and tight end Visanthe Shiancoe's struggles.

      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

Today we're starting our look at college football teams for the upcoming season, well, upcoming in 10 weeks.......lol

Air Force—Last two years, covered twice in 12 tries as a home favorite.

Akron—Zips are 1-15 in MAC last two years, 10-20 vs spread as an underdog last three years, now have Terry Bowden as their coach.

Alabama—Covered 15 of last 18 non-SEC games. Last time they were a dog was ’08 SEC title game.

UAB—7-3-1 vs spread as home dog last four years; they allowed 71% (71%!!!) completions LY. That explains the new coach.

Arizona—Rich Rod has to clean up defense that allowed 4.7 ypc LY; Wildcats are 2-8-1 as road favorite last four years.

Arizona State—6-7 LY despite scoring 33.2 ppg with a +9 turnover ratio; are 14-22 in Pac-12 play last four years.

      **************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here....

      13) Some people are just idiots. Read more than once Friday how Lebron James “finally” won an NBA title. Fellas, the guy is 27. Finally is for Juwan Howard, a player with 19 years in the league getting his first ring.

      12) “Compete” is an underrated word in sports, it’s a huge part of why we love them. Its what makes the NFL and NHL great; every Sunday, any of the 32 NFL teams can win that day, or win the Super Bowl that season. LA Kings just won the Stanley Cup as the worst-seeded team in the playoffs. When you know guys are going all out to win because they know anything is possible, when they COMPETE, that’s what make sports so much fun.

ESPN had a reality show about the Arizona football team few years back; the season was a disaster, the coach lost the players' attention. At halftime of one game, he just pounds on a grease board and yells five times, hitting the board hard each time: "COMPETE!!! COMPETE!!! COMPETE!!! COMPETE!!! COMPETE!" It was excellent TV. The coach got fired.

      11) Alfonso Soriano is 36, and makes a lot of money; the Cubs want to get rid of him so badly that they’re willing to pay 90% of his salary, just so someone else will take him off their lineup card, opening the way for Brian LaHair to move to LF and Anthony Rizzo to step in at 1B.

      10) New Jersey Jets, who didn’t make season ticket holders buy PSLs for upper level seats, have now lowered ticket prices on 12,000 upper-tier seats at Swamp Stadium, some by significant amounts. Pro teams are increasingly worried that the at-home viewing experience has become so good, that less and less fans will want to come out and watch the event in person.

      9) Apparently, the Miami Heat’s inner circle partied at a place called Club LIV late Thursday/early Friday, and ran up a tab of around $200,000. That’s a lot of Coors Lites…..lol

      8) Texas Tech has a football game at North Texas this fall, that they were concerned wound wind up being shown on the new Longhorn Network, which Tech is opposed to, seeing as they compete against Texas. Tech threatened to buy out of the game if it was shown on the Longhorn Network, so ESPN will show it one of their other stations, saving Tech a lot of cash and UNT a home game.

      7) With Hubert Davis off to be an assistant coach at North Carolina, news has Jalen Rose replacing him on ESPN's Gameday.

      6) Three straight sellout crowds of 35,067 in Oakland this weekend. Gotta love interleague play.

      5) Media outlets have to be more responsible about tagging kids as “the next Lebron” at too early an age. Its irresponsible, unfair and in some cases, can really hamper a kid’s career, putting a target on him that’s he’s not ready to handle, especially if its done at too early an age.

      4) This kid Jabari Parker from Chicago, the top player in this coming year’s senior class, had been given “next Lebron” status; luckily, he seems to have a support system that will insulate him from this excessive exposure. He’s not allowed to give his phone number to college coaches and he doesn’t field calls from coaches, in the hope that the end of his high school days can be as normal as possible. Good luck there.

      3) Parker, who is an African-American Mormon, may take a two-year Mormon mission when he turns 19. From the sound of it, that would be one expensive mission, as he’s expected to be a 1-and-done college player, if he wants to be.

      2) Miami Heat winning the NBA makes the NBA look more like AAU/summer basketball, where All-Star teams are formed and the strong survive and the weak get thrashed, competitive balance be damned. Pro sports leagues need competitive balance to maintain fan interest.

Its an ominous day for teams in Cleveland-Minnesota-Sacramento, where star players are generally reluctant to stay. That’s what makes Spurs’ run of greatness so special; they had two stars (Robinson/Duncan) who played their whole career in San Antonio and made a small-market team great.

      1) Remember going out to watch the first game Lebron James played on ESPN, when he was in high school. Think Bill Walton worked the game on TV; anyway, everyone was so excited that he scored 31 points that night. I’m thinking, if he’s going to play in the NBA next year, he damn well better score 31 points in a high school game.

Fact is, though, he’s lived up to the hype, and is the best player since Michael Jordan hung ‘em up. Not crazy about the way he left Cleveland, but that’s his business.

Public opinion: Bettors like underdog Blue Jays in Miami

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Friday.

        MLB:

Toronto Blue Jays at Miami Marlins (-150, 8.5)

Heading into Friday’s action, the Marlins had won nine straight games against the Blue Jays, but early bettors are coming in hard on the visiting Blue Jays. You have to be a little concerned with Toronto lefty Brett Cecil though. He’s allowed six homers in his last three starts and hasn’t thrown in the sixth inning in any of those outings.

        Consensus: Blue Jays, 72 percent

        WNBA:

Chicago Sky at Minnesota Lynx (-14, 146)

After losing their first game of the year, the Lynx rebounded to drill the New York Liberty 102-70, cracking the 100-point plateau for the first time since the opening game of the season. Bettors should note Chicago’s Epiphanny Prince, the league’s top scorer, is out with a broken foot.

        Consensus: Over, 64 percent

NASCAR betting: Toyota/Save Mart 350 preview and odds

For the first time this season the NASCAR Sprint Cup series will be turning left and right as the series heads to Sonoma for Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 - the first road course race of the year.

One driver that has been competitive almost everywhere this season is Marcos Ambrose. He could be poised to go all the way to Victory Lane Sunday. Ambrose won last year’s race at Watkins Glen and was fifth there last season. With the way Ambrose has been running, he’s our favorite to add another road course win to his resume this weekend.

The three-time Australian Super Car champion is constantly a force to be reckoned on the road courses and is always expected to shine. For Ambrose though, the pressure to perform is the same on ovals and road courses.

“The expectation of me succeeded at a road course race is obviously very high, but that doesn’t change,” Ambrose told reporters. “I’m driving the No. 9 Stanley Ford Fusion for Richard Petty to win every race and not just two road course races, so I apply myself the same every week. The pressure is not much different, it’s just the weight of expectations this weekend and at Watkins Glen – the expectation of success is what we have to balance out.”

Check out the rest of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 preview and get Greg's picks to win here.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Madison Bumgarner, San Francisco Giants (8-4, 2.92 ERA)

Bumgarner continues to lead the Giants’ rotation. He allowed just one earned run on three hits over eight innings last weekend but was still stuck with a no-decision in San Francisco’s loss to Seattle. The big lefty has 16 strikeouts in his last two starts and has walked only 19 batters in 95 2/3 innings this season.

Ivan Nova, New York Yankees (9-2, 4.32 ERA)

The Yankees have won each of Nova’s last starts and he’s been absolutely dominant over his last three, allowing just two runs over the last 22 2/3 innings. After shutting out the Braves in Atlanta through seven innings, he followed that up by yielding just a solo homer in 7 2/3 innings at Washington. He owns a 0.84 WHIP in his last three starts.

                    Slumping

Kyle Kendrick, Philadelphia Phillies (2-7, 5.29 ERA)

Kendrick has lost each of his last three trips to the hill and owns a 9.00 ERA during the skid. While he managed to go 6 1/3 innings last week against Toronto, he still gave up five earned runs in a 6-2 loss. He has struck out 40 batters compared to 23 walks in 63 innings of work this year.

Josh Outman, Colorado Rockies (0-3, 8.41 ERA)

Outman was the first guy to take the hill under the Rockies’ new four-man rotation, so he’ll go here on just three days’ rest. He has lost three in a row, stinking it up with a 10.22 ERA. He hasn’t pitched into the sixth inning in any of his four starts and will be hard pressed to do so now that the club has issued a 70-pitch limit for its starters.

While you were sleeping: Catch up on MLB's best and worst bets
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The NBA Playoffs are over. Now what?

For sports bettors with basketball blinders on, this can be a scary time of the year. You want to keep wagering through the summer months but you haven't even made it to the seventh-inning stretch of a game yet. Don’t fret. Covers will get you up to speed on the best and worst bets from the diamond so far this season.

                      Best moneyline bet

                      Baltimore Orioles (39-30): 16.49 units

The Orioles continue to be the big breadwinners in the majors but have hit some speed bumps along the way, like their current three-game losing streak heading into Friday. Baseball bettors have been waiting for the other cleat to drop on Baltimore, which currently sits second in the American League East.

                      Worst moneyline bet

San Diego Padres (24-46): -17.57 units

Offense – or lack thereof – has plagued the Padres for a long time and 2012 is no exception. San Diego ranks last in the bigs in runs (3.3 per game) and rest in the basement of most hitting statistical categories. A rash of injuries to both the lineup and rotation is just throwing salt on the wound.

                      Best runline bet

Chicago White Sox (42-27 ATS): 20.30 units

The ChiSox are just three games above .500 (36-33) but have kept it close throughout the first half of the season. Chicago has capitalized on the 1.5-run spread – AKA the runline – scoring 4.68 runs and allowing 4.00 runs per game this season. Runline backers can thanks an impressive 19-13 road record for most of those units.

                      Worst runline bet

San Diego Padres (31-39 ATS): -22.98 units

Why the hell are people betting the Padres? Also burinng runline bettors are the Cleveland Indians (-17.51), Detroit Tigers (-13.57), and Colorado Rockies (-12.76).

                      Best over bet

                      Philadelphia Phillies (33-38): 44-26-1 over/under

The Phillies pitching staff is not playing up to oddsmakers standards, thanks in part to injuries to key starters like Roy Halladay. On offense, Philadelphia longs for the big bats of Ryan Howard and Chase Utley.

                      Best under bet

                      Los Angeles Angels (38-32) - 25-44-1 over/under

The addition of Albert Pujols was supposed to supercharge the Halos' offense. While that hasn’t quite been the case – averaging just 4.1 runs per game – the pitching staff has done the heavy lifting. The Angels own a 3.43 team ERA, third lowest in the majors.

                      Top money pitcher

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (11-1, 2.00 ERA): 11.92 units

The knuckleballer is the frontrunner for the National League Cy Young and has been nearly untouchable in recent starts. He hasn’t allowed an earned run in 41 2/3 innings, giving up just 16 hits in that span.

                      Worst money pitcher

Dan Haren, Los Angeles Angels (4-7, 3.97 ERA): -11.87 units

Haren can’t take all the blame for those units lost. The Angels have given the right-hander just 4.38 runs of support during his starts. Haren actually has the 20th best ERA in the AL and is 15th in strikeouts.

                      Top over ump

                      Paul Emmel: 12-1 over/under

Teams are combining for 9.77 runs per game when Emmel is behind home plate.

                      Top under ump

                      Tim Welke: 3-10 over/under

Teams are combining for 7.2 runs per game when Welke is calling balls and strikes.
