Friday's betting tips: Oswalt a huge fave in Texas debut

    Who’s hot

MLB :Yankees are 7-1 in their last eight meetings with the Mets.

MLB: Orioles are 10-1 in their last 11 games following an off day.

WNBA: San Antonio Silver Stars are 5-0 ATS in their last five games overall.

    Who’s not

MLB: Giants are 0-6 in the last six meetings in Oakland.

MLB: Rockies are 0-11 in their last 11 vs. American League West.

WNBA: Over is 7-21 in the Seattle Storm's last 28 home games.

    Key stat

19 – Germany has scored at least one goal in 19 straight games, its longest streak since a 20-game stretch from 1989 to 1991.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Mitch Moreland, Texas Rangers – Texas’ first baseman is considered questionable for Friday’s game with a leg injury after sitting out Wednesday’s contest against the Padres. He’s hitting .272 with 10 homers and 25 RBI.

    Game of the day

    Germany (-275) vs. Greece (+995), Draw (+410)

    Notable quotable

"Self-sacrifice – it's our main characteristic. We will give it all on the field. It will take a minor miracle on Friday. Germany are the favourites, we are the underdogs, but think about it: we will not play against the Germans ten times to see who wins the most. It's one match and we will fight to the end." – Greece midfielder Kostas Katsouranis ahead of Friday’s match with Germany. Katsouranis will wear the captain’s arm band with Giorgos Karagounis suspended.

    Notes and tips

Roy Oswalt makes his Texas Rangers debut Friday against the Colorado Rockies as a big -200 favorite. Oswalt, who signed with Texas on May 29, will replace Scott Feldman in the rotation. The decision gets Oswalt to the majors immediately, allows the club to move Feldman back to the bullpen, and also allows the team to give every other member of the rotation at least one extra day of rest due to Thursday's off day. Oswalt allowed two runs in six innings for Class AAA Round Rock on Sunday in a win over Oklahoma City. He also pushed his pitch count to 100 pitches.

Webb Simpson is trading his shot at becoming the seventh man to win the U.S. Open and British Open in the same year to witness the birth of his second child, according to an Orlando Sentinel report. "After winning, it's certainly a little bit harder to not go," Simpson told reporters at the Travelers Championship, according to the paper. "But in the grand scheme of life, it's a decision I know I'll always be happy I made." He opened at +4000 in British Open odds before pulling out.

The Los Angeles Dodgers continue to search for a bat to protect Andre Either in the lineup as Matt Kemp is expected to be out of action for another three weeks. The latest rumor has the Dodgers targeting Houston’s Carlos Lee. "He's really the only true, true threat," manager Don Mattingly told reporters. "They're going to stay away from him. All there is to it. As long as he's battling, I have no issues with him.” Either leads the league in RBI, but has just one homer in the last month.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Miami Heat steamrolled the Thunder, winning their second title, giving Lebron James his first NBA title. No joy in Cleveland today.

-- Plenty of joy in Seattle though, since people there are still very upset the league took the Sonics away and sent them to Oklahoma.

-- Is it too late to bring Jack McKeon back? Marlins are 33-36 and look lifeless most of the time.

-- Cardinals are 35-35, despite scoring 51 more runs than they've allowed. Pirates are 36-32, despite allowing 10 more runs than they've scored.

-- AL teams are 120-90 in interleague play this season, with this weekend the last of the interleague games until the World Series.

-- A's won eight of their last nine games; can we move to the NL?

      **************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) Larry Ellison owns the Oracle company, a bigtime tech firm; he’s supposedly worth $36B, that’s billion with a B, the 6th-wealthiest guy on the planet, but he hasn’t been able to buy an NBA team yet, having failed in trying to buy the Grizzlies and Warriors.

So what did Ellison buy this week? The island of Lanai in Hawai’i , an island with 50 miles of coastline and no traffic lights. Dole Pineapple used to own this island. I bought myself a hooded sweatshirt for my birthday LY. Ellison bought himself a Hawaii’an island. Cool.

      12) Guy named Warde Manuel is the new AD at UConn; his #1 job is to plot the course of the basketball program now that Jim Calhoun has turned 70 and most of the team has transferred out, since they’re ineligible for postseason next year. Calhoun is an icon, no brand-new AD is going to fire him, but how do you keep a program thriving with a dim outlook for this season and a 70-year old coach? Ain’t going to be easy.

      11) Calhoun missed 11 games LY with a bad back, but is healthier now; he rode 25 miles on a bike one day this week. If I rode 25 miles on an actual moving bicycle, the last 24 would probably be in an ambulance or a hearse.

      10) Troy Tulowitzki’s unusual leg injury left the Colorado Rockies without a competent big league shortstop; Marco Scutaro is trying to fill in, but at this stage of his career, he’s no SS. Colorado’s 9th-inning meltdown in Philly Wednesday was the worst inning I’ve seen a big league team play in a very long time. They need to plug someone in there who can at least throw the ball to first with some zip on it.

      9) US Open champ Webb Simpson is skipping the British Open to be with his pregnant wife, who is due around that time. I’ve always wondered if there are any golfers who would rather not cross the pond to play. If I remember right, Scott Hoch seemed reluctant at times to go over there.

      8) Florida coach Billy Donovan’s 18U All-Star team won their tournament down in Brazil, beating the host team 81-56 in the title game. VCU’s Shaka Smart and Gonzaga’s Mark Few were his assistants.

      7) Someone better warn the Royal Family; Dick Vitale is headed to England to watch tennis at Wimbledon next week. So much for quiet and serenity. Wimbledon is on Vitale’s bucket list, so its excellent that he’s getting to go.

      6) Dan Rooney owns the Steelers and is the US Ambassador to Ireland; he’d like the Steelers to play a regular season game in Ireland. They played a preseason game there once, but its tough to take a regular season home game away from Pittsburgh’s loyal fans.

      5) Oakland’s Tommy Milone is 5-1, 0.99 at home, 2-4, 7.42 on foreign soil. It really makes very little sense. Oakland Coliseum is a good pitcher’s park, but it ain’t that good.

      4) South Carolina is the first College World Series team to play two games in one day since 1980, and they won both. Wednesday’s rainout forced the twinbill to be played.

      3) If you’re headed to watch the Hartford Open golf tournament this weekend, I suggest sitting by the green at the 15th hole, the driveable par-4. There’s a good hamburger stand down the fairway, and the 18th tee is right behind the green. Can see a lot staying right there.

      2) Before the NBA Finals, ESPN’s Chris Broussard did a survey of 52 NBA types as to who would win, and Oklahoma City had a 33-19 edge in support, so I'm not the only one who was dead wrong about the Finals.

      1) NHL’s New Jersey Devils are having money problems similar to what the Phoenix Coyotes recently went through. Maybe Larry Ellison can buy the Devils, as long as he promises not to move the team to Hawai’i.

Public consensus: Bettors keep fading Cubs

Consensus percentages and odds current as of 9 p.m. ET.

        MLB:

Chicago Cubs at Arizona Diamondbacks (-140, 9)

Poor run support isn’t helping Jeff Samardzija at all on the hill. He has allowed more than three runs just once over his last six outings, but Chicago has won just once over that span. The Cubs rank 27th in the bigs averaging just 3.72 runs per game.

        Consensus: Diamondbacks, 72 percent

        WNBA:

San Antonio Silver Stars at Seattle Storm (-4, 141.5)

Seattle owns the league’s second best scoring defense, holding opponents to just 72.3 points per game and the Storm have had San Antonio’s number for a long time. The Storm are 9-1-1 against the spread in the last 11 meetings between the two teams.

        Consensus: Storm, 60 percent

              Armadillo's Write-Up

              Wednesday, June 20

AL teams were 3-2 Thursday, they're 120-90 against NL teams in interleague play this season, with three days to go.

Remember there are DHs in games in American League parks, no DHs in National League parks. It doesn't seem to affect totals either way.

              Hot pitchers
-- Hammel is 2-1, 2.76 in his last five starts.
-- Burnett is 6-0, 2.43 in his last six starts. Fister has a 2.90 RA in his seven starts this season.
-- Shields is 1-0, 2.57 in his last couple starts.
-- Pettitte is 3-1, 2.55 in his last six starts. Niese is 1-1, 2.70 in his last three starts.
-- Bailey is 1-0, 2.45 in his last couple starts.
-- Sale is 5-0, 1.91 in his last six starts. Greinke is 2-0, 1.93 in his last four starts.
-- Mazzaro is 2-1, 2.40 in his last three starts.
-- Richard is 2-0, 0.61 in his last couple starts. Millwood is 3-1, 2.14 in his last seven starts.
-- Parker is 2-1, 1.91 in his last five starts.
-- Billingsley is 2-1, 3.15 in his last three starts.

              Cold pitchers

-- Zimmerman is 0-1, 4.32 in his last four starts.
-- Lee is 0-2, 4.87 in his last six starts.
-- ASanchez is 1-5, 4.89 in his last seven starts. Romero has a 6.65 RA in his last four starts, but Toronto won them all, scoring 35 runs.
-- Blackburn has an 8.07 RA in his last six starts, but Minnesota won his last five anyway, scoring 38 runs.
-- Jurrjens was 0-2, 9.37 in four starts before going to minors, where he was 3-4, 5.18 in ten starts. Lester has a 6.19 RA in his last six starts.
-- Oswalt is making his first '12 start; he is 1-1, 5.87 in four minor league starts this year. For his career, he is 159-93, 3.21 in 326 starts. LY with the Phils, he was 9-10, 3.69. Friedrich is 0-2, 12.00 in his last couple starts.
-- Harrell is 1-4, 6.59 in his last five starts. Jimenez is 1-2, 4.94 in his last four outings.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thursday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

                  A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (7-2, 3.52 ERA)

If you haven’t been riding Burnett’s hot streak, you’ve missed out on a pile of cash. Pittsburgh has won each of his last eight starts and he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any of those outings while serving up only four homers during that stretch. However, the veteran did allow two of those dingers in his last trip to the hill, a 9-2 win over Cleveland.

Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees (3-2, 2.77 ERA)

Pettitte looks as dependable as he’s ever been on the hill with the Yankees winning five of his last six starts. He allowed more than two earned runs just once over that span – his lone loss – and is working on a 1.77 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP in his last three. He makes his first start against the Mets at Citi Field on Friday.

                  Slumping

Jair Jurrjens, Atlanta Braves (0-2, 9.37 ERA)

Jurrjens makes his return to the bigs after a long stint in the minors here, but we wanted to remind you how bad he was before he was sent down. He didn’t pitch into the sixth inning in any of his four starts earlier with the Braves and had eight strikeouts compared to 10 walks in 16 1/3 innings. In the minors he allowed nine runs in one start and 11 in another, finishing with a 5.27 ERA in 11 trips to the hill.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (2-8, 6.19 ERA)

The Giants keep sending Lincecum out there every fifth day despite his troubles. After holding the Diamondbacks to one earned run in a loss on May 30, he has allowed 14 runs and seven walks over his last three. He’s cost his supporters 11.48 units already this season.
