Wednesday’s betting notes: Rays SP call-up makes MLB debut

    Who’s hot

MLB: Giants are 8-0 in Ryan Vogelsong’s last eight starts.

MLB: Over is 31-15-3 in Mets last 49 overall.

WNBA: Washington has covered in four of its last six.

    Who’s not

MLB: Athletics are 6-13 in their last 19 games as an underdog.

MLB: Reds are 0-8 in their last eight games with Ron Kulpa behind home plate.

WNBA: Tulsa is 1-9 straight up this season and is riding a 2-4 slide against the spread.

    Key stat

87.1 – The Phoenix Mercury are allowing 87.1 points per game, easily the worst average in the WNBA this season. They have covered just once in eight games and are set as 1-point favorites at home to Washington on Wednesday.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jeremy Hellickson, Tampa Bay Rays – The Rays placed Jeremy Hellickson on the 15-day DL with shoulder fatigue, which opens the door for Chris Archer to make his MLB debut Wednesday against the Washington Nationals. Hellickson, the AL Rookie of the Year last season, is only expected to miss a couple of turns in the rotation. Meanwhile, Archer joins the big league club after going is 4-8 with a 4.81 ERA in 14 starts this year for Triple-A Durham. Archer is set to face off against Stephen Strasburg.

    Game of the day

San Francisco Giants at Los Angeles Angels (-162, N/A)

    Notable quotable

“It's clear who the favorites are. But we'll be trying to prove that the favorites don't have to necessarily always win. This is a particularly strong opponent but we haven't lost yet.” – Czech Republic keeper Petr Cech about Thursday’s Euro 2012 quarterfinal matchup with Portugal, which is set as a -150 favorite. The Czechs are priced as +400 underdogs and the draw is at +250.

    Notes and tips

The Colorado Rockies expect to have Carlos Gonzalez back in the lineup Wednesday. He has been sidelined with a strained right knee since Sunday, but told reporters he felt much better when he woke up Tuesday. CarGo’s hitting .335 with 17 homers and 51 RBI.

Veteran running back Cedric Benson could be a viable backup option to Raiders starter Darren McFadden. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Tuesday that Benson, who turns 30 in December, is on the Raiders' radar. Benson is likely to come at an affordable price. He had 895 carries the past three seasons with the Bengals, more than Ravens' starter Ray Rice (852) and Falcons' workhorse Michael Turner (813). He'd replace Michael Bush, McFadden's former backup who left via free agency and signed a four-year deal with the Bears.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Schenectady's Casper Wells got the game-winning hit in the 9th inning, as the Mariners won 12-9 at Arizona. Wells is now 9 for his last 17.

-- Ichiro Suzuki got his 2,500th career hit in that game.

-- Angels' P Jerome Williams spent Monday night in the hospital after he collapsed in the locker room after leaving that night's game. He has to go back to the hospital Wednesday for further testing.

-- Was it my imagination, or was there a Ford commercial on during last night's basketball game that was totally in Spanish?

-- AL teams were 10-4 vs NL teams Tuesday night.

-- Brandon McCarthy blanked the Dodgers for seven innings, throwing 81 pitches. Aaron Harang walked eight batters in 3.2 IP, with 105 PT, as the A's beat LA 3-0, their sixth win in their last seven games.

      ***********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

      13) From 2006-09, American League teams treated NL teams like a pinata, going 577-430 against them; last two years, NL teams narrowed the gap to 265-239, but so far this year, the AL has re-established dominance with a 109-82 record. The last time the NL won interleague play was 2003.

      12) Why is the AL so much better? There are just as many big money teams (Dodgers-Cubs-Mets-Astros-Phillies) in the NL as the AL (Bronx-Boston-Angels and now recently Texas), so its not that. Maybe just that smarter overachieving teams (Twins/A’s in early ‘00’s and now Tampa Bay) have all been in the AL.

      11) And yes, Astros are a big market team; last time I looked, Houston was the 4th-largest city in America.

      10) Attendance at interleague games has held steady; for the last 15 years, its always been between 31,090/game (’03) and 35,587 (’08). LY, an average of 33,604 fans attended interleague games.

      9) Last Sunday, 581,650 fans went to 15 major league games, an average of 38,779 per game, the most people to go to ballgames on a 15-game card since August 2008.

      8) The road team is 11-2 this season when Dillon Gee starts for the Mets.

      7) Cliff Lee hasn’t won a game yet in 11 starts; in his six road starts, the Phillies’ bullpen got the decision in all six games.

      6) If you’re a Kansas City Chiefs fan, are you fired up about having Romeo Crennel as your coach, Matt Cassel as your starting QB and Brady Quinn as his backup? I’m asking, seriously.

Quinn hasn’t thrown an NFL pass since 2009; if he couldn’t beat out Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow in Denver, I’d have reservations about his prospects for future success. Cassel never started a game in college, though he has made the playoffs as an NFL starter. Interesting team to follow.

      5) Was reading about the Redskins, and how Rex Grossman is likely to begin the season starting until RGIII is ready to play, and it dawned on me, a team once won the NFC Championship with Rex Grossman as its starting QB, and even now, that seems kind of amazing.

I’m going to wrap a trivia question around that tidbit sometime this fall.

      4) Former DePaul coach Jerry Wainwright is back in the Big East, as Director of Basketball Operations at Marquette; he was an assistant coach at Fresno State LY. With Doc Sadler the new DOBO at Kansas, these off-the-practice floor, administrative jobs are starting to get populated with more well-known names.

      3) Oklahoma City stormed to a 33-19 lead after the first quarter in Game 4, first time in series they led after first quarter, but they couldn't maintain momentum and lost to a Miami team that just seems more mature. Harden's back-rimming a breakaway layup when OC was down a hoop personfied how the Thunder just hasn't gotten over the hump in this series.

      2) Thunder players other than Westbrook/Durant were 11-31 from floor in Game 4; none of them scored a point in the game's last 16:00. As good as the role players were in the San Antonio series, they've been unproductive in this series. Norris Cole was huge for Miami in the second quarter.

      1) 30 times an NBA team has led the Finals 3-1; 30 times they've won the championship. If you're Scott Brooks, you're preaching how if you win the next game, then they have to beat you at home to win it. There's a first time for everything, but for now, it looks like Miami's about to win a title.

Westbrook had a great game, with 43 points, seven boards, five assists, but his mental blunder when he fouled in the last 0:13 cost his team their last chance to tie/win the game. Little things make a big difference.

Public opinion: Bettors back Blanton off complete game

Consensus percentages and odds current as of 8:30 p.m. ET, Tuesday.

        MLB:

Colorado Rockies at Philadelphia Phillies (-145, 9.5)

Both the Rockies and Phillies have taken their lumps over the last little while. Colorado went into Tuesday’s action having won just once over its last 11 games, while Philadelphia had dropped 12 of their last 15. Joe Blanton gets the ball after allowing just a solo homer in a complete-game win over the Twins, likely tipping the balance here.

        Consensus: Phillies, 63.7 percent

        WNBA:

Tulsa Shock at Los Angeles Sparks (-12.5, 160.5)

The Sparks opened as high as 14-point favorites at some shops but are getting a lot of support now that the line has dropped a bit. The Shock are coming off their first win of the season and have actually gone 9-1-1 against the spread in the last 11 meetings with L.A.

        Consensus: Sparks, 64 percent

              Armadillo's Write-Up

              Wednesday, June 20

AL teams were 10-4 Tuesday, they're 109-82 against NL teams in interleague play this season, with five days to go.

Remember there are DHs in games in American League parks, no DHs in National League parks. It doesn't seem to affect totals either way.

              Hot pitchers
-- Blanton is 2-0, 3.45 in his last couple starts.
-- Hanson is 2-0, 2.66 in his last three starts. Hughes is 3-0, 1.69 in his last three outings.
-- Gallardo is 3-1, 3.90 in his last five starts.
-- Cahill is 3-0, 0.77 in his last three starts.
-- Masterson has a 1.80 RA in his last three starts.
-- Strasburg is 5-0, 3.41 in his last five starts.
-- Doubrant is 6-2, 4.37 in his last eight starts.
-- Giants won last eight Vogelsong starts (5-0, 1.76).
-- Milone is 4-1, 1.34 in his five home starts (2-4, 6.45 on road).

              Cold pitchers
-- White is 2-5, 6.15 in eight starts for Colorado.
-- Lyles is 1-3, 8.42 in his last five starts. Chen is 0-1, 8.10 in his last two outings.
              -- Injury-ravaged Toronto still hasn't named a starter; could be a minor league call-up.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Stephen Strasburg, Washington Nationals (8-1, 2.45 ERA)

Strasburg has won five consecutive starts and allowed more than two runs in just one of those. He has struck out 100 batters in 77 innings and has a 1.04 WHIP this year. He was pulled after six innings in his last start due to a cut on his right middle finger but should be fine to throw against Tampa Bay.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (6-2, 2.29 ERA)

The Giants have won each of Vogelsong’s last eight trips to the mound and he hasn’t allowed more than three runs in an outing since the end of April. Vogelsong threw seven innings for his fourth straight start last week, allowing two earned runs on four hits while striking out six in a 4-2 win over Seattle. Vogelsong sits eighth in the MLB starter money standings, having earned 6.83 units.

                  Slumping

Anthony Bass, San Diego Padres (2-7, 4.48 ERA)

The Padres have lost four of Bass’ last five starts and the Michigan native was hit hard again last week by Oakland. He gave up nine runs (seven earned) on eight hits while walking three in that one and has allowed at least four earned runs in five consecutive trips to the hill. He hasn’t thrown 100 pitches in a start since May 4.

Francisco Liriano, Minnesota Twins (1-7, 6.24 ERA)

We’re probably kicking Minnesota’s lefty when he’s down here, but it’s hard to pass by his bad fortune. He gave up just one hit in six innings against Milwaukee last week and still ended up taking his seventh loss of the season. That’s because the one hit was a three-run homer to Ryan Braun that lifted the Brewers to a 5-3 win. Liriano is still struggling with his control, having walked four batters in that loss and has cost 6.33 units for his supporters.
