Santana looks to retain home dominance

    BALTIMORE ORIOLES (39-28)

    at NEW YORK METS (36-32)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. EDT
Line: New York -155, Baltimore +145, Total: 8

After R.A. Dickey’s second consecutive one-hitter in Monday’s series opener, the Mets will look to blank the Orioles again in the middle game of a three-game set at Citi Field on Tuesday night.

Johan Santana takes the hill for the Mets, having struggled in his past two starts (9.00 ERA) since he threw a no-hitter in his last home start. The good news for him is that those two poor outings were on the road and he has been far better at Citi Field this year (1.30 ERA, 0.91 WHIP), than away from home (6.37 ERA, 1.48 WHIP). On Tuesday, he’ll faces Tommy Hunter, who has a 5.58 ERA on the season. The bad news for Baltimore is that he’s even worse on the road with an 8.31 ERA and 1.81 WHIP. And in his past three starts (2 at home, 1 on road), he has a 7.31 ERA and .343 opponents’ BA. While the Orioles have been strong against left-handed starters this season at 11-6 (.647), the Mets have dominated righty starters in a larger sample size at 28-17 (.622). The Mets are also 4-0 against the Orioles over the past three seasons and even as significant favorites, should be the play here. Take NEW YORK to win again.

This rare four-star FoxSheets trend also favors the Mets:

Play Against - Road underdogs with a money line of +125 to +175 (BALTIMORE) - after a game where they had 4 or less hits, with a rested bullpen - threw 5 innings or less over last 3 games. (42-7 over the last 5 seasons.) (85.7%, +31.5 units. Rating = 4*).

Hunter has never started against the Mets in his career, and averaging fewer than six innings per start this season, will need help from his bullpen. Fortunately, Baltimore relievers have been willing to oblige him with a fantastic 2.39 ERA and 1.10 WHIP on the season. Those numbers are even better away from home with a 1.67 ERA and 0.99 WHIP to go along with a perfect 9-0 record. Still, their floundering offense with just nine total runs over their past four outings make the O’s a sketchy play.

Santana does not have the same benefit of an elite bullpen with Mets’ relievers sporting a 5.40 ERA and 1.54 WHIP on the season. However, they have been better at home with a 4.23 ERA and 1.42 WHIP at Citi Field. The Mets offense has also been cold with just 10 runs in their past four games, but hopefully with the emergence of 1B Ike Davis, who hit a grand slam in their 5-0 win over Baltimore last night, they can continue to pick up the offensive production. Davis, who has a .196 BA for the season, is currently on a tear, batting .462 with 2 HR and 11 RBI in his past nine games. Take the home favorites here.
