Betting tips: Brewers scratch SP Marcum vs. Blue Jays

    Weather to watch

Miami Marlins at Boston Red Sox – 11 mph winds are expected to blow out to left-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Heat are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 home games.

Euro 2012: France has just one loss in its last seven competitive matches.

MLB: Pirates are 7-0 in their last seven games as a favorite.

WNBA: Connecticut Sun are 18-6 ATS in their last 24 vs. Eastern Conference.

    Who’s not

NBA: Thunder are 2-5-1 ATS in their last eight games following a ATS loss.

MLB: Rockies are 1-10 in their last 11 overall.

WNBA: Liberty are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall.

    Key stat

45 – The New York Liberty are coming off a franchise-worst 45-point loss at Connecticut as 8-point underdogs. The Liberty shot just 36.5 percent from the floor and are set as a 6.5-point underdogs Tuesday in Atlanta.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Andriy Shevchenko, Ukraine - Ukraine's veteran striker participated in Monday's training session, but is still considered "50-50" to play in Tuesday's final group game against England. He scored both of his club's goals in its 2-1 victory over Sweden.

    Game of the day

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-3.5, 192)

    Notable quotable

“I don't give a damn how we get four. We can win 32-31. It doesn't matter to me. We can win any type of game. We can win a gritty game, a high-paced game, but we take every game as its own. We don't go into a game saying this is what type of a game it's going to be. We going into a game saying this is how we're going to play. We're going to be aggressive, we're going to try to control the rebounding, have low turnovers, and we're going to try to get some good shots up, and try to get to the free-throw line.” – Miami Heat’s LeBron James ahead of Tuesday’s Game 4 against the Thunder.

    Notes and tips

Shaun Marcum will not make Tuesday’s scheduled start against his former team, the Toronto Blue Jays. Marcum is experiencing tightness in his right shoulder, though the severity of the injury isn’t known yet. He is 5-3 with a 3.39 ERA this season for the Milwaukee Brewers, who have yet to name a starter to fill in for Marcum yet.

France coach Laurent Blanc is considering lineup changes to his roster for Tuesday’s game against Sweden. France would finish first in Group D with a victory and will go through with a draw, but has three players coming into this match with yellow cards. Blanc is considering resting right back Mathieu Debuchy, center half Philippe Mexes and right winger Jeremy Menez with Sweden already eliminated. If any of those three players are booked again Tuesday, they would be suspended for the quarterfinals.

Three Toronto FC players were arrested for public intoxication early Sunday after their involvement in a bar fight in Houston. The status of Miguel Aceval, Luis Silva and Nick Soolsma for Wednesday’s game against Houston is unknown as of yet. Toronto owns an MLS-worst 1-10 record this year.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- RA Dickey is first pitcher since 1988 to throw consecutive 1-hitters; he is the best pitcher in baseball right now. Interesting story.

-- Aaron Hill hit for the cycle as Arizona won its sixth straight home tilt, after getting shut out in Anaheim Saturday and Sunday.

-- Make sure your kids are lefty; why? Oliver Perez is back in the major leagues, with Seattle. Any lefty with a pulse has a shot at the majors.

-- NBA doctors red-flagged Jared Sullinger's back, which will cost him a fortune in the draft next week. Wonder if he'd be better off going back to Ohio State for another year to show that his back is OK. If it is OK.

-- Charlotte Bobcats pulled a stunner by hiring Mike Dunlap, the former St John's/Arizona/Oregon assistant who also was once as assistant for the Nuggets, and won a national title in D-II ball at Metro State.

-- This is a big blow to Steve Lavin's program, since Dunlap is a superior tactician, and Lavin.....well, he isn't. He's more of a recruiter.

      **************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) As the last week of interleague play starts, we see that the American League has opened up a 99-78 lead in their season series, after going 21-7 Saturday/Sunday. To me, this is how home field advantage for the World Series should be decided. Lot more meaningful than who wins the freakin’ All-Star Game.

      12) Not only is Cliff Lee winless in 11 starts, he’s the only pitcher in major leagues this season to go more than nine innings in a game, throwing 10 scoreless frames in an April game in San Francisco. Too bad for him Matt Cain threw nine scoreless innings in that game.

      11) Miami Heat’s Udonis Haslem had a pretty good high school coach; Frank Martin, the ex-Kansas State coach, new coach at South Carolina.

      10) Webb Simpson won the US Open, but he never once led the tournament while he was out on the course. He posted a number late Sunday afternoon, then sat back and watched everyone else crumble.

      9) No team has ever been down 3-1 in NBA Finals and come back to win, so while Tuesday’s game isn’t a must-win for the Thunder, it’s a damn-sure-better-win kind of game.

      8) Oklahoma City coach Scott Brooks turned down a three-year, $11M extension from the Thunder during the season; apparently, he and his agent want a guaranteed fourth year.

      7) Thunder must be making money hand-over-fist; their waiting list for season tickets is now over 2,000 people.

      6) Texas A&M has moved to SEC, so why are they playing Sam Houston State and South Carolina State? Playing two I-AA teams shouldn’t be allowed. Play a couple Sun Belt teams, for Pete's sake.

      5) When prize QB prospect Gunnar Kiel stiffed LSU and went to Notre Dame, Bayou Bengals signed a 6-3, 270 QB, Jeremy Liggins, but now his status this year is in doubt because of low test scores.
If he doesn't raise his test score, he'll go to a junior college this year, where he’ll play for a coach whose team just got a whole lot better with an SEC recruit under center. If he gets his scores up, he still can go to LSU.

      4) Braves are bringing Jair Jurrjens back up from the minors to take Brian Beachy’s (elbow) spot in the rotation Friday night. Beachy tore his UCL as baseball players continue to drop like flies.

      3) Top 125 money winners on the PGA Tour Money List keep their card for next year, so it’s a big deal to be in the top 125.
#124 on the list is Will Claxton, with $351,062 in earnings this year.
Next is Retief Goosen, who already has his card for several years due to pass victories. #126, or right now the first man out, is Roberto Castro, with $345,674.
Usually takes between $650,000-$700,000 in earnings to finish in the top 125 and keep your card for next year.

      2) The last fifteen golf majors were won by 15 different players.

      1) Monday was National Panic Day, which is fitting, seeing as my 26-man keeper fantasy baseball team has only eight healthy major league hitters, and you play nine a week. Eleven injured players, three more in minor leagues makes for an ugly season so far. Need the All-Star break, and soon!!!

Public opinion: Thunder bettors step up for Game 4

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Monday.

        NBA:

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-3.5, 192)

The Oklahoma City Thunder were the best free-throw shooting team in the NBA during the regular season, but they made just 15 of 24 from the charity stripe in Game 3’s loss. That isn’t scaring off early bettors, though. The Thunder are 5-2-1 against the number in their last eight road games.

        Consensus: Thunder, 61.9 percent

        MLB:

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox (-190, N/A)

The White Sox own Chicago right now but they’ve lost four of their last five heading into Monday’s action. Jake Peavy takes the mound for the Pale Hose and has allowed just five runs over his last three starts.

        Consensus: White Sox, 66 percent

          NBA
          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, June 19

-- Miami led Game 1 by 18, led 16-2 in Game 2, and were up 26-20 after first quarter in Game 3, so Thunder has to play better right from the tap here. Teams down 3-1 in NBA Finals are 0-30 in series, so while this is not a must-win game, its a damn-well-better win game for OC.

-- Thunder bench dominated first two games (+51 in 145 minutes), while Miami bench was -37 in 82 minutes, but in Game 3, OC's subs were -30 in 78:00, while Miami's bench was +17 in 39:00.

-- Thunder's FG% went down, from 51.9% in Game 1, to 43% in second game, to 42.8% in Game 3, which is normal; Miami's went up from 46.2% in Game 1 up to 47.4% in Game 2, but went down to 37.8% last game, but they were 31-35 from foul line, after taking only 43 foul shots combined in first two games.

-- Miami is 18-46 from arc in three games; Battier is 11-15, rest of squad is 7-31. Battier only took two shots last game, but he made both of 'em.

-- Sefolosha/Ibaka/Perkins, OC's"Little 3" starters, went just 4-15 from floor in Game 2, after going 9-17 in Game 1- they were 8-18 last game. Harden was 2-10 from floor and played poorly in 4th quarter.

-- Thunder is 4-4 on road in playoffs; Miami is 9-2 at home. Heat is 6-2 vs spread in game following a win in same series.

-- Notice that Miami had 54-55 points at halftime in first two games; in Game 3, they only had 47, but still led by a point.

-- Over is now 6-2-1 in last nine Miami games.

-- Notice that Thunder's scoring went from 105 to 96 to 85; how do they score? Transition hoops become more scarce as a series goes on, so they better execute better in halfcourt, or else........

Thunder at Heat Game 4: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-3.5, 192.5)

          THE STORY:
For LeBron James, redemption stands just two victories away. James and the Miami Heat have a 2-1 lead in the NBA Finals and can move within a win of capturing the title as they host the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 4 on Tuesday night. James has been sensational so far in the series, dominating at the offensive end while frustrating Thunder superstar Kevin Durant in the process. Durant will need to stay out of foul trouble if Oklahoma City hopes to even the best-of-seven.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ABC, TSN

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Durant has played fewer minutes than he is accustomed to over the last two games, thanks to some rare foul issues. Durant picked up his fourth foul in the third quarter and was forced to the bench just as the Thunder appeared to be taking control of the game. Sure enough, the Heat fought back from a 10-point deficit and Durant was unable to put together yet another fourth-quarter rally as the Thunder dropped their second game in a row. "It's a tough break for us, man," said Durant, who finished with 25 points. "You know, I hate sitting on the bench, especially with fouls."

ABOUT THE HEAT: He has been called a turncoat, a prima donna and a choker - but James has managed to shrug off the haters and is putting together one of the best postseason performances in memory. He took over when the Heat needed him down the stretch, scoring 29 points and adding 14 rebounds. James has put together 13 straight games of 25-plus points so far in the postseason, looking as strong as he did in capturing the regular-season MVP award. "Last year I didn't make enough game-changing plays, and that's what I kind of pride myself on," he said. "I didn't do that last year in the Finals."

          TRENDS:
          - Over is 9-3-1 in Heat's last 13 overall.
          - Heat are 12-4 ATS in their last 16 home games.
          - Thunder are 11-4-1 ATS in their last 16 games overall.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Of the last 12 NBA Finals tied 1-1 after two games, the team winning Game 3 has gone on to capture the title 11 times. The only exception: Last year's championship, when Miami was up 2-1 against Dallas but lost the final three games.

          2. The Thunder have connected on just 36 percent of their shots from 15 feet or further. They shot 45 percent from that range in the conference finals against San Antonio.

          3. Heat F Shane Battier has 11 3-pointers through the first three games, tying Rashard Lewis for the most through three games in Finals history.

                Armadillo's Write-Up

                Tuesday, June 19

AL teams were 3-6 Monday, they're 99-78 against NL teams in interleague play this season, with six days to go.

Remember there are DHs in games in American League parks, no DHs in National League parks. It doesn't seem to affect totals either way.

As I type this at 2:25am late Monday night, neither Houston-Milwaukee had named a starting pitcher for Tuesday's game.

                Hot pitchers
-- Kuroda is 3-0, 1.29 in his last four starts. THudson is 1-1, 1.80 in his last couple starts, but he did miss a start with an injured foot in between those two games.
-- Reds won five of last six Leake starts (3-0, 4.25).
-- Lynn is 4-1, 3.00 in his last five starts. Verlander is 1-0, 2.57 in his last couple starts.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox (7-, 5.38 ERA)

Buchholz has won three straight starts, allowing just three runs while striking out 22 batters over that span. The BoSox hoped he would be able to start Sunday night on regular rest, but he felt he needed a few extra days after throwing at least 100 pitches in four straight outings. Boston is averaging 6.6 runs in his starts this year.

Lance Lynn, St. Louis Cardinals (10-2, 2.42 ERA)

Lynn struck out a career-high 12 batters against the White Sox to join R.A. Dickey as the only 10-win pitchers in the bigs. Lynn didn’t allow a run in 7 1/3 innings and now has 23 punch-outs in his last 13 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old sits ninth in MLB starter money standings, having earned 6.57 units for his supporters.

                    Slumping

Scott Feldman, Texas Rangers (0-6, 6.50 ERA)

Feldman is still looking for his first win of the season and his problems continued last week against Arizona. He started strong by striking out the side in the first, but ended up allowing four earned runs on eight hits in five innings of work. He now has a 10.50 ERA and a 1.75 WHIP in his last three starts for the Rangers.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (9-3, 3.34 ERA)

Hamels just hasn’t been himself over his last few trips to the mound. He gave up six earned runs on eight hits, including a couple of homers last week at Minnesota. It was the second straight start that saw him blow a three-run lead and he has now served up eight home runs in his last four outings.
