Sunday's betting tips: Game 3 winner has huge edge in finals

    Weather watch

Thunderstorms are in the forecast for Detroit where the Rockies and Tigers wrap their interleague series Sunday. There is a 60 percent chance of showers and winds blowing SW at Comerica Park. Game-time temperatures will be in the mid 70s.

    Who’s hot?

    MLB: New York Yankees

The Bronx Bombers took a seven-game winning streak into Saturday’s interleague date with the Washington Nationals. New York is on top of the AL East at 38-25 and has won 4.37 units this season.

    WNBA: Minnesota Lynx

The Lynx have yet to taste defeat this season, winning 10 in a row heading into Sunday’s showdown with the Seattle Storm. Minnesota is 7-3 ATS during this hot start to the schedule.

    Who’s not?

    MLB: Seattle Mariners

The Mariners have lost six in a row heading into Saturday’s date with the San Francisco Giants. Seattle has been outscored 32-13 during this skid.

    WNBA: Tulsa Shock

The Shock are horrible and have been horrible ever since setting up shop in Oklahoma. They’re 0-9 SU and 4-5 ATS to open the 2012 season, failing to cover the spread in four of their last five games.

    Key stat

2 – The Netherlands needs to beat Portugal by two goals and have Denmark lose to Germany in Group B play at the Euro Cup. With their tournament hopes hanging in the balance, expect the Dutch attack to be at full blast Sunday. The game total is set at 2.5, with the Over priced at -138.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Nick Swisher, New York Yankees – Swisher limped off the field with an undisclosed leg injury against the Nationals Saturday, and is listed as day-to-day. The right fielder is hitting .255 with 40 RBIs and 10 home runs this season.

    Game of the day

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-4, 193.5)

    Notable quotable

"We're approaching some safety concerns at the speeds we are going. We've got to walk that fine line of killing people and creating excitement." – Sprint Cup driver Greg Biffle, after speeds reached 218 mph during the test sessions at Michigan.

    Notes and tips

-- In an NBA Finals tied 1-1, the winner of Game 3 has gone on to win the championship 85.3 percent of the time. Miami and Oklahoma City are currently priced as a pick’em in series prices around Las Vegas.

-- Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Brett Cecil makes his first appearance of 2012. He lost his final four starts of 2011 and hasn’t picked up a win in 10 outings, going back to July 29, 2011.

-- Germany’s Mario Gomez has scored all three of his team’s goals during the first two games of Group B play at the Euro Cup. Oddsmakers have Gomez priced at +450 to be the first goal scorer in Sunday’s matchup with Denmark.

-- Away favorites are 8-4 ATS in WNBA action. Minnesota is a 10.5-point road favorite versus Seattle Sunday.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Pointspreads on six of the more interesting college football games in '12:

-- Clemson -2.5 over Auburn on a neutral field in Atlanta.

-- Oklahoma -5 over Texas on neutral field at Texas State Fair (Dallas).

-- LSU -2 over Alabama. Crimson Tide plays Mississippi State the week before the LSU game; Bayou Bengals have that Saturday off.

-- Missouri's SEC debut comes as a 4-point home underdog Sept 8 against the Georgia Bulldogs.

-- Biggest spread posted early was USC -36 over Colorado.

-- TCU is in much deeper water now in the Big X; they're +6 when they play West Virginia, +7.5 when they play the Longhorns.

      **************

Armadillo: Sunday's LIst of 13: Happy Father's Day to all you dads.......

      13) OK, we need more golf tournaments on at night, which means more of the majors need to be played on the west coast. Its just better this way.

      12) Neat stat: Thursday/Friday at the US Open, for the first six holes, the entire field combined to shoot 826 over par. Seriously, they did.

      11) Jordan Zimmerman, pitcher is batting .318. Ryan Zimmerman, overpaid 3B who is killing my fantasy team, is batting .234. But I'm not bitter.

      10) When Blue Jays shift against a lefty hitter, they keep their 2B pretty much where he belongs and put their 3B in rightfield. Makes sense to displace one less guy from his normal position.

      9) Has to be weird for NL teams to play in Skydome and Tropicana Field, since they're the only two artificial turf fields left in the big leagues.

      8) Its June 17 and Cliff Lee is still winless; he had a 5-2 lead in the 8th at Skydome Saturday, but defense unraveled behind him and the Blue Jays won in extra innings. Go figure.

      7) When the Braves sent Jair Jurrjens to AAA earlier this year, we didn't expect him to stay there very long, just a form of shock therapy, so he could get back to the big leagues. Well, Jurrjens is 3-4, 5.27 in AAA, with opposing hitters batting .294 against him. That not good.

      6) Brandon Inge has 30 RBI in his first 28 games for the A's; after watching former catcher Josh Donaldson try like hell but fail miserably for six weeks, Inge seems like freakin' Michael Jack Schmidt at the hot corner.

      5) Pawtucket Red Sox have a pitcher named Billy Buckner; after going 4-3, 3.20 in the Eastern League, he has a 10.54 ERA in two AAA starts.

      4) Through first two games of NBA Finals, Miami's bench is -37 in its 82 minutes of play; Thunder's bench is +51 in 145 minutes of play.

      3) Three of the eight amateurs in the US Open made the cut; that would be a good prop bet for next year's Open; over/under on Ams making the cut.

      2) Odds to win the US Open, established after the third round: Furyk 9-4, McDowell 5-2, Westwood 6-1, Woods 12-1, Els 15-1, Hossler 100-1.
17-year old amateur Beau Hossler better keep his mom away from Eldrick Woods; she is beautiful, seriously beautiful.

      1) Happy Father's Day to all you dads out there, especially my dad, the best father a guy could have. Thanks for everything.

Public opinion: Game 3 total drops despite public playing Over

NBA: Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-4, 193.5)

The NBA Finals shift to South Beach as the Miami Heat entertain the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 on Sunday night. The Heat escaped with a split if the opening two games in Oklahoma City, fending off the Thunder 100-94 after nearly squandering a 13-point advantage.

        Consensus: 68 percent, Over

WNBA: Connecticut Sun at Atlanta Dream (-2, 165)

Connecticut tries to jump to the top of the Eastern Conference with a win over Atlanta Sunday. The Sun sit just behind Chicago in the standings and have won three of their last four games, going 3-1 ATS in that span. The Dream have lost five of their last seven meetings with Connecticut.

        Consensus: 56 percent, Connecticut

MLB: San Francisco Giants at Seattle Mariners (-113)

The early money is fading the slumping Mariners and staff ace Felix Hernandez, who has just one win in his last six starts. The Giants send Madison Bumgarner to the hill. The young lefty has won three straight outings and has trimmed his ERA to just north of 3.00.

        Consensus: 75 percent, San Francisco

NASCAR betting: Quicken Loans 400 preview and odds

For the second week in a row the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads into somewhat unfamiliar territory with Sunday’s Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

This week marks the second straight track that the series will visit that has undergone a recent repaving. Teams got a sneak peek with a testing session at the two-mile oval near Detroit in April and speeds were reportedly nearing 215 miles per hour.

While it certainly will be fast when the green flag falls Sunday, there are still some big question marks. Detroit is, of course, home to the large automakers and this week the three favorites just happen to represent three different makes: Toyota, Chevy and Ford.

Denny Hamlin, driving a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, has won the last two June races here and after staging a heroic comeback last week at Pocono, he rallied back from a lap down to finish fifth. That fifth-place finish was his fifth Top-5 showing in his last seven races. The streak started with his second win of the season at Kansas. Hamlin has shown he has the strength to get the job done and add a third win to his Michigan resume. Hamlin is fourth in points and has one less thing to worry about. He can focus on wins as the Chase is approaching faster and faster each week.

“We've kind of gotten into the part of the season where you see the same kind of top-five guys or top-10 guys week in and week out,” Hamlin told reporters.”You definitely will see a shuffle these next few weeks as far as that's concerned just because there's so many unknowns these next three weeks. I'm happy we're in the position we are and we don't have to make up points these next three weeks and we can focus on trying to go out and get race wins. If I was 10th to 12th with no race wins, I'd say these next three weeks would be stressful for those guys."

Odds to win the Quicken Loans 400 (Provided by *** Global)

          Jimmie Johnson 6-1
          Greg Biffle 7-1

            Armadillo's Write-Up

            Sunday, June 17

Oklahoma City (1-1) @ Miami -- Not sure how to organize this, so I'll go with individual notes........

-- Miami led Game 1 by 18, led 16-2 in Game 2, so Thunder has a really serious problem as far as preparation and being ready to play physical ball right from opening tip. This is their #1 problem heading to Miami.

-- Thunder bench dominated even in Game 2 loss; they're now +51 in 145 minutes on floor, while Miami bench is -37 in 82 minutes.

-- Thunder's FG% went down, from 51.9% in Game 1, to 43% in second game, which is normal; problem is, Miami's went up from 46.2% up to 47.4%- they took five less 3's and seven more foul shots.

-- Miami is 14-33 from arc in two games; Battier is 9-13, rest of squad is 5-20. The man guarding Battier has to help less on defense.

-- Sefolosha/Ibaka/Perkins, OC's"Little 3" starters, went just 4-15 from floor in Game 2, after going 9-17 in Game 1. Harden had five points; he is a critical player for Oklahoma City.

-- Thunder is 4-3 on road in playoffs; Miami is 8-2 at home. Heat is 5-2 vs spread in game following a win in same series.

-- Notice that Miami had 54-55 points at halftime in two games; this has to be lower if the Thunder is going to win a road game in this series.

-- Over is now 6-1-1 in last eight Miami games.

Thunder at Heat Game 3: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-4, 193.5)

            Series tied 1-1

THE STORY: The NBA Finals shift to South Beach as the Miami Heat entertain the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 on Sunday night. The Heat escaped with a split if the opening two games in Oklahoma City, fending off the Thunder 100-94 after nearly squandering a 13-point advantage. Miami would like to prevent a return trip to the Midwest, but in order to do so it will need to find a way to stop Thunder superstar Kevin Durant from dominating the fourth quarter.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC, TSN

LINE: Miami opened as low as -3.5 and has been bet up as high as -4.5 at some markets. The total opened at 194 and has come down to 193.5.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Oklahoma City couldn't atone for its early struggles in Game 2, falling behind 18-2 in the first quarter and never quite catching up the rest of the way. "We can't go down that much, especially at home," Durant told reporters afterward. "We've got to correct it." Durant was sensational in defeat, pouring in 32 points, while Russell Westbrook added his second consecutive 27-point effort. Thursday's defeat was the first at home for the Thunder in the postseason, and they now must find a way to earn at least one win in Miami to being the series back to Oklahoma City.

ABOUT THE HEAT: Three quarters of sublime basketball almost wasn't enough for the Heat to earn a series split. "We had played too well in the first 36 minutes to try to let this one slip away from us," said James, who equaled Durant with 32 points in the win. "We just wanted to make one more, two more plays than they made and come out with a victory and we were able to do that." Chris Bosh returned to the starting lineup and was largely effective, pouring in 16 points and adding 15 rebounds - eight on the offensive end. Inside scoring was the key, with Miami outscoring Oklahoma City 46-32 from inside 10 feet.

            TRENDS:

            * Thunder are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings in Miami.
            * Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.
            * Road team is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. Durant has scored a combined 33 points in the fourth quarter of Games 1 and 2.

            2. Oklahoma City has trailed by double digits in each of their last three games.

            3. James' only 30-point performances in Finals games have come in the first two games of this series.

                        MLB

                        Sunday, June 17

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

Ivan Nova, New York Yankees (8-2, 4.64 ERA)

The Yankees righty hasn’t lost since May 19, stringing together four straight victories. Nova has been especially sharp in his last two trips to the bump. He’s given up just one total run on nine hits in his last 15 innings of work.

Zack Greinke, Milwaukee Brewers (7-2, 2.96 ERA)

Greinke has been nearly untouchable over his last three outings. The right-hander is 2-0 in that span, allowing only two earned runs on 17 hits over 20 innings pitched. Greinke was handed a no-decision in his last appearance, giving up one run on six hits through seven innings.

                        Slumping

Brett Cecil, Toronto Blue Jays (0-0, 0.00)

Sure, you can argue that Cecil isn’t technically slumping since he hasn’t pitched in the bigs this season. However, going back to 2011, the Blue Jays southpaw starter has dropped four straight outings and hasn’t won a game since July 29, 2011 - a span of 10 starts. Cecil got the call up from Double-A after two Toronto starters hit the DL this week.

Alex Cobb, Tampa Bay Rays (2-3, 4.70 ERA)

After back-to-back wins to open the season, Cobb has taken three straight losses on the chin. He’s given up at least four runs in those defeats, including getting knocked around for five earned runs on seven hits over 6 2/3 innings against the Mets in his most recent start.

                        MLB

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Red Sox at Cubs
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Red Sox at Chicago Cubs (+112)

Two of the oldest franchises in baseball meet in Wrigley Field on Sunday night as the Cubs host the Red Sox.

                        BOSTON BANGS AND BRUISES

It's been a rough season for the Red Sox with regards to injuries. Josh Beckett will miss his scheduled start Sunday due to shoulder inflammation. Fellow starters John Lackey and Aaron Cook are out.

Joining them on the disabled list are Cody Ross, Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, and Andrew Bailey. That's a lot of salary sitting on the sidelines for Boston, which is nowhere near 100 percent healthy.

                        INTERLEAGUE INTRIGUE

The Red Sox pointed to this series as the break they needed in the midst of a tough stretch of games. However, things did not start well in a 3-0 shutout loss Friday night.

This is still the easiest series the Red Sox have faced recently, facing the likes of Baltimore, Washington and Miami. Boston also has tough series on deck versus Miami, Atlanta, and Toronto in the coming weeks.

The Cubs have also been struggling in interleague play this season, losing series versus Minnesota and Detroit.

                        SLUGFEST EXPECTED?

Franklin Morales will be making his first start since 2009 for Boston Sunday night. The former Rockies arm faced the Cubs back in 2008 at Coors Field, allowing three runs and eight hits in six innings. Morales has spent most of his time in the bullpen this season as the team's long reliever. The lefty is 0-1 with a 3.04 ERA in 23 2/3 innings pitched.

Meanwhile, Paul Maholm is back to his struggling ways for Chicago. He has allowed 10 runs and 20 hits in his last three games, sporting a 5.87 ERA and 1.57 WHIP during that span. He faced the Red Sox last season allowing one run and six hits in 5 1/3 innings. Maholm has allowed four runs or more in four of his last six starts. This came after a stretch where he allowed just three runs total over four starts and 25 1/3 innings.

                        HITTERS TO WATCH

                        Geovany Soto 3-for-3 vs. Morales
                        Starlin Castro 1-for-2 vs. Morales
                        Adrian Gonzalez 3-for-11 vs. Maholm
                        Darnell McDonald 2-for-7 vs. Maholm

                        TRENDS TO WATCH

Boston is 4-10 in its last 14 Sunday games
Boston is 4-1 in its last five interleague road games vs. a left-handed starter
Chicago is 14-32 in its last 46 Sunday games
Chicago is 4-1 in Maholm's last five home starts
