Saturday’s betting tips: Josh Hamilton hospitalized

    Weather to watch

Boston Red Sox at Chicago Cubs – 13 mph winds are expected to blow out to left-centerfield.

Colorado Rockies at Detroit Tigers – 13 mph winds are expected to blow in from centerfield.

    Who’s hot

Euro 2012: Russia/Soviet Union has won nine of its last 11 meetings with Greece.

MLB: Tigers are 7-1 in Doug Fister's last eight home starts.

MLB: Mets are 7-3 in their last 10 home games ahead of Friday's action.

WNBA: Indiana Fever are 15-6 ATS in their last 21 home games.

    Who’s not

Euro 2012: Poland has yet to win a European Championship game in six matches.

MLB: Giants are 1-8 in Tim Lincecum's last nine road starts.

MLB: Marlins are 1-8 in their last nine overall ahead of Friday's action.

WNBA: The over is 4-10 in the L.A. Sparks' last 14 overall.

    Key stat

3 – Greece has managed just three shots on goal in the first halves of their first two games at Euro 2012 and will need to show more going forward early against the high-powered Russian side. Greece has 11 second-half shots on goal.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Tomas Rosicky, Czech Republic – The club’s captain is considered a game-time decision for Saturday’s matchup with Poland as he deals with an Achilles issue.

    Game of the day

    Czech Republic +210, Draw +230, Poland +115

    Notable quotable

"I think we were informed at a team meeting, and there were a lot of groans when it was announced. But we're going to have to deal with it and try not to let it be a distraction. But it's going to be fun for the fans and should be interesting to see, even for some of the players, behind the scenes of the team." – Miami Dolphins tight end Anthony Fasano on XM NFL Radio about the team’s reaction to being on this season’s HBO Hard Knocks reality TV show. The Fins' season win total is set at 7.5.

    Notes and tips

Texas Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton was admitted to a local hospital to treat an intestinal virus on Friday and could be out of the lineup all weekend. Anthony Andro of FOX Sports Southwest reported that the center fielder won’t be released until at least 12-24 hours. He’s hitting .330 with 22 homers and 62 RBI. The Rangers host Houston Saturday.

The Chicago Sky have won six straight games and are 7-1 heading into Saturday’s date with the Indiana Fever. The Sky are 4-2 against the spread during the streak thanks in large part to the duo of Epiphanny Price and Sylvia Fowles. Price leads the league averaging 24.2 points per game while Fowles sits eighth at 18.2 points per game.

The Texas Rangers will send Justin Grimm to the hill Saturday for his first career MLB start at home to the Houston Astros. He was recalled from Double-A Thursday and was 8-3 with a 1.87 ERA in 13 starts for Frisco. He had 67 strikeouts and 14 walks in 77 innings.

      Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Some guy walked on a tightrope over Niagara Falls Friday night, and ABC actually televised it; what would they do if he fell into the falls?

-- Marlins lost 11-0 in St Pete, their 9th loss in 10 games. Hanley Ramirez might have broken his nose after he got hit in batting practice. Terrific.

-- Cardinals scored two or less runs in nine of 14 games this month.

-- In his first 273 PA, Adam Dunn has 23 HRs, 50 walks, 100 strikeouts; he has 18 singles, 10 doubles along with the 23 taters.

-- Derryl Cousins is a bad umpire; its amazing how many times you see a batter bitching about balls/strikes and it turns out Cousins is the ump.

-- Josh Hamilton was hospitalized with some kind of intestinal virus that caused dehydration. We wish him well.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

      13) Baseball’s trading deadline used to be June 15, instead of July 31, like it is now. June 15, 1976 was a sad day; the A’s sold Vida Blue to Bronx, and Rollie Fingers/Joe Rudi to Boston; not good.

Commissioner Bowie Kuhn vetoed the deals “in the best interests of baseball” but those three players missed about a week or so anyway, and when the dust cleared and they were back in Oakland, the A’s were about ten games behind Kansas City in AL West (only four divisions back then).

A’s made a charge in September, but wound up missing the playoffs by a couple games, the amount of ground they lost while the three traded players sat in limbo, not playing.

The point of all that is the trading deadline on June 15 was way too early; even July 31 is a little early. August 31 seems a little better.

      12) If former used car salesman Alan R. Selig had any onions, he would’ve voided the Adrian Gonzalez-to-Boston trade, since the GM of the Padres was obviously padding the roster of his former employer (Red Sox), while getting almost nothing in return. Maybe in the 70’s the commish had more clout than he does now.

      11) Nebraska fired its basketball coach Doc Sadler after LY, its first in the Big Dozen, some say unfairly, since the Cornhuskers are a football school first, second and third, but Sadler has landed on his feet, getting Director of Basketball Operations job at Kansas.

He just went from the bottom of the Big Dozen to a Final Four contender, albeit with a significant slice in pay, but when the Jayhawks win, it’ll open another job opportunity for Sadler, who is a good coach, having won at UTEP before going to Nebraska.

      10) Johan Santana has made two starts since his 134-pitch no-hitter; he’s gone five innings both times (86-96 PT) allowing a total of 13 hits/5 walks and 11 runs. Now both were games with a DH, but still, they’ve got to be at least a little worried about him.

      9) Then there are RA Dickey’s last five starts: two runs allowed in 39.2 IP; with 89 misses on 279 opponent swings (31.9%). Dickey might be the best pitcher in baseball right now. You average 17.8 swing/misses a game for five games, that’s damn good pitching.

      8) When media reports on college coaches getting fired, they need to focus on conference records, not overall record; Virginia Tech was 15-16 LY, which isn’t horrible, but they were 4-12 in the ACC, which is horrible.

Problem for the Hokies is they lost a transfer and two key recruits after Seth Greenberg got fired; they’re down to eight scholarship players for this coming year, with a rookie coach who is more of a recruiter than a tactician. Going to be a long winter in Blacksburg.

      7) A's released Manny Ramirez without ever bringing him up to the major leagues. If you can't be a DH for the A's, its time to retire.

      6) West Coast Conference (Gonzaga/St Mary’s league) will be up to ten teams in 2013-14, when Pacific moves in, so they’re going back to a more traditional 10-team, four-day conference tournament. No more double-byes for the conference leaders.

They haven’t decided if they’re staying at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas or going somewhere else (San Jose? I doubt schools are going to want to have it at Gonzaga or BYU). My advice? When in doubt, always go to Vegas.

      5) College basketball coaches can now call/text recruits as much as they want, which is a quandary; how much is too much? You want the recruit to know you’re very interested, but you also don’t want to annoy the kid or his family. You hear stories about kids get worn out by the process; getting hundreds of texts a day ain’t going to help any.

      4) The 2010 Pirates went 2-13 in interleague play, the worst-ever record in interleague for one season, but Colorado Rockies are 1-9 this year, and all nine losses were at home. They’ll have to go 2-3 the rest of this road trip just to tie the Pirates’ mark, 2-3 to beat it. Good luck there.

      3) Greedy bastard update: Gas is down to $3.71 a gallon at the most expensive station I know of around here, the Mobil station at corner of Fuller/Central in beautiful downtown Colonie. It was as high as $4.09 earlier this year. It is 15-20 cents a gallon lower if you go off the beaten path a little in this area.

      2) I never knew this, maybe because I never watched the show, but when he was a freshman at NYU, Adam Sandler had a recurring role as Smitty in The Cosby Show. 1984 or so.

      1) I never knew that umpires got commemorative baseballs when a pitcher threw a no-hitter in a game they worked. Why?

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

            Streaking

            A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (6-2, 3.61 ERA)

Since allowing 12 runs in 2 2/3 innings back on May 2, Burnett has allowed more than two runs just once in seven starts – all Pittsburgh victories. He took a no-no into the sixth inning in his last outing and ended up allowing two runs on five hits over 7 1/3 innings while striking out six and walking two. That win was the fourth consecutive start that he hasn’t served up a homer.

Ubadlo Jimenez, Cleveland Indians (6-4, 4.91 ERA)

It’s been a tough go for Jimenez for much of this season, but he could finally be coming around. He has allowed just two runs over his last two starts, striking out 11 and walking just one. That’s a huge improvement considering he has 44 strikeouts compared to 43 walks this season. He said his last outing, a seven-inning performance in a 4-1 win over St. Louis, was his best in an Indians jersey.

            Slumping

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels (3-7, 5.74 ERA)

Santana just can’t keep the ball in the ballpark these days. He has allowed six homers in his last four games and has yielded seven earned runs in each of his last two trips to the bump. He was smacked around for 5 2/3 innings last weekend in Colorado but the Angels bailed him out with a 10-8 victory. With Jered Weaver set to rejoin the rotation next week, Santana needs a good outing to solidify his spot.

            Philip Humber, Chicago White Sox

Two months after chucking a perfect game, Humber is in danger of being demoted to the bullpen. He has just one win in nine starts since hitting the record books, owning a fat 7.50 ERA. Humber has allowed 10 runs and five dingers over his last two outings, spanning 10 1/3 innings.

Thunder at Heat Game 3: What bettors need to know
                            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oklahoma City Thunder at Miami Heat (-4, 193.5)

                            Series tied 1-1

THE STORY: The NBA Finals shift to South Beach as the Miami Heat entertain the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 3 on Sunday night. The Heat escaped with a split if the opening two games in Oklahoma City, fending off the Thunder 100-94 after nearly squandering a 13-point advantage. Miami would like to prevent a return trip to the Midwest, but in order to do so it will need to find a way to stop Thunder superstar Kevin Durant from dominating the fourth quarter.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ABC, TSN

LINE: Miami opened as low as -3.5 and has been bet up as high as -4.5 at some markets. The total opened at 194 and has come down to 193.5.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Oklahoma City couldn't atone for its early struggles in Game 2, falling behind 18-2 in the first quarter and never quite catching up the rest of the way. "We can't go down that much, especially at home," Durant told reporters afterward. "We've got to correct it." Durant was sensational in defeat, pouring in 32 points, while Russell Westbrook added his second consecutive 27-point effort. Thursday's defeat was the first at home for the Thunder in the postseason, and they now must find a way to earn at least one win in Miami to being the series back to Oklahoma City.

ABOUT THE HEAT: Three quarters of sublime basketball almost wasn't enough for the Heat to earn a series split. "We had played too well in the first 36 minutes to try to let this one slip away from us," said James, who equaled Durant with 32 points in the win. "We just wanted to make one more, two more plays than they made and come out with a victory and we were able to do that." Chris Bosh returned to the starting lineup and was largely effective, pouring in 16 points and adding 15 rebounds - eight on the offensive end. Inside scoring was the key, with Miami outscoring Oklahoma City 46-32 from inside 10 feet.

                            TRENDS:

                            * Thunder are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings in Miami.
                            * Under is 3-1-1 in the last five meetings.
                            * Road team is 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

                            BUZZER BEATERS:

                            1. Durant has scored a combined 33 points in the fourth quarter of Games 1 and 2.

                            2. Oklahoma City has trailed by double digits in each of their last three games.

                            3. James' only 30-point performances in Finals games have come in the first two games of this series.

NASCAR betting: Quicken Loans 400 preview and odds

For the second week in a row the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series heads into somewhat unfamiliar territory with Sunday’s Quicken Loans 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

This week marks the second straight track that the series will visit that has undergone a recent repaving. Teams got a sneak peek with a testing session at the two-mile oval near Detroit in April and speeds were reportedly nearing 215 miles per hour.

While it certainly will be fast when the green flag falls Sunday, there are still some big question marks. Detroit is, of course, home to the large automakers and this week the three favorites just happen to represent three different makes: Toyota, Chevy and Ford.

Denny Hamlin, driving a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, has won the last two June races here and after staging a heroic comeback last week at Pocono, he rallied back from a lap down to finish fifth. That fifth-place finish was his fifth Top-5 showing in his last seven races. The streak started with his second win of the season at Kansas. Hamlin has shown he has the strength to get the job done and add a third win to his Michigan resume. Hamlin is fourth in points and has one less thing to worry about. He can focus on wins as the Chase is approaching faster and faster each week.

“We've kind of gotten into the part of the season where you see the same kind of top-five guys or top-10 guys week in and week out,” Hamlin told reporters.”You definitely will see a shuffle these next few weeks as far as that's concerned just because there's so many unknowns these next three weeks. I'm happy we're in the position we are and we don't have to make up points these next three weeks and we can focus on trying to go out and get race wins. If I was 10th to 12th with no race wins, I'd say these next three weeks would be stressful for those guys."
