Friday’s betting tips: England shuffles lineup to attack Sweden

    Weather to watch

Ukraine vs. France: Temperatures are expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius (91 Farenheit).

    Who’s hot

Euro 2012: France is unbeaten in its last 22 games.

MLB: San Francisco has won 12 of its last 14 overall and 10 of its last 14 interleague games.

WNBA: The Minnesota Lynx can set a WNBA record by winning their 10th straight game to start a season Friday. They’ve opened the year 6-3 against the
    spread.

    Who’s not

Euro 2012: Ukraine is 0-3-3 in its six matches with France.

MLB: The Colorado Rockies have lost seven straight and 13 of their last 16 in interleague play.

WNBA: The Washington Mystics are 5-11 ATS in their last 16 games overall.

    Key stat

1 – The Seattle Storm visit the winless Tulsa Shock with just one win on the year themselves. The Storm have dropped eight of their last 10 games against the spread and own the league’s worst scoring offense, averaging only 64.9 points per contest. Seattle is set as a 2-point road underdog.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Adam LaRoche, Washington Nationals – LaRoche fouled a ball off his foot Tuesday and didn’t play Wednesday. After Thursday’s off day, the Nats are hoping he can return to the lineup, but his status is still questionable. He’s hitting .261 with 11 homers and 42 RBI.

    Game of the day

    Ukraine (+250) vs. France (+100) Draw (+215)

    Notable quotable

"I did not call my players cowards. [But] we were playing a little cautious, we didn't show the aggression I wanted to see. I think some of the players were nervous in the first half, but we played a good game in the second half." –Sweden coach Erik Hamren, disputing reports that he called his players “cowards” following the club’s loss to Ukraine. Sweden is set as a +240 underdog to England (+100). The draw is priced at +225.

    Notes and tips

England will reportedly start 6-foot-3 striker Andy Carroll alongside Danny Welbeck Friday. Considering nine of the last 11 goals Sweden has conceded (including Andriy Shevchenko’s pair for Ukraine in the opener), it might be a good idea. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will begin the game on the bench to make room for Carroll, while Ashley Cole will start wide on the left.

The Seattle Mariners made some big changes to their lineup and sent struggling starter Blake Beavan and troubled third baseman Alex Liddi to Class AAA Tacoma. At the same time, the Mariners put right-handed reliever Stephen Pryor and left fielder Mike Carp on the disabled list. New to the roster are two positions players, outfielders Casper Wells and Franklin Gutierrez, and two right-handed pitchers, Erasmo Ramirez and Steve Delabar.

The Bobcats could be looking to trade the No. 2 overall pick in the June 28 draft. There is a workout set for two of the top candidates for that pick, Florida's Bradley Beal and North Carolina's Harrison Barnes, either of whom would be considered an upgrade in the backcourt for different reasons. It's thought the Bobcats could either trade down to get multiple picks or even trade out of the first round, as they did in 2007.

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Carlos Beltran went to the emergency room Wednesday night for what manager Mike Matheny called stomach virus. He wasn’t expected to play Thursday and his status for Friday’s game is questionable. Beltran is hitting .298 with 19 homers and 47 RBI.

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Over the last two baseball seasons, lowest ERAs in the major leagues, counting only pitchers who have made 30+ starts:
      Cueto 2.36, Kershaw 2.38 and Weaver 2.45.

-- House and CSI: Miami got cancelled the same year? What the hell's going on out there?!?!?!?

-- Arizona Cardinals' QB Kevin Kolb got booed this week....at the team's fan fest. This never happened to him in Philadelphia.

-- Justin Verlander has now lasted 6+ innings in his last 56 starts.

-- I'd like to see ESPN use retired referee Steve Javie in-game, the way the FOX people use Mike Pereira during NFL games, to explain calls.

-- Last time Shane Battier scored 17+ points in consecutive games was back in January........of 2007.

      ************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here......

      13) Quite a weekend coming up; US Open golf, Game 3 of the NBA Finals Sunday night, College World Series, more interleague play and even some CFL preseason games (just seeing if you're paying attention). Have fun!!!

      12) ESPN's headline of their US Open story: Tiger steals show at Open. He is three shots behind an obscure pro named Michael Thompson, but guess that isn't a good enough story for ESPN. Makes you want to root against the guy (Woods), even though he's not the one writing the headlines.

      11) Who is Michael Thompson? Not Mychal Thompson, the old Laker and dad of current Warrior Klay Thompson, but Michael Thompson, who went to Alabama and has made 28 cuts in 46 pro tourneys. He is ranked 105th on the money list this season. He has three career top 10's.

      10) Speaking of which, golf people never talk about the money list on TV anymore, its this stupid FedEx points thing that is like NASCAR and isn't understood very well. I understand who makes how much money, its fairly simple. "Keep it simple, stupid" is usually good advice in life.

      9) You watch Russell Westbrook finish a layup in transition with his left hand over Lebron James, and you realize how hard you have to work to become a great player. I sound old-fashioned when I say this, but its true; kids should play less games in the summer, work on improving their skills more. Its the quickest way to get a lot better.

Be ambidextrous around the basket; have a great handle with either hand; make your lower body stronger, to increase range on your shot and to make it easier to absorb contact during games. Be a great free throw shooter. All these things can be done on your own. Enough preaching......

      8) Had to go to Apple Store on Thursday to fix a problem with my g-mail account; what a great operation they have. Lot of workers, very helpful, and not condescending to us older folks who aren't as technology-savvy as we might like to be. If someone doesn't know the answer to a question, they go ask someone who does know. Wasn't in there long at all.

      7) If you have DirecTV, I highly recommend channel 851 for background music while writing late at night, if you know anyone who does stuff like that. Smooth jazz without commercials, excellent.

      6) So the Charlotte Bobcats' job comes down to Jerry Sloan, Quin Snyder and Brian Shaw; Sloan apparently has taken himself out of the running; do you really think Michael Jordan would hire a Duke guy over a former NBA player (Shaw) who got hosed by the Lakers during the lockout last year?

If he hires Snyder over Sloan, Jordan should be impeached as the decision-maker for the Bobcats. Shaw has been part of the Lakers' run of greatness, so he merits an oppurtunity, at least.

      5) Mets have lot of nerve appealing RA Dickey's one-hitter; Johan Santana got his no-hitter as the direct result of a horrible call by Adrian Johnson on a clear double by Carlos Beltran (ball hit the chalk right in front of Johnson, who somehow didn't notice that). Things even out, even if the scoring call in Tampa was wrong. Was it? BJ Upton is pretty fast, after all.

      4) If you're involved with a fantasy team, you should check out columns on espn.com written by Matthew Berry; he's got a lot of good info.

      3) This is what coaches in the NBA think of officiating in their league; with 10:40 or so to go Thursday, Kevin Durant got his 5th foul, At home. Did he go sit down for a few minutes? Hell no. Coaches know their star ain't getting his 6th foul unless he commits a felony. NBA officiating ain't good.

      2) Thoroughly enjoyed what I saw of the LA Kings' celebration on the NHL Network Thursday; is it me, or do hockey players seem to cherish winning more than guys in other sports? Maybe because of the Stanley Cup's being so popular, their celebrations are more public. Not sure on that one.

      1) Since 2004, Miami Heat are now 15-3 when Dan Crawford referees one of their games; in the game they needed most this season, Game 2, he was on the game, assigned by the league. As they said in A Few Good Men, "....those are the facts, they are not in dispute...."

Public opinion: Bettors fading struggling Rockies

        MLB:

Colorado Rockies at Detroit Tigers (-145, 9.5)

The Rockies stumble into Beantown having lost seven straight and now send out Jeff Francis to the mound after he was destroyed in his reunion with the club. He gave up 10 hits and eight earned runs in 3 1/3 innings during his only MLB start of the season.

        Consensus: Tigers, 66 percent

        WNBA:

Indiana Fever at Washington Mystics (5.5, 149)

Washington is just 1-5 straight up this season and is averaging only 69.5 points per game. While Indiana is coming off consecutive upset losses the Fever can fill it up, averaging 82.8 points per contest.

        Consensus: Fever, 64 percent

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Chris Sale, Chicago White Sox (8-2, 2.05 ERA)

The 6-foot-6 lefty is garnering comparisons to Randy Johnson and you can see why looking at his track record over the last month. He is 5-0 with a 0.98 ERA over his last five outings and has struck out seven batters in all but one of those starts. Sale also leads the AL in ERA and batting average allowed (.188) and has earned his supporters 4.47 units this year.

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (2-3, 2.31 ERA)

Since the Cubs bailed him out for once in a no-decision against the Padres at the end of last month, Dempster has been repaying the favor. He hasn’t allowed a run since, going 2-0 with nine strikeouts and one walk over 15 innings of work. The Cubs are averaging 8.7 runs in his last three, up from 4.0 runs on the year.

                    Slumping

Anthony Bass, San Diego Padres (2-6, 4.38 ERA)

Bass owned a 2.94 ERA over his first eight starts of the season, but has allowed 19 runs over his last four outings, failing to pitch through the sixth inning in any of those. Getting out of jams is Bass’ big bugaboo with most of the problems coming after the fifth inning. San Diego pitching coach Darren Balsley recently said mechanics aren’t to blame.

Bronson Arroyo, Cincinnati Reds (2-4, 3.79 ERA)

Arroyo ran into some more bad fortune in his last start that saw him allow just two runs over seven innings in a 3-2 loss to Detroit. Both of those runs came from solo homers and he’s allowed three dingers in his last two outings. The Reds have dropped four of his last five starts.
