Tuesday’s betting tips: Greece shorthanded vs. Czechs

    Weather to watch

Cleveland Indians at Cincinnati Reds - 13 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Thunder are 5-0 ATS in their last five games as a favorite.

Euro 2012: Poland is 4-0-2 in its last six official international matches.

MLB: Nationals are 11-5 in their last 16 road games.

MLB: Diamondbacks are 5-0 in their last five overall.

    Who’s not

NBA: Heat are 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven games as an underdog.

Euro 2012: Greece is 1-5-1 in six matches against the Czech Republic.

MLB: Tigers are 1-10 in their last 11 games vs. a left-handed starter.

MLB: Royals are 8-21 in their last 29 home games.

    Key stat

0 – Miami Heat superstar LeBron James has never scored 30 points in an NBA Finals game and averages just 19.5 points in 10 Finals games so far in his career. He heads into Game 1 in Oklahoma City leading the playoffs in scoring, averaging 30.8 points per contest.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Yoenis Cespedes, Oakland Athletics – Cespedes has been out of action since straining his left hamstring last Thursday and is considered questionable for Tuesday’s game against Colorado. Cespedes is hitting .275 with six homers and 26 RBI in 35 games this season.

    Game of the day

Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, -5, 194.5)

    Notable quotable

"People ask me about this team's identity. You want to know who we are? We play one-run games. That's who we are." – Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle. The Pirates have played 27 one-run games in their first 59 and are 17-10 in those contests. Pittsburgh sits third in MLB money standings having earned its supporters 11.11 units.

    Notes and tips

It looks as though Greece might be quite shorthanded for Tuesday’s match against the Czech Republic. With Avraam Papadopoulos already ruled out due to injury and Sokratis Papastathopoulos set to serve his suspension, Goal.com reported Monday evening that midfielder Georgios Fotaki is also out with a thigh injury he suffered during Sunday’s training. He was scheduled to start in midfield, moving Kostas Katsouranis to central defense. Greece is set at +190 with the draw at +205. The Czech Republic is priced at +125.

To follow up on Ashton Grewal’s story, the title bout decision that gave Timothy Bradley an upset victory by judges' decision over welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao won't be subject to review by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that the split decision is expected to stand, and Bradley will remain the undisputed WBO welterweight champ. Bradley won five of the last six rounds on the scorecards of judges Duane Ford and C.J. Ross but independent statistics services scored the match in Pacquiao's favor. Fight statistics showed Bradley landed 159 of his punches; Pacquiao landed 253 punches.

The Oakland A's are going with a closer by committee system. Grant Balfour could not hang onto the full-time closer's role, and neither could Brian Fuentes, and after Fuentes allowed a walkoff homer on Friday for the second time in four appearances, manager Bob Melvin decided to go with a group effort. Rookie Ryan Cook, the A's most reliable reliever all season, will join the mix, along with Fuentes and Balfour, and Melvin said he will factor in availability and matchups.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Braves are now 0-9 on Mondays; they’re 34-18 the other six days.

-- Memphis signed 5-11 Sam Craft, a QB who will also play basketball for the Tigers; Cincinnati, Auburn,Tennessee were after him for hoops.

-- Team that scored first won the last 18 Stanley Cup Finals games.

-- Big East is suing TCU for $5M; Horned Frogs never played a game in the league. Lawyers billing lot of hours on this garbage.

-- Mike Emrick is the best announcer in any sport; he's going to be on the water polo games in the Olympics. I'll probably watch one or two.

-- Kid named Ben Dickinson transferred from Binghamton to LMU, one of the great weather upgrades in basketball transfer history; on the other side of the ledger is Hector Harold, who transferred from Pepperdine to Vermont. Hope he has a nice big parka.

      ***************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud..........

      13) I’d like to be a fly on the wall next winter, when ESPN’s Fran Fraschilla works a Baylor game; Fraschilla threw Baylor coach Scott Drew under the bus bigtime at the NBA Draft Combine, saying “……lets face it, he’s (Perry Jones III) never had any…..coaching.”

He then tried to shift it to Jones’ high school and AAU coaches, but it was obvious what he thinks of Drew, especially after the panel shredded the skills of another Baylor player, Quincy Miller, later on in the show.

      12) Iowa State’s Royce White is a top 10 draft talent, but he has an anxiety issue regarding getting on airplanes, which isn’t good for an NBA player. He also had some off-court problems while at Minnesota that might be difficult to explain away.

      11) Going to be a busy summer for the Celtics, who right now have only four players under contract for next season.

      10) Teams that win in the NBA find talent where other teams don’t; Manu Ginobili was the 57th player taken in his draft. Kenneth Faried was picked 22nd LY, hurt by his small-school background at Morehead State, but he helped the Nuggets a lot this season.

      9) US Olympic basketball team has an exhibition game against Dominican Republic National team at UNLV on July 12, my first night in Las Vegas next month. Cheapest ticket in the lower bowl is $48; upper-level seats range from $13-23.

Isn’t John Calipari the coach of the DR national team? This could be interesting, especially with no baseball being played that night.

      8) Baltimore Orioles have now won their last nine extra-inning games.

      7) When Ryan Dempster struck Joe Mauer out three times Sunday, he became just second pitcher to do so, joining CC Sabathia (as an Indian).

      6) Chad Billingsley has trailed 1-0 (given up the first run) in 12 of his 14 starts this season, the worst-such record of any pitcher in baseball.

      5) Josh Holliday (Matt’s brother) was recently named head baseball coach at Oklahoma State, replacing Frank Anderson (father of A’s pitcher Brett Anderson) who had replaced Tom Holliday (Matt’s father) as Cowboys’ coach. Got it?

Matt Holliday and Brett Anderson were teammates for half a season in Oakland in 2009.

      4) When San Diego sent pitcher Andrew Cashner to AA Mobile Sunday, it wasn’t a demotion; he’s switching from relieving to starting, so he needs 2-3 starts in the minors to gradually increase his pitch count.

Former Pirate starter Ross Ohlendorf will take Cashner’s spot in the rotation until he gets back.

      3) Florida State spent $525,000 on football recruiting LY; that seems excessive, but recruiting is the lifeline of any successful program. The use of private planes (over $200,000 LY) inflates the recruiting expense.

If you don’t get excellent players, you don’t win, then donors don’t donate as much, so spending a lot on recruiting is a solid investment that pays off down the road. Its the most justifiable expense.

      2) Umpire Brian Runge has worked the plate twice in Seattle this season; both games were no-hitters, the Mariners’ combined no-hitter Friday, and Philip Humber’s perfect game in April.

      1) I became a Ram fan when I was six years old; they won the Super Bowl a month after my 40th birthday, so I know how LA Kings fans feel today, as their team finally sits atop the hockey world. Congrats to all of you.

I saw a couple Kings games in the LA Forum in the late 80's, against the old Hartford Whalers and the St Louis Blues. Saw Jimmy Carson's first career hat trick; thing that stood out was how young the fanbase was back then. Fans who have given years of loyalty got their payoff last night. Enjoy.

Public opinion: Bettors like Thunder to draw first blood

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 9 p.m. ET, Monday.

        NBA:

Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, 194.5)

The Oklahoma City Thunder head into the first game of this series having covered in seven of their last eight postseason games, so it’s no surprise bettors are leaning their way. The Thunder were just 17-16 against the spread at home this season but have covered four straight on their home floor.

        Consensus: Thunder, 63.8 percent

        MLB:

Detroit Tigers at Chicago Cubs (+110, N/A)

The Chicago Cubs have won just one of their last six interleague games and two of their last 10 overall. Meanwhile, the Tigers have won three of their last four, though starter Max Scherzer has struggled lately. He’s allowed seven homers in his last four starts.

        Consensus: Tigers, 69 percent

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, June 12

-- Home side won both meetings this year; Thunder (-1.5) won 103-87 on March 25, Miami (-3) won 98-93 at home 11 nights later.

-- Heat has won a title, although James hasn't, having lost in Finals two times. This is first time in Finals for these Thunder (old Sonics); there is popular wisdom that the first time in the Finals can be tough.

-- This is where old hand Derek Fisher comes in; he's won five rings, so his mentoring of the young Oklahoma City players is a key here.

-- Oklahoma City is deeper, but Miami has the best player.

-- Miami just won a tough 7-game series; Thunder won their series in six games, polishing off a Spurs team that had won 20 games in a row. They also knocked off defending champ Mavs and perennial power Lakers.

-- Heat beat New York-Indiana-Boston; they're just 4-4 on road so far in playoffs. This will be their first series without the home court edge.

-- Oklahoma City is 8-0 at home in playoffs (5-3 vs spread); to me, the key for them is Westbrook being a facilitator and making sure Durant has the ball in key spots.

I'm not a big fan of Miami's subs; Harden's contributions off the bench are something the Heat doesn't have. I'll take the Thunder in 7.

Heat at Thunder Game 1: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Miami Heat at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, 194.5)

          THE STORY:
With this year's conference finals featuring showdowns between young up-and-comers and grizzled veterans, youth prevailed both times. That should make the 2012 NBA finals between the Miami Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder one of the most fast-paced matchups in recent memory. The two superstar-laden teams begin the championship Tuesday night in Oklahoma City. The Thunder reached the finals with a six-game win over San Antonio. Miami ousted the Boston Celtics in seven.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, ABC, TSN

ABOUT THE HEAT: Miami is playing in its second straight Finals and is led by mega-star LeBron James, who willed his team to victory with sensational performances in Games 6 and 7 against the Celtics. James scored 76 points and hauled in 27 rebounds over the final two games of the series after Miami found itself on the verge of a shocking upset at the hands of the Celtics. James will be accompanied by fellow star Dwyane Wade and a suddenly healthy Chris Bosh, whose low-post presence will make life difficult for the Thunder front court combo of Kendrick Perkins and Serge Ibaka. Miami's big weakness is its reserve corps, which will be in tough to match the productivity of its Oklahoma City counterpart.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: So much for San Antonio's air of invincibility. Going into the third game of the West finals, the Spurs had won 20 straight games and looked virtually unstoppable. Four games later, it was the Thunder who were celebrating after reeling off four straight wins over a shell-shocked Spurs squad. Three-time NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant and electric point guard Russell Westbrook lead the way for Oklahoma City, while star sixth man James Harden provides instant scoring off the bench. Add in a reliable post presence in Perkins and one of the league's elite shot blockers in Ibaka, and it's clear the Thunder are full value for their first NBA finals appearance since relocating from Seattle.

          TRENDS:

          - Heat are 0-6-1 ATS in their last seven games as an underdog.
          - Over is 6-2 in Thunder's last eight home games.
          - Underdog is 9-4 ATS in the last 13 meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. The teams split a pair of regular-season meetings, with the home team prevailing each time.

          2. The matchup features each of the last five scoring champions in Durant (2010-12), Wade (2009) and James (2008).

          3. James, Wade and Bosh scored all 28 Miami points in the pivotal fourth quarter of Game 7 against Boston - Miami's first victory in a seventh game since 2004, Wade's rookie season.

              Tuesday, June 12

AL teams were 2-2 Monday, they're 48-40 against NL teams in interleague play this season.
Remember there are DHs in games in American League parks, no DHs in National League parks. It doesn't seem to affect totals either way.

              Hot pitchers

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Ian Kennedy, Arizona Diamondbacks (5-5, 3.93)

Kennedy matched a career-high with 12 strikeouts in six innings to help Arizona pound Colorado 10-0 last week. After suffering through a five-start losing streak, the California native has won consecutive starts, giving up just one run in 13 2/3 innings. Kennedy has walked just 19 batters in 75 2/3 innings over 12 starts.

Clay Buchholz, Boston Red Sox (6-2, 5.77 ERA)

A minor change to the grip of his change-up has Buchholz baffling hitters again. He has 19 strikeouts since he made the change three starts ago, yielding just four earned runs over that span. Walks have been Buchholz’s major problem (31 in 73 1/3 innings), but he has issued only four free passes to first in his last three.

                  Slumping

Paul Maholm, Chicago Cubs (4-5, 5.10 ERA)

Chicago has dropped five consecutive Maholm starts and the lefty is coming off a 8-0 loss at Milwaukee that saw him go just four innings, allowing four runs on six hits. He hasn’t had a quality start since May 9 and has struck out just 36 batters compared to 20 walks this year. The Cubs are averaging only 1.7 runs in his last three outings.

Bud Norris, Houston Astros (5-3, 4.65 ERA)

After winning four in a row, the Astros have lost each of Norris’ last three turns in the rotation. He gave up nine runs in just 1 2/3 innings at Colorado at the end of May and then served up a pair of homers and four earned runs in a 4-3 loss to St. Louis in his last time out. The good news was that he struck out a season-high 12 batters against the Cards.
