Sunday's betting tips: Ireland riding 14-game unbeaten streak

    Weather to watch

Chicago Cubs at Minnesota Twins – A 21-mph wind will be blowing in from right. Temperatures will be in the mid- to high-80s, with a 30 percent chance of isolated thunderstorms.

    Who’s hot

MLB: The home team is 5-0 in umpire CB Bucknor’s last five interleague games behind the plate. He’s calling Oakland-Arizona on Sunday.

MLB: The over is 15-5-2 in Ricky Romero’s last 22 starts for Toronto.

Euro 2012: Spain has won 41 of its last 45 competitive games entering Sunday’s match vs. Italy.

Euro 2012: Ireland enters Sunday’s tournament opener vs. Croatia on a 14-match unbeaten streak.

WNBA: Connecticut is 4-1 ATS in its last five games vs. the Eastern Conference.

    Who’s not

MLB: The Cubs are 5-14 in Ryan Dempster’s last 19 starts on grass.

MLB: The Phillies are 3-7 in Cliff Lee’s last 10 starts.

Euro 2012: Italy has won only two of its last nine games in this tournament, drawing five and losing the other two.

WNBA: Chicago is 2-5-1 ATS in its last eight games vs. New York.

    Key stat

9 – That’s how many goals Croatia scored on headers in Euro 2012 qualification, most of any team. Sunday’s opponent, Ireland, scored 10 goals on set pieces. Ireland is set at +250 to win, Croatia at +120, and the draw at +210.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Braves starter Tim Hudson was scratched from Sunday’s start with bone chips in his left ankle, and Julio Teheran was called up to face the Blue Jays. In 11 starts at Triple-A Gwinnett, Teheran is 5-2 with a 3.15 ERA. Hudson received a cortisone shot in his ankle Friday; team officials hope he’ll be able to pitch Wednesday against the Yankees.

    Game of the day

    Euro 2012

Spain vs. Italy, 12 p.m. ET

    Spain (-133), Italy (+400), Draw (+250)

    Notable quotable

"We have an aim that no one has ever achieved before and that is beautiful. We do have a lot of pressure because there is a lot of optimism that surrounds us. But we are accustomed to the pressure because we are defending the title and we are world champions. However, we cannot think that we are out of this world and we are going to win. It would be a huge mistake to have that attitude." – Spain coach Vincente Del Bosque, whose squad is trying to become the first in history to win three straight tournaments of this caliber (Euro, World Cup, Euro).

    Notes and tips

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner is having renewed soreness in his injured right elbow and is now expected to be out through the All-Star Break. New York had hoped to have him back this week. Gardner is hitting .321 but has only played in nine games this season.

Braves third baseman Chipper Jones (bruised calf) could be back in the lineup Sunday but is more likely to return Monday against the Yankees. The 40-year-old is hitting .307 with five homers and 24 RBIs in 29 games.

White Sox outfielder Dayan Viciedo missed Saturday’s game after leaving Friday’s game with tightness in both hamstrings. In his place, Jordan Danks got his first MLB start in left field. Viciedo, who’s hitting .267 with 12 homers and 29 RBIs in 54 games, is considered day-to-day.

      Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

-- 85,811 people showed up at Belmont Saturday, so figure scratching of I'll Have Another cost them 34,000 or so fans.

-- If you need to know whether the roof at Miller Park is going to be open or shut on any given day, call 1-800-774-8587. The Roof Hotline.

-- Giants haven't homered in last 15 home games, longest streak in majors since the Astros in 1990.

-- Devils are first NHL team since 1945 to be down 3-0 in Finals and then force a Game 6, which is Monday at Staples Center.

-- Angels were 6-14 when they brought up Mike Trout; they're 25-15 since then. Trout is at least as good as Bryce Harper. They're both 19.

-- A's are headed to another cruddy season, but at least the AAA team in Sacramento is strong; 40-23. Thats just great. Oh yeah, and they made a movie about when we were good ten years ago. Even better.

      ************

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.........

      13) Miami-Oklahoma City figures to be an excellent NBA Final; Heat got a huge boost in last two games from return of Chris Bosh. His contributions were really a difference-maker in a very tough series. Oklahoma City will be a more rested team, and they have the home court edge.

      12) Will be tons of pressure on the LA Kings at home Monday night, when they host Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals, with a chance to win their first Stanley Cup. Last time a team was down 3-0 in Cup Fianls and won was all the way back in 1942, when the Toronto Maple Leafs did it.

      11) Pretty cool that the tee markers at the Memphis Open are tiny FedEx trucks, since FedEx is the biggest sponsor the PGA Tour has.

      10) Imagine companies that bought advertising time on NBC for the horse racing Saturday, with advertising rates befitting a possible Triple Crown winner? Monday morning, someone will have some 'splainin' to do

      9) Sports Illustrated's Tim Layden points out that I'll Have Another has retired after six career races; back in 1948, when Citation won the Triple Crown at the Belmont in June, he still ran nine more races, just that year.

      8) Adam Jones has now homered in the 12th, 15th, 17th innings this year, as the Orioles handed Philly their sixth walk-off loss this year. Some Phils' fans are frustrated because Jonathan Papelbon hasn't pitched in any of the six walk-off losses. Generally, you hold your closer back on the road, so he can close the game if/when you get the lead. At least thats the plan.

      7) Orioles are now 25-9 when they score 4+ runs, 8-17 when they do not.

      6) Kent State DH Nick Hamilton is hitting .361 for the Golden Flashes; he is the son of Tom Hamilton, radio voice of the Cleveland Indians.

      5) 39,312 fans showed up at PNC Park to see the Pirates beat Kansas City 5-3 for their 11th win in last 14 games.

      4) Stony Brook beat LSU 3-1 Saturday behind a kid named Tyler Johnson, who threw 127 pitches in the win, five days after he threw 119 pitches in a win over Central Florida, which was three days after he threw 110 pitches in a win over Miami. Thats 356 pitches in nine days, which explains why pro teams coddle their pitches a little, to make up for the abuse they take in the college ranks. No pro pitcher throws that much in nine days. None.

      3) Out of curiosity, I looked to see who drafted this Johnson kid, who is a damn good pitcher if he beat both Miami/LSU with a start in between; as it turns out, my A's drafted him, so now I'm annoyed this coach is overusing his best pitcher, risking an arm injury. Lot of that in college baseball.

      2) They've moved the Cal-Stanford football rivalry to late October, away from the traditional late November date. Probably because teams didn't like having a rivalry game so close to the Pac-12 title game.

      1) Rough week for the Marlins, who are 0-5, losing by a combined score of 39-8; luckily for the Fish, no one in Miami will notice for a while, with the Heat in the NBA Finals and all.

        MLB:

Los Angeles Dodgers at Seattle Mariners (105, 8)

Dodgers starter Chad Billingsley has a 3.50 ERA over his last three starts, half of the 7.00 ERA Seattle starter Blake Beavan has posted in that span. Beavan has served up 11 homers in 11 starts, and he's gone five straight outings without a producing a quality start. Los Angeles is 6-2 in Billingsley's last eight starts with four days of rest.

        Consensus: Dodgers, 68 percent

Chicago Sky at New York Liberty (-1.5, 145.5)

Bettors are jumping on the Liberty, who have won three straight after an 0-5 start. Cappie Pondexter is averaging 25.3 points and Leilani Mitchell has hit 11 of 18 3-pointers during the win streak. New York is coming off a 76-70 win in Washington on Friday, while Chicago needed overtime to get past winless Tulsa. Consenus: Liberty, 65 percent

NASCAR betting: Pocono 400 preview and picks

The summer stretch for NASCAR begins in earnest this week as the Sprint Cup Series heads to Pocono Raceway for Sunday’s Pocono 400 presented by #NASCAR.

Pocono is a 2.5-mile track unique to any other on the schedule with three distinctly different turns and three straightaways of varying lengths and top speeds.

Sunday, however, there are new challenges to deal with. Pocono’s surface has received a new coat of asphalt - the first since 1995. And for the first time in the track’s history, neither 2012 race will be a 500-miler. Instead, both have been shortened to 400 miles.

The track is holding an open test this week to get ready for Sunday’s race on the new surface and Goodyear Tire engineers expect speeds to be higher than years past.

This week’s favorite is again Jimmie Johnson. The Covers favorite last week delivered, scoring a dominating win at Dover. Now that the fuse seems lit, Johnson is ready to go to the front again Sunday.

Johnson said the repaving shouldn’t be a radical departure from the past because the same kinds of materials were used in both old and new asphalt.

“Normally, it’s an edgy race track regardless of the tire that you come with on a new repave,” said Johnson, whose two Pocono victories came in 2004. “It sounds like we didn’t have that (during the test) and Pocono made sure they used the same mix, the same asphalt that we were racing on.”

“I would imagine that it’s going to be super smooth and really fast,” he added.

Jeff Gordon needs to turn his luck around and Pocono might be the place he does just that. Johnson’s Hendrick Motorsports teammate has shown moments of competitive fire this season, but has run into terrible luck.

However, Gordon is the defending winner of this race and finished sixth in the August event. He leads all active drivers here with five wins and if Gordon hopes to turn around his season and get back to Victory Lane, Sunday could be his best chance. Wednesday Gordon was one of the first drivers to hit the newly repaved track.

“They did a great job; (the) track was really nice and smooth (with) good grip,” said Gordon. “We have had some repaves where it is a handful and pretty slick. That was not the case at all today.”

Kyle Busch has never won here, but with second and third-place showings here last season, he will look to rebound after being sidelined by mechanical issues last Sunday. With the kind of strong season he’s having, Busch could spoil the Hendrick party and score his first career win at Pocono Sunday.

Johnson was third fastest during the first test session Wednesday, Busch was ninth and Gordon eleventh.

          Head–to-head

Denny Hamlin vs. Greg Biffle: Both drivers are recent winners at Pocono. Biffle won in August of 2010, while Hamlin swept both races in August 2009 and June 2010. Hamlin also swept the races in 2006, giving him four wins overall. He also has the highest driver rating among all active drivers. You might think that would give him the edge to take it all, but in the last few races here, Hamlin has struggled while Biffle comes into Pocono wanting to protect his points lead. Look for Biffle to prevail in this matchup.

Tony Stewart vs. Brad Keselowski: Stewart has two wins here, the last coming in July 2009. Keselowski scored his lone Pocono victory the last time the series visited here in August. Both have struggled at times the season, but Stewart has been able to put together more solid finishes. Look for Smoke to come out ahead of Keselowski Sunday.

          Bottom Line

Thirteen of the 68 races have been won from the pole, Bill Elliott (1985, 2002) and Denny Hamlin (2006 sweep) are the only drivers to have done it twice. Tony Stewart is the most recent driver to win from the pole in 2009. Forty-seven of the 68 Pocono races have been won from a Top-10 starting position. The June 2005 race was won by Carl Edwards from the 29th starting position - the deepest in the field that a race winner has started.

          Picks

          Jimmie Johnson (+484)
          Jeff Gordon (+825)
          Kyle Busch (+950)

Sunday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees (3-2, 2.78 ERA)

The 39-year-old lefty has allowed two or fewer runs in three of his past four starts after fanning 10 in 7 1/3 scoreless innings against the Rays last time out. His two-seam fastball was especially effective. "I found something with it in the bullpen and [pitching coach] Larry [Rothschild] and I talked about it," Pettitte said. "I wasn't using it much this year.” He’s 8-5 with a 3.69 ERA in 19 career starts against the Mets.

                    A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (5-2, 3.76 ERA)

Pittsburgh has won Burnett’s last six starts, including two straight over the potent Reds. He’s allowed a total of five runs over his last four starts, and has struck out 50 batters in 55 innings this year. In 10 career starts against the Royals, Burnett is 4-3 with a 2.71 ERA.

                    Slumping

Ervin Santana, Los Angeles Angels (2-7, 5.33 ERA)

The 29-year-old right-hander has been shelled for 16 earned runs over his last three starts. He’s walked 14 in those outings with eight strikeouts. He leads MLB with 16 homers allowed. The Angels have dropped seven of his last 10 starts.

Blake Beavan, Seattle Mariners (3-5, 5.22 ERA)

The 23-year-old right-hander has served up 14 homers, including three in last Tuesday’s 6-1 loss to the Angels. He’s been tagged for 18 hits and 11 earned runs in his last two starts. Batters are hitting .290 against him this season. On the plus side, he’s walked only three batters in his last 23 innings.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sunday Night Baseball: Tigers at Reds
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Detroit Tigers at Cincinnati Reds (-140, 9)

Interleague play continues on Sunday Night Baseball as the Cincinnati Reds host the Detroit Tigers in the rubber game of their three-game series. Cincy took the opener 6-5 in 10 innings, but Detroit bounced back with a 3-2 win Saturday behind Prince Fielder.

                      Tale of two seasons

Drew Smyly has been up and down this season. He was fantastic during his first five starts, giving up just six runs. He defeated the Yankees at New York back on April 28th in his fourth career start and things were going great. It began to turn on Smyly on May 14th with a game at the White Sox. He gave up four runs in just five innings and has since allowed four runs in each of his past five starts, including last Tuesday when he lost 4-2 versus Cleveland as a -155 home favorite.

                      Homer Happy

The 26-year old Homer Bailey also has been a roller-coaster pitcher this season. He was awful in his last outing on Tuesday, allowing six runs and eight hits in just three innings of work versus a weak Pittsburgh offense. Bailey lost that game 8-4 as a -150 home favorite. Bailey's previous four starts had been spectacular as the right-hander allowed just seven runs total in 28 innings of work fpr an excellent 2.25 ERA. The problem with Bailey has been inconsistency over his career. The once highly-touted prospect is just 29-27 with a 4.83 career ERA and has yet to live up to his potential.

                      Under-achievers

The Tigers were the overwhelming pick (-1250) to win the AL Central before the year began as their off-season acquisitions seemed to fit a team that was already in good shape. Surprisingly, they are just 27-32, with many reasons for their weak start. The bullpen has been inconsistent, with Jose Valverde blowing several save attempts. The team is also dealing with injuries to Austin Jackson, Alex Avila, Andy Dirks, Doug Fister and Victor Martinez. Finally, the hitting just hasn't been what they expected as a number of regulars are off to slow starts. They jettisoned Brandon Inge, who seems to have found his power in Oakland.

                      Hitter to watch

Prince Fielder is 6-for-17 (.353) versus Homer Bailey. The slugger enters Sunday Night Baseball batting .316 with 10 homers and 39 RBIs after going deep in Saturday's 3-2 win and driving in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning, two-out single.

                      Trends to watch

Tigers are 1-5 in Smyly's last six starts.

Tigers are 48-21 in their last 69 Sunday games.
