Friday’s betting tips: Dodgers stinking up interleague play

    Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at San Francisco Giants - 16 mph winds are expected to blow out to centerfield.

    Who’s hot

Euro 2012: Greece have lost just one of 21 games under Fernando Santos and were unbeaten during their qualifying campaign.

MLB: Yankees are 8-3 in their last 11 interleague games.

MLB: Over is 20-6 in Cardinals last 26 home games.

WNBA: Connecticut Sun are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 road games.

    Who’s not

Euro 2012: The Czech Republic has won three of their last five international matchups, but suffered a shocking 2-1 defeat to Hungary in their last warm-up match.

MLB: Padres are 2-9 in their last 11 overall.

MLB: Dodgers are 8-20 in their last 28 interleague games.

WNBA: Over is 8-21-1 Tulsa Shock's last 30 overall.

    Key stat

7.3 – The Seattle Mariners averaged 7.3 runs per game during their nine-game road trip. They went 5-4 against the Rangers, White Sox and Angels while playing over the total six times. They’re averaging only 4.25 runs per game on the year heading into their series with the visiting Dodgers.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Milan Baros, Czech Republic – Baros strained a hamstring in Tuesday’s training session and is having a tough time getting fit for Friday’s match with Russia. He’s one of the club’s big scoring threats, having netted 41 international goals.

    Game of the day

New York Mets at New York Yankees (-130, N/A)

    Notable quotable

"We are up to this task. For sure one thing that will not be lacking in us is determination and will for the fight. We can talk about all sorts of things today, but tomorrow we have to go out and show what we have in our shorts." - Poland captain Jakub Blaszczykowsk about opening the 2012 Euro tournament on home soil against Greece, which spoiled the party for 2004 host Portugal in the opener. Poland is set as a -118 favorite with the draw at +220 and a Greece upset at +320.

    Notes and tips

Jason Marquis will be activated by the Padres on Thursday and will start against the Giants at Petco Park. "I'm excited to get going," Marquis, 33, said "Mentally, I'm refreshed. I feel good physically." The last 10 months have been rough for Marquis, who has a 106-102 record with a 4.63 ERA in a career that spans 13 seasons and now eight teams. He had a 2-4 record with an 8.47 earned run average when the Twins released him 10 days ago.

The New York Liberty has rebounded to win and cover in consecutive games after dropping their first five of the year straight up, but they still have some work to do on the road. The Liberty are in Washington Friday a place where they haven’t won since 2009. New York has lost its three road games this season by an average of 21.3 points.

The last-place Phillies were dealt another blow when Gold Glove-worthy rookie second baseman Freddy Galvis was plopped on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back injury. Galvis, who has started 44 of the Phillies' 58 games this season in place of injured All-Star Chase Utley, exited Wednesday's game in the middle of his at-bat in the fifth inning. The Phils now have nine players on the disabled list, including a former MVP (Ryan Howard), a two-time Cy Young Award winner (Roy Halladay) and two other former All-Stars (Chase Utley and Jose Contreras).

      Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Pittsburgh Pirates are 29-27, which wouldn't be big news except for the fact that the Pirates' last winning season was 20 years ago.

-- I'm convinced Lebron James is more comfortable fading away when he shoots, as opposed to standing still, like for foul shots.

-- Milwaukee Brewers used 21 different lineups in their last 21 games.

-- Oakland A's won Brandon McCarthy's last six starts; he's going to make a lot of money in free agency this winter.

-- Why would a player who wants to play in the NBA go to the
Draft Combine but not work out? How does that help his rating?

-- NCAA is investigating Idaho State after LY's interim coach, who was not retained by the school, turned one of ISU's boosters in for offering to pay off players to play for the Bengals. Wonder if the virtuous interim coach would've been so honest had he gotten the job full-time?

      *************

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud........

      13) Only once in the last 38 years (1985) have NBA playoff games been faster-paced than regular season games were that season. Playoffs include a lot more half-court basketball, lot more late shot clock situations, which requires players who can make difficult shots under pressure. Its not as much fun to watch, especially when the same two teams play each other seven times in two weeks.

      12) Everyone knows everyone else’s plays. How teams double the post changes from game-to-game, but those are subtle changes. So you get more fouling, but its not the refs’ fault. Games are just a lot more physical, and tensions mount as the physical contact increases. The last time regular season NBA games averaged more fouls/game than playoffs games was 1983. You get the picture.

      11) If I owned the Saints, and Lord knows I’m not a wealthy guy and wealthy people think differently, but anyway, if I were Tom Benson, I’d call Drew Brees (not his agent) and find out what it would take to get him signed, then he’d pretty much get whatever he wanted, within reason.

Brees has the Saints over a barrel, just admit it and move on; he will be the de facto offensive coordinator this season. You need him working with a clear mind, unifying the other players.

      10) Logan Morrison is hitting .368 in day games, .142 at night; not sure why this would be, since roof is closed for just about every Miami home game anyway, but maybe he needs to take a nap before night games.

      9) SI.com ran a terrific article on Joey Votto this week; it said that over the last four seasons, Votto had come to bat 2,138 times, and hit three (3) infield pop-ups, as well as one foul ball into the stands on the first base (his pull) side. Cincinnati is definitely a hitter’s yard, but those are staggering numbers no matter where he plays.

      8) Since 2010, the major league leaders in on-base percentage: Votto .428, Miguel Cabrera .424, Prince Fielder .404. Votto is that good.

      7) My A’s are a weird organization; they announced that Scott Hatteberg will replace Ray Fosse for 20 games on A’s TV broadcasts this season. Fosse has broadcast A’s games for 27 years; he has made it clear there is nothing wrong with him and its not his call. Hatteberg has zero broadcast experience. I’m in no way in favor of this-- it’s often a cold world.

      6) By the way, I’d feel better about the A’s if the front office spent less time worrying about TV announcers and more time finding a 1B who can hit. Or a 3B. Or if they just tried to win before they get their new stadium in San Jose, if they get it at all.

      5) Jeff Van Gundy is confused why people don't like the Heat; its because people resent the players putting together their own team, and then pretty much declaring themselves champs before they had practiced together.

Free agency has been great for the players; it sucks for the fans.

      4) President Obama raised $60M in May, which is impressive, except for the fact that Mitt Romney raised $76M. Where does all that money go?

      3) If you bet season over/under win totals in baseball, use W-L records in one-run games to identify risers/fallers the next year. Arizona was 28-16 in one-run games LY; they’re 5-11 this year. Breaks of the game don’t fall the same way every year.

      2) Basketball player named Jared Uthoff went to Wisconsin this past year, but red-shirted, meaning he still has four years to play ball after not playing in games this season, but the kid wanted to transfer.

The school has to release the player from his scholarship so he can transfer and get another scholarship, which is most always done, but Badger coach Bo Ryan only released the kid with a lengthy list of schools he couldn’t attend, and he got killed for it in the press. Seemed petty at the time.

Eventually, Ryan said he could go anywhere but another Big Dozen school, which is normally how its done. You don’t want your old recruits playing against you. So everything wound up normal until this week.

      1) So what happens? Uthoff is paying his own way to go to Iowa (league rival of Wisconsin’s) next year, making people in the know believe Uthoff-to-Iowa was a done deal from the start, and that takes lot of heat off of Ryan, who apparently had an inkling of what was going on.

All of this should make Badger-Hawkeye games more fun to watch the next few years. Uthoff could’ve gone to Iowa State/Creighton or a few other quality programs for free, but he chose to pay to go to Iowa. Interesting.

Public opinion: Bettors still riding Angels’ streak

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 8:30 p.m. ET, Thursday.

        MLB:

Los Angeles Angels at Colorado Rockies (+135, 9)

The Angels are on a major roll, having won 11 of their last 15 overall and six straight road games. They send C.J. Wilson to the mound and he has allowed only one run in his last three outings. The Angels lead the bigs with 38 quality starts this season.

        Consensus: Angels, 64 percent

        WNBA:

Tulsa Shock at Chicago Sky (-12, 146)

Chicago’s 5-foot-9 guard Epiphanny Prince leads the WNBA in scoring and could have another big night against the winless Shock. Tulsa gives up an average of 78.7 points per game and allow opponents to shoot better than 46 percent from the floor.

        Consensus: Sky, 57 percent

Belmont Stakes: History working against I'll Have Another

The post positions are drawn, the horses are in New York, and all we can do now is wait and count the seconds until we get to see if history will be made and I’ll Have Another can become the 12th Triple Crown winner.

For bettors, the biggest decision is a simple one — are you with him or against him? With his morning line odds set at 4/5, and the public likely to bet him down further, you can’t afford to hedge your bets on him, so it’s all-or-nothing this time around.

To help you decide which side you fall on here are four relevant Belmont Stakes trends to ponder. I’ll warn you in advance — if you really want I’ll Have Another to win the Triple Crown then you probably won’t want to read any further because these trends aren’t particularly kind to Triple Crown contenders:

          Chasing the Triple Crown

Affirmed was the last horse to win the Triple Crown, and he did it in 1978. I’ll Have Another will be the 12th horse to try to win the Belmont after previously winning the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.

Needless to say, all 11 of those horses — some of them incredibly good horses who went on to have brilliant careers — fell short in the Belmont.

Real Quiet came the closest in 1998 when he was beaten by a nose. Others, like Big Brown in 2008, have been beaten soundly.

There are a lot of ways you could explain this. For one, the horses have had to run two races in a row very aggressively to win, and now they are coming back on short rest to face the toughest test of their careers.

It’s difficult for a horse to put forth a top effort three times in five weeks in long races, and that’s increasingly a challenge as horses are bred more and more for speed over stamina.

On top of that, every other horse and rider in the field is focused entirely on beating them, so they are running with a giant target on their back. Many horses in the race are fresher, and they have specifically been aimed at this race.

It all adds up to a whole lot of history for I’ll Have Another to overcome. He’s a very nice horse, but better ones than him have failed.

Running in an earlier Triple Crown race

To interpret the trends here you need to decide what type of time frame you like to look at. In the last 18 years, 13 Belmont winners have previously run in at least one of the two earlier Triple Crown races. That’s good news for I’ll Have Another, Dullahan, Optimizer and Union Rags as well.

Four of the five horses that had no previous experience have won in the last five years, though. Summer Bird in 2009 is the only one in that shorter time frame that had run before — a lousy showing in the Derby.

It’s up to you to determine whether the change in the tide recently is just the coincidence or the start of a new trend.

Running in both previous Triple Crown races

Only I’ll Have Another and Optimizer are iron horses this year. Recent history indicates that this feat of stamina works against his chances.

Of the last 10 Belmont winners only one — Afleet Alex in 2005 — had previously run in both races. Last year we saw three iron horses in the Belmont, but the best any of them could do is finish fifth — in a field much weaker than this one.

Long shots paying off, favorites aren’t

I’ll Have Another is 4-5 in the morning line, so there obviously will be some real long shots in this field.

With the favorite looking so good, and Dullahan and Union Rags seeming formidable at lower odds as well, it can be easy to assume that long shots aren’t worth more than a passing look here.

          Recent history suggests differently.

In the last 16 years of the race we have seen six winners pay off with at least 25/1 odds. Last year’s winner, Ruler on Ice, offered the lowest payoff of that group, while Sarava in 2002 was the biggest payday at 70/1.

I wouldn’t recommend the strategy, but if you had bet on every horse in the field at 20/1 or over the last 16 years you would be comfortably ahead right now.

Favorites have not been nearly so generous to their backers. Typically, the horse with the lowest odds wins about 1/3 of all races. In the last 16 years, only two favorites have come out on top.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

Matt Harrison, Texas Rangers (7-3, 4.37 ERA)

Aside from two consecutive nightmare starts, Harrison has been very consistent this year. He heads into Friday’s date with the Giants riding a three-game winning streak. He allowed just five earned runs over that stretch but wasn’t happy about giving up three walks and a homer in his last outing, a 7-3 win over the Angels.

Johan Santana, New York Mets (3-2, 2.38 ERA)

Santana’s coming off the first no-hitter in New York Mets history, striking out eight and walking five but don’t forget how good he was in his outing before that too. He threw a complete-game shutout at home against the Padres allowing just four hits while striking out eight. Santana has now thrown at least six innings in eight straight starts.

                    Slumping

Jake Arrieta, Baltimore Orioles (2-7, 5.53 ERA)

Arrieta blanked the Yankees over eight innings back on May 2, but has been a complete mess since with an 0-5 record and a 7.96 ERA in his last six trips to the mound. His ERA has jumped almost two full runs during the slump. He allowed four runs and walked four batters in 4 2/3 innings last weekend against Tampa Bay.

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (4-5, 5.32 ERA)

Floyd has been absolutely terrible in his last four starts, giving up 26 runs and six homers in only 19 2/3 innings. He was dynamite through his first four outings of the year, so the White Sox are going to let him work through the problems on the mound. Floyd says he still feels good on the hill but admits he’s having trouble keeping the ball down.

MLB stat attack: Best interleague betting numbers
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now that interleague play is in its 16th season, the luster may have worn off the whole thing. The good news is we have more than enough numbers to compile some solid betting statistics.

All but one of Friday’s 15 MLB matchups are of the interleague variety, so here’s a look at some interesting numbers centering on when the American League and the National Leagues clash.

52 percent – The American League has won 52 percent of all interleague games dating back to 1997 and was 131-121 (52 percent) in 2011. The AL was 24-18 during the first session of interleague play this year.

.258 – The American League had a .258 interleague batting average heading into this season’s play with 255 home runs.

.250 - The NL lags behind with a .250 interleague batting average and 208 homers.

.360 – Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia leads all hitters with a .360 batting average in interleague play (minimum 300 at-bats). Pedroia is looking to find his timing after missing about a week with a thumb injury. He’s hitting .291 with five homers and 22 RBI this season, while the Red Sox head into Friday’s game against Washington with a .566 interleague winning percentage, third best in the bigs.

3.56 – American League pitchers owned a 3.56 ERA in interleague play heading into this season.

4.00 – National League pitchers had a 4.00 interleague ERA ahead of 2012.

15 – The New York Mets and New York Yankees have played over the total in 15 of their last 22 meetings, and the Yankees have won four of their last five against the Mets.

9 – The San Francisco Giants have won nine of their last 11 interleague games.

3.02 – Johan Santana owns the third best all-time interleague ERA at 3.02, trailing only Freddy Garcia and David Wells. He’s scheduled to face the Yanks on the heels of his no-hitter.

2 – The Atlanta Braves have lost just two of their last 13 interleague games.

I'll Have Another scratched from Belmont Stakes

Belmont Stakes favorite and Triple Crown hopeful, I’ll Have Another, is scratched from Saturday’s race due to injury.

Trainer Doug O’Neill broke the devastating news on the Dan Patrick Show. I’ll Have Another was a +140 favorite for the Belmont after winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes.

"We ain't taking any chances," said O'Neill, who believes I'll Have Another has run his last race.

I’ll Have Another was in line to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed, 34 years ago. Dullahan and Union Rags, who were priced at +450 before the scratch, are expected to move to the top of the Belmont Stakes odds.
