Wednesday’s betting tips: M’s starter going on short rest

    Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics – 12 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Thunder are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.

NHL: Kings are 9-1 in their last 10 playoff games as a favorite.

MLB: Home team is 5-0 in umpire Alfonso Marquez's last five games behind home plate. He's scheduled to work Wednesday's Royals-Twins matchup.

WNBA: Minnesota Lynx are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games overall.

    Who’s not

NBA: Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last five road games.

NHL: Under is 1-4-1 in the Devils' last six road games.

MLB: The Chicago Cubs are 0-4 in Paul Maholm's last four starts.

WNBA: Seattle Storm are 1-10 ATS in the last 11 meetings with Minnesota.

    Key stat

8.5 – The New Jersey Devils have just three power-play goals over the last two series, spanning 35 chances with a man advantage (8.5 percent) and have yet to connect with the man advantage in the Stanley Cup finals. The Devils failed to score on any of their six power plays in Game 3’s shutout loss to Los Angeles and are set as +170 underdogs in Wednesday’s Game 4.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Aramis Ramirez, Milwaukee Brewers – Ramirez sat out his second straight game Tuesday with a strained left quad injury and reportedly isn’t close to 100 percent. He’s hitting just .240 but has five homers and 30 RBI in the middle of the Brewers’ order.

    Game of the day

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, 201.5)

    Notable quotable

“You know, championship teams win on the road, and Oklahoma City just did that. So they've proven they're a championship caliber team. We have to go do that. If we can't win on Wednesday, we're not a championship caliber team. It's as simple as that. You look at anybody who's won championships, and they've won on the road as the process goes along. It's what you do. And they just did it. So we need to do the same thing to hold serve." – San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich ahead of Game 6.

    Notes and tips

The Seattle Mariners send struggling starter Heator Noesi to the mound Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels on just three days’ rest. Seattle was forced to skip Felix Hernandez in the rotation this time around as the ace deals with a sore back, forcing Noesi to move up. He hasn’t won a start in a full month and gave up three homers and six earned runs before getting the hook after 4 1/3 innings on Saturday. Seattle opened around +140 for Wednesday's game.

The Minnesota Lynx are closing in on the best record to start a season in WNBA history. Minnesota has won its first seven of the year – two away from tying the mark set by the 2001 and 2003 L.A Sparks - but the Lynx feel like they need to be better. They have dropped three of their last five against the number. "We're going to have to clean it up; we're not going to just rest on 'Yeah, we got the win," Maya Moore told reporters recently. "When we play at our best we feel unstoppable, and we still haven't played at our best." Minnesota is a 12-point favorite Wednesday at home to Seattle.

      Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Phil Steele's college football magazine is out; lot of great info in there for the coming season. Here are the six teams that had the best turnover ratios in the country last season.......

      6) NC State, +14-- Senior QB Glennon back after 31 TDs, 12 INT LY.

T3) Wisconsin, +16-- Former NC State QB Wilson gone after one year.
T3) Houston, +16-- Coach Sumlin won, then took off to Texas A&M.
T3) Toledo, +16-- Coach Beckman won, then took off to Illinois.

      2) LSU, +20-- Are now +51 in turnovers, the last five seasons.

      1) Oklahoma State, +21-- Lost seven starters on offense; have a new QB.

      ***************

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Random midweek stuff.........

      13) So far this season, 39 pitchers (20 in NL, 19 in AL) have pitched 9+ innings in a game; those pitchers are a combined 36-1, 0.41 in those 39 games, with Jake Peavy the only pitcher to lose (1-0). Cliff Lee (10 IP) and Matt Cain hooked up in a scoreless duel out west, with neither pitcher getting a decision. Everyone else won their start. But what happened to those 39 pitchers after going nine?

      12) In their next start after going nine (five of the 39 have yet to make that next start), those same pitchers are 12-10, 3.23; in their second start after going nine, they drop to 7-13, 5.75 and in the third start out, 7-10, 5.14. So the question needs to be asked, is it wise, in this day and age of coddling pitchers, to let a guy go nine innings?

      11) Cain, Peavy and Johan Santana are the only pitchers to go nine in consecutive starts this season; Cain/Peavy combined to go 0-1, 3.86 in that third start, while Santana’s third start, with two days’ extra rest after his no-hitter, will be Friday in the Bronx.

      10) If you take the three starts after a pitcher goes nine, you see that the over is 46-30-6 in those games. Do what you want with that information.

      9) Lakers picked up option on Andrew Bynum for next year, a $16.1M option; for that much cash, he should have to at least pretend to pay attention in every huddle—if you make $16M, you’re supposed to be a team leader. How about acting like one?

      8) Five colleges had guys taken in the first round of both of NFL/MLB drafts this year: LSU-Stanford-Texas A&M-Oklahoma State-Mississippi State.

      7) Typical Clippers; they have their best season in 20 years, but then let their GM walk to Portland, bringing their franchise’s momentum to a screeching halt. Its just no way to run a business.

      6) Spurs are on a 3-game losing skid but still have life; last NBA champ that had a 3-game skid during the playoffs: the ’04 Pistons, who lost Games 3-5 in the second round, against the Nets.

      5) John Mellencamp’s son will walk-on as a football player at Duke this fall; thought he might go to Indiana, where one of the buildings near their basketball arena is named after the famous singer.

      4) Attendance at baseball games in the Bronx is down 1,542 fans a game (3.6%) this year, after being down 3% last year; the arrogant bastards who run the franchise are blaming StubHub. I’m blaming the fact that the damn tickets are just too freakin’ expensive!!!! Oh yeah, and the $9 beers don’t help, either.

      3) Forgot to mention this when I was in Las Vegas last month; my rental car had a keyless ignition, just pushed a button to start the car. Never saw that before. Would’ve been nice if someone had told me that the car won’t start unless you also had your foot on the brake. Had to figure that one out on my own, and I'm not that smart. Took me a while

      2) Mets-Nationals game Tuesday night wasn't terribly well-played, but it was a facinating game, filled with strategy and twists/turns, with Valdespin hitting a homer/double, then making two crucial errors, and he didn't even get into the game until the sixth inning.

Baseball without the DH is a hell of a lot more interesting; makes managers think more and do more, and thats part of what makes baseball great. This game was a perfect example of that.

      1) Then there are the Miami Heat, on the brink of another playoff failure; James/Wade combined to shoot 21-47, the rest of the team 11-35. Bosh got back from his injury and had six offensive rebounds in 12 minutes, but why did he only play 12 minutes?

Spurs/Celtics were both up 2-0, now both have to win road games to keep their seasons alive; who would've thought that?

Public opinion: Spurs-Thunder bettors love the over

Odds and consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Tuesday.

        NBA:

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, 201.5)

Not long ago, the Spurs were unbeatable. Now they’re a loss away from elimination. Oklahoma City has all the momentum and those books that posted early lines of Thunder -4.5 quickly moved to -5. Meanwhile, bettors are jumping at the over.

        Consensus: Over, 71.4 percent

        NHL:

New Jersey Devils at Los Angeles Kings (-180, 4.5)

The Los Angeles Kings have absolutely dominated the Devils in the finals – at least on the scoreboard. The Kings have outscored New Jersey 8-2 through the first three games. Los Angeles has allowed three goals in just two games during the postseason.

        Consensus: Kings, 62.9 percent

        MLB:

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (+140, 7.5)

Texas’ Colby Lewis has been hot and cold for the last little while, but did allow just two earned runs in his last trip to the hill. Texas’ offense, putting up a league-best 5.51 runs per game, continues to sway bettors.

        Consensus: Rangers, 64 percent.

        WNBA:

Seattle Storm at Minnesota Lynx (-12, 147)

Minnesota keeps rolling along after capturing last season’s title, but the word is out on how good this Lynx club is. While Minnesota is 7-0 straight up this year, the team is just 4-3 against the spread, dropping three of its last five against the number.

        Consensus: Over, 60.2 percent

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Wednesday, June 6

Devils @ Kings (3-0) - West #8-seed Kings are on an amazing 15-2 playoff run, 5-2 here at Staples, where they can hoist the Stanley Cup tonight for first time in their 45 years of existence. OT goals in first two games had Kings pencilled in as a team of destiny, then they smoked NJ 4-0 in Game 3, scoring power play goals the only two times they had man advantage. Devils are 6-5 on road so far in playoffs. Kings are 2-5 on power play so far in series, Devils 0-13. Six of last seven King games stayed under the total.

Only time a team rallied from down 3-0 to win Finals series was Toronto back in the early 40's; nothing is impossible, but the Kings are on a serious roll. Just seems like this is their time to celebrate.

Devils at Kings Game 4: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Jersey Devils at Los Angeles Kings (-180, 4.5)

          THE STORY
: The Los Angeles Kings are a win away from their first Stanley Cup title - and they'll have the Staples Center crowd on their side as they look to complete the sweep Wednesday against the New Jersey Devils. The Kings are coming off what may have been their best game of the postseason, a 4-0 victory highlighted by Jonathan Quick's third shutout of the playoffs. The young netminder is considered the odds-on favorite to take home the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Kings finish off the Devils in Game 4.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBCS, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE DEVILS: Nothing is going right for New Jersey, which now needs to post four consecutive victories against one of the most dominant teams in playoff history. Even veteran netminder Martin Brodeur, who appeared to have turned back the clock in the first three series but stopped just 17 of 21 shots in Game 3. The Devils had their chances to generate offense in Monday's defeat, but finished 0-for-6 on the power play. That included a stretch of 5-on-3 hockey that lasted more than a minute. "We've got to win four straight," said Devils forward Zach Parise. "That's our approach. Win the next one. That's all we can do."

ABOUT THE KINGS: Los Angeles has taken a level-headed approach to the postseason, and being a game away from the most coveted award in pro hockey hasn't changed anything. "We can't take anything for granted," said Kings defenseman Drew Doughty. "It could have been two-nothing for them before (Game 3)." Special teams was the difference Monday night, as the Kings killed off all six New Jersey man advantage opportunities while going 2-for-2 on the power play. The second statistic is more notable, given that Los Angeles had gone five games without scoring a man-advantage goal.

          TRENDS:

          - Kings are 9-1 in their last 10 playoff games as a favorite.
          - Under is 7-0-1 in the last eight meetings.
          - Under is 3-0-1 in the Devils' last four overall.

          OVERTIME:

          1. The Kings are the first team to take a 3-0 lead in each series since the playoffs expanded to four best-of-seven rounds.

          2. The 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs are the only team in NHL history to rally from a 3-0 deficit to win the Stanley Cup.

          3. A win in any of the next four games would make Los Angeles the first No. 8 seed to capture a Stanley Cup title

Spurs at Thunder Game 6: What bettors need to know
            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-5, 201.5)

            THE STORY
: After making history with a 20-game winning streak, the San Antonio Spurs will see their season become history if they cannot avoid a fourth consecutive loss to the host Oklahoma City Thunder in Wednesday's Game 6 of the Western Conference finals. The Thunder moved within one win of the NBA Finals with a 108-103 victory in San Antonio on Monday night - giving them a chance to close out the series on their home floor, where they are 7-0 in the playoffs.

            TV: 9 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE SPURS: In an attempt to slow the Thunder's momentum, San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich inserted sixth man Manu Ginobili into the starting lineup for the first time in the playoffs and was rewarded with a game-high 34 points Monday night. The move came with a cost, though. The Spurs' bench was outscored 42-22 and the team committed 21 turnovers, including five apiece by Ginobili and point guard Tony Parker, who has struggled with his shot and has only 12 assists against 11 turnovers since a 34-point effort in Game 2. San Antonio has made two valiant fourth-quarter comebacks in the past two games but it continues to be plagued by a second-quarter malaise, falling behind by double digits in the first half of the past three contests.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: On the verge of blowing a 13-point fourth-quarter lead, reigning Sixth Man of the Year James Harden drilled a long 3-pointer inside of 30 seconds to put the Spurs on the brink of elimination. Oklahoma City has been able to build early double-digit leads in the past two games with minimal contributions from three-time scoring champion Kevin Durant, who had 22 of his 27 points in the second half. Russell Westbrook had a near-disastrous sloppy stretch late in Game 5, but he negated that by scoring 23 points and posting a season-high 12 assists. With Harden averaging 19 points in the series, the Spurs have not been able to match up defensively, one reason why the Thunder are scoring 107.5 points per game in the last four.

            TRENDS:
            - Spurs are 1-4 ATS in their last five games as an underdog.
            - Thunder are 6-1-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.
            - Over is 7-2 in the last nine meetings.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. The Thunder can become the 15th team in NBA history to erase a 2-0 deficit and win a best-of-seven series.

            2. After going 50 days without a loss, the Spurs have been beaten three times in five days.

            3. San Antonio has never won a playoff series when forced to play a Game 6 on the road. The Spurs won in Dallas in Game 6 in 2006, but proceeded to lose Game 7 at home.

                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wednesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                        ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        Streaking

Max Scherzer, Detroit Tigers (5-3, 5.55 ERA)

Scherzer has been throwing fireballs over his last three starts. He has won each of those outings and the Tigers have won all five of his last turns in the rotation. In his last three, the St. Louis native has struck out 30 batters while walking just five. The only downside to his streak is that he’s allowed at least one homer in seven consecutive outings.

Felipe Paulino, Kansas City Royals (3-1, 1.70 ERA)

Paulino has quickly become the Royals’ ace after pitching shutouts in four of his six starts this season. The big righty held the Athletics off the board for six innings last week, striking out five and walking three. With a fastball that averages in the mid-90s, he’s always been a big punch-out pitcher, but now he’s keeping the ball down and limiting his walks.

                        Slumping

                        Wei-Yen Chen, Baltimore Orioles (4-2, 3.75 ERA)

Chen allowed five earned runs in the first inning last week before settling down a bit to pitch 5 1/3 innings. He also struggled with his control, walking five batters. The Orioles have lost each of his last five trips to the mound and the lefty is working on a fat 7.31 ERA over that span.

Bud Norris, Houston Astros (5-2, 4.52 ERA)

Norris was one of the most profitable pitchers on MLB’s money list standing up until his last two starts. He was smoked for seven hits and nine earned runs in just 1 2/3 innings during last week’s loss in Colorado. The allowed three runs on eight hits over 4 2/3 innings in another loss before that and is reportedly dealing with a hip flexor problem that could have something to do with his

Cards should be best bet in MLB according to run differential

                          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We’re a little more than one-third of the way through the baseball season, and we’re still struggle to separate the contenders from the pretenders.

Looking at teams' run differential sand using the Bill James Pythagorean Theorem can help spot some overvalued and undervalued teams.

The Pythagorean Theorem, devised by the noted baseball statistician and author, is based on the theory that runs scored and allowed are a better indicator of a team's future performance than its current winning percentage. A team's Pythagorean Winning Percentage is determined by this formula: Winning percentage = (runs scored*2/runs scored*2+runs allowed*2)

Using the formula, let's look at two teams overachieving and two who are underachieving.

                          THE OVERACHIEVERS

                          NEW YORK METS

The Mets have been a great story, getting off to a 31-24 start after being picked universally to finish last in the National League East. Their fans have began to wonder if the Mets are the team of destiny following left hander Johan Santana's no-hitter last Friday, the first in the franchise's 50-year history.

But the Mets are seven games over .500 despite being outscored 250-243. They will truly be the Amazin's if they continue to win at that pace as their Pythagorean record is just 27-28.

A 16-7 record in games decided by two runs or less has helped the Mets get within 1/2 game of co-leaders Miami and Washington in the NL East but history shows performance in close games tends to even out over the course of a 162-game season.

Another sign of good fortune is the Mets' .320 batting average on balls in play (BABIP) -- those plate appearances not resulting in a walk, strikeout or home run -- which is the best in baseball and 26 points higher than the .294 major-league average.

Maybe Santana's gem wasn't a sign from the heavens.

                          CLEVELAND INDIANS

Indians manager Manny Acta is one of the few major-league managers who understand principles like The Pythagorean Theorem. He realizes his 28-25 club is living on borrowed time unless it reverses the trend of allowing more runs than it scores (257-233), which translates to a 23-28 Pythagorean record.

The Indians have been the kings of one-run games, going 10-2 thanks in large part to closer Chris Perez converting 17 save opportunities since a meltdown on opening day. Yet sustaining an .833 winning percentage in any type of situation over a six-month season is bucking tremendous odds.

                          THE UNDERACHIEVERS

                          ST. LOUIS CARDINALS

The Cardinals are hovering around .500 at 28-27, but, if any team seems ready to take off, it's the defending World Series champions.

The Cardinals' plus-48 run differential -- 276 scored, 228 allowed -- is the best in the major leagues and translates to 32-23 on the Pythagorean scale.

The Cardinals are just 5-14 in games decided by two runs or less, including 1-9 on the road. Conversely, they are 23-13 when the margin is at least three runs. A well-timed run here or there is really all the Cardinals need.

                          SEATTLE MARINERS

The Mariners have scored one more run than they've allowed (242-241) but only have a 25-32 record to show for it. That is four games under their Pythagorean mark of 29-28.

Much of the Mariners' record can be traced to hitting in bad luck as their .276 BABIP is fifth-worst in baseball. Nobody has hit in tougher luck than shortstop Brendan Ryan, whose .219 average on balls in play at least partially explains his anemic .171 batting average.

Deposed closer Brandon League didn't help as he blew four save opportunities before being demoted to a set-up role two weeks ago
