Tuesday’s betting tips: Can A.J. Burnett’s hot streak last?

    Weather to watch

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics – 15 mph winds expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Celtics are 7-1 ATS in their last eight meetings with Miami.

MLB: Pirates are 5-0 in A.J. Burnett's last five starts.

MLB: Giants are 6-2 in their last eight meetings in San Diego.

WNBA: Under is 14-6 in the Liberty's last 20 home games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The over is 9-25 in Heat's last 34 home games.

MLB: The under is 0-7 in the last seven meetings between the Astros and Cardinals.

MLB: Cubs are 1-10 in their last 11 meetings in Milwaukee.

WNBA: The Atlanta Dream are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games overall.

    Key stat

17.4 – The New York Liberty lost their first five games of the season by an average of 17.4 and didn’t cover the number in any of those losses. They finally rebounded to post a season-high 87 points in a blowout win over Indiana in their last outing, covering as 3.5-point underdogs. The Liberty look to build on that win Tuesday as 2-point favorites at home to Atlanta.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Joe Mauer, Minnesota Twins – Mauer left Sunday’s win over Cleveland with a right thumb sprain and is considered day-to-day. He is hitting .298 with three homers, 25 RBI and 31 runs scored for the Twins, who average only 3.96 runs per game (23rd in MLB).

    Game of the day

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-8, 179.5)

    Notable quotable

"I think we've had one practice maybe since the Atlanta series - or during the Atlanta series. I don't know if we've had one. It's not by choice. I mean, it's by need. It's what we have, so we have no choice in the matter. We're just too old. We're tired and old and banged up. I just look at it that if I have a choice between the legs and the brains, I'm going to take the legs every single time.” – Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers about his team’s practice schedule in the playoffs. The Celtics weren’t expected to practice Monday, before Tuesday’s Game 5, either.

    Notes and tips

Cleveland Indians catcher Carlos Santana is expected to be activated before Tuesday’s game against the Detroit Tigers. Santana has been on the disabled list since he suffered a concussion May 25 when a foul tip hit his mask in Chicago. He took batting practice, ran the bases and worked a bullpen session Sunday without problems. He was scheduled to DH for Class-A Lake County on Monday night. Santana is battling .245 with five home runs and 24 RBI.

Kurt Busch has been suspended from this weekend's activities at Pocono Raceway by NASCAR as a result of his actions in the Nationwide Series event at Dover International Speedway this past Saturday. Busch was already on probation because of a run-in with Ryan Newman's crew following the May 12 Sprint Cup event at Darlington Raceway. After his fourth-place finish in Saturday's Nationwide race he verbally berated a reporter. “It refrains me from not beating the s--- out of you right now because you ask me stupid questions,” Busch said in a video posted by Speed Channel. “But since I'm on probation, I suppose that's improper to say as well.”

New York Mets left fielder Jason Bay is expected to be activated from the disabled list Tuesday. The team thought it might ease Bay back into the lineup as a DH in its upcoming interleague games, but his rib injury looks to have healed enough that he’ll also play the field Tuesday. He’s hitting just .240 with three homers and five RBI in 15 games this year.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Phil Steele's college football magazine is out; lot of great info in there for the coming season. Here are the six teams that had the worst turnover ratios in the country last season.......

T113) Central Michigan, Florida, Iowa State, all -12.

      116) Bowling Green -13-- 17 starters back, could jump up in MAC.

      T117) East Carolina, -14-- 11-14 last 2 years; scored 27+ in 8/14 losses.

T117) Fresno State, -14-- New coach heading into the Mountain West.

      119) Notre Dame, -15-- Get over yourself and join a conference.

      120) SMU, -16-- Texas transfer Gilbert expected to be the new QB.

      ******************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but..........

      13) So I've been sitting here in a stupor for the last half-hour; the A's went through a stretch recently where they scored a total of 14 runs in ten games; they just scored eight runs in the second inning against the Rangers. Weird that the Tigers cut Brandon Inge, but he's really helped Oakland. All he has to do now is stay healthy for an extended period.

      12) I'll keep saying this until someone listens; if the NBA wants fewer guys to flop on defense, then call fewer charging fouls. Coaches won't stand for their guys lying on the floor if they're not getting offensive fouls called.

      11) Wonder what TNT's Craig Sager thinks of Gregg Popovich; guy makes John Tortorella look like Dick Vitale. Popovich said a total of four words in his interview after the third quarter Monday night. Maybe his team would play better if he loosened up a little bit.

      10) MLB Network has a terrific idea televising the amateur draft this week, but problem is, we don’t know any of the players. In football/basketball, we know most of the high draft picks, having watched them play at least a little bit in college. In baseball, they’re just names until they get some time in down in the minors.

One way to spruce up the draft would allow picks to be traded; all of us understand that end of it. Some teams would go nuts trading their picks (could you imagine if George Allen had had 40+ picks a year to trade when he coached in the NFL??), some would accumulate picks.

      9) Baseball has moved the signing deadline up a month from previous years, to July 13. Only players who can sign after July 13 are college seniors who don't have any more college eligibility left. This will allow all the draft picks to play some ball in short season rookie leagues this summer.

      8) We said yesterday that the A’s are the first team since the 1954 Pirates to get shut out 11+ times in their first 54 games. Looking back at those ’54 Bucs, we see they went 53-101, not very good. One of their best players in '54 was an outfielder named Frank Thomas, who eight years later, played for the infamous 42-120 expansion Mets' team. That must've been fun.

Weird thing is that only six years after that 53-101 debacle, the Pirates won the World Series. Maybe there's hope for the A's after all.

      7) Game 4 of Miami-Boston series was first NBA playoff game in 20 years where the leading scorer on both sides fouled out of the game.

      6) NBA refs don’t get a lot of respect and in too many cases, rightfully so; sometimes, it just seems like they blow the whistle and guess. Another reason why legalizing any type of zone defense would make the game better. There would be less physical contact, less marginal calls to make.

      5) Best wishes to former Met/Oriole GM Jim Duquette, who donated a kidney to his 10-year old daughter Monday.

      4) If you hear the term “aggravated DUI”, that means the driver blew more than .15% on his/her breathalyzer test. Not good. Big trouble.

      3) There is an actual beer called "Arrogant Bastard Ale". Seriously.

Speaking of which, our greedy bastard update finds gas down to $3.79 at a Mobil station at corner of Fuller/Central in beautiful downtown Colonie. It had been as high as $4.09 recently; must be an election year.

      2) You want to feel good for an excellent Thunder team, but then you realize this is the franchise the NBA stole from the city of Seattle, which had been great supporters of the SuperSonics for 35 years. Doesn't seem right.

      1) Guy named Phil Anschutz owns the LA Kings; supposedly he is worth $7 billion. He's a couple days away from winning the Stanley Cup. What do you do for fun when you're worth $7B? Answer: Anything you want.

Public opinion: Celtics supporters have faith

        NBA:

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-8, 179.5)

While everybody’s talking about Chris Bosh’s possible return, Ray Allen stepped up with a big effort in Game 4 for the Celtics. He hit four treys and had 16 points and says his ankles are finally feeling a bit better.

        Consensus: Celtics, 65 percent.

        MLB:

San Francisco Giants at San Diego Padres (+105, N/A)

The Giants have won just three of Tim Lincecum’s last 17 starts, though he did look a lot better than he has in his last start. San Francisco has also won seven of its last eight at Petco Park.

        Consensus: Giants, 69 percent

        WNBA:

Atlanta Dream at New York Liberty (-2, 160)

The Liberty finally got in the win column the last time they took the court and also covered their first pointspread in a blowout win over Indiana. After that win, oddsmakers opened with the Liberty set as 1-point favorites. That line has since jumped a point. Bettors are pretty much split down the middle on this one.

        Consensus: Dream, 52 percent

          Armadillo's Write-Up

          Tuesday, June 5

Celtics @ Heat (2-2)-- Home teams are now 7-1 in this round, after the Spurs lost last night; much like SA, tremendous pressure on host Heat here, to win as expected. Wade/Chalmers combined to shoot 12-35 last game, with James taking only eight FTs; he took 13 FTs in two games in Boston, after taking 24 last time teams met here. Over is now 7-3 in ten Celtic playoff wins; under is 4-2-1 in their losses, so containing Rondo is job #1. He has 77 points, 35 assists in last three games and has kicked Miami's butt at every turn. When Miami went smaller late in Game 4, it defended well but couldn't get a rebound when it counted; Miami is 6-4 vs spread at home in these playoffs.

Celtics at Heat Game 5: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boston Celtics at Miami Heat (-8, 179.5)

          THE STORY:
The Eastern Conference finals are now a best-of-3 series as the Miami Heat host the Boston Celtics in Tuesday’s Game 5. Boston swept two home games and evened the best-of-7 series at 2-2 with a 93-91 overtime victory on Sunday. Rajon Rondo hit the go-ahead hoop for the Celtics and Dwyane Wade missed a final-second 3-pointer for the Heat. It was the second overtime contest of the series as Miami notched a 115-111 victory in Game 2.

          TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN

ABOUT THE CELTICS: Rondo had 15 points and 15 assists in Game 4 and has 13 double-digit assist games in the postseason. Magic Johnson (14 in 1991) and John Stockton (14 in 1992) are the last players to have more in a single postseason. Forward Paul Pierce scored a team-best 23 points but the most pleasing sight was guard Ray Allen draining four 3-pointers on the way to a series-best 16 points. Allen’s shooting has been suspect due to an ankle injury. “My legs have gotten considerably better,” Allen said. “Just starting the game and having my legs underneath me is a huge deal.”

ABOUT THE HEAT: Forward LeBron James scored 29 points and Wade tallied 20 but Miami’s top player in Game 4 was forward Udonis Haslem. The nine-year veteran had his second double-double of the series with 12 points and 17 rebounds. James had 29 points and fouled out for the first time since joining the Heat, rendering him a spectator for the final 1:51 of overtime. “Not stressed the series is tied 2-2,” James said. “It’s great basketball, great competition.” Miami is holding out hope that forward Chris Bosh can return from a lower abdominal strain to play in Game 5. Bosh has missed nine straight games since being injured against the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the second-round series.

          TRENDS:

          - Heat are 7-2 ATS in their last nine home games.
          - Celtics are 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
          - Under is 25-9 in Heat's last 34 home games.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. Rondo has 38 career 10-assist playoff games, tying Hall of Famer Bob Cousy for Boston’s franchise record.

          2. Wade is shooting just 25.8 percent from the field and averaging 5.5 points in the first half during the series.

          3. Celtics forward Kevin Garnett had 17 points and 14 rebounds in Game 4 for his third double-double of the series and 12th of the postseason.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

                    A.J. Burnett, Pittsburgh Pirates (4-2, 3.60 ERA)

Two of MLB’s hottest starters share the mound Tuesday in Cincinnati. Burnett hasn’t allowed a run in his last 12 1/3 innings spanning two starts and has won three in a row overall. After the Cardinals pounded him for 12 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings in early May, he hasn’t allowed more than two runs in an outing in five starts.

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds (4-3, 3.73 ERA)

Bailey is coming off a complete-game 8-1 victory over Pittsburgh that saw him allow one run on four hits. The Reds have won each of his last four trips to the bump, while Bailey has walked only five batters during that stretch. Bailey threw 77 strikes on 103 pitches against the Pirates and didn’t allow a hit over the last four innings.

                    Slumping

Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs (0-3, 2.90 ERA)

Dempster has pitched well this season for the most part but still hasn’t won a start since Aug. 16, 2011. He wasn’t at his best last week against the Chicago White Sox, giving up three two-run homers and walking four before hitting the showers after only 4 1/3 innings. Dempster supporters are down 4.89 units this season.

Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants (2.6, 5.82 ERA)

The Giants are riding a six-game losing streak with Lincecum on the mound. He limited Arizona to one earned run on four hits in his last turn, but still walked five batters and allowed a home run. The good news is that he pitched seven innings for just the second time in six starts.

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Coors Field still helping over bettors
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back in 1995 when the Rockies opened Coors Field, the ballpark’s engineers had to be over bettors.

A stadium in the thin air of Denver was a great idea at the time, with all the ‘roid rage and longball love that was going on back then. Not much has changed since.

It probably shouldn’t be much of a shock to see Coors Field ranking at, or near the top, of many offensive statistics for MLB ballparks this season.

Coors currently ranks No. 1 in the bigs in ballpark OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) and as of Monday, had seen more homers (80) fly over its fences than any other team in the majors.

Here’s a quick look at the five top offensive parks in MLB (ranked here by OPS) and how their home teams are performing for bettors.

All stats current prior to Monday night's action.

                      Coors Field, Colorado Rockies
                      Home record: 15-15
                      Over/under home record: 18-10-2

Batters have a .486 slugging percentage at Coors and Rockies home games see an average of 12.50 runs per game. The Rockies are in Arizona for a few games before hosting the Angels later this week.

                      Fenway Park, Boston Red Sox
                      Home record: 13-14
                      Over/under home record: 17-9-1

After a slow start, the Red Sox are coming around at Fenway while making a pile of cash for over bettors. Red Sox faithful are seeing and average of 10.63 runs per game at Fenway with easily the highest double count (138) double count thanks in large part to the Green Monster. The Red Sox play at home all week.

                      Busch Stadium, St. Louis Cardinals
                      Home record: 13-11
                      Over/under home record: 18-6

Hitters are batting .282 at Busch Stadium with an average of 10.33 runs per game even though only 51 homers have been hit there so far this year. The Cards kick off a nine-game home stand this weekend against Cleveland.

                      Chase Field, Arizona Diamondbacks
                      Home record: 10-15
                      Over/under home record: 15-10

The Diamondbacks don’t have a great offense and haven’t been great in their own park this season, but Chase Field still sees an average of 9.64 runs per game. Hitters are slugging .446 so far at Chase and the Diamondbacks host the Rockies followed by the A’s this week.

                      Target Field, Minnesota Twins
                      Home record: 9-17
                      Over/under home record: 11-12-3

The Twins rank 23rd in the league averaging only 3.96 runs per game overall, but opponents are feasting on the club’s 5.15 ERA (30th). Hitters enjoy a .342 on-base percentage at Target, which will welcome in the Cubs this weekend.
