Saturday’s betting notes: Tiger's charging at The Memorial

    Weather to watch

Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants – 12 mph winds are expected to blow out to centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: Spurs are 18-8-3 ATS in their last 29 road games.

MLB: Cardinals are 9-2 in Lance Lynn’s last 11 starts.

NHL: Kings are 13-3 in their last 16 road games.

WNBA: Indiana Fever are 14-5 ATS in their last 19 home games.

    Who’s not

NBA: The under is 2-8 in the Thunder's last 10 games as a favorite.

MLB: Brewers are 3-11 in Shaun Marcum’s last 14 starts.

NHL: The over is 0-5-1 in the last six meetings between the Devils and Kings.

WNBA: Atlanta Dream are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games overall.

    Key stat

21 – The San Antonio Spurs’ 20-game winning streak came crashing down in Game 3’s blowout loss at Oklahoma City. A big part of the Spurs’ loss was the fact that they turned the ball over 21 times, while the Thunder have just 30 turnovers through three games in this series.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Ryan Braun, Milwaukee Brewers - Braun has been playing since the early days of the season with a tight right Achilles tendon, which flares up on occasion. One of those occasions was Thursday night, when Braun was withheld from the lineup for the series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers, a game Milwaukee won 6-2. Keep an eye on his status for this weekend’s series with Pittsburgh. Braun is hitting .309 with 14 homers, 36 RBI, and 10 stolen bases.

    Game of the day

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3.5, 202.5)

    Notable quotable

"It's a little bit harder to play in this type of climate, but both teams are doing it, so it's a little bit of an even playing field out there. You look at some of the plays tonight, with pucks bouncing, not a lot of good opportunities." – Los Angeles Kings captain Dustin Brown on the poor ice conditions at the New Jersey Devils’ Prudential Center, which was also an issue in the Eastern Conference finals. The Devils are set around -110 for the second game of the Stanley Cup finals on Saturday evening.

    Notes and tips

A two-hour rain delay didn’t bother Tiger Woods during his second round at The Memorial Friday. He played bogey-free on the front nine and finished 5-under par to sit tied for second place heading into Saturday’s action. Rory Sabbatini is at the top of the leaderboard at 6-under, one stroke better than a three-player pack tied for second. Woods went into the tournament priced at 15-1 to win.

The New York Liberty are back on the court Saturday following a full week off. Before that, they played four games in a span of seven days, failing to win or cover in any of those contests. Liberty coach John Whisenant used the week as a sort of training camp, since the club didn’t have much time to prepare for the season with many of its players still fulfilling commitments overseas. The Liberty visit the Indiana Fever as 11-point underdogs Saturday.

The Oakland A's have activated center fielder Yoenis Cespedes from the disabled list, the team announced Friday. Cespedes will take the roster spot left open when pitcher Tyson Ross was optioned to Class AAA Sacramento on Thursday. The Cuban slugger, who signed a four-year, $36 million free-agent contract with the A's during the offseason, suffered a strained muscle on the back of his left hand last month. He was placed on the disabled list May 12. Cespedes was hitting .245 with five home runs and 21 RBI before the injury. He has not played in the majors since May 6.

Public opinion: Devils bettors weigh in for Game 2

Odds and Consensus percentages current as of 8 p.m. ET, Friday.

      NBA:

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3.5, 202.5)

When asked how the Oklahoma City Thunder finally ended San Antonio’s 20-game winning streak, Kevin Durant had a simple answer: “We just played harder.” Game 2 stayed under the total, but five of the last seven meetings between the two teams have played over.

      Consensus: Over, 62 percent

      NHL:

Los Angeles Kings at New Jersey Devils (-110, 4.5)

If the New Jersey Devils are going to have a shot in this series, they’re going to have to manage a lot more than the 17 shots they fired at Jonathan Quick in Game 1’s overtime loss. The one goal they did score in Game 1 was actually put in by the Kings, so they have some work to do offensively, but early bettors see the Devils bouncing back Saturday.

      Consensus: Devils, 59.8 percent

      MLB:

Atlanta Braves at Washington Nationals (-125, N/A)

Gio Gonzalez is dealing some nasty stuff for the Nationals and leads the MLB money rankings at +8.07 units while placing second to Justin Verlander with 79 strikeouts. In his last outing, he held the Braves to just one hit over seven innings while striking out 10 and walking three. Looks like Nats supporters are going back to the well again.

      Consensus: Nationals, 65 percent

      WNBA:

New York Liberty at Indiana Fever (-11, 153)

The New York Liberty have dropped four straight games straight up and against to start the season. In last week’s blowout loss to Atlanta, Liberty coach John Whisenant called out his team’s defense after the Dream shot 49.4 percent from the floor and 50 percent from downtown. Outside of Cappie Pondexter, who’s averaging 17.5 points per game, the Liberty don’t have many threats, but early bettors are still taking the points here.

      Consensus: Liberty, 62.5 percent

NASCAR betting: Fed-Ex 400 preview and picks

As the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series leaves its longest race of the season, the 600-miler at Charlotte, the field can look forward to a relatively short 400 miles for the Fed-Ex 400 at Dover International Speedway Sunday.

Those 400 miles, however, come at the track nicknamed the Monster. The one-mile concrete oval has always been one of the toughest on the circuit, providing physical challenges to drivers and mechanical tests for crew chiefs. A few drivers have Dover figured out and some always struggle. It’s feast or famine.

One driver who has Dover figured out is Jimmie Johnson. Johnson won three of the last seven races here and has two Top-5s and a Top-10 finish in the other four. In addition, he has more wins than any other active driver, six overall, and the highest driver rating. He was second in the fall race and will look to add a second win to this season’s total. But ask Johnson why he does well at Dover and even he can’t quite understand it.

“I honestly don’t know,” Johnson told reporters. “It just suits my driving style and I guess you could say my stats show that. You really have to learn how to get through the corners there. If you get it to turn in the center and you get good forward grip off of the corner you will typically turn a good lap. That’s the tough part though, figuring out how to get your car do that. I’m looking forward to seeing what we’ve got for it though.”

Another driver in the “feast” category at Dover is Matt Kenseth. Kenseth has two wins here, including one in this race last year. He finished fifth in the fall and has six Top-5 finishes in the last seven races. He’s also second in the championship standings.

“Dover is my favorite track on the Sprint Cup circuit, and it’s been a place where we’ve had a lot of success at as well, so I just love racing there,” Kenseth said. “The track is so fast and challenging, and it’s unique because of the way you drive up out of the turns. The turns sit a bit lower than the straightaways and you can feel it when you’re driving out there. We’re just going to continue to try and put ourselves up front and into position to be able to be consistent each and every week.”

The Busch brothers have also found success at the Monster Mile. Kurt won the race last fall, while younger brother Kyle has two wins here, the last in 2010. Kyle will get the nod as this week’s spoiler, as Kurt is still trying to find his way with a new team. Kyle on the other hand is coming off a third-place finish at Charlotte last week and has had consistent finishes. He appears ready to score his second win of the season each and every week.

        Head-to-head

Carl Edwards vs. Greg Biffle: The Roush-Fenway teammates are having opposite seasons. Edwards is struggling while Biffle is leading the points. Both have won here before, but there’s a sense that Edwards is ready to stage a turnaround and begin a slow recovery. Look for Edwards to prevail in this matchup.

Martin Truex J. vs. Ryan Newman: Both Truex and Newman have won here and both are having OK seasons. Dover is the site of Truex’s first career win, that coming in 2007, while Newman’s win came in 2004. However, both were with other teams at the time, so it’s a different scenario now. Truex had the pole here in the fall but finished 30th, while Newman finished 23rd. Based on that recent history, look for Newman to repeat and finish ahead of Truex Sunday.

        Bottom line

Starting near the front is important - 51 races at Dover have been won from a Top-5 starting position while 18 races have been won from a starting position outside the Top 10. Thirteen drivers have won from the pole. The last to do so was Jimmie Johnson, in the 2010 September race. The furthest back in the field a race winner started was 37th, by Kyle Petty in 1995.

        Picks

        Jimmie Johnson (+600)
        Matt Kenseth (+1000)
        Kyle Busch (+800)

Kings (1-0) @ Devils-- New Jersey has been behind in all three series, 2-1 to Rangers and Florida, 1-0 to Flyers, so they've been in this spot before. West #8-seed Kings are on an amazing 13-2 playoff run, winning all nine games on road- they scored total of one goal in two losses. New Jersey has won the Stanley Cup three times; LA is making just second visit to Finals (lost 4-1 in '03 Final to Montreal, with three OT losses), but OT goal in Game 1 has people believing Kings are team of destiny. Total of only 42 shots on goal in Game 1, with Kings 0-1 on power play, Devils 0-3. Teams that don't play each other as often have less penalties, less pent-up hostilities built up over the years.

Kings at Devils Game 2: What bettors need to know
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Los Angeles Kings at New Jersey Devils (-110, 4.5)

          THE STORY:
No team has been able to use home-ice advantage to subdue the Los Angeles Kings so far in the postseason. That includes the New Jersey Devils, who fought gamely but ultimately dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the visiting Kings in the opening game of the Stanley Cup finals. Los Angeles will look to stretch its road record to 10-0 as it takes on the Devils in Saturday's Game 2. Anze Kopitar was the hero in the opener, scoring on a breakaway as the Kings improved to 13-2 in the playoffs.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, NBC, CBC, RDS

ABOUT THE KINGS: Los Angeles has made it look easy throughout the postseason, but the players know they're going to get a difficult test from the upstart Devils. "They're a great team," said Kings winger Justin Williams. "They come at you hard. They don't give you any space. They've got a heck of a forecheck and a great goalie. We expect more of this throughout the series." Kopitar came into the series with a reputation for big goals and emerged as the X-factor in Game 1. The Slovenian star is red-hot, with six goals and six assists over his last nine games.

ABOUT THE DEVILS: New Jersey knows it will need more than one shot every four minutes to win its first Stanley Cup since 2003. The Devils managed just 17 shots on Kings netminder Jonathan Quick, and head coach Peter DeBoer said his team probably deserved to lose for that reason. "It would have been nice to get a bounce, but I don't believe we deserved to win," he said. "That's the bottom line. If we had won, we would have been sneaking one out." Zach Parise was a minus-two in defeat, but extended his streak of consecutive games with at least one shot on goal to 186.

          TRENDS:
          - Kings are 13-3 in their last 16 road games.
          - Devils are 10-3 in their last 13 home games.
          - Under is 5-0-1 in the last 6 meetings.

          OVERTIME:

          1. Los Angeles managed just 25 shots in the opener, its lowest total since a series-clinching win over St. Louis in Round 2.

          2. Wednesday marked Brodeur's 200th career postseason game, making him the 20th NHL player to reach the plateau.

          3. Kopitar led the Kings' forwards in ice time (22:01) and shots on goal (four).

            ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Antonio Spurs at Oklahoma City Thunder (-3.5, 202.5)

            THE STORY:
It's often said that a playoff series doesn't truly begin until the home team loses, and the Oklahoma City Thunder sent a loud reminder of that to the San Antonio Spurs with a rout in Game 3 of the Western Conference finals. The host Thunder will look to even the series at two games apiece Saturday night after snapping the Spurs' 20-game winning streak. It was only the second win in 12 meetings for Oklahoma City, which improved to 6-0 at home in the playoffs.

            TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE SPURS: San Antonio went from unstoppable in Game 2 to overwhelmed in Game 3. In losing for the first time since April 11, the Spurs were held to their lowest point total since Jan. 27. Although the Spurs were due for a dud after winning 31 of their last 33 games, one troublesome aspect in the past two games has been the performance of future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan. After playing brilliantly through the first nine games of the postseason, Duncan is coming off back-to-back 11-point efforts and has shot a combined 7 of 26 in the two contests. He managed only two rebounds but did have five blocked shots to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for first place on the career postseason blocks list.

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Oklahoma City needed to get more contributions from beyond its Big 3, and Thabo Sefolosha provided more than the Thunder – and Spurs – could imagine with a standout performance at both ends of the court in Game 3. Sefolosha, who entered the game averaging four points in the playoffs, matched his season high with 19 points to go along with six steals and six rebounds. Sefolosha also drew the defensive assignment on Spurs point guard Tony Parker, forcing him into more turnovers (five) than assists (four) two days after Parker shredded the Thunder for 34 points. Also stepping up was forward Serge Ibaka, who scored 14 points – one more than his first two games combined – and blocked three shots.

            TRENDS:
            - Over is 10-4-1 in the last 15 meetings.
            - The Spurs are 18-8-3 ATS in their last 29 road games.
            - The over is 8-2 in the Thunder's last 10 games as a favorite.

            BUZZER BEATERS:

            1. San Antonio was denied in its bid to join the Los Angeles Lakers as the only teams to open the postseason with 11 straight victories.

            2. Thunder All-Star PG Russell Westbrook scored a playoff-low 10 points, but he had nine assists and four steals.

            3. The Spurs had scored more than 100 points 18 times during the 20-game winning streak.

                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                    Streaking

R.A. Dickey, New York Mets (7-1, 3.06 ERA)

How good is Dickey’s knuckler right now? Good enough to strike out 21 batters over his last two starts, which was the first time a knuckleball pitcher has posted consecutive 10-strikeout outings since Phil Niekro did it in 1978. Dickey walked just one batter over that span and hasn’t allowed more than three runs in his last seven trips to the hill.

Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies (8-1, 2.43 ERA)

If Hamels is going to be dealt before the trade deadline, the price tag is skyrocketing. The lefty did give up a couple of homers and four earned runs Monday against the Mets, but also struck out six while walking one in eight innings of work to win his eighth straight decision. He has walked more than two batters in only two of his 10 starts this season.

                    Slumping

Gavin Floyd, Chicago White Sox (4-5, 5.02 ERA)

Floyd picked up a win in his last start, but didn’t do much to deserve it. He was smacked for 10 hits and five earned runs while hitting three batters over five innings in a 12-6 Chicago victory against Cleveland. Manager Robin Ventura told reporters that his curveball was the main problem in that start. In his last three outings, the 6-foot-6 righty has allowed 28 hits and 21 runs, spanning over 14 2/3 innings.

Matt Garza, Chicago Cubs (2-3, 4.22 ERA)

Garza hasn’t picked up a win since puzzling the Phillies back on April 29. He gave up three homers and five earned runs in his last start after allowing two homers and seven earned runs in the start before that. Word out of the Windy City is that Garza could be available at the trade deadline for the right price.

                            Saturday, June 2

Spurs (2-1) @ Thunder-- Home teams are now 6-0 in this round of the playoffs, with Spurs having 20-game win streak snapped in last game on Thursday. Take away Parker/Jackson in Game 3, Spurs shot 31.5%, as Ginobili was just 1-5. Thunder is now 6-0 at home in playoffs; they got 19 points, six steals from Sefolosha, an unexpected gift. Spurs won 10 of last 13 games against Thunder, four of six this season. Curious to see if Spurs bounce back after first loss in seven weeks, or if Oklahoma City evens series here. Under is 8-3 in Spurs' playoff games, 4-1 on road; over is 4-2 in OC's home playoff games.

                              Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Johan Santana threw first no-hitter in Mets' history, in their 8,020th game; 134 pitches, 24 over his supposed pitch limit.

-- Mets are 29-23, and would be a Wild Card team right now; interesting to see how Santana goes forward from this point on.

-- Celtics hammered Miami 101-91; they were up 22 after third quarter. Heat is now 0-3 this season in games played in Boston.

-- NBA Draft Combine is June 7-8, televised on ESPNU.

-- Supposedly, it is good luck to throw a penny under a craps table before you roll the dice; don't say I didn't tell you.

-- Was written Friday that Phil Mickelson withdrew from the Memorial because he was upset that marshals wouldn't tell fans to turn cellphones off on the course. Wonder what Jack Nicklaus thought about that, seeing as this is his tournament and all?

                              **************

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but........

                              13) My three choices to be the next Olympic basketball coach:
                              a) Gregg Popovich (should be the Olympic coach now),
                              b) Paul Westhead (Wouldn’t it be awesome to watch our team hang 175 on Angola?) or
                              c) Mike D’Antoni (played some overseas, has respect of NBA players (other than Carmelo Anthony) and he needs a job anyway).

                              12) OK, so I had M&M’s Friday for the first time in a long time; never remembered there being blue M&M’s, so I had to look it up. Appears that blue M&M’s replaced tan M&M’s after a vote of customers in early 1995. So now we both know.

                              11) Some jackasses are whining because Sean Combs’ son got a football scholarship to UCLA, saying his dad is wealthy enough to afford college, so the kid shouldn’t get a free ride, which is total BS. If the kid is good enough, he should go for free, no questions asked. Why penalize a kid for having a rich parent? He's earned his scholarship.

                              10) Back in March, no one thought the White Sox were any good, but here it is June 2 and they’re in first place. Solid job being done by Robin Ventura, who had zero managerial experience coming in. Go figure.

                              9) Kellogg’s just brought Pringle’s potato chips for $2.7B; who knew I was eating such an expensive chip? $2.7B? Wow.

                              8) Someone named Snigdha Nandapati won the Spelling Bee on ESPN this week. Am guessing none of those kids are any good at video games. Just once, I’d like to see a kid who gets eliminated take that stupid cardboard sign from around his/her neck and rip it into about 30 pieces, then throw them down and storm off the stage.

Yes, spelling bees could use some more swagger.

                              7) Giants are 2-9 when Tim Lincecum starts, 26-15 in all other games, one of the weirder stats of the season. Hmmmm........

                              6) Marquette at Florida is the best of the Big East-SEC challenge hoop games scheduled for this fall.

                              5) Charlotte Bobcats are now offering 2-for-1 season tickets, after losing the Draft Lottery. Am guessing that wouldn’t have happened had Charlotte landed the #1 pick in this month’s draft. Just a guess.

                              4) Instead of going to movie premieres last year, A’s front office staff should’ve been figuring out that re-signing Josh Willingham would’ve been smarter than signing Coco Crisp/Manny Ramirez. Most anything would’ve been smarter than re-signing Crisp, who is fairly useless AND overpaid, a terrific combo.

                              3) Major League Draft is Monday, an interesting event. Last year, the Pirates spent $16,445,700 on their first 10 draft picks; seriously, they did. Detroit spent $1,815,200. Want to guess which team spends more money on veteran free agents?

                              2) Remember the famous last-second basket Danny Ainge scored for BYU to beat Notre Dame in the 1981 NCAA tournament? He shot it over the outstretched arms of Orlando Woolridge, who went on to score 16 ppg (13,623 points) in a 13-year NBA career, playing for seven different teams. Woolridge passed away this week at age 52. I’m 52. Very disturbing.

                              1) There are 212 days left in 2012; lets make every one of them count. Like the smart man I know says, “We won’t all run out of money, but we’ll all run out of time.” Amen.
