Tuesday’s betting tips: Braves’ skid puts bettors in the red

    Weather to watch

San Diego Padres at Chicago Cubs - 18 mph winds are expected to blow out to right-centerfield.

    Who’s hot

NBA: The Spurs are 22-5-1 ATS in their last 28 home games.

MLB: The over is 9-2-1 in umpire Mark Carlson’s last 12 games behind the plate. He’s scheduled to work Tuesday’s Phillies-Mets matchup.

MLB: Detroit is 13-4 in Justin Verlander’s last 17 starts.

WNBA: Tulsa is 7-0-1 ATS in its last eight vs. Los Angeles.

    Who’s not

NBA: The Thunder are 5-11-1 ATS in their last 17 meetings in San Antonio.

MLB: The Los Angeles Angels are 2-9 in Dan Haren’s last 11 starts.

MLB: The Atlanta Braves have lost eight straight games, their longest slump since 2010. The skid has dropped Atlanta supporters to -1.08 units on the year.

WNBA: The over is 3-7 in Los Angeles’ last 10.

    Key stat

-7.67 – The Tulsa Shock own the WNBA’s worst rebounding margin at -7.67. They are 0-3 straight up and 2-1 against the spread heading into Tuesday’s road date with the Los Angeles Sparks.

    Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Carlos Ruiz, Philadelphia Phillies – Ruiz sat out Monday’s game with a tight hamstring and his status for Tuesday’s matchup with the New York Mets is questionable. The catcher is off to a great year, hitting .366 with seven homers and 29 RBI.

    Game of the day

Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs (-4.5, 201)

    Notable quotable

“I thought defensively in the fourth quarter, we take a lot of pride in our defense in the fourth quarter, we gave up 39 points. Six of those I think were intentional fouls at the end. Over 30 points in the fourth quarter is not good enough to win." – Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks after Game 1’s loss to San Antonio.

    Notes and tips

Roy Halladay’s sore right shoulder is scheduled to undergo an examination Tuesday. The Philadelphia Phillies are worried about the health of the veteran pitcher and are hoping that Vance Worley can return fom his elbow injury soon in case Halladay is out for a while. Halladay is 4-5 with a 3.98 ERA and 56 strikeouts and 14 walks this year.

Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh participated in an on-court workout Sunday, but coach Erik Spoelstra said there wasn’t any timetable for his return. Spoelstra classified the workout as “very light” and Bosh may not play at all in the club’s series with Boston.

The Oakland Athletics activated third baseman Brandon Inge from the 15-day disabled list Monday. When Inge was placed on the DL, retroactive to May 13, with a strained right groin, he was hitting .227 with four homers and 17 RBI in 11 starts for the A's. The 35-year-old Inge started the season on the DL with a strained left groin and the Detroit Tigers released him. He signed with the A’s on April 30 as a free agent.

      Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

We're going to go thru the over/under win totals for each NFL team in this space over the next week, division-by-division. Today, the NFC North:

-- Bears-- 8.5, over -$135-- Have to protect Cutler better this year.

-- Lions-- 9.5, under -$135-- Have the weight of expectations now.

-- Packers-- 12, over -$125-- Favored to win the NFC.

-- Vikings-- 6, under -$130-- At least they're not moving to LA.......

Remember, what I've listed here are just odds, not any prediction.......

      ****************

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Wrapping up a holiday weekend.........

      13) Phil Mickelson has teamed up with the O'Malley family to try and buy the San Diego Padres; would've been nice if someone owned them who had a little cash before they gave away Adrian Gonzalez for next-to-nothing two years ago. I guess Andrew Cashner is an indirect product of the trade.

Troy Aikman owns a small part of the Padres now.

      12) Total in Padre-Cub game Monday was 12.5, despite fact that the two teams combined to score seven runs Friday-Sunday. Winds were blowing out 20-25 mph at Wrigley, so the 11-7 final wasn't unexpected.

      11) San Diego scored 11 runs Thursday, seven runs Monday, and one in the three games in between, going 25 consecutive innings without a run.

      10) Irrelevant stat of the day: Braves are 0-8 on Mondays this year.

      9) For Memorial Day, Pirates had a guy play the national anthem with a violin; it was very cool. The hours of practice it took him to get that good.

      8) You know your favorite team is awful when you're excited that Brandon Inge came off the DL so he can bat 5th in your lineup. His .227 average for the A's makes him seem like Mike Schmidt compared to their other 3B's.

      7) Chris Capuano is 7-1, 2.14 for the Dodgers this year; he wouldn't have left the Mets had they given him two years on his contract like LA did.

      6) Colorado Rockies have lost six games this year when they had a lead of 3+ runs, more than any other team in baseball.

      5) Guy named Leo Nunez had 37 saves for the Marlins LY; problem was, he really wasn't Leo Nunez, but Juan Oveido, and he's at least a year older than he said he was. Oveido finally got back into this country this week, and the reliever-starved Marlins could use him, but now he's suspended for eight weeks for identity fraud. He could help Miami down the stretch.

      4) Angels were 6-14 when they called young OF Mike Trout up; they're 19-11 since then. You could make an argument that Trout is a better player than Bryce Harper, but no question, they're both pretty darned good.

      3) World Series of Poker starts this week at the Rio in Las Vegas; by time it is over, in mid-July, I'll be out in the desert on vacation, to take in the NBA summer league and to watch some minor league baseball.

      2) Clippers' GM Neil Olshey doesn't have a contract for next year, and has talked to Portland about their GM opening. Clippers had a terrific season this year; would be sad if they let their architect walk away. Not surprising, but sad, in a redundant kind of way. Usually they've let the players walk.

      1) One of the cool things about baseball is that guys work so hard down in the minor leagues before they strike it rich in the majors. Carlos Maldonado is now the Nationals' backup catcher; he is 33, has been in pro ball for 17 years, but has played in only 27 big league games, getting to bat 67 times.

Nationals are a contender, so Maldonado is going to be in the center of the pennant race; its amazing how many catchers Washington has lost to injury this season. Now is Maldonado's time; he sure has paid his dues.

Public opinion: Tuesday’s top consensus plays

        NBA:

Oklahoma City Thunder at San Antonio Spurs (-4.5, 201)

The Oklahoma City Thunder looked to have the Spurs just where they wanted them late in Game 1 before San Antonio’s late push. If Kevin Durant can get some more help down the stretch, they should be in the mix Tuesday.

        Consensus: Thunder 59 percent/Spurs 41 percent

        MLB:

Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Dodgers (-120, 7.5)

The Los Angeles Dodgers have lost just five times at home this season, while the Brewers struggle to get anything going on the road. With Ted Lilly reportedly going on the shelf, Nathan Eovaldi is expected to make his first start of the season, so this line could move around a bit.

What bettors need to know: Tuesday's NBA playoff action
          ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE STORY: With his team staring at its first defeat in nearly seven weeks, San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich demanded that his players give him "some nasty." Did they ever. The Spurs roared back to erase a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit in the Western Conference finals opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder and can take a 2-0 series lead Tuesday night. San Antonio is 9-0 in the playoffs and is riding a 19-game winning streak after handing the Thunder their second loss of the playoffs.

          TV: 9 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE THUNDER: Three-time league scoring champ Kevin Durant got little help – at least until it was too late – from Oklahoma City's other primary offensive contributors, Russell Westbrook and James Harden. “We had this game going into the fourth,” Durant said. The Thunder managed only one field goal in nearly 9 1/2 minutes to watch a nine-point lead turn into a 10-point deficit. Oklahoma City's defense also went belly up in the final quarter, allowing San Antonio to shoot 75 percent after limiting the Spurs to 25 percent shooting in the third quarter. The Thunder had 11 steals and nine blocked shots through three quarters and did not register one of either while surrendering 39 points in the fourth.

ABOUT THE SPURS: Manu Ginobili did not face the Thunder in three regular-season meetings, but he made up for lost time in Game 1. Limited to 34 games in the regular season due to injuries, the former Sixth Man of the Year turned back the clock by scoring 26 points, his highest output since the postseason a year ago. Once San Antonio inched ahead in the fourth quarter, Ginobili went for the jugular, scoring 11 points in a span of 5:08 to break the game open. Entering the conference finals, Ginobili was averaging only 11.3 points for the postseason. Reserve guard Gary Neal also came up big for the Spurs, scoring seven of his 12 points in the final quarter to give his team a 52-37 edge in bench scoring.

          TRENDS:
          - Thunder are 4-0-1 ATS in their last five road games.
          - Spurs are 22-5-1 ATS in their last 28 home games.
          - Thunder are 3-7 ATS in the last 10 meetings.

          BUZZER BEATERS:

          1. The Spurs' 19-game winning streak extended from the regular season into the playoffs matched the Los Angeles Lakers of 2001 for the longest in league history. They are the fourth team in league history to win as many as 19 in a row.

          2. The Thunder have lost nine of the last 10 meetings with the Spurs, including three of four this season.

          3. Durant failed to hit at least one 3-pointer for the first time in 16 games.

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Tuesday's streaking and slumping starting pitchers
                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  Streaking

Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees (2-1, 2.53 ERA)

Pettitte doesn’t look to have missed a beat during his retirement. He has allowed just two runs over his last two starts (15 innings) while striking out 17 and walking just two. The veteran lefty gave up a pair of solo homers in an 8-3 win over the Kansas City Royals, firing 98 pitches over seven innings.

Ryan Vogelsong, San Francisco Giants (3-2, 2.50 ERA)

The Giants actually managed to give Vogelsong a bit of run support in his last game, a 14-7 victory over Miami. Vogelsong allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings, marking the first time he has allowed more than one run in a start this month. He’s working on a tidy 1.22 WHIP this year.

                  Slumping

Randall Delgado, Atlanta Braves (2-5, 4.53 ERA)

Delgado hasn’t won a start since April 17 and has allowed four runs in each of his last two outings. He suffered a 6-3 loss to Cincinnati, going 5 1/3 innings while striking out four and walking three. Delgado was rolling along until giving up four runs in the sixth. He has walked 14 batters over his last four.

Joe Blanton, Philadelphia Phillies (4-4, 4.45 ERA)

Blanton had a 2.81 ERA through his first seven starts before getting hammered in each of his last two starts. He has allowed 19 hits and 13 earned runs – including six homers - over that span. "The past two games, it's just been fastball command," Blanton told reporters. "My off-speed pitches were really good tonight -- good slider, good curveball, changeup was decent. It's 100 percent fastball command, and it's putting me behind in the count or I'm missing over the middle. That's making me stink right now."
